N
o subject generates
more interest than e-mail
on board. Virtually every
cruiser needs to communicate
with shoreside; the Internet is now
their preferred method.
Cruisers most commonly choose
relatively economical HF radio email—whether Ham or SSB.
However, they often find that
sending data over a radio link is
challenging—radio e-mail is simply
not as reliable as using a telephone
connection, either traditional or
satellite. There are countless variables—propagation, radio installation, and antenna performance all
play roles in connection quality.
We’re constantly searching for solutions that stack the deck more in
favor of reliability; we think we’ve
found a winning hand with the
ICOM M802 SSB and the SCS
Pactor-II modem.
SCS PTC-II Modems have the highest HF data transfer rate, the best
weak signal performance, and
simple direct radio frequency control—they’re the robust and eastto-use radio e-mail modem available. ICOM’s M802 is its perfect
complement with the highest
level of frequency accuracy—critical for making and maintaining
data connections. The M802 is
designed for 150 watts continuous
output, which more than meets
data transmission demands. It also
requires no hardware or software
modification to correctly manage
data connections without spurious
signals or cumbersome wiring.
We received this e-mail during the
‘06 Pacific Cup: “Just a note to
tell you that all equipment is working flawlessly. The radio programming sure makes operating convenient, and the e-mail with our SCS
Modem and ICOM SSB is the
slickest thing yet.” Many other
cruisers think so, too.
Networking
W
ith the advent of new
technology, there are
new wrinkles in the perennially untidy business of networking marine instruments.
Radar Solutions
FURUNO NAVNET RADARS
Simple integration with ethernet
Introducing NavNet vx2
Radar/Chart Plotters: marine instruments that support integration with standard ethernet hardware
and software. You have
the flexibility to create a
variety of bridge configurations—up to four stations—and you can add
NavNet vx2 sounders,
GPS, depth instruments,
or even a computer and
MaxSea through a single
cable. All units also support NMEA 0183 electronics, too.
Most marine electronics hardware
is NMEA 0183 compatible and
uses a standard communications
“grammar” for all marine electronic devices so that equipment from
the same and different vendors
would work together. Some marine electronics devices are “talkers” while others are “listeners”
and still others are both. A talker’s
NMEA 0183 “sentences” contain
information about its device type
and status as well as the critical information that it was designed to
provide—such as latitude, longitude, etc. NMEA 0183 sentences
are transmitted over PC serial connections as well as through internal communications paths.
Ethernet, on the other hand, is a
standard for electronic communication that can be seen in virtually
every location where computers
are networked together. It is mechanically simple, using cables
that are similar to modular telephone connectors, and extremely
flexible, allowing literally hundreds
of instruments (like NavNet) and
computers to talk with each other
using inexpensive hubs, switches,
and routers to manage signals.
USB—universal serial bus—is related to the serial port, but more
flexible and robust. You name it—
printers, mice, cameras—there’s a
USB version available. Marine
equipment, however, with the exception of RADARpc, is not directly USB-compatible. USB is important, however, because it is the
most simple, reliable way to add
serial ports for radio or satellite email and navigation. Often, computers do not have even a single
port from the factory.
Furuno NavNet vx2 systems are fully modular, and there are endless
possibilities for system configuration. Here’s one of the most popular:

C
omputer charting and
navigation programs are
exciting innovations for
boaters. With detailed color
charts and capable software to display and manage them, boaters
now can bring the highest quality
navigation information on board.
And, with more powerful, less expensive computers, boaters now
can own a navigation system that
costs less than a single-function
chart plotter and handles an array
of functions from weather forecasting to communications.

