In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Some of us can remember when a television was a luxury, and having a color television was very special. Most of us can remember when cell phones were the size of brick, a twenty mega bite computer was the best and VHS videos were the rage. I think all us should be a little embarrassed at the number of things we now possess in our homes. Our modern culture of consumerism is so caught up in having the latest gadgets, that we are forgetting what is important in life. Our opening scripture from Ecclesiastes reminds us that all these things we toil to buy are all vanities. All the work and anxiety to obtain the best, the latest and greatest is not what we need to focus on. Our Gospel from Luke reminds us to guard against greed and that life does not consist of possessions. Jesus tells us the parable of a man so caught up with greed and self-satisfaction that he has forgotten who has given him his life and all that he possesses. Jesus’ point is that we should not store up treasure for ourselves but treasure in heaven, because that is what matters to God. Our second reading is the key to understand what God is trying to tell us this week. Paul says in his letter to the Colossians, “If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God”. If we really want to be Christian then we need to try to live in union with our Lord Jesus. Paul also says, we must put to death all that is immoral, impure, evil desires, and greed which is a form of idolatry. We must become a new creation in Christ Jesus, because Christ is ALL and in ALL.
