Meet Superintendent Gregory Franklin
During a new teacher orientation workshop, Superintendent Gregory Franklin served as a guide
and took 37 new teachers on a school bus tour of various schools throughout the district.
By Mark Eliot, Director of Communications and Public Information
The Tustin Unified School District welcomes
Dr. Gregory Franklin as its new superintendent.
He began work on July 1.
Dr. Franklin took over for Supt. Richard Bray, who retired in June after
serving 43 years in public education – the past five years as superintendent of
the Tustin school district.
“I am honored to take over a district known for its academic excellence, dedicated employees, involved parents and a supportive community,” Dr. Franklin
said. “Retired Superintendent Richard Bray has set the bar high and we will
continue to offer a world-class educational experience for our high-achieving
students.”
Dr. Franklin will oversee a $165 million budget, 29 schools and over 23,000
students.
“He comes to us with excellent credentials,” TUSD Board President Lynn
Davis said. “His innovative programs, community leadership, experience in facilities and technology, and strong background in education will be an asset to the
district.”
Dr. Franklin has worked in public education for 25 years – the past four
serving as superintendent of the Los Alamitos Unified School District. Prior to

Carbon Monoxide
Effective July 1, 2011, a new law may help prevent senseless
carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the home. CO is formed from the
incomplete lighting of any flame-fueled (i.e., not electric) device
including ranges, ovens, clothes dryers, furnaces, fireplaces, grills,
space heaters, vehicles, and water heaters. Carbon monoxide can be
dangerous –when inhaled, it passes from the lungs into the hemoglobin molecules of red blood cells. The result is that the body
becomes oxygen-starved, which can lead to tissue damage and death.
Many reported cases of carbon monoxide poisoning say
Chief Keith Richter
that while victims are aware they are not well, they become
so disoriented that they are not able to save themselves by leaving the building
or calling for assistance. Carbon monoxide alarms are designed to alert residents
before exposure to CO causes a health hazard.
Carbon monoxide is a tasteless, odorless, and invisible gas. Low levels of CO
poisoning can cause shortness of breath, mild headaches, nausea, and fainting.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is the leading cause of accidental poisoning
deaths in the United States according to the American Medical Association.
Per California Senate Bill 183, beginning July 1, 2011, all existing single family
homes must have carbon monoxide alarms. All other types of residences (apartments, condominiums, etc.) will need carbon monoxide alarms beginning January
1, 2013. The law does not designate local fire departments as enforcing agencies.
The new requirements apply if ANY of the following are present within a home:
• Attached garage
• Natural gas or propane furnace and/or natural gas range and/or oven, or
Gas or wood-burning fireplace.
For existing homes, the CO alarms may be battery powered. At a minimum,
CO alarms are required: Outside of each sleeping area or bedroom and on each
level of the home.

Dr. Marc Lerner is New Medical Officer
The research is clear; healthy children are more likely to have
positive outcomes in school. Until now, financial restraints have
made it difficult to expand health related services in our schools.
The scale of this challenge was understood by our partners who
have stepped up to make a new investment on behalf of our
youth. It is with this generous support that we are pleased to
announce that Orange County children and families have a new
health champion, Dr. Marc Lerner.
As Medical Officer (M.O.) with the Orange County Department
William M.
of Education (OCDE), Dr. Lerner joins a proactive education
Habermehl
community that is focusing on student well-being as a critical
Superintendent
feature that leads to academic success. Dr. Lerner is an
esteemed professional, an Orange County resident, and an active leader in the
medical community. As a Board Certified General, Developmental and Behavioral
Pediatrician, and a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and the Chief of the Division of
Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics for the University of California Irvine,
Medical School, Dr. Lerner has addressed important clinical issues and research
for Orange County children and their families. A recipient of the Halo Award
from the Orange County School Nurse Association in 2007, Dr. Lerner is well
respected in the community as a leader in the field of pediatrics.
Dr. Lerner’s will offer consultation services on youth related medical and health
issues for the education community. He will join with members of the existing OCDE
health and wellness team to support the physical health and mental well-being of
children from preschool through high school. A comprehensive approach to health,
wellness, nutrition, physical education, the prevention of mental health problems,
and emergency preparedness supports Orange County youth to develop the foundation they need to achieve excellence in their learning and to reach their full potential.
The vision and financial support for this inaugural position of Medical Officer
reflects a shared mission along with a generous investment by the Orange County
Health Care Agency, Hoag Hospital, and the Children and Families Commission of
Orange County. Each agency has committed financial resources and will join a
select group of health and community partners who have volunteered their
expertise to serve on an advisory group for this effort. The goal is to advance
student wellness and in doing so, support the OCDE goal of ensuring a world
class education where every student succeeds.

