The hard work, commitment, energy and support of our
generous donors, grantees and nonprofit partners have
strengthened our community and made the Foundation a

Each generation leaves its own imprint for the next. As we
look ahead we know that we stand on the shoulders of our
founding Trustees, who had the vision to create The
Endowment Fund and whose commitment to serving the
Greater Hartford Jewish community has been passed on to us.
It is now up to us to continue to build and strengthen our
community in meaningful ways and collectively fulfill the

The Jewish Community Foundation was built on the dreams of community
leaders who, forty years ago, envisioned a foundation where Jewish
individuals and families could support the causes they care about and
help meet important community needs.
Those dreams are shared by the following individuals, families and
institutions who established funds at the Foundation this year. We hope
that, by telling their stories, you will better understand the unique value

Joan Brundage Charitable Gift Annuity
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
Eisen and Yass Family Fund
Joan’s desire to build a legacy for the Jewish community
inspired her to set up a second charitable gift annuity with
the Foundation. She will receive guaranteed payments
for her lifetime and make a future gift to the Jewish
community. Although Joan and her husband Lyle reside
in Florida, they feel strongly about their Hartford roots and
continue to build the Silverherz, Brundage and Rosenberg
Fund, which Joan’s parents endowed many years ago.
Joan hopes her children and grandchildren will continue
their family tradition of giving to the fund.
Mary-Jane Eisen and Robert Yass moved to the Greater
Hartford area in 1977 with the idea that they would stay
for a year or two to gain experience in their respective
professions. Now, thirty-five years later, they are grateful
that they chose to put down roots here, to raise their
children here, to make life-long friends here, to build their
careers here, and to engage in community service here in
both the secular and Jewish communities.

Bob and Mary-Jane feel their lives have been
enriched by their volunteerism. A graduate of the Wexner
Heritage program, Bob has served in leadership roles with
several local, state and national organizations including his
current role as first vice chair of the Jewish Federation of
Greater Hartford and chair of its Planning and Allocations
Committee.
Mary-Jane, too, has served on several boards over the
years, including the Connecticut Women’s Education and
Legal Fund and, currently, Jewish Family Services of Greater
Hartford and the Institute for Senior Living Education.

Ruth H. Cohn Fund
Through a generous bequest, Ruth Cohn made a lasting
legacy gift to the Greater Hartford Jewish community.
The fund that carries her name will work in perpetuity to
build a vibrant Jewish community and help the Foundation
meet the community’s most pressing and changing needs.
We are grateful for Ms. Cohn’s thoughtful remembrance
of our community.

In establishing a donor advised fund this year, Bob and
Mary-Jane were guided by the concept of dor l’dor. They
wanted to honor their parents, Charlotte and Milton Yass,
and Norbert Eisen of blessed memory, and Paula Eisen.
At the same time, they wanted their children, Alicia and
Warren Yass, to have the opportunity to practice
philanthropic decision-making in the future as well as
receive support for their current giving. This fund

Those who knew Bob Eisner remember how proud he
was of his contributions to the Jewish Federation. He was
born and raised in New Britain and moved to West Hartford
with his wife Laurel, of blessed memory, and their two
daughters. A retired accountant, Bob graduated from The
Wharton School and lived in New Britain for many years,
where he served as President of the New Britain Jewish
Federation. When Bob passed away this year, he left a
legacy for our community that will strengthen the many
local institutions he helped during his lifetime.
A SPECIAL TRIBUTE
Doreen Fundiller-Zweig Tribute Fund
When the former President & CEO of the Foundation
retired in December 2011, members of the Foundation
board and our community contributed to create a fund
that honors her many accomplishments. The fund enables
the Foundation to provide personalized philanthropic
advisory services and sponsor programs that strengthen
the Jewish community, including the Center on Good
Governance, Leave a Jewish Legacy and synagogue
endowment programs.

Shirley Goldman raised her

community. Shirley and her
daughter, Debi, reside in West
Hartford and are members of
Beth El Temple. Debi’s two
sons each became a bar

Shirley annually supports
the Temple to ensure Beth El
is financially secure, today and for generations to come. To
help meet operating needs and support a congregation which
means so very much to her and her family, Shirley established
a fund which will benefit Beth El Temple in perpetuity.
PRESERVING JEWISH HISTORY
Jewish Historical Society 40th Anniversary Fund
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Jewish Historical
Society of Greater Hartford (JHS), our community’s resource
for discovering, informing, preserving, and enjoying Jewish
history of our region. In May a special reception took place
celebrating JHS and the very special people who have
contributed to the long-term success of the organization.
JHS established a new endowment fund to commemorate
this milestone and continue to build resources to assure
its bright future.

