Resident News - Creative Living
News Resident News Welcome new resident Adam Helbling. He moved to Creative Living in January, one day before OSU classes started. He has two quarters left to get his degree in Civil Engineering with a minor in Entrepreneurship. It was less than one year since the single car accident left Adam with a spinal cord injury. Adam wears a championship ring on a chain around his neck - this is from the Ohio State Water Ski Team winning the Division II National Championship in 2010. Adam said, “Before my accident I was chosen to be the coach of the Ohio State Water Ski Team. And then I learned that life can change in an instant. Now I have to dream differently. Instead of building waterski lakes and cable parks for wake boarding maybe I’ll be making this world a better place for people with disabilities.” Adam was accepted into OSU’s locomotor training program there are only seven places in the country who offer it. He goes five times a week for two hours. He is suspended in a harness above a treadmill and with the help of three technicians, one on each side moving his legs while another is behind to position his pelvis, he walks 55 minutes on the treadmill. There are numerous health benefits associated with this training. February 2012 Adam is destined to be a published author: “There is so much that I have learned from this experience and it would be a waste not to share it. I am writing a book about what I’ve been through. Last year I faced more challenges than I had in my entire life combined. I was incredibly active before my accident and if given the chance to walk and run again I would not waste a single second of my life. I want to make other people realize that they need to take advantage of everything they can in life. Before my accident life was a breeze. The scariest moment of my life was when I found out that I was paralyzed. It was strange coming back to Columbus in a wheelchair. I cannot do this alone but it is hard being so dependent on others. It is amazing now looking back and seeing how much I took for granted. I want to help people to forget about stressing about the little things in life. I want to help people focus on what they have and not on what they don’t. Every day is a gift and we should live life to the fullest. Before all of this happened to me I had so much freedom. Let’s make every day count and find meaning in the lives that we live.” Jeff makes the news! Jeff Joos was featured in an article in Business First titled, “Group’s Apartments Let Disabled Live Independently”. Jeff was pictured at Capital University Law School where he is pursuing a law degree. We love when Creative Living’s mission is featured in the community. Of the Resident Assistance Program Jeff said, “It’s everything. I can feel safe, yet I’m on my own.” To read the article about Jeff and Creative Living, go to www.creative-living.com. LIFE LESSONS by Rachel P. Cunningham Resident Assistant, OSU Speech Pathology Student “It’s the little things that count.” This is one of the main lessons since I started working at Creative Living that I have taken to heart. Resident Dan Kohler has been one to really show me this and he has unintentionally done so. One of his favorite flavors is Orange Creamsicle and he has a pack of gum that sits on his microwave day in and day out. Every day he offers me a piece in his apartment, although I have yet to take one, I did happen to remember that Berry Blendz has a smoothie of that flavor. So one day before my shift I left a little earlier just to get him a smoothie so he could know what I was talking about and what he was missing out on (they’re so good!). This got me to thinking that something as simple as a smoothie can really turn a person’s day around and little did the girl working know how much of an impact she would have on a man’s life that day just by making a smoothie. “It’s the little things that count.” Even if that little thing is just a smoothie or flashing a smile to a complete stranger, you never know the impact you may leave behind on somebody and that is just one of the many life lessons that Creative Living has helped me to learn. Resident Assistants What a great group of Resident Assistants we have! Most are students working toward degrees in Microbiology, Chemistry, Vet Tech, Physical Therapy, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Chemical Engineering, Exercise Science, Dance, Human Nutrition, Nursing, Allied Medicine, and Medical Dietetics. Working as a Resident Assistant has given them invaluable experience in multi-tasking, working independently, and assisting individuals with different needs and personalities. Each Resident Assistant is also certified in CPR and AED. New Board Member We welcome Michael O’Leary back to the Board! Mike served on our board in 2006 through 2008 until work took him out of town. Creative Living’s mission is strong in Mike’s heart because of his dad. Mike’s father, who passed away in 1970, was a disabled WWII veteran who suffered enormous injuries, including being paralyzed. Mike witnessed the challenges and incredible courage his dad possessed just to perform the daily tasks we all take for granted. Mike works for Innovation Group; he and his wife Jacki reside in Pickerington. As a fellow board member said of Mike, “We will have a stronger team having him on the board”. Financial News At Creative Living, we count on the support of individuals, corporations, foundations and service organizations to help us in our mission to provide assisted living for individuals with severe physical disabilities. The continued success of Creative Living requires maintaining high quality facilities and our Resident Assistance Program. This year our budget for the RA program is over $270,000. All of our donors should trust and be assured that their contribution is not only needed but vital to our resident’s quest for independence. Their independence is made possible through our Resident Assistance Program. It takes over $930,000 to operate our organization. Typically, contributions make up over one-third of our