Dear members and friends
It is with great pleasure that I
present the Co.As.It. Annual
Report for 2013, an eventful
year for Co.As.It. with major
changes implemented across
the organisation.
In January 2013 The Italian
Bilingual School made the
transition to its new home
at Meadowbank. The site,
known as the Co.As.It. Meadowbank Campus (CMC),
provides students with increased space for their learning
and play. We are sad that some of our students were
not able to join us at our new home in Meadowbank. We
wish these families all the best and encourage students to
maintain their study of Italian in whatever form they can. On
a brighter note, we are pleased that enrolments for 2014
and beyond have increased.
Two major additions will be made to the School in 2014.
Firstly, thanks to a Federal Government grant, the School will
have a new hall and covered outdoor learning area (COLA).
Both will assist the School in managing performances,
sports and will provide shelter during wet weather. The
second addition will be the creation of an innovation centre
at the School. The centre has been funded by a substantial
grant made available through the Mamma Lena and Dino
Gustin Foundation. The Centre, which will be named the
Mamma Lena and Dino Gustin Innovation Centre, will
contain an amateur radio station, audio visual room and
editing equipment and a new high tech library. I take this
opportunity to thank the Foundation for this grant and I
am privileged that IBS will be able to honour the legacy of
Mamma Lena and Dino Gustin.
The Italian National Ball was held on May 17 at Le Montage.
The event celebrates both the birth of the Italian Republic
and the wonderful work of Co.As.It. The Italian National
Ball is our annual flagship event which draws the attention
of local, Italian and business communities. We were
pleased to welcome 450 guests to the event and over
30 sponsors. It is pleasing to showcase Co.As.It. at this
event. In 2013 all fundraising from the event was directed
to the Italian Bilingual School. The event raised $20,000
which was utilised to improve fencing and security at the
School. I take this opportunity to thank the community for
its support.
It is exciting to see our language services and business
development take us into new areas. In 2013 Co.As.It. ran
its first tour to Umbria - the realisation of a long term vision
and many months of work. We have also embarked on a
new educational adventure, delivering online Italian lessons
via a Learning Management System.
I am pleased to acknowledge the hard work of our
community services staff. We assist hundreds of people
every week through aged care and community programs.
The impact our services have on people should not be
underestimated and I thank our staff, particularly those

who provide the direct care, for their ongoing commitment.
It is nothing short of a privilege to serve the vulnerable
members of our community! It is my mission and that of
our Board to maintain the support that we offer our older
community and to lobby Governments to continue to fund
these much needed services.
Many requests have been received asking Co.As.It. to
keep fighting to ensure that the Cultural Centre at the Italian
Forum remains in the hands of the Italian community. The
site has a historical connection and significance for our
community. The land which is now known as the Italian
Forum on Norton Street was gifted to the Italian community
by the State Government back in 1988. The gift was in
recognition of the contribution that Italians have made to
our State. Co.As.It. moved its headquarters from Ashfield
to Leichhardt in 1998 so that we too could be part of the
community in Leichhardt. The Cultural Centre at the Italian
Forum has been experiencing financial difficulty for some
time now. This year the Board of IFL called in voluntary
administrators who have sought proposals from the
market. We firmly believe that the only bid that respects
both the Crown covenant on the land and the connection
to the Italian community is the one put forward by Co.As.
It. Although the Administrators have recommended a
proposal from a private bidder, we have remained strong
with our position. I would like to assure you that Co.As.It. is
doing its best to ensure that that this valuable community
asset stays in the rightful hands of the Italian community.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Frank
Chiment our previous Vice President who resigned from the
Board in October 2013. Frank had been a member of the
Board for 8 years. On behalf of the Board I wish Frank well
in his future endeavours and thank him for his contribution
to Co.As.It. Frank was instrumental in managing the growth
of IBS and in consolidating the structure of the School.
2014 will bring with it many new challenges – increasing
demands for services; significant changes to the aged
care landscape which will change the nature of how we
provide our services and; the need to continue to grow IBS
in its new location. However, 2014 also brings with it many
opportunities and together with my fellow Board members
and management staff I look forward to realising these.
I take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge my fellow
Board members for the constant support and dedication to
the work of Co.As.It.
I acknowledge all of our staff and volunteers for their
hard work and commitment to the organisation. A special
acknowledgement to our General Manager Thomas
Camporeale and to our senior managers, Sara Villella and
Robert Ruggeri.
I commend to you the 2013 Co.As.It. Annual Report and I
look forward to your continued support of the organisation.

Cari soci e amici,
è con immenso piacere che vi presento il Rapporto Annuale
del Co.As.It. per l’anno 2013, un anno ricco di eventi e di
grandi cambiamenti all’interno dell’organizzazione.
Nel gennaio 2013 la Scuola Italiana Bilingue si è spostata
presso la sua nuova casa a Meadowbank. La sede,
conosciuta come Co.As.It. Meadowbank Campus (CMC),
permette agli alunni di avere più spazio a disposizione
per l’apprendimento e per il gioco. Purtroppo alcuni
studenti non hanno potuto seguirci nella nuova sede di
Meadowbank. Auguriamo ogni bene a queste famiglie e
incoraggiamo gli studenti a proseguire lo studio della lingua
italiana in altro modo. Una nota positiva: le iscrizioni per
l’anno 2014 e successivi sono aumentate.
Nel 2014 saranno eseguiti due principali ampliamenti
della scuola. Il primo, grazie al finanziamento del Governo
Federale, è un nuovo atrio e un’area d’apprendimento
esterna al coperto (COLA). Entrambe aiuteranno nella
gestione degli spettacoli, dello sport e forniranno un riparo
dalla pioggia. Il secondo ampliamento, possibile grazie alla
donazione della Fondazione Mamma Lena e Dino Gustin,
è la creazione di un centro d’innovazione presso la scuola.
Il centro, che si chiamerà Mamma Lena and Dino Gustin
Innovation Centre, includerà una stazione radio amatoriale,
una sala con strumenti audiovisivi e di montaggio e una
nuova libreria ad alta tecnologia. Colgo l’occasione per
ringraziare la Fondazione per la donazione ed esprimere il
mio orgoglio per il fatto che l’ IBS potrà onorare l’eredità di
Mamma Lena e Dino Gustin.
Il 17 maggio si è tenuto il Ballo Nazionale Italiano presso Le
Montage. L’evento festeggia sia la nascita della Repubblica
Italiana sia il fantastico lavoro portato avanti dal Co.As.It.
Il Ballo Nazionale Italiano è il nostro evento principale e
attrae l’attenzione della comunità locale, di quella italiana
e del mondo degli affari. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di
dare il benvenuto a 450 ospiti e a oltre 30 sponsor. È
un piacere presentare il Co.As.It. a questo evento. Nel
2013 tutti i proventi sono stati destinati alla Scuola Italiana
Bilingue. L’evento ha raccolto $20,000 utilizzati per il
miglioramento del recinto e della sicurezza della scuola.
Colgo quest’occasione per ringraziare la comunità per il
sostegno mostrato.
È emozionante vedere la sezione dei servizi linguistici e
dello sviluppo d’impresa portarci in nuove aree. Nel 2013
il Co.As.It. ha tenuto il suo primo viaggio in Umbria, la
realizzazione di una visione di lungo periodo e il frutto di
mesi di preparazione. Ci siamo inoltre imbarcati in una
nuova avventura educativa, la fornitura di lezioni di italiano
online attraverso un Learning Management System.
Ho il piacere di ringraziare il personale dell’area dei servizi
sociali per il loro duro lavoro. Ogni settimana assistiamo
centinaia di persone attraverso i programmi di assistenza
sociale e per anziani. Non bisogna sottovalutare l’impatto
che i nostri servizi hanno sulle persone e ringrazio il nostro
personale, in particolare coloro che forniscono assistenza
diretta, per il loro continuo impegno. È un privilegio essere
al servizio dei membri più deboli della nostra comunità! La
mia missione e quella del Consiglio di amministrazione è di
continuare a offrire l’assistenza che agli anziani della nostra
comunità e fare pressione sui Governi per continuare a
finanziare questi servizi cosí necessari.
In molti hanno richiesto l’intervento del Co.As.It. affinchè
il Centro Culturale del Forum Italiano rimanga in mano
alla comunità italiana. Il posto ha un significato storico
e una connessione alla nostra comunità. La terra oggi
conosciuta come Forum Italiano in Norton Street è stata
donata dal Governo Statale alla comunità italiana nel 1988.
Il dono è stato un riconoscimento del contributo degli
italiani al nostro Stato. Nel 1998 il Co.As.It. ha spostato
la propria sede principale da Ashfield a Leichhardt per far
parte della comunità di Leichhardt. Da un po’ di tempo il
Centro Culturale dell’Italian Forum si è trovato in difficoltà
finanziarie. Quest’anno il Consiglio d’Amministrazione
dell’IFL è entrato in amministrazione volontaria e ha cercato
proposte dal mercato. Noi riteniamo che l’unica offerta
che rispetti non solo la condizione imposta sulla terra ma
anche la connessione con la comunità italiana, sia quella
avanzata dal Co.As.It. Sebbene gli Amministratori abbiano
raccomandato una proposta da un offerente privato, siamo
rimasti solidi nella nostra posizione. Vorrei rassicurarvi che
il Co.As.It. sta facendo il massimo per assicurare che
questo importante bene comune rimanga nelle mani della
comunità italiana a cui spetta di diritto.
Vorrei cogliere quest’occasione per ringraziare Frank
Chiment, il nostro Vice Presidente precedente che si è
dimesso dal Consiglio d’Amministrazione nell’Ottobre
2013. Frank ha fatto parte del Consiglio per 8 anni. A
nome del Consiglio faccio i nostri migliori auguri a Frank e
lo ringrazio per il suo contributo al Co.As.It. Frank è stato
cruciale nella crescita dell’IBS e nel consolidare la struttura
della scuola.
Il 2014 presenterà nuove sfide – aumento della richiesta
di servizi; cambiamenti significativi nel panorama
dell’assistenza agli anziani che modificherà la natura di
come forniamo i servizi; l’esigenza di continuare a crescere
l’IBS presso la sua nuova sede. Tuttavia, il 2014 porta
anche molte opportunità e insieme agli altri membri del
Consiglio d’Amministrazione e ai dirigenti sono impaziente
di realizzarle.
Colgo quest’occasione per ringraziare gli altri membri del
Consiglio d’Amministrazione per il loro costante sostegno
e dedizione al lavoro del Co.As.It.
Vorrei ringraziare tutto il personale e i volontari per il duro
lavoro e l’impegno nell’organizzazione. Un ringraziamento
speciale va al nostro Direttore Thomas Camporeale e ai
nostri dirigenti, Sara Villella e Robert Ruggeri.
Vi lascio al Rapporto Annuale 2013 e confido nel vostro
continuo sostegno alla nostra organizzazione.

