1922—2008
BORN IN MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA IN 1922, HE
WENT ON ACTIVE DUTY IN 1940 AND INTO THE
ARMY AIR CORPS IN 1942. AFTER FLYING 10
MISSIONS, HE WAS SHOT DOWN OVER FRANCE
AND HELD AS A POW UNTIL THE END OF THE
WAR. HE RETIRED AS A MAJOR IN 1960 AND
THEN EARNED A DEGREE AT TEXAS A&M AND
WORKED ANOTHER 20 YEARS FOR TEXAS HIGH2LT DALLAS WAY ADMINISTRATION. HE PASSED AWAY AT

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE
Greetings Fellow Patriots,
I have received some e-mail messages recently that I
believe we need to share:
1.
Denzel Washington and his family recently
visited the troops at Brooke Army Medical
Center in San Antonio, Texas (BAMC). This
is where soldiers who have been evacuated
from Germany come to be hospitalized in the
United States, especially burn victims.
BAMC has “Fisher Houses” there, they are a
type of hotel where the soldiers’ families can
stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier
is in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of
these houses on their base, but as you can
imagine, they are almost always filled.
While Denzel Washington was visiting
BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the
Fisher Houses. He asked how much it took to
build one of these. He took out his checkbook
and wrote a check for the full amount right
there on the spot.
The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear
this story and wanted to get the word out to
the American Public, because it warmed their
hearts to hear it.
The question is – why do Britney Spears,
Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Tom Cruise
and other Hollywood fluff make front page
with their ridiculous antics, but Denzel
Washington’s Patriotism and charity doesn’t
even make page 3 in the Metro section in any
newspaper except the local newspaper in San
Antonio?
Please remember this the next time you’re
thinking of spending your money for a movie,

Women's Memorial Purple Heart Project
From the blood-spattered halls of Pearl
Harbor’s military hospitals to the war-torn
streets of Afghanistan and Iraq, for some 60
years military women have been among the
multitudes of American service members to
receive the Purple Heart. Though women
have been direct recipients of this
distinguished award beginning with World
War II—first for those demonstrating
exceptional heroism or bravery and now for
those killed or wounded in combat—
compiling a comprehensive list of women
recipients had not been attempted until
recently. Through a generous grant from the
Military Order of the Purple Heart
Foundation in 2000, the Foundation began
the long and painstaking task of researching
and identifying women veterans and
servicewomen who have been awarded the
Purple Heart. But there is still much work
to be done and we need your help.
Locating female Purple Heart recipients is
an ongoing project for Dr. Judith Bellafaire,
Chief Historian at the Women’s Memorial
Foundation.
How You Can Help
Though the project has been underway for
more than five years, Bellafaire and her
colleagues at the Women’s Memorial will
continue searching until their roster is
complete and up to date, but community
assistance remains key to project
completion. If you are a service woman or
veteran and have received a Purple Heart,
or if you know a woman who has, from any
era and any service, please contact Dr.
Bellafaire via e-mail at
history@womensmemorial.org or by
calling 703-533-1155 or 800-222-2294.
Finally, please keep our fellow patriots that
are under the weather in our prayers. Seems
we have quite a few of our comrades not
feeling up to snuff. If you are aware of
someone who is not doing so well, let us
know. A card or a call or a visit can lift the
spirits.

Three new members have been added to the rolls of Chapter 1919 since publication of your
last PATRIOT BULLETIN. Congratulations and Welcome to:
HERBERT LONG JR. is an Army Vietnam veteran. He was wounded March 24, 1969 during an
engagement of Task Force “Remagen” when assigned to Company A, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division.
MICHAEL S. MCGRATH is a twice wounded Navy Vietnam veteran. Michael was a Corpsman in 1st
Medical Bn, forward deployed, 1st Marine Division wounded in the I Corps area at Duc Tho in January
1967, then wounded a second time in July 1967, outside Danang, when with Combined Action Platoon
(CAP B 2-2).
DANIEL C. WILSON, SFC, Army, wounded in both Iraq and in Afghanistan. He was serving in the 704th
Ordnance Company of the Multi-National Corps, Iraq in Baghdad when wounded May 22, 2005, and was
wounded a second time on September 15, 2011 when a member of the 129th Explosive Ordnance Disposal
Company (EOD), assigned to United States Forces-Afghanistan in Kabul.

William J. Dallas was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1922. He was called into active
duty in 1940 and then transferred to the Army Air Corps in 1942. He went through flight
training and after receiving his wings as an Army Aviator Bill was assigned to the 303rd
Bomb Group (Heavy). The 303rd Group flew B-17 “flying fortress” bombers and it was
one of the early arriving bombardment groups sent to England and assigned to the 8th Air
Force.

