Brittany Altomare, the 2013 champion.
“She is a phenomenal ball striker.” said
Virginia head coach Kim Lewellen. “She

the green and knew it was going to roll

Clemson’s Behr Wins Byron Nelson Award
All five Clemson golfers finished in the top
16 for the first
time in the history of the school’s
participation
of the event, as
Clemson won the
ACC Men’s Golf
Championship at
the Old North
State Club in New
London, N.C.
Clemson finished with a team
score of
25-under-par
839 for the
54 holes, 11
shots ahead
of secondseed Wake
Forest.
Overall, it was
Clemson’s
10th ACC
Tournament Championship, the ninth
under 33-year head coach Penley. “This was
a long time coming,” said Penley. “When we lost in the playoff to Georgia
Tech last year I was starting to wonder if
we were ever going to win again, but we
had three guys back from last year who had
this tournament circled on their calendar.
“We had confidence we could win this
tournament.”
Clemson now awaits its NCAA Regional
assignment a week from Monday. For the
first time since 2004, Clemson is the automatic qualifier from the ACC.
Clemson golfer Stephen Behr is the
recipient of the 2016 Byron Nelson
Award. Behr is the first Clemson golfer to
win the award, which dates to 2002.

The award is named in honor of Byron
Nelson, the respected Hall of Fame Golfer
who won a record 18 tournaments in 1945,
including 11 in a row.
Behr is currently ranked 27th nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, a
big reason Clemson is ranked 10th in the
nation as a team.
This marks the second straight year and
the fourth time in the last six years that
a golfer from the ACC has won the award.
Last year Anders Albertson of Georgia
Tech was the recipient of the Byron Nelson
Award.

Ironwood’s atmosphere is both inviting
and casual. Bar seating includes hightop tables, and TV’s for viewing the day’s
sports coverage. The separate dining room
is modern, spacious and airy, while the
patio offers al fresco dining with a stunning
fire-enhanced fountain.

About 10 years
ago the owner of
the Moon, Randy
Russell, was having great success in the
first Full Moon in Clemmons. He approached
Ty and asked him what he thought about
opening another restaurant in Pinehurst. Ty
agreed it was a great location, and so it
went.

Ty is responsible for all the food preparation
and making sure everyone who works in
the kitchen prepares the food according to
his recipes. If there is a problem at
one of the other sites, he is on his way to
Full Moon’s patio seating

Ty sometimes spends time in New Orleans,
and loves to experience other chef’s recipes.
On his signature dish “Shrimp and Grits,
”Hands down, he says, “mine is the best.”
All the fish is fresh and individual dishes are
plentiful. There is something for everyone’s
taste, Our favorites have been the Low
Country Shrimp Boil, Seafood Gumbo, Crab
Legs, Soft Shell Crabs (my choice), served
fresh (end of April and May). —And of
course Shrimp and Grits. For a New Orleans

It’s the hole that invariably
frightens even the most seasoned
tour pros. But 44 year old Jim
Daunheimer felt only exhilaration
as he contemplated his upcoming
iron shot to the notorious “Island
Green” at TPC Sawgrass. When,
like Jim, you have endured lifethreatening combat missions like
“Desert Storm” and “Iraqi Freedom,” a challenging pitch to a tiny
green completely surrounded by
water is not going to intimidate
you very much. And when- unfortunately also like Jim- exposure
to chemical warfare in Iraq has
subsequently saddled you with
inoperable brain cancer, you savor
the life you have left.
Their dinner conversation covered the plight of service disabled
veterans and the PGA Tour’s and
other foundations’ efforts to help
veterans. The foursome have all
been touched by the military service and service disabilities. Jim is
suffering from service related brain
cancer. Frank and Debbie’s daughter, an Iraq war veteran is service
disabled and suffers from seizures.
Rick’s son Justin lost his leg in
an IED incident in Afghanistan as
member of the 82nd Airborne and
now tours the country as a motivational speaker. All at the table were
humbled by the discussions of sacrifice and the monumental efforts
on behalf of our nation’s veterans.
So when as part of the PGA
Tour’s “Birdies for the Brave” initiative, its Vice-President of Community Outreach John Flashner
invited the Bronze Star recipient
and guests of his choosing to a
two day “PGA Tour Experience” at
TPC on February 24th and 25th,
Jim unhesitatingly accepted.
On Thursday morning, led by
Jonathan Williams, PGA, Assistant
Golf Professional, TPC Sawgrass,
the foursome were shown to their
lockers, the gentlemen in the Tour
Players Locker room, and Debbie
in the guest locker room. In both
locker rooms the foursome were
all very surprised to see a locker
bearing their name with a personalized brass plaque. After breakfast in the clubhouse and with a
forecaddie bearing his name on
his caddie bib, Jim teed it up with
his group up on the famed Stadium Course. A stiff wind was blowing adding to the challenges of the
Pete Dye design. On hole 17, Jim
knocked it stiff to eight feet but his
right to left birdie put just barely
lipped out. None the less it was
great two days for the foursome.
On Wednesday February 24th
Jim, his friend Rick Lansford, and
his family members and Pinehurst
Country Club Members Frank and
Debbie Marois traveled to Ponte
Verde Beach Florida for two unforgettable days. Their visit began
with a video swing assessment
by JP Guarneri, Senior Instructor,
TOURAcademy, TPC Sawgrass and
then dinner with PGA Tour Co-COO
Edward Moorehouse and his wife
Lee.