Susan and Stanley Fellman
Stanley and Susan Fellman have long practiced tzedakah
as active members of the Jewish community. They have
been married for 45 years and raised their two daughters,
Elizabeth and Claire, in West Hartford. They are members
of Congregation Beth Israel.
Recognizing the synagogue’s need for a strong
endowment, the Fellmans created a charitable fund at the
Foundation as part of “Legacy for Our Future” providing support
to the temple today, and a secure future for tomorrow.
Stanley and Susan have two other funds at the Foundation,
including a scholarship of financial need based assistance
for students traveling to Israel in a locally or nationally
based program.

Passport to Israel Funds

Temple Beth El of Stamford Men's Club
Kaplin Scholarship Fund
The Passport to Israel program was created to encourage
travel to Israel for high school students as a means of
enhancing Jewish identity. Through the program, a fund
in the student’s name is created at the Foundation to hold
contributions made by the child’s parents and synagogue,
the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford and the Jewish
Community Foundation. When the student is ready to visit
Israel, the funds will be available to help offset the costs
of the trip.
The following students enrolled in the Passport to
Israel program this past year:
Jennifer and Todd Mailly and family
Temple Beth El of Stamford is an egalitarian synagogue
with members from multiple generations and diverse
backgrounds. Last year the Temple transferred a portion
of its endowment to the Jewish Community Foundation
for management.
Joan Solomkin Hoberman
This year the Men’s Club transferred additional funds
from the Edward J. Kaplin and Eve K. Kaplin Memorial
Scholarship that will be used for the award of educational
scholarships to graduating Jewish high school seniors from
the City of Stamford and adjacent communities.

Mailly Family Fund
When Jennifer and Todd Mailly moved to West Hartford
in 1994, they sought a synagogue that would provide the
warm reform community that Jennifer had known growing
up, while welcoming all members of their interfaith family.
Congregation Beth Israel was that place. In the eighteen
years since, Carly, Maddie and Abby have each in turn
become a bat mitzvah, been confirmed and served as a
madricha. The Beth Israel community has supported the
family through simchas and losses, and is an essential part
of their lives.
The Maillys are grateful that members of the Jewish
community built this synagogue and supported it for years
before they arrived in town. Through their family fund
they have established an endowment for Congregation
Beth Israel’s Legacy for Our Future. They hope to do the
same for future generations – keeping Congregation
Beth Israel strong for those seeking a vibrant reform
Jewish community in Greater Hartford for themselves
and their children in the years to come.

Judy and Ron Schlossberg Fund
Judy Schlossberg has been a proud and involved member of
Women’s Philanthropy for 14 years. In 2001 her husband
Ron celebrated her special birthday by making her a Lion
of Judah. Three years later, after increasing to a Ruby Lion
and understanding the value of “leaving a legacy”, Judy
established a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) introducing
her family to the Jewish Community Foundation and the
commitment of “giving in perpetuity.”
As Judy and Ron deepened their involvement in the
Jewish community, they gained an increased understanding of
the need to extend support beyond their annual giving. In
2011, Judy’s beloved father, and the father-in-law that Ron
adored, passed away. Sol was an extraordinary individual.
He was loving, attentive, generous, and kind and passed on
these traits to his large family of 5 children. With the desire to
honor his memory, Judy and Ron were inspired to establish
a donor advised fund in his loving memory. The Solomon
H. Krasney Fund will compassionately support those in our
community who require assistance, consistent with the
values that Sol Krasney exhibited throughout his life.

