Ensuring consistent quality of cult drink with appropriate calibration
Ensuring consistent quality of cult drink with appropriate calibration Total peace of mind and cost optimization at Coca-Cola HBC The Coca-Cola® company has been expanding its franchising system steadily since the beginning of the 20th century. This system regulates the manufacture, sale and distribution of the refreshing drink within a very specific territory. Coca-Cola HBC Switzerland AG owns three productions sites in Switzerland. In Brüttisellen (close to Zürich), the glass line fills 36,000 of the unmistakable contour bottles (0.2 and 0.33 liter) every hour while the recyclable line for 1.5 liter PET bottles manages 24,000. Modern measuring technology ensures that traditional Coca-Cola® and other soft drinks are made exactly according to the recipe. In the Brüttisellen production site, seven product-relevant measuring devices do their job at the heart of the system. “It must be ensured that the mass flowmeters in the blending system are working 100% correctly. In the syrup room, where the concentrate and the simple syrup are processed, we rely on the total accuracy of calibration. The deviation between the actual devices and the reference device is just 0.03 grams”, stresses Rolf Bieri, Production Manager. In addition to the quality specifications of the ‘Company’, exact dosing means cash. As for all the other measuring devices that are calibrated, it’s not only a matter of complying with the quality specifications - the company is ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18000 certified -, it is also a matter of making economic use of chemicals, for cleaning processes for example. Coca-Cola’s requirements: •Ensure compliance to the standards and to the quality specifications of the ‘Company’ • Ensure the blending system is working 100% correctly • Master the measurement uncertainty One-stop (mobile) shop saves time and money Our contribution The company was clear about one thing from the start: Only one calibration company would be commissioned for the sake of simplicity. “In such a way I need to be put through to one person. I only have to do that once, and not 10 times with 10 different companies.” That’s why Coca-Cola HBC Switzerland AG asked Endress+Hauser if they could also calibrate thirdparty devices. In the end, the determining factor for the contract was the fact that Endress+Hauser can calibrate all devices regardless of manufacturer as well as all measurable variables. Furthermore, the Endress+Hauser technician comes with a one-of-akind mobile calibration unit that includes all the high-tech equipment. “Things are definitely better with Endress+Hauser’s total package, even if it’s ‘only’ for the sake of the travel expenses that I would otherwise have to pay to five or six different companies.” The essential steps of the project 1 Scheduling Endress+Hauser calibration management monitors the calibration appointments and gets in touch in good time to schedule a date. This way, users don’t have to think about anything. 2 Flexible, mobile calibration All the high-tech equipment is installed on a practical car drawn trailer. The mobile calibration unit allows the technician to drive straight to the facility, calibrate the devices and take the equipment with him straight away. 3 Performing calibration Overall, Endress+Hauser calibrates 66 measuring points from a wide variety of manufacturers, some up to four times a year. In addition to the product-relevant mass flowmeters, the measurable variables pressure, temperature, conductivity, pH value, redox potential and chlorine content are also aligned. A long-term agreement The company also saves money by concluding a long-term calibration contract. 4 “The digital devices should always be calibrated by someone with the requisite know-how. And things are working out wonderfully too. Price is important, but we also value the underlying service greatly. Service is almost a higher priority than price. The total package is decisive for us, and Endress+Hauser has got it just right.” Rolf Bieri, Executive producer Coca-Cola Beverages Brütisellen, Switzerland Instruments International Other locations Endress+Hauser Instruments International AG Kägenstrasse 2 4153 Reinach Switzerland Tel. +41 61 715 81 00 Fax +41 61 715 25 00 http://www.endress.com info@ii.endress.com Please visit: www.endress.com/worldwide CS00019H/29/EN/01.12 PF/INDD CS5.5