General Manager’s Message
2013 was indeed another
busy year for Co.As.It. We
experienced many changes,
growth and challenges.
Following my appointment
to the role of General
Manager in December 2012,
I completed my first full year
in the position. Following 12
years of working directly with
our community services I
have enjoyed the experience
of working more broadly across the organisation. 2013 was
indeed a year of learning for me, particularly with relation to
the management of our language services and of the Italian
Bilingual School.
I wish to highlight some of the many achievements of
Co.As.It. during 2013.
The Community services area has continued to provide
much needed support to our community. In 2013,
the community care program was rebranded with the
introduction of the new Home Care Packages Guidelines.
Co.As.It. is now funded to provide Homecare Packages,
251 of which are Level two (low level care) and 5 are Level
four (complex care). The introduction of the changes
to the Aged Care Act has meant a greater shift towards
increased consumer choice. This will now mean that
consumers can choose who, when and how their services
will be delivered. As of 1 July 2015, all Homecare places
will be delivered on a consumer directed basis.
Co.As.It. underwent the quality review under the
Department of Health and Ageing. The review was
conducted over three days and included interviews with a
range of staff, interviews with stakeholders and visits to the
day centres. The review encompassed the packaged care
program and all HACC services. The review team were
satisfied that Co.As.It. met each of the requirements under
the guidelines and commented that the management of
the level 4 packages is exemplary.
In 2013 Co.As.It. re-launched Welcome to Australia. A
program designed to assist young Italians arriving from Italy
in search of opportunity and a better life - much like our
parents and grandparents. ‘Welcome to Australia’ provides
a casework service, information on employment, English
classes, accommodation and other settlement related
matters. Through our Youth Worker we have continued our
networking events in the form of ‘aperitivo’ nights which aim
to help young Italians develop links with our local youth.
This program is a testament to our ongoing commitment
to our mission.
In a critical year for the study of languages, Co.As.It.
continued to promote Italian language and culture through
a range of innovative programs. The Language Services
area provided Italian instruction to over 6000 students
in State and Catholic primary schools, 550 students in
Out of School Hour centres and 500 students in evening
classes. A new Learning Management System (LMS)
was implemented in 2013 to expand the number of
Italian language programs throughout NSW. The platform
has enabled Co.As.It. to move to a blended learning
model of instruction and successful pilot programs run
in 2013 received the support of a number of educational
authorities. Our students continue to excel and in 2013
several students were recognised for their outstanding
achievements in the 2013 Minister’s Awards for Excellence
in Student Achievement. Co.As.It. also received official
recognition for over 30 years’ contribution to the promotion
of Italian language and Culture in NSW. In addition, the
Language services team developed a new language tour
to the region of Umbria which saw a number of students
experience a specialised program of Italian language and
culture in a local setting.
In 2013 the Italian Bilingual School relocated to its
permanent home at Meadowbank. The official opening
was celebrated on the 31st of May and the new site was
officially opened by the then Minister for Education, Peter
Garrett. The opening of the new site was an emotional
day for Co.As.It. and the IBS community as it was the
realisation of years of hard work and struggle to locate a
permanent home for the School. Since the relocation, the
Italian Bilingual School has continued to grow.
I take this opportunity to thank all Co.As.It. staff for their
continued contribution to the organization and to our
community. Our staff are indeed our greatest asset and
I am privileged to lead such a wonderful group of people.
I must particularly mention the Management team - Sara
Villella and Robert Ruggeri for their leadership and support.
I also would like to thank the middle management team Maria Angelatos, Laura Angelone and Anita Bonanno.
I thank the Board of Directors for their constant guidance,
support and for the trust they have placed in me. The Board
of Directors provide the vision that drives the organisation
and work tirelessly to ensure that it is delivered.
The 2013 Annual Report will provide you an insight into the
achievements of the organisation in 2013.

Il 2013 si è stato un altro anno impegnativo per il Co.As.It.
Abbiamo assistito a cambiamenti, crescita e prove difficili.
In seguito alla mia nomina a Direttore Generale nel dicembre
2012, ho completato il mio primo anno in questa carica.
Dopo 12 anni passati a lavorare direttamente nei servizi
sociali, ho avuto il piacere di impegnarmi più ampiamente
all’interno di tutta l’organizzazione. Il 2013 è stato quindi un
anno in cui ho imparato molto, in particolare in relazione
alla gestione dei nostri servizi linguistici e della Scuola
Italiana Bilingue.
Vorrei ricordare alcuni dei risultati principali raggiunti dal
Co.As.It. nel 2013.
L’area dei servizi sociali ha continuato a fornire alla nostra
comunità la necessaria assistenza. Nel 2013 il programma
di assistenza comunitaria è stato rinominato in seguito all’
introduzione delle nuove Home Care Packages Guidelines.
Il Co.As.It. viene ora finanziato per la fornitura di Pacchetti
di Assistenza Domiciliare, 251 dei quali di Livello due
(assistenza di basso livello) e 5 dei quali di Livello quattro
(assistenza complessa). L’introduzione degli emendamenti
alla Legge sull’ assistenza agli anziani ha comportato un
cambiamento verso una maggiore scelta da parte dei
consumatori. Ciò significa che adesso i clienti possono
decidere chi fornirà loro i servizi, quando e come. Dal
1 luglio 2015 tutti i pacchetti di assistenza domiciliare
saranno forniti in base alle direzioni dei clienti.
Il Co.As.It. è stato sottoposto a una revisione della qualità da
parte del Ministero della salute e dell’anzianità. La revisione
è stata condotta in tre giorni e ha compreso colloqui con
il personale, con le parti interessate e visite ai centri di
assistenza diurni. La revisione ha riguardato il programma
dei pacchetti si assistenza e tutti i servizi HACC. Il gruppo di
revisori si è dichiarato soddisfatto del Co.As.It., che rispetta
tutti i requisiti dettati dalle linee guida e ha dichiarato che la
gestione dei pacchetti di Livello quattro è esemplare.
Nel 2013 il Co.As.It. ha rilanciato il programma Welcome
to Australia, ideato per assistere i giovani in arrivo dall’Italia
in cerca di opportunità e di una vita migliore, proprio come
i nostri genitori e i nostri nonni. ‘Welcome to Australia’
fornisce servizi di assistenza individuale, informazioni su
occupazione, lezioni di inglese, alloggio e altre questioni
relative allo stabilirsi in Australia. Attraverso il nostro
operatore sociale per i giovani e le famiglie sono continuati
gli eventi sociali come le ‘aperitivo’ nights che hanno lo
scopo di incrementare le relazioni tra i giovani italiani e
locali. Questo programma è una testimonianza del nostro
continuo impegno nella nostra missione.

di apprendimento e istruzione misto e i programmi pilota
di successo del 2013 hanno ricevuto l’appoggio di varie
autorità competenti. I nostri studenti continuano a eccellere
e nel 2013 molti di loro hanno ottenuto riconoscimenti nel
Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Student Achievement.
Il Co.As.It. ha ricevuto un riconoscimento ufficiale per oltre
30 anni al servizio della promozione della lingua e cultura
italiana nel NSW. Inoltre, il personale dei servizi linguistici
ha sviluppato un nuovo viaggio nella regione Umbria, al
quale hanno partecipato diversi studenti che hanno avuto
la possibilità di sperimentare un programma specializzato
di lingua e cultura italiana presso il contesto locale.
Nel 2013 la Scuola Italiana Bilingue si è spostata presso
la sua sede permanente a Meadowbank. L’apertura
ufficiale è stata celebrata il 31 maggio e la sede è stata
ufficialmente aperta dall’allora Ministro dell’istruzione, Peter
Garrett. L’apertura della nuova sede è stata una giornata
commovente per il Co.As.It. e la comunità dell’IBS,
essendo la realizzazione di anni di duro lavoro e difficoltà
per trovare una sede permanente per la scuola. Sin dal suo
spostamento, la scuola ha continuato a crescere.
Colgo quest’occasione per ringraziare il personale del
Co.As.It. per il loro continuo contributo all’organizzazione
e alla comunità. Il nostro personale è veramente il nostro
bene più prezioso e mi sento privilegiato di essere alla
guida di un gruppo di persone fantastiche.
In particolare devo ricordare i dirigenti - Sara Villella e Robert
Ruggeri per la loro direzione e il loro sostegno. Vorrei inoltre
ringraziare i dirigenti intermedi - Maria Angelatos, Laura
Angelone e Anita Bonanno.
Ringrazio il Cosiglio d’Amministrazione per il loro costante
consiglio, la loro assistenza e la fiducia in me riposta. Il Consiglio
d’Amministrazione crea la visione che spinge l’organizzazione
e lavora instancabilmente perché essa si compia.
Il Rapporto Annuale del 2013 vi fornirà un quadro dei
risultati raggiunti dall’organizzazione nel 2013.

In un anno critico per lo studio delle lingue, il Co.As.It.
ha continuato a promuovere la lingua e cultura italiana
attraverso una serie di programmi innovativi. L’area dei
servizi linguistici ha fornito istruzione di italiano a più di
6000 alunni nelle scuole primarie statali e cattoliche,
550 studenti nei centri doposcuola e 500 studenti delle
classi serali. Nel 2013 è stato messo a punto un nuovo
Learning Management System (LMS) per espandere il
numero di programmi di lingua nel NSW. La piattaforma
COMMUNITY SERVICES
The ‘Living Longer, Living Better’ Policy, launched in April
2012, continued to drive systemic and policy changes for the
community care sector. These latest reforms were mandated
by amendments to the Aged Care Act 1997 in order to provide
a legislative framework for the implementation of the ‘Living
Longer, Living Better’ Policy. On 28 June 2013, five Bills forming
the ‘Living Longer, Living Better’ package of bills were passed
into law. The Aged Care Act sets out the terms and conditions
that services providers must comply with when delivering aged
care services in Australia. The Act promotes quality care to
consumers whilst also ensuring that the personal, civil and
legal rights of consumers are protected.These amendments
to the Aged Care Act have resulted in an aged care system
that offers greater consumer choice. On 1 July 2013, the
Government launched the ‘My Aged Care’ website and phone
line to assist older Australians and their carers to obtain upto-date information on healthy ageing and aged care services
available within their local area. This means that consumers
are now able to “shop” around and select their desired service
provider.
Community Services
The My Aged Care website and phone line was
created in preparation for the implementation of
Home Care Packages (HCP) to be delivered within
a Consumer Directed Care (CDC) framework.
The CDC approach allows consumers and their
carers to have greater control over their own
lives by allowing them to make choices about
the types of care and services they access and
the delivery of those services, including who will
deliver the services and when. On 1 August 2013,
the Government released the new HCP guidelines
and as a result all new allocations of HCPs will be
delivered under the CDC model. All existing HCPs
will be rolled out under the CDC model in 2015.
The release of the new HCP guidelines resulted in
a rebranding of Co.As.It.’s Community Aged Care
Packages (CACP) program and the Extended
Aged Care at Home (EACH) Program. These
programs were amalgamated into one program
called Home Care Packages (HCP) with levels
ranging from 1 to 4. These Packages continue to
provide planned and coordinated services to assist
frail older persons to continue living independently
in their own homes. Level 1 and 2 HCPs cater for
consumers with “low level” care needs whilst Level
3 and 4 HCPs continue to provide; care services,
equipment, nursing and allied health services to
consumers with “high level” care needs.
In 2013 the Centre Based Daycare (CBDC)
program and Bilingual Aged Project Officer positions
underwent the Quality Review process together
with the CACP and EACH programs. The Quality
Review took place across 3 days in March 2013
and included visits to Co.As.It.’s CBDC Centres,
over the phone interviews with consumers, audits
of all files and documents, and interviews with all
levels of Co.As.It. staff. The purpose of the Quality
Review is to ensure that Co.As.It. is compliant with
governing legislation and standards and to assess
the overall quality of Co.As.It.’s programs.
It was determined that Co.As.It. met all of the
Community Care Common Standards and
Expected Outcomes and no required improvements
were identified by the Quality Review Team. The
Review Team stated that the Co.As.It. EACH
program was “exemplary” and confirmed that
staff in the CBDC Program are sympathetic to the
cultural and linguistic needs of consumers. This
was identified as a unique feature of the Co.As.
It. CBDC program. The positive feedback received