A DAUGHTER’S LEGACY LIVES ON
Mark and Ruth Solomkin Fund in memory of Joan
Ruth Solomkin could think of no more meaningful way
to honor the memory of her beloved daughter, Joan, than
to establish a fund that carries Joan’s name. The Mark and
Ruth Solomkin Fund benefits Congregation Beth Israel,
which was an integral part of her family’s life. Many family
simchas were celebrated at the Temple.
Joan was confirmed and married at Congregation Beth
Israel. Her children, Julie and Anna were also confirmed at
Beth Israel. Joan was a kind and caring person. Ruth smiles
when she thinks about Joan’s positive outlook on life, her
abundant heart and concern for the welfare of others.
A graduate of Kingswood-Oxford and Smith College,
Joan taught at the Vine Street School and later became
curriculum director of the Children's Discovery Center
of Essex. When Joan passed away in 1997, Ruth found
comfort in prayer, counsel from the rabbi and
support from the Beth Israel community.
ENRICHING THEIR LIVES
Carolyn and Elliott Tertes Family Fund
Over many years, Carolyn and Elliott have visited friends
and family who have been in the position of needing
rehabilitation or long-term care services at Hebrew Health
Care. They know that no one wants to be in a nursing
home. However, if you need to be in a caregiving
environment, the Tertes’ believe you can’t top the
extensive services that Hebrew Health Care offers.
Members of their family have used Hospice, Home Health
Care, the rehabilitation unit, the acute care hospital,
physical therapy as well as the nursing home. They
recognize that health care in any environment is not
perfect, but always realized that at Hebrew Health Care
there is a constant attitude and direction to achieve
excellence in delivering the best care possible.
This year Elliott and Carolyn created an endowment
fund to benefit Hebrew Health Care. Their goal in
creating this gift is to help ensure that they, as part of
the community, are helping Hebrew Health Care deliver
this broad range of services well into the future.
As Elliott says, “If we wish to preserve Jewish
culture in Greater Hartford, a legacy gift that we
create will come back to us by enriching our lives
and the lives of our family, friends and
children many times over.”

SUPPORTING JEWISH LIFE ON CAMPUS
University of Connecticut Hillel Fund
Today, when university students are faced with a
bewildering array of possibilities, choosing to participate
in Jewish life on campus must be made a compelling
option. It is Hillel’s challenge to provide engaging,
meaningful experiences – experiences that will frame
their future. As the foundation of campus Jewish
community, Hillel at the University of Connecticut, under
the leadership of President Shari Cantor and Executive
Director Gary Wolff, is enjoying a renaissance through
its activities, programs and services.
With more than 2,000 Jewish undergraduate
and graduate students, Hillel in Storrs is a portal for
warm community, leadership opportunities, retreats,
international travel, holiday celebrations and more. This
year’s events included a Welcome Back BBQ, a comedy
night with noted producer/writer Andy Borowitz and
participation in the University-wide “month of kindness.”

funds to the Jewish Community Foundation this year.
Building Hillel’s dedicated endowment will allow
programs to become self-sustaining, ensuring a
vibrant Hillel well into the future.

Judy, Eric and Jessica Zachs
created an endowment for
Jewish Family Services of
Greater Hartford in honor of its 100th anniversary.
Since 1912, Jewish Family Services has served adults
and children in need without regard to age, religion,
economic circumstances or race. JFS has nourished the
hungry, aided the jobless, provided mental health
counseling, and supported programs for older adults and
persons with disabilities. The Zachs family fund will
support the organization in perpetuity and ensure that in
times of need, any member of our community has a place
to go for assistance.
HONORING A LIFE
Howard Siegal Fund and Howard J. Siegal Memorial Fund
This year our Jewish community lost a good friend, Howard Siegal. Deeply-rooted in his
West Hartford community, Howard’s dedication to service was far-reaching. Through his
family business, Edart Truck Leasing, as well as on his own, Howard continued the legacy of
his parents, the late Ruth and Edward Siegal. Howard and his wife, Lois, have been generous
donors and tireless community supporters. They have created multiple funds at the Foundation
including the Howard and Lois Siegal Community Unrestricted Fund.
Howard held many key leadership positions at the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford –
serving as both a Board and Life Member. He was a Wexner Fellow, a recipient of the Young
Leadership Award, and most recently was presented with the President's Award in September
2011. He served as President and a Patron of the Arts of the Mandell Jewish Community
Center, was a Board Member of Hebrew Health Care, and a board member of the Bushnell
Center for the Performing Arts. He supported many organizations including the Hartford
Stage, the Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford,
Jewish Association for Community Living, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and many others.
Howard dedicated his life to volunteerism and serving his
neighbors with his involvement in programs that supported
less fortunate individuals. Howard inspired with his passion
and commitment to give back to the community.