The Kindergarten Readiness Program
By Lauralee Cabibi, Kindergarten Readiness Coordinator
The Tustin Unified School District’s Kindergarten Readiness
Program will begin its ninth year of providing quality preschool
services for the four-year-olds in our Tustin community. Through
the years this program has evolved to meet the needs of local families.
Kindergarten Readiness is offered at six different preschool
sites in the elementary schools. It provides health services for
preschoolers as well as a quality, research-based curriculum. But
Kathie Nielsen one of its greatest achievements has been the parent education/
Chief Academic
involvement program.
Officer
Knowing that parents are a child’s first and most important
teacher, Kindergarten Readiness provides many opportunities for them to
participate in educational activities. Latino Family Literacy classes are also being
offered throughout the year, too.
The program’s 10-week-long series supports family literacy by focusing on
daily reading routines. It also teaches parents how to use books to help develop
early literacy skills.
Parents are invited to learn about early brain development, as well as how
to read to their children during special “literacy parties” at home. Participating
families can also receive a book for their home library, and one lucky family will
win a basket full of literacy materials.
Local families have an opportunity to participate in monthly Parent and Child
Together activities (PACT). These center on early literacy and math skills.
Parents can even join their children for the first 15 minutes of class and complete
fun projects to help develop literacy and math skills.
The Kindergarten Readiness Program values parent participation. We believe
it is the key to a child’s success.
Ripple Kids Program
We are anticipating another exciting school year at Arroyo
Elementary filled with lots of academic challenges and community
service opportunities.
This year we will continue to emphasize our Ripple Kids
Program that encourages our students to make a difference in the
world through student initiated service projects. Last Spring,
second-grader Ava Kuntz coordinated a school wide Ripple Kids
Maggie Villegas
project to help end world hunger. All students in 1st-5th grades
Principal
helped raise funds to provide enough supplies to make 10,000
meals for kids in need. Our students each spent 30 minutes of their day measuring, packaging and labeling this enormous amount of soy meals. With every
student eagerly lending a hand we were able to accomplish our goal of sending
10,000 meals to an impoverished school on the other side of the world. Students
loved the experience and have committed to doing it again next year.

Success for All…Support for All
Benson Elementary School is a school that is dedicated to its
motto, “Success for All…Support for All.” I am very proud to say
that Benson continues to be a California Distinguished School.
Benson is a high-achieving school that offers a well-balanced,
standards-based curriculum along with a quality visual and
performing arts program. Benson has a reputation of providing a
fun, safe, warm, and welcoming environment, rich with valuable
learning experiences.
Norma Lemus
Principal
Benson is a small neighborhood school with approximately
400 students. We have 65 staff members, including classroom teachers, Special
Day Class team members, office support staff, custodial staff, para-educator staff,
and intervention teachers.
Our parent volunteer group is a gift! In addition to raising money to benefit
our students, parents donate many hours of their time and are always willing
to help when needed. Thanks to our parent volunteer group, our students have
opportunities to participate in visual and performing arts programs, such as
Art Masters, Class Act, and John Yeiser Music.
Everyone at Benson lives up to our motto, “Success for All…Support for All.”
This is evidenced by the warm and caring atmosphere and the high student
achievement that you will find here at Benson Elementary School.

the California state tests (CSTs) in both mathematics and English
language arts (ELA). Overall, the number of Currie students now
scoring proficient or advanced in mathematics increased by 15%.
To complement the math success, the number of students scoring
proficient or advanced in ELA increased by 10%. This academic

increased reading interventions. In
addition, all students attended DEN,

Students Succeed in IB
As the Foothill High School International Baccalaureate (IB)
Diploma Program enters its 12th year, our candidates continue to
experience success. The IB Diploma Class of 2011 deserves our
highest recognition and accolades for completing the rigorous
requirements of the program. Nineteen of our 20 candidates in the
Class of 2011 scored high enough to be awarded the IB diploma.
Candidates must earn a total of at least 24 points on their six
Al Marzilli
examinations to qualify. On average, this year’s candidates earned
Principal
31 points on their examinations; this meets the University of
California (UC) criteria of awarding at least two quarters of college credit. Due to
our high IB exam pass rate of 96.4 percent, in 2010, U.S. News & World Report
ranked our program among the best in the country.
Our 2011 graduates are attending Princeton University, Columbia University,
Vanderbilt University, DePaul University, Claremont McKenna College, Scripps
College, Drexel University, Siena College, University of Southern California,
UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, UC Davis, and UC Irvine. Congratulations to all
of those students and their parents on succeeding to the next stage of their
educational journey!
This year 21 seniors and 38 juniors are enrolled in the IB Diploma Program.