On March 26, 1944, the 303rd Bomb Group sent 20 aircraft on a bombing mission over

occupied France. That was the 128 combat mission for the group; they were to attack an
Operation “Crossbow” target, that being a special missile launching site that the Germans had built at
Wizernes, France in the Pas de Calais area.

“HELL’S ANGELS”
Second Lieutenant Bill Dallas was co-pilot of aircraft #42-31929 in the group’s 427th
Bomb Squadron. That was the plane, “Tennessee Hillbilly,” commanded by pilot 1st Lt
Charles W. Mars, and it would be the only plane lost during that 20-plane bombing
mission. They went in at 21,000 feet and Bill Dallas’ plane took several FLAK hits
between the Initial Point (IP) and the target during the bomb run. Eyewitnesses reported
during debriefings after the mission, “The B-17 was hit just a few seconds before “bombs
away,” it peeled off to the right, passing under the formation, and went into a shallow
glide… Seven parachutes were seen to have opened before the plane nosed down in a
half-spin, made a three-quarter turn, then exploded in mid-air about ten kilometers
northeast of St. Omer. Then an eighth parachute came out and opened after the blast.
Although aircraft parts were all around it the canopy did not appear to have been
damaged.”
Bill Dallas described what happened to PATRIOT BULLETIN this way, “We were nearly
through (the bomb run) when suddenly hit by large caliber FLAK. A burst in front of the
aircraft wounded me in the arm and leg. It also severed a finger from the pilot (1Lt Mars)
whose hand was on the throttle when the throttle assembly was hit. That same burst also wounded the
Navigator in the nose of the aircraft. The B-17 also sustained damage from other hits in the rear and middle
of the plane. Engines were on fire on both the left and right wings when the crew bailed out just before the
aircraft blew up in the air.”

Although eyewitnesses observed a total of eight parachutes, nine airmen had survived the loss of the
“Tennessee Hillbilly,” those being 1LT Charles Mars, 2LT William Dallas, 2LT George Avanites, T/Sgt
Conrad Kersch, S/Sgt Raymond Foster, S/Sgt Eddie McGinnis, S/Sgt Charles Dunlap Jr., S/Sgt Albert
Senechal, S/Sgt Delbert Nivens and S/Sgt Vincent Angione. All of them were in this accompanying photo
that was taken two months earlier of Lt Mars’ crew of aircraft #42785.
T/Sgt Conrad Kersch alone among the crew successfully evaded capture. The others, including 2LT Dallas,
were taken prisoner by the Germans and they spent the remainder of the war as POWs.
Bill described some of his experiences, “I looked really beat up when processed in and photographed as a
Stalag prisoner. That was the beginning of more than a year as a POW. As the Soviet troops were nearing

the Stalag at the end of the war, our guards pulled out the day before they arrived and abandoned the camp.
The Gestapo office files had been left intact and I secured my file and photo. The prisoners were milling
around, uncertain what to do next. Many of the men determined to wait where we were, others did not trust
the Russian Army to get us back into U.S. custody. I determined not to wait, and with one other man started
out walking west in the hope of running into American or British troops.
We were on the road for days, but I don’t recall exactly how long it took for us to pass through the Soviet
controlled area. We encountered Russian troops often. Sometimes they eyed us suspiciously, but fortunately
none of them made any move to detain us and we just kept going. We were easily recognizable as Americans
and I do remember being given food along the way by German civilians. That was extraordinary generosity
coming from people who didn’t have enough for themselves and who were facing a far more uncertain future
than we were at the time. In one of the towns we passed through we were approached by several very
frightened girls asking us to protect them from Russian soldiers. We agreed to this appeal to our gallantry,
but unwisely so as it turned out, because some soldiers came by almost immediately after that and started to
forcibly take the girls into a house. When I made a move to intervene one of the Russian troops turned and
pointed his automatic weapon (a Soviet model that looked like a Thompson sub-machine gun) at my belly.
He didn’t say a word, but he didn’t need to. We beat it out of there, hustled on out of town and continued on
our way. That was the closest call we experienced before eventually reaching safety.”
After returning to U.S. control and back for duty, Bill Dallas remained in the Air Force and he continued on
flying status. He served as pilot of Search and Rescue aircraft and retired with the rank of Major at Carswell
Air Force Base at Fort Worth, Texas on November 30, 1960.
Upon retirement he enrolled at Texas A&M University and earned a Civil Engineering degree in 1964. He
then entered into a second career as an engineer with the Texas Highway administration and retired there
after 20 years service.
He was a member of the United Christian Church in Austin and he joined the Military Order of the Purple
Heart as a life member shortly after Chapter 1919 was chartered. Bill Dallas passed away at age 85 on April
25, 2008, being survived by: a sister, Mary Smith; his wife, Allyne and their four children, Suzanne, Cathy,
Ric and Carye; four grandchildren, Diana, Sylvia, Stephen and Ashlye; three great-grandchildren, numerous
other relatives; and a host of friends. This month, PATRIOT BULLETIN renders reverent salute to the
memory of Patriot William “Bill” J. Dallas.

seeing grandchildren as I have.