from the Quality Review Team is a credit to all staff
at Co.As.It. who work tirelessly to deliver a quality
service to the community.
In December 2012 the Federal Government
launched the “National Ageing and Aged Care
Strategy for people from Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse Backgrounds”. Co.As.It. continued to
support this strategy by taking an active role in
implementing this Government policy. Co.As.It.’s
Community Care and CBDC programs continued
to provide culturally appropriate services and the
Aged Care Service Improvement and Healthy
Ageing Grant program continued to ensure that
mainstream providers were providing culturally
appropriate care. Co.As.It.’s commitment to this
strategy was further strengthened in 2013, by
continuing to hold positions on various committees
and peak bodies such as chairing the CALD
Packaged Care Forum, COTA and PICAC NSW.
Co.As.It. also continued to represent FECCA on
the national CDC Implementation and Evaluation
Committees.
Another significant change in 2013, was the
creation of the Department of Social Services.
This change was a direct result of the change of
Government in September 2013 and replaces the
former Department of Health and Ageing.
There were many program highlights in 2013 and
these have been reported in the three Community
Services Teams: Community Care, Centre
Based Daycare and Counselling and Community
Development.
COMMUNITY CARE
The most significant highlight for the Community
Care Team was the rebranding of its Packaged
Care programs following the amended Aged Care
Act and the introduction of the new Home Care
Packages Guidelines. Co.As.It. is now funded to
provide 251 Level 2 Home Care Packages and 5
Level 4 Home Care Packages. Co.As.It.’s waiting
list for these programs have continued to grow as
consumers now enjoy greater choice regarding
who will deliver their care.
This change in legislation has also seen an
increased demand for brokerage services through
the Co.As.It. Home Help Program. These reforms
mean that consumers waiting on Co.As.It. waiting
lists can, in the interim, be referred to other agencies
and request that an agency broker Co.As.It. staff
for the provision of direct care services. The Home
Help team successfully completed tenders to
become the preferred provider for another two
large Sydney wide agencies with the delivery of a
total of 23,575.30 planned service hours in 2013.
The Community Care Team has continued to
address workforce issues to build its capacity
to respond to changes resulting from the Aged
Care Reform. In 2013, Co.As.It. employed 16
new Bi-lingual Community Care workers and a
Community Care Administration Assistant. Co.As.
It.’s commitment to deliver quality services to
the community has also resulted in another 19
Community Care Workers (CCW) starting their
Certificate III in Aged Care. Co.As.It. was able to
obtain funding from the Australian Government
to deliver this course together with Bridgeworks
Employment and Training. This means that
currently, 81% of the community care team have
either completed or are currently completing this
qualification.
CENTRE BASED DAYCARE
A key feature of the ‘Living Longer Living Better’
policy is the focus on CDC and Active Ageing. In
2013, Co.As.It. was successful in securing funding
for an Active Ageing Daycare group for the Inner
West. The group will focus on healthy ageing and
activities will be directed by consumers. Activities
can include trips to museums, art galleries, and
physical activities such as bush walks. This is a
significant shift from the current Daycare model
where activities are conducted in a centralised
venue. This group will commence in 2014.
In keeping with the “National Ageing and Aged
Care Strategy for people from Culturally and
Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds”, Co.As.It.
continued to provide Italian Specific CBDC and
two Multicultural Frail Aged Daycare groups in the
Sutherland Shire. The Multicultural groups were
appraised as part of the Quality Review process
and the feedback received was that consumers
are extremely happy with the service they are
receiving. This is a testament to the quality service
Co.As.It. staff provides not only in an Italian specific
setting but also in the multicultural arena.
Following on from the Quality Review process
Co.As.It. decided to audit the venues currently used
Community Services
by CBDC. This audit was of greatest importance for
the Inner West Dementia Specific Group to ensure
that venue could adequately cater for this special
needs group. A “Working Party” was established
comprising of council staff, an Occupational
Therapist and the Inner West Dementia Advisor.
The Working Party conducted a site audit and
made a series of recommendations to ensure the
safety of consumers who attend the group. These
recommendations were then implemented. Co.As.
It. also moved the Beacon Hill Centre Based Frail
Aged Daycare group to a newly refurbished facility
in Narraweena.
Another Quality Improvement for the CBDC program
was the creation of the Daycare Assessment Officer
position. The role of the Daycare Assessment
officer is to conduct assessments and reviews
of consumers. In keeping with the Aged Care
Reforms, the Daycare Assessment Officer will
adopt the enabling approach when conducting
assessments and encourage independence
by including consumers in the decision making
process.
During the year, staff worked rigorously to continue
to fill vacancies in the CBDC Program. In 2013,
the total number of clients in the CBDC Program
increased by 8.3%. Filling vacancies has not only
been beneficial to clients but has provided much
needed respite to carers.
COUNSELLING AND COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT
The Aged Project Officers (APO) also embraced
the Aged Care Reforms by adopting the Active
Ageing philosophy. The APOs were fundamental
in co-facilitating a Dementia café in Ashfield
and following from the success of this café, a
partnership was formed with Leichhardt City
Council and another dementia café was created
in the Leichhardt Local Government area. The
purpose of these dementia cafés is to ensure
that people with a diagnosis of dementia remain
active in their local community. The APOs have
also continued to promote the importance of
Active Ageing by providing information sessions on
various aged care topics including the availability
of services and the importance of accessing these
services in a timely manner rather than waiting until
crisis point.
The Aged Care Service Improvement and Healthy
Ageing Grant (ACSIHAG) program, adopted the
Aged Care reforms by supporting the “National
Ageing and Aged Care Strategy for people from
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds”.
This was achieved by providing information sessions
and delivering eight cultural briefings to service
providers and residential aged care facilities. New
partnerships with mainstream services were also
forged. The ACSIHAG program also supported the
provision of culturally appropriate care through the
creation of a new website www.coasitagedcare.
org.au, which went live late 2013. The website has
been developed to assist aged care services to
provide a culturally and linguistically appropriate
service to older Italians in their care. The ACSIHAG
program continued to disseminate information to
the Italian community via fortnightly articles in ‘La
Fiamma’ on aged care services and consumer
rights and also delivered information sessions on
‘Caring for the Carer’ and ‘Palliative Care’.
In 2013, the Community Visitor’s Scheme
(CVS) celebrated its 20th anniversary. A gala
luncheon was held on 6 December 2013 at The
Mediterranean House. The event was attended by
Co.As.It volunteers and a number of distinguished
guests, including Senator The Hon. Concetta
Fierravanti-Wells, Parliamentary Secretary to the
Minister of Social Services. Four volunteers were
presented with certificates for 20 years of service
in recognition of their contribution to the CVS
program since its inception in 1993.
Co.As.It. was also advised in late 2013, that it was
successful in gaining additional funding towards
Community Services
the growth of CVS and visits in the community.
This funding was made available as a result of the
aged care reforms. The Companionship Program
continues to provide volunteer visits to people in
the community who are socially isolated.
The Gambling Help Program continued to offer
a fortnightly radio Rete Italia on the L’angolo
dell’esperto/‘Experts Corner’ segment where
gambling issues and other mental health issues
are discussed. Information sessions have also
been delivered to the community regarding
gambling issues and access to services. In 2013,
Co.As.It. started a Women’s Recovery Support
Group which has been successful in empowering
people affected by problem gambling. Co.As.
It. also received confirmation that The Office of
Liquor, Gaming and Racing would continue to fund
The Gambling Help Program for an additional four
years. This demonstrates the need for a therapeutic
based service for people with gambling issues from
Culturally and Linguistically Divers Backgrounds
and their families.
The Mental Health Program continued to provide a
therapeutic counselling service to the community.
In the last reporting period, the team recorded
1,234 counselling sessions within 12 months. The
main issues within the community include; anxiety,
depression, and carer stress with a continual
request for support and intervention in the areas of
early stage of dementia and palliative care. Co.As.
It. delivered a group therapy session in partnership
with Multicultural Health Service, Northern Sydney
Local Health District with sessions on ‘Transitions
in Life Project’. This session was delivered to the
Italian community with a focus on grief and loss.
The Mental Health Month NSW campaign took
place in October. Two sessions were organised
with the theme of ‘Kindness – little acts, big
impacts!’. Information sessions were delivered
on wellbeing and self compassion followed by an
interactive session on laughter therapy. Both the
Drug and Alcohol Program and Gambling Help
Program participated in this event with the scope
of engaging with the community and promoting
their services.
The Drug and Alcohol (D&A) service continued
to respond to the needs of the community
by focusing on projects that de-stigmatised
addictions to alcohol or drug related matters. Many
people in the community do not believe that they
have an addiction or problem and those that do
often find it difficult to talk about. During 2013, the
D&A Officer noted an increase in people wanting
to discuss issues pertaining to drugs and alcohol
during community events and activities. These
informal counselling sessions have proven to
be a successful means of engaging with people
seeking assistance.
Community engagement was also embraced by
the Youth and Family Worker and the following
community activities were offered in 2013; mask
making at Norton Street Festa, Pizza day at the
Italian Bilingual School, and ‘ Aperitivo’ & ‘Movie
Night’ for older youth. The program also continued
to engage the community via the ‘Spazio Giovani’
radio segment on Rete Italia. In 2013, Co.As.
It. commenced the ‘Pagina Giovane’ a monthly
youth page in ‘La Fiamma’ where young people
have an opportunity to write articles sharing their
experiences. The Youth and Family Worker also
embarked on capacity building projects such
as the delivery of workshops on CV writing and
Leadership and Role Modelling.
The demand for the services offered by the Welcome
to Australia (WTA) program continued to grow
throughout 2013, with the program responding to
an average of 58 enquiries per month. The program
also delivered monthly information seminars with
regard to settlement, accommodation, employment
and visa enquires to newly arrived Italian migrants.
This self-funded program continues to fulfil a service
gap and provides much needed support to this
emerging community.
Community Services
La politica ‘Living Longer. Living Better’ (Vivere
più a lungo, vivere meglio) lanciata nel 2012 ha
continuato ad apportare cambiamenti strutturali
e regolamentari al settore dell’assistenza agli
anziani. Le ultime riforme sono state imposte dagli
emendamenti alla Legge sull’assistenza agli anziani
1997 per creare la struttura legislativa necessaria
all’implementazione della politica “‘Living Longer.
Living Better’. Il 28 giugno 2013 sono stati approvati
i cinque progetti di legge che costituiscono il
pacchetto “Vivere più a lungo, vivere meglio”. La
Legge sull’assistenza agli anziani stabilisce i termini
e le condizioni che gli enti erogatori di servizi agli
anziani devono rispettare. La legge promuove la
fornitura di servizi di qualità e allo stesso tempo
assicura il rispetto dei diritti personali, civili e legali
dei clienti.
Questi emendamenti alla Legge sull’assistenza
agli anziani sono risultati in un sistema che offre
maggiore scelta al consumatore. Il 1 luglio 2013
il Governo ha lanciato ‘My Aged Care’ (La mia
assistenza all’anziano), un sito web e una linea
telefonica per aiutare gli anziani e chi si occupa
di loro a ottenere informazioni aggiornate sui
servizi disponibili nella loro zona. Ciò significa che i
consumatori possono guardarsi intorno e scegliere
l’ente erogatore di servizi che desiderano usare.
La linea telefonica e il sito web ‘My Aged Care’ sono
stati creati in preparazione dell’implementazione
della Consumer Directed Care (CDC), assistenza
diretta dal consumatore nella fornitura dei pacchetti
di assistenza a domicilio. L’approccio CDC
permette ai consumatori e a chi si occupa di loro di
avere il controllo della propria situazione dandogli
la possibilità di scegliere il tipo di assistenza e di
servizi che riceveranno, chi li fornirà e quando. Il 1
agosto 2013 il Governo ha lanciato le nuove linee
guida HCP per i pacchetti di assistenza a domicilio
e di conseguenza tutti i nuovi pacchetti verranno
allocati secondo il modello CDC. Tutti i pacchetti
già esistenti passeranno al modello CDC nel 2015.
Il lancio delle nuove linee guida HCP è risultato nel
cambiamento del titolo dei programmi di assistenza
domiciliari del Co.As.It. I Community Aged Care
Packages (CACP) e l’Extended Aged Care at
Home (EACH) Program sono stati amalgamati in un
programma unico chiamato Home Care Packages
(HCP) (Pacchetti di assistenza a domicilio) con
livelli da 1 a 4. Questi pacchetti continuano a
fornire servizi programmati e coordinati per aiutare
gli anziani a vivere in modo indipendente nelle
proprie case. I pacchetti di livello 1 e 2 si occupano
dei soggetti che richiedono un basso livello di
assistenza, mentre i pacchetti di livello 3 e 4
offrono assistenza di alto livello tra cui attrezzatura,
assistenza infermieristica e sanitaria.
Nel 2013 il Centre Based Daycare (CBDC) (centri
di assistenza diurni) e il programma di Assistenza
Sociale agli Anziani bilingue sono stati sottoposti
a un processo di Quality Review (revisione della
qualità) insieme ai programmi CACP e EACH. La
Quality Review è avvenuta durante tre giornate nel
marzo 2013 e ha incluso visite ai centri del CBDC,
colloqui telefonici con i clienti, revisione di tutti
i file e dei documenti, e colloqui con tutti i livelli
del personale del Co.As.It. Lo scopo della Quality
Review è assicurare che il Co.As.It. rispetti la
legislazione in materia e valutare la qualità generale
dei programme del Co.As.It.
È risultato che il Co.As.It. rispetta tutti i Community
Care Common Standards e Expected Outcomes
e il Quality Review Team non ha richiesto alcun
miglioramento. È stato inoltre dichiarato che il
programma EACH del Co.As.It. è “esemplare” ed
è stato confermato che il personale del programma
CBDC è molto rispettoso delle esigenze
linguistiche e culturali dei partecipanti. Questa è
stata identificata come una caratteristica unica del
programma CBDC del Co.As.It. I commenti positivi
ricevuti dal Quality Review Team sono un tributo al
Servizi Sociali
personale del Co.As.It. che lavora instancabilmente
per fornire servizi di qualità alla comunità.
Nel dicembre 2012 il Geverno Federale ha lanciato
la “National Ageing and Aged Care Strategy for
people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse
Backgrounds” (strategia nazionale sull’assistenza
agli anziani di origine linguistica e culturale diversa).
Il Co.As.It. ha continuato a sostenere questa
strategia implementando la politica in modo
proattivo. Il programma di assistenza agli anziani
e il programma CBDC continuano a fornire servizi
culturalmente appropriati. L’Aged Care Service
Improvement and Healthy Ageing Grant program
(programma miglioramento dei servizi d’assistenza
agli anziani) hanno continuato a permettere che i
principali erogatori di servizi possano fornire servizi
culturalmente appropriati. L’impegno del Co.As.It.
nella strategia si è ulteriormente rafforzato nel 2013
con la partecipazione in varie commissioni ed enti
di spicco come la presidenza del CALD Packaged
Care Forum, COTA e PICAC NSW. Il Co.As.It. ha
inoltre continuato a rappresentare FECCA nelle CDC
Implementation and Evaluation Committees nazionali.
Un altro evento significativo del 2013 è stata la
creazione del Ministero dei Servizi Sociali, che ha
rimpiazzato il precedente Ministero della salute e
dell’anzianità ed è diretta conseguenza del cambio
di Governo nel settembre 2013.
Nel 2013 ci sono stati molti momenti salienti per
i diversi programmi dei Servizi Sociali del Co.As.
It.: Assistenza Sociale, Centri di assistenza diurni,
Counselling e Sviluppo Sociale.
ASSISTENZA SOCIALE
L’evento più importante per il personale della
sezione assistenza sociale è stato il cambiamento
del titolo dei pacchetti in seguito alla riforma della
Legge sull’assistenza all’anziano e all’introduzione
delle nuove Home Care Packages Guidelines. Il
Co.As.It. attualmente riceve finanziamenti per 251
pacchetti di livello 2 e 5 pacchetti di Level 4. La
lista d’attesa per questi programmi continua a
estendersi anche grazie al fatto che i consumatori
possono adesso scegliere chi fornirà loro i servizi.
Questo cambiamento legislativo ha inoltre visto un
incremento della domanda di servizi di assistenza
domiciliare a pagamento. La riforma significa che
i soggetti in lista d’attesa possono nel frattempo
usufruire dei servizi attraverso altre agenzie che
richiederanno di usare il personale del Co.As.
It. per la fornitura diretta del servizio. Il personale
dei servizi a pagamento è inoltre riuscito a divenire
il principale erogatore di servizi per due grandi
agenzie presenti in tutta Sydney e ha fornito
23,575.30 ore di assistenza nel 2013.
Il personale del settore assistenza sociale ha
continuato a impegnarsi per incrementare la forza
lavoro per rispondere all’incremento di richieste
risultante dalla riforma alla Legge sull’assistenza
agli anziani. Nel 2013, il Co.As.It. ha assunto 16
nuovi operatori sociali bilingue e un’assistente
amministrativo. L’impegno del Co.As.It. nella
fornitura di un servizio di qualità ha inoltre portato
altri 19 operatori sociali a iniziare il Certificate III in
Aged Care (Certificato III in assistenza agli anziani).
Il Co.As.It. ha ottenuto finanziamenti governativi per
l’erogazione di questo corso in collaborazione con
Bridgeworks Employment and Training. Il risultato è
che oggi l’81% del personale del settore assistenza
sociale ha completato o sta frequentando questo
corso.
CENTRI DI ASSISTENZA DIURNI
Una caratteristica particolare della riforma ‘Living
Longer Living Better’ è il focus sulla CDC e
sull’Active Ageing (maturare attivamente). Nel
2013, il Co.As.It. ha ottenuto finanziamenti per un
Active Ageing Daycare group per la zona dell’Inner
Servizi Sociali
West. Il gruppo si concentrerà sulla salute degli
anziani e le attività saranno scelte dai partecipanti.
Le attività possono comprendere gite a musei,
gallerie d’arte, e attività fisiche come passeggiate
all’aria aperta. Questo è un notevole cambiamento
rispetto al modello attuale di centri di assistenza
diurni, dove le attività sono condotte presso una
località specifica. Il nuovo gruppo verrà avviato nel
2014.
Nel rispetto della “National Ageing and Aged Care
Strategy for people from Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse Backgrounds”, il Co.AsIt. ha continuato
a fornire due CBDC specifici in italiano e due
Multicultural Frail Aged Daycare nella zona del
Sutherland Shire. I gruppi multiculturali sono stati
elogiati nell’ambito del processo di Quality Review
e dai commenti è risultato che i partecipanti sono
estremamente soddisfatti del servizio ricevuto.
Questo è un tributo alla qualità dei servizi erogati
dal personale del Co.As.It. non solo in un contesto
specificatamente italiano ma anche in un contesto
multiculturale.
In seguito al processo di Quality Review il Co.As.
It. ha deciso di esaminare le strutture attualmente
utilizzate per i gruppi dei CBDC. Questa revisione è
stata particolarmente importante nel caso dell’Inner
West Dementia Specific Group per assicurare che i
locali potessero soddisfare le particolari esigenze di
questo gruppo. È stato creato un “Working Party”,
formato dal personale del comune, un terapista
occupazionale e l’Inner West Dementia Advisor. Il
Working Party ha condotto un esame dei locali e ha
fatto una serie di raccomandazioni per garantire la
sicurezza dei partecipanti al gruppo. Il Co.As.It. ha
implementato i cambiamenti e ha inoltre spostato
il Beacon Hill Centre Based Frail Aged Daycare
group presso dei locali recentemente ristrutturati a
Narraweena.
Un altro miglioramento del programma CBDC è stata
la creazione della posizione Daycare Assessment
Officer (Responsabile della valutazione per i centri
di assistenza). Il ruolo di questa posizione è di
condurre valutazioni e revisioni dei consumatori.
Nel rispetto della riforma del settore assistenza agli
anziani, il Daycare Assessment Officer condurrà
le valutazioni adottando l’approccio abilitativo
e incoraggerà l’indipendenza dei partecipanti
coinvolgendoli nelle decisioni che li riguardano.
Durante l’anno, il personale ha lavorato
instancabilmente per continuare a riempire i posti
disponibili del programma CBDC. Nel 2013, il numero
totale dei clienti del programma CBDC è aumentato
dell’8.3%. La partecipazione al programma non solo
ha benefici sui clienti, ma concede anche un po’ di
tregua a chi si occupa di loro.
COUNSELLING E SVILUPPO SOCIALE
Anche gli Assistenti Sociali per Anziani (APO)
hanno accolto la riforma dell’assistenza agli anziani
adottando la filosofia dell’Active Ageing. Gli APO
sono stati fondamentali nel co-facilitare il Dementia
café di Ashfield e in seguito al suo successo un
altro dementia café è stato creato a Leichhardt
in collaborazione con il Leichhardt City Council.
Lo scopo di questi dementia café è permettere
alle persone affette da demenza di continuare
a rimanere attivi nella comunità locale. Gli APO
hanno inoltre continuato a promuovere l’importanza
dell’Active Ageing attraverso sessioni informative
su vari argomenti riguardanti la terza età, come i
servizi disponibili e l’importanza di accedervi al più
presto anziché arrivare a una situazione critica.
Il programma miglioramento dei servizi d’assistenza
all’anziano (ACSIHAG) ha adottato la riforma
all’assistenza agli anziani sostenendo la “National
Ageing and Aged Care Strategy for people from
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds”.
Ciò è stato ottenuto attraverso sessioni informative
e briefing culturali ad altri enti erogatori di servizi
e strutture residenziali per anziani. Sono state
inoltre forgiate nuove collaborazioni con altri
fornitori di servizi. Il programma ACSIHAG ha
inoltre sostenuto la fornitura di servizi culturalmente
appropriati attraverso la creazione di un nuovo sito
web www.coasitagedcare.org.au, lanciato alla
fine del 2013. Il sito è stato creato allo scopo di
assistere enti di assistenza agli anziani a fornire
servizi linguisticamente e culturalmente appropriati
ai loro clienti italiani. Il programma ACSIHAG ha
inoltre continuato a diffondere informazioni sui
servizi agli anziani e sui diritti dei consumatori nella
comunità italiana attraverso articoli quindicinali ne
‘La Fiamma’ e ha tenuto sessioni informative su
‘Caring for the Carer’ and ‘Palliative Care’.
Nel 2013, il programma visitatori comunitari
(CVS) ha celebrato il suo ventesimo anniversario.
Il 6 dicembre 2013 si è tenuto un pranzo di gala
presso la Mediterranean House. Hanno partecipato
all’evento i volontari del Co.As.It. e alcuni ospiti
illustri tra cui il Senatore Onorevole Concetta
Fierravanti-Wells, Segretario Parlamentare al
Servizi Sociali
particolare attenzione ai temi del lutto e del dolore.
Ministero dei Servizi Sociali. Quattro volontari
hanno ricevuto un certificato per 20 anni di servizio
in riconoscimento del loro contributo al programma
sin dal suo concepimento nel 1993.
Il Co.As.It. ha inoltre appreso alla fine del 2013
di aver ottenuto finanziamenti aggiuntivi per
l’espansione del programma visitatori comunitari. I
finanziamenti sono stati resi disponibili in seguito
alla riforma dell’assistenza agli anziani. Il programma
di compagnia continua a fornire visite agli anziani
della nostra comunità che sono socialmente isolati.
Il programma per il problema del gioco d’azzardo
ha continuato a tenere una sezione quindicinale su
radio Rete Italia nella rubrica L’angolo dell’esperto/
‘Experts Corner’ in cui vengono discussi problemi
legati al gioco d’azzardo e problemi di igiene
mentale. Sono state inoltre tenute delle sessioni
informative sul problema del gioco d’azzardo e sui
servizi disponibili. Nel 2013 il Co.As.It. ha avviato
Women’s Recovery Support Group (gruppo di
supporto per le donne) che ha ottenuto il risultato
di sostenere le persone con il problema del gioco
d’azzardo. Il Co.As.It. ha inoltre ricevuto conferma
del fatto che l’Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
continuerà a finanziare questo programma per
altri quattro anni. Ciò dimostra l’esigenza di servizi
terapeutici per persone di diversa origine linguistica
e culturale con problemi di gioco d’azzardo e per
le loro famiglie.
Il programma della salute mentale ha continuato
a fornire servizio di counselling terapeutico alla
comunità. Nel corso di 2 mesi sono state registrate
1,234 sessioni di counselling. I problemi principali
riscontrati nella nostra comunità sono ansia,
depressione e lo stress di occuparsi di qualcuno.
Inoltre, continuiamo a ricevere richieste di aiuto e
intervento nelle aree di demenza iniziale e cure
palliative. In collaborazione con Multicultural Health
Service, Northern Sydney Local Health District
il Co.As.It. ha tenuto una sessione di terapia
di gruppo ‘Transitions in Life Project’ (Progetto
transizione nella vita) per la comunità italiana con