Students Show Outstanding Growth on Test Scores
The Columbus Tustin Bulldogs had an outstanding year during
2010–2011.
It was marked by a number of significant accomplishments.
Our music program played at Knott’s Berry Farm as well as
Disneyland, and it continues to grow. The students in our visual
arts program were recognized at the Orange County Department
of Education’s Imagination Celebration, and by the Tustin Area
Dean Crow
Council of the Fine Arts. And our Academic Pentathlon teams
Principal
earned dozens of individual medals to score well up in the team
standings.
For the third year in a row we were recognized by the Governor’s Council on
Physical Fitness as front runner in their schoolwide physical fitness campaign.
We retained the Second Harvest Food Bank’s perpetual trophy when we collected
more food in their holiday drive than any other middle school in the County. But
most importantly, our students demonstrated continued growth in learning as
measured by the state’s STAR testing program.
We look forward to continuing our 52-year tradition with another great year.
Our team of gifted and dedicated educators returns nearly unchanged. In fact,
the transition from the 2010–2011 school year is the most stable one that we
have enjoyed in a number of years.
And don’t forget, this year we are also welcoming back the Tustin Tiller Days

worth the price of admission, so please come out and enjoy part of what makes

A Special Place for Learning
In just a few short weeks as the new principal of Guin Foss
Elementary School, it is clear to see why it is such a fabulous place
for students to learn. We were recognized in 2010 as a California

2011, and our motto, “Excellence For All!” is certainly manifested
in our staff and students striving to work together to achieve
success every day they come to school.

There is a special feeling at Guin Foss School. Our hardworking
Principal
and dedicated teachers, office support staff, special-education
team members, paraeducators, custodial staff and reading specialists work with
our students in a number of ways to support their educational endeavors. And
our parent volunteer group is continually working to support our students by
raising money, donating hours of service and providing them with a wide variety
of multicultural experiences.
Guin Foss provides a well-balanced curriculum that focuses on the essentials
of reading, writing and math. The curriculum is infused with a strong visual and
performing arts program that is supported by our parent community. The Guin
Foss students are offered the opportunity to participate in a multitude of programs,

The teachers are also ready to grow professionally and learn
how to strengthen the Writing program at Hicks Canyon. The staff’s Professional
Learning Communities (PLC) will focus on helping to improve teacher instruction
and student learning in the area of Writing. Teachers will collaborate throughout
the year by planning, researching and evaluating our writing curriculum. The
Professional Learning Communities will engage in weekly conversations and
discussions on ways to improve student writing.
As teachers grow professionally using the most effective strategies to teach

Hillview Temporarily Moves to Heritage
Quite a few people have asked “What is happening at Hillview?”
The simple answer is that the school location is changing, but the
program will not change.
Our new location is on the most northwest corner of the Tustin
Marine Base. The school backs up to Redhill Avenue.
We are very fortunate to have a brand new school for our
students and staff. Originally this school site was going to open as
Tim O’Donoghue Heritage Elementary School but there were not enough students
Principal
in the attendance area to open it. Eventually when the housing
market picks up, Heritage will become an elementary school and Hillview will be
relocated.
At the previous site tennis courts will be built and upgrades to the athletic
facility will be made as part of the Measure L modernization program that was
approved by the local taxpayers.
We are very excited to be at a new school site and look forward to continuing
to help students out and graduate from high school.

One Degree of Extra Effort: Makes All the Difference
Derek Pinto is pleased to be joining the Ladera Elementary
School community. Mr. Pinto is enthused about serving the
elementary school students and facilitating an opportunity for
them to both excel in their academic work and enjoy their time at
school. He notes that these formative years are critical in fostering
a love of learning, and he is enthused about partnering with a
skilled staff as they work to prepare students for the future.
Derek Pinto
Mr. Pinto’s educational background includes master’s level work
Principal
in educational administration and business. He is currently
working on further studies in educational leadership.
Professionally, Mr. Pinto has served in the field of education in three countries—
Japan, Canada and the United States—and his experience spans K–12 and
college-level work. He has worked as a substitute teacher, a full-time teacher, an
assistant principal and a principal. He has also worked for several multinational
corporations and looks forward to sharing these experiences and leveraging them
for the benefit of the students.
Mr. Pinto has adopted a theme for the school this year as staff partners with
parents and community members to heighten student achievement; the theme
is “One degree of extra effort.” The message is taken from author Sam Parker’s
work, 212°: The extra degree. The premise of the book is simply this: At 211°,
water is hot. At 212°, water boils. With boiling water comes steam, and with
steam, you can power a locomotive—just one extra degree can make all the
difference.
Lambert is Ready to Roll!
Focus and change are two predominant themes at Lambert
this year. We have quite a few new faces throughout our campus.
We had to say good bye to some beloved team members and we
give a warm welcome to our new ones. We are also excited about
the leadership of Dr. Greg Franklin, our new Superintendent.
While change stretches us, our focus will narrow to reach
our goal to be better than ever this year. Our plan is to focus
Deanna Parks
our energy, time and funds on what is most important: student

learning. We use data rather than assumptions to determine what’s
working. Each grade level team is busy analyzing our state test scores to determine what worked well and what could be even better. Each child matters to us
and is part of our gauge as to how well we are meeting the needs of all students.
We are excited and ready for the 2011-12 school year!