National level for 2011-2012 that
have worked so hard for our
organization. Congratulations to
our new National President,
Elaine Rey! We are all very
proud of you. Also to our new
National Finance Officer, Vicki
Treese, and National Historian,
Ursula McGrue, all from Texas !
We have come to know these
ladies, so we can expect a vital
productive year ahead from these
officers.
I would like to bring your focus
to two topics. The first one is
membership. We need to be
more diligent in finding and
signing up those people who are
eligible for membership. Not
only to expand our roles but to
connect with those families of
veterans and the veterans
themselves. Which brings me to
the second topic.
We need to care for those
members we already have on our
unit rosters. We all have them,
those members we haven’t seen
at meetings for a while, that we
ask other members about and no
one has heard from them. I urge
you to be in contact with each
member or try to check on them.
We need, as a unit, and as
individuals, to be in contact with
our members. Bring that back to
your unit as a report. There may
be health or other issues going
on.
Send cards, make phone calls, if
time allows, make a visit. I
would ask that you make this a
priority. Check on one of your
members every month and report
back to the unit any information
you have found. This way we
stay connected—and I would like
to stay connected with you as
well—feel free to contact me at

doing volunteer work in our name, promoting our image as combat wounded veterans with the public and

Veterans Home.

THE “BUGLES ACROSS AMERICA” ORGANIZATION. AND, THERE

After the CENTEX VA Volunteer Recognition luncheon in Temple
every spring, PATRIOT BULLETIN runs a story naming our Purple
Heart volunteers receiving awards. Lilo is always included and is
always tops in lifetime volunteer hours—but, that kind of brief little
mention doesn’t even begin to do justice for her service to disabled
veterans and for the favorable image that service lends to our Chapter
and to the Order. This year, her recognition for 32,500 lifetime hours
of volunteer work put her in first place among the more than 1,600
VA Volunteers serving in the eight campuses of the VA System in the
39 counties making up the Central Texas area. Lilo has done all kind
of volunteer work, from working the Information Booth at the
entrance of Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center in Temple, to

1,500 LAP ROBES (AND EACH ONE REQUIRED EIGHTEEN
HOURS TO KNIT BY HAND). SHE IS PICTURED HERE AT AN
EARLIER RECOGNITION EVENT DISPLAYING HER WORK.
FOR OUR PART, CHAPTER 1919 HAS BEEN FURNISHING
THE YARN SHE NEEDS TO KEEP KNITTING
THE MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART WAS CHARTERED BY THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES IN 1958 (PUBLIC LAW 85-761, 85TH CONGRESS, H.R.13558). THE ORDER IS EXCLUSIVELY COMPOSED
OF MILITARY MEN AND WOMEN WHO RECEIVED THE PURPLE HEART MEDAL FOR WOUNDS SUSTAINED IN COMBAT. ALTHOUGH MEMBERSHIP IS RESTRICTED TO THE COMBAT WOUNDED, IT SUPPORTS ALL
VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE MISSION OF THE M.O.P.H. IS TO FOSTER AN ENVIRONMENT OF GOODWILL AND CAMARADERIE AMONG COMBAT WOUNDED VETERANS, PROMOTE PATRIOTISM, SUPPORT

ALFREDO “AL” GARCIA
TAPS
Patriot ALFREDO “Al” GARCIA Jr. died August 4,
2012, passing peacefully at his home in Austin, Texas.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1924, his family
moved to San Benito (Cameron County) when he was a
small child. He attended school as he grew up there,
while earning money working part time in local grocery
stores, selling newspapers, and picking cotton at harvest
time. He worked briefly after graduation from High School and
then was drafted by the Army in January 1944. He was assigned to
Company G, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division during
their participation in the Southern Philippines and Ryukus Campaigns.
He was wounded on Okinawa on April 23, 1945 and was discharged
after WWII, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant before separation at Fort Bliss, Texas on February 14, 1946.
Al enrolled at the University of Texas in September 1946 and he
earned a degree in Government. In 1947, he married his college
sweetheart, Maria Torrez. They had five children during the years
that he pursued his career. He retired from the U.S. Department of
Commerce with 29 years service, but remained active in the local
community in programs for disadvantaged youths. He was an active
member of Knights of Columbus at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and
he became a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart
shortly after Chapter 1919 was chartered in Austin.
Alfredo Garcia Jr. is survived by Maria, his wife of 65 years, their
five children, Suzanne Guerrero, Mario Garcia, Albert Garcia, Marc
Garcia, Maria Krug, and their families.