Jessica P. Zachs Fund
Following a long standing tradition of family philanthropy,
Judy Zachs established a charitable fund at the Foundation
to honor the birthday of her daughter-in-law, Jessica.
The Zachs have prepared their children and grandchildren
for the joy – and responsibility – of giving back to the
community. The Jessica P. Zachs Fund will enable Jessica
to award grants from her fund to support worthwhile
charitable programs, while continuing the family’s
commitment to the Jewish community.
Foundation established the Howard J. Siegal Memorial
Fund in memory of Howard, who passed away in May
2012. He served as a Trustee of the Foundation from 20062012. This fund will support the Jewish Federation of

remembered Howard by establishing The Howard
Siegal Fund. This fund will support the Mandell
Jewish Community Center as well as the

While Howard will be missed by his family,
friends, and community – his passion and vision
will live on through these funds.

ten Polish classmates and how the murder of Jewish
residents in the village of Jedwabne during
WWII changed their lives

The play spans eighty years, crossing between Poland and
America. As these Polish classmates – 5 Catholic, 5 Jewish –
grow up, their lives take dramatically unexpected turns as
their country is torn apart by invading armies, first Soviet
and then German. Based on true events in the Polish
town of Jedwabne and inspired in part by Jan Gross’
controversial book Neighbors, Our Class bravely explores
a subject still debated today.

Divorce Workshop
To sponsor workshops for families dealing with divorce
through the Parent Education Program (PEP) and Focus
on K.I.D.S
The court mandated Parent Education Program (PEP) and
Focus on K.I.D.S. helps with the negative effects of divorce
on a family. Conflict between parents, whether living
together or apart, are associated with many negative
outcomes in children. The Focus on K.I.D.S. program helps
parents, who are living apart, learn how to nurture and
support their children and to develop ways to effectively
work together as co-parents. Facilitators work with
parents to resolve issues before they escalate to a level
where a judge must intervene.

Grants from unrestricted, donor advised
and designated funds comprise the majority
of charitable dollars distributed by the
Foundation each year. In 2012, the Foundation
awarded $3.197 million in grants to qualified charities — here in Greater Hartford, nationally,
in Israel and around the world. Grants support new initiatives, emergency needs, social services,
education, arts and culture and a broad spectrum of other charitable causes and institutions.
Located on Kibbutz Merav, overlooking the Jordan River
Valley, Bet Hayeled is a loving home for children removed
by the courts from their birth parents. A group of 10
children are provided all their basic needs and a sense of
belonging and responsibility to the kibbutz community.
Many Bet Hayeled graduates settle near or on the kibbutz
as adults, confirming their loving connection with their
adopted home.

To provide livestock and training to women in
order to help end hunger around the world

15-year old Johanna Emilie Justin-Jinich,
Julia’s Star illustrates how curiosity,
friendship, knowledge and trust can overcome
prejudice. Johanna was raised in a liberal multicultural
household in a small city in the Western United States.
The story reflects her personal identity and her history as
a descendant of survivors of the Holocaust. It reveals her
nascent interest in helping others transcend their old
cultural roots to overcome barriers that foment
misunderstanding, intolerance and injustice. The tragic
ending to her life while a college student, cut short by an
assassin who despised her Jewish heritage, makes the
reading of her story poignant and a fitting memorial.
A communitywide program
based on the
example of
Abraham and
Sarah’s “Big
Tent.” The goal
of this program is
to help local synagogues and agencies create an
environment that is open and welcoming to all, and to
engage Jews who are not currently involved with
synagogues and agencies. Big Tent Judaism, a program of
the Jewish Outreach Initiative, addresses the critical issues
of engagement, affiliation, education, belonging, and
knowledge in the Greater Hartford Jewish community.

Ox-box Monitors
To purchase monitors that track patient reaction
to medications
The hand-held Pulse Oximeter monitor, or “ox-box,” is a
small device that fits over the index finger and provides
convenient and continuous monitoring of patients'
oxygen saturation levels and pulse rates. Oxygen is
vital to cell functions, and almost all cells get their
oxygen from the blood. A low pulse oxygen reading
is often an indicator of a medical emergency.
These measurements are important indicators
in demonstrating how
patients react to
certain medications.

childhood education philosophy
A capacity building grant will help transform The Early
Childhood Program into one that
is rooted in Jewish values and follows
the values and philosophy of the
Reggio Emilia approach, which
focuses on fostering relationships
among children, teachers, parents,
and community. This approach builds
on the premise that each child has
the desire to connect with others,
to engage in learning, and to enter
into a relationship with his or her
environment.