All computer charting and navigation programs work similarly.
First, the software is transferred
onto the hard disk of a desktop or
notebook computer. The
computer’s serial port then is connected to a GPS receiver that provides position information. Electronic charts that are available on
floppy disks or CD-ROM’s also
can be loaded on the computer’s
hard disk or accessed directly.
When the navigation program
starts, it receives the current position from the GPS, displays the appropriate chart for that position,
and marks position on the chart.
As the vessel moves, position
changes are updated. Typically,
information such as the vessel’s
heading and speed also are displayed. Courses and routes can
be entered by pointing and clicking on the chart, rather than by
typing in numbers, and stored for
future use.
Charting software is a wonderful
navigation aid. However, it is designed to supplement navigation
information from other sources
and should not be used as a sole
source of information. As errors
and malfunctions are possible with
any system, please carry alternate
navigation aids, continue utilizing
traditional navigation methods,
and maintain a proper watch.
Visit www.waypoints.com for additional navigation software products and information.
Computer Health
K
eeping computers healthy
onboard is easy. Just:
1. Keep computers from direct
contact with water. Locate your
system away from frequentlysplashed areas and consider a watertight storage case. However,
while all boats are moist, moisture
(even salty, damp air) does not
seem to harm computers.
2. Secure computer systems. No
computer will perform after it’s
tossed around in a seaway. All
systems should be secured firmly
with brackets or high-tension
Velcro® to keep them attached to
tables or nav stations.
3. Give computers clean, reliable
power. While some notebook
computers come with 12V direct
connections, we do not recommend that you use them. These
adapters are designed for automobile charging systems that provide
less noisy, more constant power
than marine systems. We recommend that you use a small, dedicated inverter to power your computer via its 110V charger. The inverter provides inexpensive protection from any noise on your
boat’s 12V system, as well as more
efficient power conversion than a
large house inverter.
4. Keep backup copies of software. Accidents happen; data
can be lost. Make sure you can
restore your system if you lose or
delete files. For convenience, consider a backup device; some
newer notebook systems offer optional internal CD-RW capability.
5. Protect external metal connectors with a moisture displacer.
Generally, we do not see corrosion on computers, even after
years at sea. Taking care to wipe
away any visible salt and keeping
connectors lightly sprayed with a
moisture displacer (Corrosion X,
Boeshield, or CRC CO) will assure
that no corrosion starts. Do NOT
use petroleum jelly or spray lubricants (such as WD-40).

COASTAL EXPLORER
Sophisticated functions; great value!
Sail Magazine reports
that Coastal Explorer is
“stable, well-crafted,
and loaded with fresh
ideas...a humdinger of a
new PC charting program”. We think you’ll
agree.
Coastal Explorer includes new S-57 ENC
charts for U. S. coastal
and inland areas and supports Maptech and SoftChart raster charts,
too. It automatically quilts all charts together—even photos—for a
seamless view and integrates tidal data and sailing directions automatically for complete information on screen. Virtual instrument displays and obstacle alerts make boat handling simpler, too.
Coastal Explorer supports most AIS receivers for advanced targeting
and collision avoidance. It’s a great value, too—the entire navigation
software package including a library of charts for U. S. waters costs
less than the targeting add-on for other products.

P
AIS
icture a shipboard display
with electronic chart data
that includes a mark for every ship within VHF radio range.
Then, add information that shows
speed and heading. Each mark
could reflect the acutal size of the
ship and report its latitude and longitude. If you selected the mark
you could learn the ship’s name,
course, speed, classification, and
other information. Maneuvering
information, closest point of approach, time to closest point of approach, and other target information would also be available as
well as destination. In other
words, you’d have much of the information that’s available to the
VTS at your fingertips.
This information can be yours
NOW with an inexpensive AIS—
Automatic Identification System—
receiver, navigation software that
supports AIS display, and an
onboard computer.
AIS is a system used by ships and
vessel traffic systems to identify
vessels at sea. Radio transponders
are integrated with GPS systems
and other navigation equipment to
report vessel movement automatically. Ships of greater than 300
gross tons are required to install
AIS; other smaller commercial vessels are installing systems as well.
Because a given area of ocean can
get very crowded, vessels that are
anchored or are moving slowly
transmit less frequently than those
moving faster or changing course.
Each transponder transmits on two
redundant channels and can be
“seen” for approximately 20 nautical miles (with direct line of sight).
Recreational boaters are not required to have AIS transponders
onboard. However, many are installing inexpensive receivers that
integrate with nav software to display AIS information on computer.
It’s a great aid for collision avoidance in waters crowded with big
ships and provides information to
supplement radar.
Electronic Charts
Electronic Charts
N
o computer charting/
navigation system is
complete until it can access electronic charts. Charts are
available from five primary vendors in four proprietary formats at
an array of prices. Individually,
they cost about what a paper
chart would; CD collections cost
much less. Most are raster images—color “pictures” of a paper
chart. They include all information that you would find on the
charts from which they are
scanned, such as depth markings,
buoys, and more. Vector charts
for computers are just being released and share similar information.
Electronic charts need to be updated just like paper charts. You
can update an electronic chart in
many ways. The simplest, least
expensive—and most labor-intensive—is to hand-enter update information that is referenced in the
Coast Guard’s Local Notices to
Mariners. This requires that your
charting software be annotationcapable. Each manufacturer
handles this option differently, so
you may want to investigate its
method before selecting an application. Local Notices to Mariners
are available as a free weekly mailing from the U. S. Coast Guard or
may be accessed from the Internet
at http://www. navcen.uscg.mil.
NGA also offers NTM updates on
its web site at www.nima.mil (follow links to the Marine Safety section).
Electronic chart vendors offer update options that make correcting
your charts fast and easy—for a
fee. Most offer update CD’s to
provide users with current chart
versions. Update downloads are
promised; call us or consult our
web site for details and prices.