salute mentale del NSW. Sono state organizzate
due sessioni sul tema ‘Kindness – little acts,
big impacts!’ (Piccoli gesti di gentilezza possono
avere un grande impatto). Sono state inoltre
tenute sessioni informative sul benessere e sulla
comprensione di sé stessi seguite da sessioni
interattive di terapia della risata. Sia il programma
per le droghe e per l’alcol sia il programma aiuto
per il gioco d’azzardo hanno partecipato all’evento
allo scopo di farsi conoscere dalla comunità e
promuovere i propri servizi.
Il programma per le droghe e l’alcol ha continuato
ad intervenire nella comunità concentrandosi su
progetti allo scopo di de-stigmatizzare le questioni
relative all’uso di droga e alcol. Molti soggetti nella
comunità infatti ritengono di non avere un problema
o la dipendenza e di conseguenza hanno difficoltà
a parlarne. Nel 2013, l’operatore sociale per le
droghe e l’alcol ha notato un aumento del numero
di persone interessate a discutere questioni relative
a droga e alcol in occasione di eventi e attività.
Queste sessioni di counselling informale hanno
riscosso notevole successo nel coinvolgere le
persone in cerca di assistenza.
Anche l’assistente sociale per i giovani e le
famiglie ha coinvolto la comunità in vari eventi
durante il 2013: creazione di maschere alla
Norton Street Festa, Pizza day alla Scuola Italiana
Bilingue, ‘ Aperitivo’ & ‘Movie Night’ per i giovani.
Il programma ha inoltre continuato a raggiungere
la comunità attraverso la rubrica ‘Spazio Giovanni’
su radio Rete Italia e nel 2013, il Co.As.It. ha dato
il via alla ‘Pagina Giovane’ una pagina mensile
su ‘La Fiamma’ dove i giovani hanno la possibilità
di scrivere un articolo condividendo le proprie
esperienze. L’assistente sociale per i giovani e
le famiglie si è inoltre imbarcato in progetti per
lo sviluppo delle potenzialità come seminari sulla
stesura di CV, Leadership e Modelli di riferimento.
La domanda per i servizi offerti dal programma
Welcome to Australia (WTA) sono cresciuti durante
tutto il 2013, rispondendo in media a 58 richieste
mensili. Il programma ha inoltre tenuto sessioni
mensili per i giovani italiani appena arrivati sul tema
dello stabilirsi in Australia, alloggio, lavoro e visti. Il
programma, autofinanziato, continua a riempire un
vuoto nella disponibilità di servizi sul tema e offre
sostegno a questa comunità emergente.
LANGUAGE SERVICES
In 2013, Co.As.It. continued to promote Italian language and
culture in NSW by teaching Italian through a range of innovative
language programs, which cater for both children and adults,
to over 6000 students in State and Catholic primary schools,
550 students in Out of School Hour centres and 500 students
in evening classes. The Language Services area continued to
support Italian teachers in NSW through a dedicated program
of professional learning and development activities and via the
Italian Multimedia Resource Centre which provides access to
a multitude of teaching and learning resources to support the
delivery of Italian to over 23,000 students studying Italian in
NSW schools.
2013 was a critical year for the study of languages in general, with
the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority
(ACARA) working on the development of a national curriculum
for languages and the NSW Board of Studies undertaking a
major review into the provision of language education in the
State. The NSW Education Act 1990 mandates the curriculum
outcomes for primary school education in six Key Learning
Areas (KLAs). ‘Languages’ is not a KLA but may be included
as part of the Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) KLA
or during the 20% of primary school curriculum time available
for additional activities. The study of Languages is therefore not
compulsory in years K to 6 but between 30% and 40% of NSW
primary schools have a language program. Through the support
of Co.As.It., Italian continues to be one of the most commonly
taught languages in NSW government primary schools.