It all started
with a bad golf
shot. Actually, a series
of bad shots.
Dan Van Horn,
an engineer by
trade, one-time
professional
golfer and serial
entrepreneur,
wanted to enjoy
an afternoon
with his 8-yearold son Ben out on the golf course. But it
turned out to be anything but enjoyable.
Ben was having a terrible time getting the
ball in the air or going in the right direction. There had to be a better way.
That was the scene at a suburban golf
course outside of Atlanta, Georgia in
1998– a scene no doubt played out over
generations at golf courses all around the
world. But this one particular round led to
an epiphany for Van Horn. He reasoned that
Ben’s golf development was impeded by
poor equipment. For kids, clubs with less
weight in the head along with a flatter lie
angle would fit their swing better. He went
home and removed some weight from the
cut-down 5-wood Ben was using to test
his theory. Ben’s next round showed immediate improvement. That one idea grew
into a company – U.S. Kids Golf – which
grew into a movement. Today, less than
20 years later, over one million young golfers have been impacted because Ben Van
Horn struggled with his swing that fateful
afternoon.
Recognizing the Difference
and the Value of Kids
U.S. Kids Golf, both the LLC (mainly
equipment) and the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation (which operates the Tournament
Players Association (TPA) and the Coaches

Institute), is now
leading the world
in youth golf – not
only in products and
programs, but in the
emphasis that the
golf industry must
place on its newest
generation of players.
“In virtually
every field, people
understood that
kids learned differently than adults. But
quite honestly, those in the golf world were
slow adapters,” Van Horn explains. “Cutting
down dad’s clubs and putting a grip on
the end seemed to be the obvious answer
for many years – but it was a bad one.
Who knows how many kids the game lost
because we asked them to learn in such a
difficult way. Sure, junior clubs had been
around awhile, but U.S. Kids Golf was the
first to go as far as we did to design clubs:
in length, weight, and lie angles, specifically for children. And then, of course, to fit
them by height and not age. We’ve helped
fill that knowledge gap. That’s why we’ve
been successful.”
What seems so obvious now, however,
wasn’t always met with universal agreement.
“We’ve had our share of skeptics as we
grew,” he acknowledges. “There were those
that believed we shouldn’t change things
up. I don’t know if they were doubting us
as an organization or the capacity of young
kids to participate in the larger golf community, but we’ve never let that slow us
down. We were - and are - absolutely confident our audience and mission are vital to
the future of golf.”
“And that’s what we, organizationally, want
as a culture. We are constantly looking to
evolve and grow, to anticipate what will
serve our community better, now and in
the future.”
Perhaps nothing exemplifies this mindset
better than the over 900 tournaments that
U.S. Kids Golf runs around the world.
“They are successful, in large part,
because they are different,” Van Horn
explains. “We were the first to create ageappropriate yardages, so that young golfers
could reasonably aspire to make pars and
birdies. We not only allowed, but encouraged, parents – our Daddy Caddies – to be
part of the tournaments. We welcome that
family interaction and participation. And I
can tell you, not everyone thought that was
a good idea – to have parents inside the
ropes. So we have guidelines and partnerships that help make it work. But in the
end, it has worked, and worked well. I have
stacks of letters from parents, grateful that
some of their most cherished memories are
the times they got to spend working as a
team with their child at our tournaments.
I love that.”
Those tournaments culminate each year
in the U.S. Kids Golf Teen World Championship and World Championship that take
place right here in the Pinehurst region
each summer. Over 2,000 kids from over
50 countries come to compete and enjoy
time with friends and family. In 2015, the
boys winner, Paul Chaplet, went on to win
the Latin America Amateur Championship
– earning a spot in the 2016 Masters. Many
PGA Tour stars grew up playing in U.S. Kids
Golf tournaments, including Patrick Reed,
Justin Thomas, and Smylie Kauffman. LPGA
stars like Lexi Thompson, Cheyenne Woods,
and Ashlan Ramsey are past U.S. Kids Golf
World Champions.
Families matter at Longleaf
Van Horn is understandably proud of the
success of some of the most well-known
U.S. Kids Golf alumni, but his passion is
still making the game easier to learn for
the new and undecided youngster. And it’s
that goal, along with the same entrepreneurial mindset that allowed him to start
U.S. Kids Golf, which is still driving the
mission today.
For example, the U.S Kids Golf Foundation recently purchased Longleaf Golf
& Family Club in Southern Pines. The