Vector vs. Raster
MAPTECH
Chart around the world
A
re vector charts better
than rasters? Each has advantages.
A raster chart is an exact replica—a
picture—of a paper chart. To create it, a chart litho master or the paper chart itself is scanned to create
a computer image. Then, geographical information is linked to
the image to create a latitude/longitude grid that allows GPS position
$279.95 information to be plotted. File sizes
$279.95 range from 0.5-5 Mb, depending
$279.95 on the amount of detail.

A vector chart, however, is a representation of paper chart information produced by drawing and classifying “objects”—numerical constructs of visual information. Objects can be simple or complex, visual or informational, and can be
arranged in relationships to one another. Because the chart data is
numeric rather than graphic, file
sizes are at least tenfold smaller.
Vector charts often are called “intelligent” because information can
be displayed at will. However,
they may look very different than
their paper counterparts, while the
raster chart is an exact copy.
Historically, vector charts have
been available only as “chips”—
cartridges that fit into plotters,
which have not had the processing
power to read and manipulate
graphic data. Computer-readable
vectors now are available. The
newest are ENC’s—Electronic Navigational Charts—that are free from
NOAA and compatible navigation
software vendors. ENC’s feature excellent detail and a wealth of hidden information. They’re still experimental, though, may not be up
to date, and do not cover all U. S.
waters.
Not all navigation software is vector-capable, so if vector functions
are important, choose a vector-capable program.
Charting the Future
W
Traditional Navigation Equipment
e just take charts, particularly the traditional
government paper versions, for granted. After all, they’re
always going to be there.
Maybe not, particularly in the case
of charts that are produced by the
U. S. Government for locations
outside of U. S. waters. These
charts could become unavailable
in the very near future.
International charts are produced
by the National
Geospatialintelligence Agency
(NGA)—part of the Department
of Defense. In many cases, they
do not survey when creating a
new chart; they, instead, will use
local cartography. Up to the early
nineties, cartography was shared
freely. At that time a series of
cross-licensing agreements were
negotiated to allow sharing. Recently, however, a number of nations decided to terminate licensing altogether, because of security
and copyright concerns. When
the licenses are terminated, charts
no longer can be produced except
by the country that “owns” them,
which means that:

K
eeping charts up-to-date
can be a struggle, particularly when the new chart
you’ve purchased needs correcting
even before you’ll use it the first
time! NOAA’s Print on Demand
(POD) charts help solve part of
your updating problems by providing a chart that is printed only
when you need it, with all corrections made to date.
How does Print on Demand work?
First, NOAA cartographers generate an electronic version of one of
the thousands of charts for U. S.
waters. They then update the
electronic data with any corrections that are necessary, weekly.
When a chart agent orders a chart,
a full-sized paper version of the updated electronic file is printed.
POD charts look much like their
traditional lithographed counterparts. Their colors are, however,
brighter so they’re easier to read.
They’re available in two finishes:
water-resistant paper or laminated
in matte plastic to be completely
water and abrasion proof.
POD versions of most charts for U.
S. waters are available. Select either the recreational version,
which includes cruiser-friendly
tidal, marina, and local data, or the
commercial version that includes
VTS and pilot contacts.
Finally, “print on demand” does
mean “print on site”. The printing
technology required to produce a
chart with sufficient accuracy for
navigation, while expensive, is
now available from a select group
of chart agents. We’re one of
them. It takes around five minutes
to produce a chart—fast, easy, always in stock, and always up to
date.
Visit www.waypoints.com for POD
selection. Order online for will-call
pickup or call us with your order;
we’ll have your charts waiting!
P
Datum
eriodically, we get a rather
aggrieved call from a customer who tells us that a
particular chart—usually electronic
or for foreign waters—is inaccurate. They’re plotted on land instead of in an anchorage, or
they’re consistently a mile west of
their actual position. What gives?
Charts are occasionally inaccurate,
but most of the time mis-plotting is
an issue of datum. A datum is a
reference point used to measure
other points. A chart’s horizontal
datum defines a particular mathematical shape for the earth—it’s
not a perfect sphere—that allows a
cartographer to establish a latitude/longitude grid (a graticule)
for a chart. Modern charts use the
WGS84 datum—World Geodetic
System, 1984; most GPS units assume this datum is in use.
However, some older charts continue to use alternate datums. No
problem—unless your GPS datum
and chart datum disagree. If they
do, an incorrect latitude/longitude
grid will be applied to the GPS position relative to the chart, and
your position will appear to be
misreported. To correct matters,
just alter the datum your GPS
uses; you’ll find several dozen in
its memory for this contingency.
Datum is typically reported in a
chart’s title block, which can be
viewed directly on an electronic
chart or accessed through a charting software’s chart info field.
Some programs will even warn
you when a chart with an odd datum is accessed.
Learn more about navigation and
cartography with Dutton’s Navigation and Piloting—a classic reference. If you’re looking for something more readable, try