A Stellar Year Ahead
A Terrific Year In Store
Myford Elementary School’s mission is “maximizing student
learning and social responsibility with high expectations for all!”
In keeping with our school mission, our focus for the year will be
continuing to increase student achievement and promoting positive
choices and responsibility.
In order to promote increased student learning, we will continue
with our Response to Instruction model for reading instruction.
Amy Fedderly
This program ensures that all students’ needs are met through
Principal
differentiation and the scaffolding of instructional support. With
the help of certificated support personnel, we reduce student-teacher ratios for
those groups of students in need of more academic support.
At Myford, we believe that by offering meaningful professional development to
teachers, we provide them with instructional tools to ensure that student
learning is maximized. This year we have developed a site-based plan that gives
teachers the ability to choose a curricular area to focus on for the year. Focus
areas include Readers Workshop, Writers Workshop, and Cognitively Guided
Instruction for Math. We look forward to a year of great learning ahead.
To increase social responsibility, which is a main component of our school’s
mission, our staff will be participating in Positive Behavioral Interventions and
Support (PBIS) training. This will be a great opportunity, and we know our
students will benefit greatly. We will also be promoting social responsibility by
continuing with our Myford Gives Back campaign, which gives all students a
chance to participate in a charitable event each trimester.
It’s hard to believe that summer is over and our school is once
more filled with the sound of children in the hallways and classrooms.
The 2011?2012 school year brings only a few new faces to
our staff. Dana Crawford comes to Nelson as our new resource
specialist. We are also excited to have Christi Aspling come
to us as our new school psychologist. Both Mrs. Crawford and
Mrs. Aspling are from other TUSD schools.
John Laurich
Our theme this year is titled, “Making Every Student a Star, One
Principal
Child at a Time.” As we move towards this goal we will also pursue
our mission statement of, “We at W. R. Nelson will not rest until all student needs
are met through high expectations, communication and collaboration.”
This marks the fifth year of our Response to Instruction (RtI) “TEAM Time.”
This great program addresses the individual needs of students in the specific area
of literacy. Our first four years have been very successful, and we our looking
forward to another terrific year. With a strong home-school partnership we are
committed to a year of continued academic success.
We invite all of the Nelson community to join us this year and take part in our
many opportunities for involvement. Events like Literacy Night, Math/Science

Creating Habits
As a new school year begins, we are given an opportunity to
reflect on the previous year and enhance programs for the year
ahead. Red Hill Elementary School has implemented the Positive
Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program for the past
four years. The priority of the program is to have students showing
respect, responsibility and building relationships with each other
in and out of the classroom. With the introduction of the program,
Will Neddersen the staff has been reinforcing the positive actions our students
Principal
have shown with our “Caught In the Act” Cards. To continue to
move this program forward, the Red Hill Staff will be introducing Sean Covey’s
“The 7 Habits of Happy Kids” to our student body. The 7 Habits are “Be
Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win,
Seek First to Understand, Then be Understood, Synergize, and Balance”. Each
month one of the habits will be focused on to help each student develop an
understanding of what it means and put it into practice. The goal is to have
students be able to put the habits into their everyday. To instill these habits
would support our students as they move through their academic career with
success as well as make a difference in the community.

Bringing Home Great Practices
Welcome back to Utt Middle School to all of our returning
students and all of our new students! While the summer break is a
time to revitalize and refresh, many of our teachers have taken it
upon themselves to attend professional-development trainings this
summer.
Three teachers attended STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math) training on the campus of Seattle
Tom Giebe
University in July, working through the units of study that they will
Principal
be teaching this coming year to seventh- and eighth-grade students
taking the elective course. We also had teachers and counselors attending AVID
(Advancement via Individual Determination) training in San Diego and locally
here in Orange County, and we also had counselors attending trainings in Seattle.
These teachers and counselors best exemplified Utt’s core values of attitude,
commitment and achievement during their summer training. These core values
are essential to building productive citizens within our community of learners.
Throughout the school year, it is my goal to develop positive relationships with
our parents and students. It is also a priority to work alongside our PTO, teachers
and faculty members to continue building a learning environment that promotes
academic excellence for all students. To accomplish these goals, I will be actively
seeking input and involvement in our students’ education. To once again help me
develop these relationships will be our assistant principal, Christa Glembocki.
The administrative team, counselors, faculty and staff all look forward to
working with our students and parents to continue the tradition of excellence
here at Utt Middle School.