With the Commonwealth move to an Australian
curriculum, a review of language provision in NSW
was long overdue. Throughout 2013 the NSW
Board of Studies consulted with key language
education stakeholders in NSW and conducted
an extensive analysis of best practice in Australia
and internationally. As a result of the review, the
Board developed six proposals with the objective
of offering broader and more inclusive language
education for all students. These include developing
a new K–10 Languages curriculum framework;
a new approach to post-compulsory languages
education; a Languages Proficiency Framework
to enable language achievement to be assessed;
targeted support materials for the Aboriginal
Languages K–10 Syllabus; the establishment of a
NSW Languages Advisory Panel to report to the
Minister for Education through the Schools Advisory
Council and advocating to the Commonwealth for
funding that ensures the sustainability of languages
education in NSW.
In 2013 ACARA continued developing the
Australian Curriculum: Languages and conducted
extensive consultation with stakeholders. The
Australian Curriculum: Languages is premised on
the objective that all students will learn languages
across the Foundation (Kindergarten) to Year 8
span and recommends an indicative 350 hours
of language instruction from Foundation to Year 6.
The NSW Board of Studies has yet to determine
the timeline for implementation of the Australian
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR
TEACHERS
With over 40 years’ experience in delivering quality
language programs, Co.As.It. has developed
extensive expertise in training language teachers.
Each year the Professional Learning Program (PLP)
for teachers is created in collaboration with the
Italian language Consultant at the Department of
Education and Communities. In 2013, the program
included professional learning seminars run by
qualified practitioners, Italian language courses
designed to maintain language competency,
full immersion courses run by visiting Professors
from Italian universities, access to an online
Italian professional learning community, access
to CELI and DILS exams, the Italian Certification
programs run by The University of Perugia, as well
as membership to the Italian Multimedia Resource
Centre.
Training highlights of the year include the Corso
d’aggiornamento: Analisi e creazione di materiale
didattico per diversi livelli di competenza linguistica,
a three-day professional development course
run in September by visiting Professor Nicoletta
Santeusanio from the University for Foreigners
of Perugia. The course focussed on analysing
and creating teaching and learning materials for
students of varying linguistic competence and
provided participants with an opportunity to engage
in both theoretical and practical activities.
A number of training sessions were also run
for teachers on the implementation of a new
Learning Management System (LMS) for blended
learning and on developing effective strategies
for engaging adult learners. The biennial AFMLTA
(Australian Federation of Modern Language
Teachers Association) Conference was held in
July with seminars on the Australian Languages
Curriculum, Bilingualism, CLIL (Content and
Language Services
Language Integrated Learning), Flipping the
classroom, Differentiating the curriculum in
language classrooms and SOLO (Structure of
Observed Learning Outcome) taxonomy.
The Language Services team participated in the
Catholic Schools Networking Event for language
teachers at the Southern Cross Catholic Vocational
College and attended consultation meetings on
the Review of Languages Education in NSW run
by the Board of Studies NSW.
Co.As.It. also presented at the Symposium
on “Italian in mainstream Australian Education”
organised by the Italian Embassy in Adelaide.
Speakers included Professor Joe Lo Bianco from
The University of Melbourne, Professor Angela
Scarino from The University of SA, Professor Nina
Rubino from The University of Sydney and Dr.
Phil Lambert and Ms Suzanne Bradshaw from
ACARA. The Symposium provided an opportunity
to showcase Co.As.It.’s work in the promotion of
Italian language and culture.
PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
INSERTION PROGRAM
Co.As.It. is a longstanding and respected
educational partner of the Italian Consulate, the
Department of Education and Communities,
the Catholic Education Office of Sydney and
Parramatta Diocese and in 2013 continued its
commitment to the provision of quality programs
by teaching Italian through the Insertion Program
to over 6,000 students in NSW State and Catholic
primary schools. The Program has undergone a
number of changes in recent years to remain
viable in the future and to ensure both quality and
longevity, crucial elements for language teaching
and learning.
As the result of a strategic restructuring of the
funding model, in which schools employ teachers
directly or contribute higher levies per student, the
Insertion Program continues to provide language
classes in NSW schools. In 2013, ten State
schools participated in the Insertion Program as
Contribution schools and ran K-6 Programs (1.5
hours K-2 and 2 hours 3-6) by directly employing
Italian teachers. Seventeen Catholic schools
continued to participate in the Insertion Program by
contributing a higher levy. The commitment from all
stakeholders has ensured that Co.As.It. continues
to teach Italian to 6400 students in 27 primary
schools across Sydney.
A number of schools in the Insertion program
received official visits from the Italian Consulate
and the Catholic Education Office in 2013. In May,
the Educational Attaché of the Italian Consulate
General, Cristina Mignatti, visited two Insertion
schools, St. Brendan’s, Annandale and St. Joan
of Arc, Haberfield to meet with teachers, talk to
children, observe lessons and discuss programs.
She provided positive feedback on the quality of
the Insertion Program, commenting on the high
level of student engagement in learning Italian and
the strong commitment of Co.As.It. teachers in
delivering effective teaching programs with both
linguistic and cultural elements.
In November, Mary Karras, Education Officer and
Paul Cahill, Head of Curriculum at Sydney’s Catholic
Education Office, visited Insertion classes at St.
Brendan’s, Annandale, to observe online lessons
being delivered through our Learning Management
System (LMS). A blended model of teaching
Italian with classroom teachers and students
accessing additional resources and participating
in virtual lessons was successfully piloted at Holy
Spirit, North Ryde and St. Brendan’s, Annandale.
The Catholic Education Office provided positive
feedback on the innovative use of technology to
support the Insertion Program and commended
Co.As.It. in its efforts to deliver quality programs.
OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS PROGRAM
The Out of School Hours Program (OSH) is one
of Co.As.It.’s longest running programs, having
provided thousands of primary and secondary
age children with the opportunity to study Italian
after school for over 45 years. In 2013, Co.As.It.
was officially recognised for its outstanding work
in language education, receiving a Certificate of
Commendation for over 30 years contribution to
the promotion of Italian language and Culture in
NSW. Co.As.It. was presented with the Certificate
by the Hon. Marie Ficarra, on behalf of the Premier
of NSW, at the annual dinner of the New South
Wales Federation of Community Languages
Schools.
In 2013, over 500 students enrolled in the OSH
Program across 15 centres in Sydney. In addition
to learning the language, students participated