R
ed sky at night, sailor’s delight... This simple rhyme is
probably the first marine
weather forecasting tool you used.
It’s a good one—red skies indicate
dry air to the west with fair
weather on the way—but, before
venturing offshore, more information is imperative. For comprehensive, current, reliable information, marine weather facsimile
charts are the standard.
Weather fax transmissions are similar to faxes you receive via telephone. The sender’s fax machine
scans a document and processes it
into line after line of dots—black,
white, and grays. It then translates
the dots into tones, where a tone’s
pitch corresponds to the color of a
dot. If you’ve “listened” to a fax,
you probably heard warbling, high
and low pitched tones. As your
fax decoder “hears” the tones, it
translates them back into dots
and, subsequently, characters.
Instead of using phone lines, a
weather station’s fax broadcasts
over marine SSB. Specialized
computer hardware/software
packages allow sailors to connect
a PC to the audio output of a SSB
receiver to collect and decode the
broadcast information automatically.
Weather fax information typically
consists of up to a dozen different
kinds of synoptic weather charts
that show the meteorological conditions over a given area. Approximately 70 stations around the
world broadcast charts for their
area, so it is possible to get
weather charts almost everywhere.
Their interpretation, however, is
left to you, so an understanding of
marine weather is necessary to
fully use them. Starpath’s
Weather Trainer is an excellent
tool for learning to understand marine weather and interpret weather
charts. Visit www.waypoints.com
for details.
HF Radio
M
arine Single Side Band
or Ham—what’s the
difference? None—in
terms of range, clarity or installation. Both transmit and receive
within the 2-30 MHz bands of the
radio frequency spectrum, so the
laws of physics say that they will
work similarly.
There are big differences in licenses and permitted use:
1. License requirements for a marine SSB are the same as for a
VHF: a ship’s license—endorsed
for SSB frequencies—and a Restricted Radiotelephone License.
Yes, you’ll still need them, especially if you’re bound for foreign
waters. No testing is involved—fill
out the form and send the FCC
your money. See page 19 for licensing details.
2. The minimal, useful license for
worldwide Ham use is the General. You must pass a test on radio theory and rules and receive
Morse Code at 5 words per
minute. The code requirement
may be eliminated soon.
3. You cannot use Ham radio to
do business that generates profit
for you. For example, you can order parts from a supplier—you
don’t profit from the transaction.
Otherwise, you can do many of
the same things on Ham radio as
on SSB.
Ham and SSB equipment differ. A
true marine SSB is designed for
simple operation on marine frequencies and can be operated
while knowing little of the radio itself. While Ham radio hardware
can be modified—illegally—to
transmit on marine frequencies, it
is more difficult and confusing to
operate. Many individuals choose
a hybrid radio—type accepted for
both marine SSB and Ham frequencies—because it is a true marine SSB that operates like a simple
Ham radio at a price comparable
to Ham-only transceivers.

