John Paul II students continue to score significantly higher than average on national basic skills tests. This year, seventh grade students Shannon Ward, Rebecca Springle, Brody Gallagher, Katie Napolitano and eighth grade student Paul Bakey qualified for the Global Talent Search program sponsored by Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. All five students scored in the 95th percentile or higher. How our students ranked nationally on the IOWA standardized test: 100% 90% 80% 70% JPII Percentile Reading 60% 50% 40% JPII Percentile Math 30% 20% National Average 10% 0% Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade 3 4 5 6 7 8 8 Accreditation Accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission of Elementary Schools, is a challenging and lengthy self-assessment through which the school establishes and implements a 5-year improvement plan, and then receives an evaluation and set of recommendations by a professional and impartial team. It is a systematic process that requires a school to ask why it exists, to establish a vision of its future, and to determine specific objectives for reaching that vision. The accreditation process is a collaborative effort, beginning with a vision created by the school’s key stakeholders (including faculty, administration, board members and members of the school community at large) and ending with a written plan which charts goals and measures outcomes. Faculty and staff committed a great deal of time, working above and beyond their regular responsibilities to complete a yearlong self-study in language arts, math and technology. The result is a deliberate strategy for ongoing improvement in these areas. Though not mandatory, our administration and leadership believe that accreditation demonstrates our commitment to excellence and provides a strong endorsement for the value of a John Paul II education. This year’s accomplishment – accreditation for our preschool program and a seven year renewal for kindergarten through eighth grade – is an important opportunity for us to thank our faculty, school families and all of our donors for their confidence in our ability to achieve these goals and to fulfill our mission. 10 Expanded Curriculum Opportunities to Explore Learning happens in many different ways. In addition to a core curriculum of language arts, math, religion, science and social studies, students at John Paul II have an opportunity to explore their interests through elective classes and after school clubs.