in cultural activities including performances and
literary competitions. Several OSH students were
recognised for their outstanding achievements
in the 2013 Minister’s Awards for Excellence in
Student Achievement in Community Languages
Schools. A year 9 student from Co.As.It.’s OSH
Centre at St. John’s Park received a Commendation
Award and 14 students across other centres were
awarded Merit Certificates. The Minister’s Awards
were presented at an official ceremony at the
University of New South Wales on 30 September.
The HSC Awards night was also organised by
Co.As.It. in collaboration with the Department of
Education and Communities and The University of
Sydney on 4 September, with awards given to the
top 5 HSC students in Continuers, Extension and
Beginners. The Italian Consul General and the new
Director of The Italian Institute of Culture attended
the event.
The Italian Consul General attended Co.As.It.’s
Italian Awards night on November 20 to award
certificates and prizes to students from our various
programs, including the Out of School Hours
program, Minister Awards, CELI exam certificates
and Certificates for Co.As.It.’s literary and artistic
competition. Over 100 people attended the event
including parents, students and teachers.
OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS PROGRAM
(OOSH)
In 2013, the Language Services team managed
the OOSH Program at Casa d’Italia for Italian
Bilingual School students. The service was
extensively reviewed, resulting in a new program
of activities, including structured indoor activities
to complement learning in Italian and provide
opportunity for students to complete school work.
OOSH staff participated in training for First Aid
and Safe Food Handling and significant work was
done on a Quality Improvement Plan for the OOSH
service.
STORY TIME PER BAMBINI PROGRAM
The Story time per Bambini Program has grown
into a highly successful service for parents seeking
to extend their child’s language development from
an early age. The program is designed to nurture
language development in early childhood and is
run by qualified teachers who use a participative
methodology to engage children in bilingual
Language Services
sessions filled with stories, songs, games, and art
and craft activities.
Building upon the success of the Story time per
Bambini Program delivered through the Italian
Multimedia Resource Centre, in late 2013 Co.As.
It. began to build educational alliances with child
care providers to deliver a travelling version of the
Story time per Bambini Program. Co.As.It.’s Story
time teachers ran bilingual sessions at Tennyson
Preschool Kindergarten, Stepping Stones and
Leichhardt Children’s Centre.
The Story time per Bambini Program continued to
grow in 2013 with parents and children enjoying a
successful “day at school experience” in November
at the Italian Bilingual School where they were
participated in learning activities with children in
Preps and Kindergarten.
PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS
ITALIAN CLASSES
Co.As.It.’s Italian Adult course Program expanded in
2013 to offer evening classes at our Meadowbank
campus. Ranked as one of Sydney’s best Italian
language courses, the program is based on the
internationally-recognised Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages and
combines lessons, self-access materials and
a tutoring service to ensure participants have all
the necessary tools to develop the four skills of
listening, speaking, reading and writing. New
learning materials designed to improve listening and
speaking skills were developed and incorporated
in the Program in 2013.
Italian conversation classes were also trialled in the
Program using virtual classroom software through
our Learning Management system. Positive
feedback was received from students regarding
the content and structure of lessons. The online
conversation classes proved to be a useful
component of the Program to provide additional
opportunities to improve listening and speaking
skills.
In 2013, a successful partnership with Cathay
Pacific Airways was forged to promote the study
of Italian to a wider audience. The airline provided
flights to Italy to promote our adult classes,
generating interest in learning Italian and travelling
to Italy. The winner of the Competition to win two
flights to Italy with Cathay Pacific Airways was drawn
at a special Italian cultural event in which over a
100 students participated. The Language Services
team organised an end of year Italian night for all
adult class students. The event was a success
with students participating in an Italian trivia activity
and role-plays throughout the evening.
CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
Since becoming an official CELI (Certificazione
Lingua Italiana) Exam Centre in 2010, Co.As.It. has
continued to deliver quality preparatory courses for
all learners of Italian wishing to sit official exams.
Issued by the Università per Stranieri di Perugia and
recognised by the Italian Department of Education
and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, CELI is
one of the most widely recognised certificates
in the world. In 2013, Co.As.It. ran three exam
sessions in May, June and November. CELI 3 is
the entry level required for foreigners wishing to
study in Italian universities. A number of adult class
students completed preparatory courses to sit the
CELI exams and were successful in attaining CELI
certification.
LANGUAGE TOURS TO ITALY
In 2013, Co.As.It. consolidated its partnership with
Exchange Me to run Language tours to Italy. The
objective of Co.As.It.’s Language Tour Program
is to provide participants with a full-immersion
experience in a local family setting which focuses
on the best that a particular region of Italy has
to offer. “All Roads lead to Rome” was the first
tour developed by Co.As.It. to fully immerse
participants in the local life of the Lazio region. The
tour incorporated flights, Italian lessons, homestay
accommodation, cooking demonstrations, winetasting and tours to Rome. The program combined
language lessons and cultural activities, providing
participants with an opportunity to live with an Italian
family and experience life as a resident rather than
as a tourist. In 2013, Co.As.It. developed a second
language tour in collaboration with Exchange Me to
the region of Umbria. The new tour was launched
at a special cultural evening on 19 August with over
100 people attending the event. The tour included
accommodation in an agriturismo, Italian lessons, a
wine-tasting tour, olive harvesting, cooking lessons
and day trips to various Umbrian towns. A group
of students from the Italian adult class program
Language Services
went on this inaugural tour of Umbria from October
3 to19. It proved to be a success from both a
linguistic and cultural perspective with participants
gaining insight into daily life in Umbria.
ITALIAN FOR HEALTH AND AGED CARE
SECTORS
After the successful implementation of Co.As.
It.’s Language Training Program for Aged care
professionals in 2012, Scalabrini Villages signed
on to do further training in 2013. The program
involved Co.As.It. initially delivering training to
educators in each village. 50 Scalabrini staff
members completed the first 30 hour module in
Basic Italian for Aged Care professionals, which
included cultural awareness seminars, sectorspecific learning materials and Italian language
lessons. The training program not only allowed staff
to learn basic Italian to improve communication
but also provided them with insights into providing
culturally appropriate care for Italian residents.
WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA – ENGLISH
PROGRAMS
As part of Co.As.It.’s Welcome to Australia
Program which supports young Italians arriving
from Italy, the Language Services team developed
a series of specific English classes and workshops
designed to assist Italians in practical situations.
The high demand for classes highlights a real need
in the new emerging Italian community and English
conversational classes to meet their needs were
offered from February.
English courses for two groups of students from
the Provincia di Pordenone were also run between
26 August and 4 September. Both students and
their teachers provided positive feedback about
lessons held at Co.As.It. English courses were
also conducted for a group of students brought
out from Italy by our language tour partner,
Exchange Me. The high schools students stayed
with homestay families in Sydney and attended
daily English lessons at Co.As.It.
ITALIAN FAMILY HISTORY GROUP
The Italian Family History Group (IFHG) operates
under the auspices of Co.As.It. to provide the
community with a unique opportunity for members
to research, record and celebrate their Italian
heritage. In 2013, IFHG meetings were held at
the Italian Forum Cultural Centre and continued to
attract members for an excellent line up of guest
speakers including;
• Art Phillips, musician and composer of music
for television and film;
• Julie Fitzsimons and Fabian Lo Schiavo;
• Mark Tedeschi, Crown Prosecutor and author
of the book Eugenia;
• Nicola Cerrone - International Jewellery
Designer
• Len Destro, who spoke of Dr. Thomas Fiaschi an enterprising practitioner and vineyard owner
of Tizzana Winery.
• Andrew Giunta, son-in-law of the IFHG
Founding Chairman, Dominic Arrivolo, who
spoke about the digitising of the microfiche
reels containing ancestral data;
• Dr. Gianfranco Cresciani who talked about his
book Trieste Goes to Australia;
• Sergio Martes, Sydney’s Italian Consul General
who spoke of the different countries he has
served in;
• Tony di Marti, who migrated to Australia at
the age of 16 and went on to become one
of Australia’s leading Italian entertainers and
singers.
In 2013, Domenic Arrivolo resigned as Chairman
of the IFHG and was awarded a Certificate of
commendation for his outstanding contribution
to the group in the period 1999-2013. He will
continue as a member on the IFHG Committee.
The newly elected Executive Committee members
are: Art Phillips (President /Chairman), Anthony
Ravesi (Vice President / Vice Chair), Roberto
Giunta (Vice President / Vice Chair assist), Sue
Lopes (Secretary) and Maria Linders (Treasurer);
together with Committee members: Dominic

Re, Josie Valli and Francesca Rullo. The Executive
and Committee look forward to working together
to continue to develop, promote and assist those
interested in tracing and recording details of their
Italian ancestors and heritage.

