HONK!!
I think we can all relate to feeling like an outsider at some stage in our lives. That is what makes
The Ugly Duckling, by Hans Christian Andersen, so appealing and an inspiration.
It has been the subject of two Disney animations, the second winning an Academy Award. And it
has had many other incarnations. A piece of music for voice and piano. A musical. A Danish animation
and TV series. A children’s book using Tasmania, in Australia, as a setting. And now HONK! - winner of
three best musical awards including the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award (2000).
At its core is an optimistic message nailed by the Honk character, Bullfrog: “Somewhere out there,
someone’s gonna love ya, warts and all!” In other words, be yourself. Be true to yourself and, if that is not
working out, be patient. You just haven’t met the ones who will appreciate you most, but you will.
HONK! is a challenge. The music is complex, moving from jazz to ballads to show tunes. Unlike
Annie, the music is a part of the story. We don’t always stop for the big musical numbers. They run
throughout the story and dialogue.
And then there is the acting. Traditional farmyard characters, but with a contemporary feel. Not
human, but not animals. A lot of the jokes and one-liners come from this confusion.
As always, the All School Production is an amazing collaboration: OIS and SIS; teachers and
students and parents; young students with older; music, dance, singing, acting and the backstage and
technical responsibilities. Nobody on an ASP “helps out”… everyone contributes and it would not be the
same production without each of them.