purchase is part of the foundation mission,
putting into practice with the ideas and
models for new concepts that would make
golf a much more inclusive and welcoming game for all members of the family.
Core to that strategy is Van Horn’s favorite
principle – showing that properly scaling
a course (increasing the number of tee
complexes for appropriate yardages for all
players) – will generate more enthusiasm
to play for every level of golfer. Success at
Longleaf is intended to inspire other golf
courses to follow suit. Furthermore, the
Foundation has renovated and upgraded
the course in several areas, including
expanding the range, putting in a 10,000
square foot practice green and a short
game area.
Also at Longleaf, the Foundation has
started its first U.S. Kids Golf Academy,
a learning institution designed to create effective programs and models (with
future academies to be started around the
country) that will inspire a new generation

of youth to get involved in the game.
“It all comes back to family,” Van Horn
says. “I believe that golf is a way to create
special family moments. If we can help
facilitate that, everything else in golf will
take care of itself.”
The stated mission of U.S. Kids Golf
reflects Van Horn’s commitment: “To help
kids have fun learning the lifelong game
of golf and to encourage family interaction
that builds lasting memories.” Van Horn
notes that providing equipment, resourcing
coaches and hosting tournaments are just
more ways to serve that mission.
Making great memories together
Today, Ben Van Horn is an attorney in
Miami Beach, who still loves to get out and
play golf. The cut down/modified 5-wood
is in a display case in the lobby of the Norcross, Georgia headquarters of U.S. Kids
Golf. A reader can go on any number of
social media platforms to see thousands of
photos and videos sharing the impact that
U.S. Kids Golf is having around the world.
But the singular passion and goal of the
founder has not changed from the first day.
“I have responsibilities as a leader of
the company,” Van Horn acknowledges.
“But I’m still motivated by how much
more fun golf was for Ben when we first
modified that club. If every kid could feel
that joy, golf would be in a better place,
families would spend more time together
on the course, and we’d all have some great
memories to cherish. What’s better than
that?”

Flexibility, or lack of it, has decreased the distance of our shots
(unless you’re Gary Player). Bad
backs, sciatica, hip and knee
replacements are all part of the
“Golden Years”.
As our handicaps go up, we try
to get back our lost distance. The
body swings become more arms
and hands as we try to “muscle”
the ball to where we hope to hit it.
Look where your drives end this
year. If you don’t improve flexibility
and strengthen your core, you will
hope to hit it next year as far as
you are hitting it now.
At this time the equipment and
balls are letting the good seniors
in good physical shape hit the ball
farther than they did years ago.
What can you do to get back
distance? You can begin by following a stretching regimen (if your
physician gives
the ok), core
development,
if you can lose
the gut, and if
necessary, some
weight. Go to a
PGA Professional
for a fitting which
usually takes a
good hour or
more for a driver
shaft. A good
fitter can build

you a shaft to fit the driver head of
your choice. If you are serious, and
I mean extremely serious about
your game and equipment and
willing to shell out several hundred
dollars for a shaft and fitting, it is
well worth the investment. Yes,
it’s an investment in your enjoyment of the game. Remember,
stock shafts may or may not be the
shaft for you. I have always had the
driver shaft “pured” and frequency
checked.
This year I have added twenty
yards (average) to my tee ball
with a new fitted OBAN shaft. I’m
not saying OBAN is a panacea for
distance and control. There are
numerous wonderful shafts you
can use. Do some research and
ask your PGA Professional what
shaft may best suit your game and
swing.
Senior golfers, if you are willing
and able to do
strength training and stretching approved
by your physician and able
to spend a few
hundred bucks,
you too can add
distance and
control to your
golf shots.

An “All Inclusive” concept
In the fall of 2014 Seven Lakes Country
Club, a member owned Private club in
West End N.C. was facing it’s 2nd bankruptcy. The members decided to entertain the possibility of selling the property,
that’s where Larry Gallaway and Jay Iskow
come in.
The property was sold in January of 2015
and that is when Mr. Gallaway, the principle owner and Jay Iskow, the Managing
Partner set about changing the perception
and accessibility of the newly formed 7
Lakes Golf Club. The first task undertaken
was to change the branding of the 7 Lakes
Golf Club from a private inaccessible
venue, to a “Value Added” Semi-Private
Club that the daily fee player and the local
golf wholesalers would embrace.
The “All Inclusive” concept that worked
so well for the owners in Myrtle Beach
was implemented at 7 Lakes Golf Club.
The program provides Breakfast, Lunch
& 2-Premium draft beers included in
every full price green fee sold. In addition, a number of innovative programs
were launched to benefit the local players.
7 Lakes Loyalty Program provides local
residents with discounted “All Inclusive”
golf year round. The program also has
predetermined rewards for playing a specific number of rounds. Rewards include
hats, shirts, golf balls and golf bags.
One of the final programs that has been
rolled out to our local residents is the
Players Development Club. This program
provides for unlimited practice facility
access including all range balls. It also allows participants to play in the afternoon
(times vary with the season) FREE!!