1. Antenna systems are critical;
however, there are no hard-andfast rules for developing one. You
may need to experiment; generally
nothing you can try will make a
system NOT work—some things
will make it better or worse.
2. Power—not how much capacity you have (amp hours), but
how much your system can deliver (amps, voltage drop)—is key.
Your electrical system must deliver
25-30 amps to the radio with less
than three percent difference between the battery terminals and
the radio. Voltage regulation also
must be considered; other devices
typically run with your radio. It’s
just like a shower—if you have insufficient water pressure (voltage
drop) or the pipes are too small
(amps), the water stops flowing
when a faucet is opened.
3. Connections between the antenna tuner and the radio must be
physically and electrically secure.
Early on, we found that many customers did not have the tools, materials, or skill to install RF connections. Now, we manufacture custom cable sets that are secure, water-tight, and electrically optimal;
all you need to do is route the
cable and connect it to the radio.

Marine VHF Radio
DSC
any boaters have heard
that they someday will
be required to use marine radios with DSC—Digital Selective Calling capability. Few realize, however, that DSC-VHF and
HF radios are available, that DSC
safety functions are fully-implemented outside of U. S. waters,
and that non-emergency functions
make DSC radios a treat to use.
DSC uses transmission of a specially-encoded data burst to establish communication between two
or more radios. Originally conceived as a link between boats
and Coast Guard safety services,
DSC safety monitoring has been
implemented only for HF in U. S.
waters. Many other countries
around the world use DSC for
emergency hailing, and DSC radios are required for most commercial vessels over 300 tons.
What happens when you place a
distress call with a DSC-equipped
radio? All DSC radios are programmed with a SSID—a code
that is related to your FCC Ship’s
Station license. When you press
the “panic button”, the radio calls
every DSC-equipped radio in
range, sounds an alarm, transmits
your vessel ID information, and
switches all radios to a common
frequency. You are required to
have a GPS receiver connected to
your radio so that your position
lat/lon is transmitted, too.
DSC radios shine in non-emergency functions, too. Imagine—
you’re buddy-boating with friends
who also have DSC-equipped VHF
radios. You would like to hail
each other, but you know how unreliable and annoying it can be to
monitor CH 16 or any open hailing frequency. With DSC radios,
you can initiate an “individualship“ call that will cause your
friends’ radios to “ring”, then
move to a working channel to exchange information. This function
works even if volume is low or radios are tuned to other channels.

F
CC license applications generate more calls for help
than any other issue we support. The forms are difficult to understand and change frequently
without notice, and there’s confusion about who needs a license
and for what equipment. Here are
some license basics:
1. A FCC Ship’s Station license is
not needed for marine VHF radios,
radar, or EPIRB’s if you don’t venture into international waters. If
you’re cruising—even to Canada
or Mexico—you need a license.
2. A FCC license is required in U.
S. waters if you have a marine SSB
radio. You must also have a marine VHF radio on board.
3. If you purchase a used boat
with a FCC license, you must apply for a new one. Licenses are
not transferrable.
4. You must have a FCC license to
use SailMail or other SSB e-mail
services. Your Ship’s Station Call
Sign becomes part of your e-mail
address.
Coverage areas encircled
Skymate Coverage
5. You must have a FCC license to
fully enable the safety features of
Inmarsat C. A SSID number is issued with your license.
6. You can request that applications for your licenses be sent to
you by calling the FCC at (800)
418-3676. Applications are also
available on-line, and you can
now apply for your licenses on
line as well.
Comparing costs for voice and data communication is difficult, but
the table above will help you start exploring options. Visit
www.hfradio.com for complete details and pricing on these and
other communication systems plus more information that will help
you decide which system is right for you.

7. If you need help completing
the forms, call (888) 225-5322.
This is also the correct number to
call to confirm the license fees—
currently $220 (code PASR).
If you’re really confused with the
FCC licensing process, we can
help. Just provide a few simple
pieces of information and pay a
small fee, and we’ll handle your
application for you.

“Whether you’re cruising the Bay...
...or cruising the world, first cruise the web!” With
ready access to broadband internet technology and $3
per gallon gasoline, more and more sailors are
shopping online. With this trend, we though it only
proper that the Souris 95 be our “cover girl” this year.
The Souris features a custom rig and sail plan that tops
her production hull. At a compact 95 millimeters,
she’s capable of tucking into the tightest anchorages—
truly a mini (or, dare we say, “Minnie”) in a world of
ever larger yachts.
Our Souris helps us find the finest navigation and
communications products—more than we can ever
hope to catalog here. We’ve chosen some of our
favorites for this year’s catalog, which, we hope, will point the way for you to our online
home port for more information and solutions for the nautically inclined.