Nel 2013, il Co.As.It. ha continuato a promuovere

l’italiano a oltre 6000 studenti delle scuole

Il 2013 è stato un anno critico per lo studio
delle lingue in generale. L’Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) ha
lavorato allo sviluppo di un programma nazionale
per le lingue e il NSW Board of Studies ha intrapreso
una revisione globale dell’insegnamento delle lingue
nello Stato. La legge NSW Education Act 1990

I momenti salienti della formazione sono stati il
Corso d’aggiornamento: Analisi e creazione di
materiale didattico per diversi livelli di competenza
linguistica, un corso d’aggiornamento di tre giorni
tenutosi a settembre dalla Professoressa Nicoletta
Santeusanio dell’Università per Stranieri di Perugia.
Il corso si è concentrato sull’analisi e creazione di
materiale per l’insegnamento e l’apprendimento
per studenti di diverso livello di competenza e ha
dato ai partecipanti la possibilità di impegnarsi sia
in attività teoriche sia pratiche.
Sono inoltre state tenute un certo numero di sessioni
di formazione per insegnanti sull’implementazione
di un nuovo Learning Management System (LMS)
per l’apprendimento in modalita blended e sullo
sviluppo di strategie efficaci per l’apprendimento
negli adulti. Si è tenuta a luglio la Conferenza
biennale dell’AFMLTA (Australian Federation of
Modern Language Teachers Association) con
seminari sull’Australian Languages Curriculum,
bilinguismo, CLIL (Apprendimento integrato di lingua
e contenuti), capovolgere l’aula, la differenziazione
delle lingue nelle classi e tassonomia SOLO
(Structure of Observed Learning Outcome).
Il personale dei Servizi Linguistici ha partecipato
al Catholic Schools Networking Event per gli
insegnanti di lingua al Southern Cross Catholic
Vocational College e ha partecipato a riunioni di
consultazione sulla revisione dell’insegnamento
delle lingue organizzate dal Board of Studies NSW.
Il Co.As.It. ha inoltre organizzato un simposio
su “l’italiano nel contesto educativo australiano”
organizzato dall’Ambasciata Italiana ad Adelaide.
Hanno tenuto discorsi il Professor Joe Lo Bianco
dell’University of Melbourne, la Professoressa Angela
Scarino dell’University of SA, la Professoressa Nina
Rubino dell’University of Sydney, il Dr. Phil Lambert
e la Sig.ra Suzanne Bradshaw dell’ACARA. Il
simposio è stato un’ occasione per il Co.As.It. di
mostrare il proprio impegno nella promozione della
lingua e cultura italiana.
PROGRAMMI PER BAMBINI
IL PROGRAMMA DEI CORSI INTEGRATI
Il Co.As.It. collabora da tempo con il Consolato
d’Italia, il Department of Education and
Communities, il Catholic Education Office of
Sydney and Parramatta Diocesee e nel 2013 ha
continuato a impegnarsi nella fornitura di programmi
di qualità insegnando italiano nel programma dei
corsi Integrati a oltre 6,000 studenti nello Stato del
NSW nelle scuole statali e cattoliche. Negli ultimi
anni il programma ha subito vari cambiamenti
in modo da assicurare la sua fattibilità in futuro
nonché la sua qualità e longevità, elementi cruciali
per l’insegnamento e l’apprendimento della lingua.
Come risultato di una ristrutturazione strategica
del modello di finanziamento, secondo il quale le
scuole assumono gli insegnanti direttamente o
versano un contributo maggiore per studente, il
programma dei corsi integrati continua a insegnare
italiano nelle scuole del NSW. Nel 2013, dieci
scuole pubbliche hanno partecipato al Programma
dei Corsi Integrati secondo il modello contributivo
e hanno aderito ai Programmi da K all’anno 6 (1.5
ore da K all’anno 2 e 2 ore dall’anno 3 all’anno 6)
assumendo direttamente le insegnanti d’italiano.
Diciassette scuole cattoliche hanno partecipato al
Programma dei Corsi Integrati versando contributi
maggiori. L’impegno da parte di tutti gli interessati
ha permesso al Co.As.It. di continuare a insegnare
l’italiano a 6400 studenti in 27 scuole primarie in
tutta Sydney.
Nel 2013 un certo numero di scuole parte
del Programma dei Corsi Integrati ha ricevuto
delle visite ufficiali da parte del Console Italiano
e del Catholic Education Office. A Maggio, il
Responsabile Scolastico del Consolato Generale
d’Italia Cristina Mignatti, ha visitato due scuole, la
St. Brendan’s di Annandale la St. Joan of Arc di
Haberfield per incontrare le insegnanti, parlare agli
alunni, osservare le lezioni e discutere i programmi.
I suoi commenti sulla qualità del Programma dei
Servizi Linguistici
Corsi Integrati sono stati positivi, in particolare in
riferimento all’impegno degli studenti nell’imparare
l’italiano e delle insegnanti del Co.As.It. nell’offrire
programmi d’insegnamento efficaci con elementi
sia linguistici sia culturali.
A novembre, Mary Karras, Responsabile Istruzione
e Paul Cahill, Responsabile dei Programmi presso il
Sydney’s Catholic Education Office, hanno visitato
le classi dei corsi Integrati della St. Brendan’s di
Annandale, per osservare le lezioni online del
nostro Learning Management System (LMS). La
Holy Spirit di North Ryde e la St. Brendan’s di
Annandale hanno avuto successo nel provare un
modello misto che combina insegnanti in classe
e accesso per studenti a risorse supplementari
e lezioni virtuali. Il Catholic Education Office ha
commentato positivamente l’uso innovativo della
tecnologia nel Programma dei Corsi Integrati e
ha complimentato il Co.As.It. per il suo impegno
nell’erogazione di programmi di qualità.
IL PROGRAMMA DOPOSCUOLA (OSH)
Il Programma Doposcuola (OSH) è uno dei
programmi di più lunga durata del Co.As.
It. che ha dato a migliaia di studenti di scuola
primaria e secondaria la possibilità di imparare
l’italiano per oltre 45 anni. Nel 2013, il Co.As.
It. ha ricevuto un riconoscimento ufficiale per il
suo eccellente impegno nell’insegnamento della
lingua, un Certificate of Commendation per 30
anni di contributo nella promozione della lingua e
cultura italiana nel NSW. Il Co.As.It. ha ricevuto il
Certificato dall’On. Marie Ficarra, in rappresentanza
del Premier del NSW, durante la cena annuale
della New South Wales Federation of Community
Languages Schools.
Nel 2013, oltre 500 studenti si sono iscritti al
Programma OSH in 15 centri di Sydney.
Oltre a imparare l’italiano, gli studenti hanno
partecipato a varie attività culturali come recite e
competizioni letterarie. Vari studenti OSH hanno
ottenuto riconoscimento per i loro eccellenti
risultati nel 2013 Minister’s Awards for Excellence
in Student Achievement in Community Languages
Schools. Uno studente dell’anno 9 del Centro OSH
di St. John’s Park ha ricevuto un Commendation
Award e 14 alunni di altri centri hanno ricevuto Merit
Certificates. I Minister’s Awards sono stati conferiti
durante una cerimonia ufficiale il 30 settembre
presso la University of New South Wales.
Il 4 settembre il Co.As.It. ha organizzato una serata
HSC Awards in collaborazione con il Department
of Education and Communities e la University of
Sydney, durante la quale sono stati conferiti premi
ai primi 5 studenti HSC nelle categorie Continuers,
Extension e Beginners. Hanno partecipato
all’evento il Console Generale d’Italia e il nuovo
Direttore dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
Il 20 novembre il Console Generale d’Italia ha
inoltre partecipato alla serata Italian Awards del
Co.As.It. per premiare gli studenti dei nostri vari
programmi, tra cui il programma Dopo Scuola,
Minister Awards, i certificati dell’esame CELI e i
certificati del Co.As.It. nelle competizioni letterarie
e artistiche. Più di 100 persone hanno partecipato
alla serata, tra genitori, studenti e insegnanti.
IL PROGRAMMA DOPOSCUOLA (OOSH)
Dal 2013, il personale dei Servizi Linguistici ha
gestito il Programma OOSH di Casa d’Italia per gli
alunni della Scuola Italiana Bilingue. Il servizio è stato
profondamente revisionato risultando in un nuovo
programma che comprende attività strutturate
in aula per complementare l’apprendimento
dell’italiano e dare agli studenti la possibilità di
completare i compiti. Il personale dell’OOSH ha
partecipato a un corso di primo soccorso, di igiene
alimentare e ha portato avanti molto lavoro per il
Quality Improvement Plan del servizio.
IL PROGRAMMA STORY TIME PER
BAMBINI
Il Programma Story time per Bambini è divenuto
un programma di grande successo tra i genitori
desiderosi di sviluppare la lingua italiana nei loro
figli sin da una tenera età. Il programma ha lo scopo
di coltivare lo sviluppo della lingua sin dall’infanzia
ed è gestito da insegnanti qualificate che usano
un metodo partecipativo per coinvolgere i bambini
nelle sessioni bilingue fatte di storie, canzoni, giochi
e attività artistiche.
Dopo il successo del Programma Story time per
Bambini presso l’Italian Multimedia Resource
Centre, verso la fine del 2013 il Co.As.It. ha
cominciato a forgiare delle collaborazioni con asili
nido per l’erogazione di una versione itinerante del
Programma Story time per Bambini. Le insegnanti
di Story time del Co.As.It. hanno tenuto sessioni
Servizi Linguistici
bilingue presso il Tennyson Preschool Kindergarten,
lo Stepping Stones e il Leichhardt Children’s
Centre.
Il Programma Story time per Bambini ha continuato
a crescere nel 2013 e genitori e bambini hanno
fatto una “day at school experience” a novembre
presso la Scuola Italiana Bilingue dove hanno
partecipato con successo ad attività educative con
i bambini del Preps e Kindergarten.
PROGRAMMI PER ADULTI
LEZIONI D’ITALIANO
Il Programma Lezioni d’Italiano per Adulti del Co.As.
It. si è espanso nel 2013 offrendo corsi serali
anche presso il nostro campus di Meadowbank. Il
programma, ritenuto uno dei migliori corsi d’italiano
presenti a Sydney, si basa sul quadro comune
europeo di riferimento per le lingue riconosciuto a
livello internazionale e combina lezioni, materiale
didattico online e servizio di tutoring in modo da
assicurare ai partecipanti gli strumenti necessari per
sviluppare le quattro capacità di ascoltare, parlare,
leggere e scrivere. Nel 2013 sono state sviluppate
e incorporate nel programma nuove risorse per
l’apprendimento ideate per migliorare le capacità di
ascolto e linguaggio.
Nel programma sono state inoltre testate lezioni di
conversazione che utilizzano un software di classi
virtuali parte del nostro Learning Management
System. Gli studenti hanno fatto commenti positivi
sulla struttura e il contenuto delle lezioni. Le lezioni
di conversazione online sono state una parte
integrante del Programma che ha fornito ulteriori
occasioni di miglioramento delle capacità di ascolto
e linguaggio.
Nel 2013, è stata stretta un’alleanza con la Cathay
Pacific Airways per promuovere lo studio dell’italiano
a un pubblico più vasto. La compagnia ha fornito voli
per l’Italia per promuovere i nostri corsi, generando
interesse nell’apprendimento dell’italiano e nel
viaggiare in Italia. Il vincitore della competizione
ha vinto due voli per l’Italia con Cathay Pacific
Airways ed è stato sorteggiato durante un evento
culturale d’italiano al quale hanno partecipato circa
100 studenti. Il personale dei Servizi Linguistici
ha organizzato una serata di fine anno per tutti gli
studenti adulti, un evento di successo durante il
quale gli studenti hanno partecipato ad attività
come quiz in italiano e role-play.
IL PROGRAMMA DI CERTIFICAZIONE
DELLA LINGUA
Dal 2010 il Co.As.It. è un Centro Ufficiale Esame
CELI (Certificazione Lingua Italiana) e continua a
impartire corsi preparatori di qualità e a organizzare
esami per gli studenti di italiano che desiderano
sottoporsi all’esame ufficiale. Emesso dall’Università
per Stranieri di Perugia e riconosciuto dal Ministero
dell’Istruzione e dal Ministero degli Esteri italiani,
il CELI è tra gli attestati più riconosciuti a livello
mondiale. Nel 2013, il Co.As.It. ha tenuto tre
sessioni d’esame a maggio, giugno e novembre. Il
CELI 3 è il livello minimo di accesso alle Università
italiane per studenti stranieri. Alcuni studenti
delle lezioni per adulti hanno completato i corsi
preparatori per partecipare all’esame CELI e hanno
ottenuto la certificazione.
LE VACANZE STUDIO IN ITALIA
Nel 2013 il Co.As.It. ha consolidato la sua alleanza
con Exchange Me per organizzare vacanze studio
in Italia. L’obiettivo delle vacanze studio del Co.As.
It. è permettere ai partecipanti di immergersi
completamente nella vita di una famiglia del posto
e si concentra sul meglio che una particolare
regione d’Italia ha da offrire. “Tutte le strade portano
a Roma” è stata la prima vacanza organizzata
dal Co.As.It. per far immergere i partecipanti
nella vita della regione Lazio. Il viaggio ha incluso
volo, lezioni di italiano, alloggio presso famiglie,
dimostrazioni di cucina, assaggio vini e visite a
Roma. Il programma ha combinato lezioni di lingua
e attività culturali, dando ai partecipanti la possibilità
di alloggiare con una famiglia italiana, vivendo la
vita di un residente e non di un turista. Nel 2013,
Servizi Linguistici
il Co.As.It. ha organizzato un’altra vacanza studio
in collaborazione con Exchange Me nella regione
Umbria. La nuova vacanza è stata lanciata il 19
agosto durante un’occasione culturale speciale
alla quale hanno partecipato oltre 100 persone. Il
viaggio ha incluso alloggio presso un agriturismo,
lezioni d’italiano, una gita con assaggio di vini,
raccolta delle olive, lezioni di cucina e gite presso
varie città umbre. Dal 3 al 19 ottobre un gruppo
di studenti delle lezioni per adulti ha partecipato a
questo viaggio inaugurale della regione Umbria. È
stato un successo sia dal punto di vista linguistico
che culturale e i partecipanti hanno avuto la
possibilità di sperimentare la vita quotidiana umbra.
L’ITALIANO PER I SETTORI SANITARIO E
DELL’ASSISTENZA AGLI ANZIANI
Dopo il successo del programma di Italiano per
gli operatori dell’assistenza agli anziani del 2012,
Scalabrini Villages ha continuato a richiedere altri
programmi nel 2013. Il programma ha previsto
che il Co.As.It. inizialmente facesse formazione
ad educatori in ciascun villaggio. 50 membri del
personale hanno completato le prime 30 ore del
modulo di italiano principianti per professionisti
dell’assistenza agli anziani, che comprende
seminari di conoscenza della cultura, materiale di
apprendimento specifico per questo settore e lezioni
di italiano. Il programma non solo ha permesso ai
partecipanti di imparare italiano base e migliorare
la comunicazione, ma ha anche permesso loro di
conoscere meglio la cultura e fornire così assistenza
appropriate ai residenti italiani.
WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA – PROGRAMMI
D’INGLESE
Come parte del programma Welcome to Australia, che
aiuta i giovani italiani in arrivo in Australia, il personale
dei Servizi Linguistici ha sviluppato una serie di lezioni
di inglese e seminari specifici per assistere gli italiani in
situazioni pratiche. La forte richiesta di lezioni sottolinea le
esigenze specifiche di questa nuova comunità di italiani e
da febbraio sono state impartite lezioni di conversazione
in inglese per venire incontro alle loro esigenze.
Tra il 26 agosto e il 4 settembre sono stati organizzati
lezioni di inglese per due gruppi di studenti in visita
dalla Provincia di Pordenone. Sia gli studenti sia
gli insegnanti hanno fatto commenti positivi sulle
lezioni del Co.As.It. Altri corsi di inglese sono stati
condotti per un gruppo di studenti provenienti
dall’Italia attraverso il nostro partner, Exchange Me.
Gli studenti delle scuole superiori hanno alloggiato
presso famiglie di Sydney e hanno partecipato a
lezioni quotidiane presso il Co.As.It.
L’ITALIAN FAMILY HISTORY GROUP
L’Italian Family History Group (IFHG) agisce sotto
l’auspicio del Co.As.It. per dare alla comunità la
possibilità di ricercare, registrare e celebrare la
propria origine italiana. Nel 2013 i meeting dell’IFHG
si sono tenuti presso il Centro Culturale del Forum
Italiano e hanno continuato ad attrarre i membri e
ospiti d’eccellenza tra cui:
• Art Phillips, musicista e compositore di film e tv;
• Julie Fitzsimons e Fabian Lo Schiavo;
• Mark Tedeschi, Crown Prosecutor e autore del
libro Eugenia;
• Nicola Cerrone, Designer di gioielli di fama
internazionale;
• Len Destro, che ha parlato del Dr. Thomas
Fiaschi, un medico-imprenditore titolare della
Tizzana Winery;
• Andrew Giunta, genero del Presidente
fondatore dell’IFHG, Dominic Arrivolo, che
ha parlato della digitalizzazione dei microfilm
contenenti dati ancestrali;
• Il Dr. Gianfranco Cresciani che ha parlato del
suo libro Trieste Goes to Australia;
• Sergio Martes, Console Generale d’Italia in
Sydney, che ha parlao dei diversi Paesi in cui
ha prestato servizio;
• Tony di Marti, immigrate in Australia a 16 anni
e divenuto uno dei principali intrattenitori e
cantanti italiani.
Nel 2013, Domenic Arrivolo si è dimesso da
Presidente dell’IFHG e ha ricevuto un riconoscimento
ufficiale per il suo eccellente contributo al gruppo
tra il 1999-2013. Continuerà a far parte della
Commissione dell’IFHG. I nuovi membri del Consiglio
d’Amministrazione sono: Art Phillips (Presidente),
Anthony Ravesi (Vice Presidente), Roberto Giunta
(Assistente Vice Presidente), Sue Lopes (Segretario) e
Maria Linders (Tesoriere); I membri della Commissione
sono: Dominic Arrivolo, Dianna Manganaro, Michael
Megna, John Re, Josie Valli e Francesca Rullo. I
membri sono impazienti di continuare a sviluppare,
promuovere e assistere chi è interessato a tracciare e