income. Due to the generosity of our donors, Creative Living’s 2011 revenue increased by more than 20% over 2010, however, due to diligence in managing our expenses, we were able to limit our 2011 expense increases to less than 2%. As a result of our fiscally conservative efforts, we were able to increase the balance of our investments by an amount greater than our increase in revenue. These investments will allow us to continue to provide the vital services that our residents need on a daily basis. This past year we were so fortunate to receive some generous estate gifts safeguarding our future. Financial and in-kind support is vitally important to transforming and impacting the lives of the residents of Creative Living. Thank you to all who supported our first annual beer tasting event! We had over 200 attendees and raised over $9,200 for our Resident Assistance Program. We enjoyed choosing from 30 beers and ciders, hors d'oeuvres and browsing the exhibits in the galleries of OSU Urban Arts Space. CL residents Aaron Durbin and Joe Gibson brought friends and family to support the event. Funniest comment heard: (while contemplating the Tower of T-shirts) "That piece of art looks like it belongs in my bedroom, except it would have an elliptical machine under it." John Lepley spoke about Creative Living's Resident Assistance Program. Facilities Creative Living recently replaced the intercom system at both apartment complexes due to age and unreliability. The intercom system is crucial to our program as a means for residents to communicate with the Resident Assistant on duty while still allowing independence. The total cost for replacement was $75,354 for both complexes which HUD allowed us to use our Reserve for Replacement funds. The purpose of the Reserve for Replacement fund is to ensure that the property is maintained to the extent possible, in a condition similar to when it was initially insured or given a Section 8 contract. This fund is generally used to help defray the costs of replacing a project’s capital items. Creative Living makes monthly payments to this fund as determined by HUD. During the scope of the work each apartment was also hard wired with an Ethernet connection for the residents. We are touched by the many ways people give to Creative Living Safelite not only sponsors each of our fund-raising events and has as an employee serving on our board of trustees, but they personalized their giving even further. When resident Mike Stewart’s windshield cracked, they came out and replaced it for him in-kind. In November, Tom Cole of Cole Communications called and said, “Happy Thanksgiving. Go to your website and see my gift to CL on the Brew Review page”. He created a headline animation for us in-kind! e bsit We bling A nice big envelope arrived in our mailbox in December with seven checks and a note: - En - -cl- os - -ed - - is - - ou - - r- -fa -m - -ily - - Ch - - ri gi - st ft - -m-as s. --Ea - - - - - - - -ch ye ar th e ho st an d ho ---- - -st - es - -s- -ch- oo e- m is-si-on that- - -se - s- -th w ill re - - - - - - ce r - gi ft-s.- If you- - - - - -iv- e- -ou -------se- -add these- - do -w - ou - -ld - - pl - -ea - - - - - -no - -rs- - - lin - to - - -yo- ur g lis - - -m-ai t, I w ou - - - - - - - - - - - ld ------ be - - -gr y - he - at - -ef ar - -ul-.- M t - is fu lo ve -ll- -of --is - - - - -fo m is si - -r - th on an - - - - - - - - - - -d- -it is a pr iv ile -- - - - - - - -ge - - to - - -be of - - a- - pa th- is - -rt w on de rf ul or - - - - - - - - - - -ga - -ni- za - -ti-on - -. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -T - -he - - -Jo- ne - -s- -Fa- m - -ily - Time Warner Cable gave us Public Service Announcement time for a Brew Review 30-second spot. Video services were donated by Patrick Horgan as well. Columbus Women’s Club continues to provide “Panera Wednesday” for our residents. Creative Living’s holiday party was hosted by the service board. Long time supporters Lena Pigg and Bobbie & Steve McGrew attended to wrap gifts for residents. North American Cabinets worked on some repairs in some of our apartments - they donated a new faucet and backsplash and they are a new corporate Bronze Sponsor for Bouquet of Flavours 2012. The Conference Center at Northpointe donated slightly used towels and sheets for our residents. Upper Arlington Swim Club donated left-over snacks from their meet for our residents. We don’t know who enjoyed themselves more, The Columbus Woman’s Club decorating our lobbies and taking cookies to our residents or the MLK OSU student volunteers taking the decorations down or maybe it was the residents eating their cookies! It’s a tug-of-war Annual Campaign Our residents are inspired to succeed, motiv ated t o ach ieve We launched our annual campaign to raise funds for the Resident Assistance Program in November. We have received a little over $50,000 in donations. To reach our budget we still need to raise almost $60,000. Our goal is to keep the RA fee affordable for our residents. Each resident pays $200 a month for this service. Despite increased program costs we have been able to hold this fee steady since 2006. Please help by sending your donation today. We accept credit card donations on-line at www.creative-living.com. and determined to surpass expectations. • 35 people gave to Creative Living through the Big Give, a day of community giving, with the Columbus Foundation matching contributions at over 13%. We received $10,382. A wonderful day in Philanthropy for Central Ohio. • The Nationwide Insurance Foundation awarded Creative Living a $1,000 Leadership Grant made on behalf of CL’s Board President Todd Ackerman and Board Secretary Jody Orsine. • We received a $1,000 grant from The Talmage Family Foundation. • We received a $1,000 grant from the Beatrice I. and Alan R. Weiler Fund. We appreciate receiving this grant every year! • We were pleased to receive a $15,000 grant from a wonderful foundation that would like to remain anonymous. This foundation has given us support since 2008, and they have been increasing the amount of their donation.