THE ITALIAN BILINGUAL SCHOOL
In 2013 the Italian Bilingual School (IBS) settled
into its new home at the Co.As.It. Meadowbank
Campus (CMC).
The School celebrated the official opening of the
new campus on Friday, 31 May 2013. The school
was officially opened by The Hon Peter Garrett,
Minister for School Education, Early Childhood
and Youth. The event brought together many
dignitaries, the parent community, students, staff,
academics and supporters of the School.
The new site provides a permanent home for
IBS and brings with it the ability to grow the
School, to expand the model to year 12 and to
truly make our School a centre of excellence.

learners and are designed to celebrate and
enhance the learning of languages in Australia,
New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. The
skills testing program includes listening and
reading comprehension tasks in a multiple choice
format designed to be both challenging and to
enable all students to experience success. The
ALC tests are conducted in schools.
Students respond to realistic texts and situations
using multiple choice format.
There is no need to teach particular topics for the
ALC tests. Topics are not advertised beforehand
so as to enable all students, regardless of state
or country, to have equal access to the materials
in the tests.
ALC tasks also draw on students’ knowledge and
understanding of language beyond the topic level.
This includes their socio-cultural knowledge, their
cognitive skills, their knowledge of the structure of
language and of the purposes of language, and
their knowledge of how texts are organised.
Certificate 1 is for students who have studied
the target language for approximately 100
hours by August in the year of testing. It is
aimed at upper primary and lower secondary
school. It is a listening test only.
In 2013 IBS Year Three students completed
the ALC with outstanding results CREDIT

MAJOR EVENTS
In 2013 IBS initiated a whole school benchmarking
system across both languages. This benchmarking
involves assessing students in February, July and
October using the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of
Basic Early Literacy Skills) instrument for English
and a school-based developed series of tests
for Italian. The School also initiated a project to
improve reading and writing skills whereby older
students tutor younger students in Italian.
INNOVATION CENTRE
IBS received a substantial grant from the Mamma
Lena and Dino Gustin Foundation. The grant will
commemorate the contribution of Mamma Lena
and Dino Gustin to te Italian community and will
allow the school to refurbish an existing building
on the property and establish a state of the art
multimedia centre. It includes a virtual library that
can be accessed 24/7 online utilising ebooks,
iPads and other technologies. One of the rooms will
be set up as a ‘green screen’ room with high-level
video capabilities. The other room will be converted
into an amateur radio station in which the students
will interact and create radio programs.
LUCA PARMITANO
IBS was selected as the only Australian school
to link-up with the International Space Station to
interview one of the astronauts on board, Luca
Parmitano – the first Italian to walk in space. Our
students asked him questions about his life in the
space station and the scientific implications of
this experiment. The link-up was done through a
special talk-back radio and the audience was able
to hear Luca Parmitano answering the questions.
FESTA DELLA FAMIGLIA
The school held its first Fete at the Meadowbank
campus on 3 November 2013. The fete was a
wonderful opportunity to celebrate our School
and introduce IBS to the broader community.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
The students at IBS are given numerous
opportunities to participate in a variety of social
and educational activities. The following list
provides some highlights of the year:
• La Settimana della Lingua Italiana – the
students prepared a range of presentations
for the parents of IBS including audio books, a
Big Book (fairytale) about grammar and spelling
rules as well as a concept map about language
structures. These were showcased to parents
who were also invited to visit classrooms during
reading activities.
• The senior students of Year 5/6 were involved
in a Team Building Day, Around the World
Day, Tomato Day, Pizza Day and a Teddy
Bear Picnic with their Kindergarten buddies
• Students from Years 4 to Year 6 attended
the annual Camp at Point Wolstoncroft.
• Specific activities included Carnevale, Anzac
Day, Bullying No Way Day, Harmony Day,
Science Day, International Teachers Day and
the Nonni Day which is always capped off with
an Easter hat parade
• The SRC visited Parliament House by special
invitation from the Hon Victor Dominello,
Member for Ryde, Minister for Citizenship and
Communities, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.
• The School initiated a Positive Behaviour for
Learning approach to Student Welfare and
developed an added merit award of Values in
Practice/Valori in Pratica. A particular value is
highlighted for the month and students from
each class are chosen to share a BBQ lunch
with the Principal based on their capacity to
demonstrate that quality.
• All the students from Kindergarten to Year
Six were given an opportunity to participate
in a public speaking competition to foster self
confidence and develop skills involved in the
presentation of formal and informal speeches
and/or debates
• The school is very fortunate to have created
its very own garden. The students are able
to plant a variety of vegetables that are used
throughout the school in various activities
• The Parents and Friends Association
donated a Pizza oven for the school which
has been used during special celebrations.
• The whole school celebrated the End of
Year Performance with a presentation of
iconic commercials from Australia and Italy.
It included items such as Vegemite, Mortein
and the famous Decore shampoo. The Italian
component highlighted the fact that during the
early times of “Carosello” companies could not
advertise their product without a storyline to
embellish their ideas.
SPORT
IBS has been well represented at the All Suburbs
Independent Schools Sport Association (ASISSA)
competitions of swimming, cross country and
athletics. The school had a number of students
who progressed and competed at the Combined
Independent Schools (CIS) competitions. An
outstanding representative of IBS, Isaac Natoli,
competed at the Combined Independent School
Athletic Carnival in the Senior Boys AWD 100m,
200m and Shot Put. He came first in all his events
setting two new CIS records in the 100m and
200m Senior Boys. Isaac also competed at the
National PSSA titles for the third consecutive year
in Queensland where he became the Australian
champion in the 100m and 200m individual
events for an unbelievable third time.
The school was also ably represented at the
PSSA Athletics Carnival by IBS students in the
mixed relay team.
Our Year Five and Six students represented IBS
at the Menai Indoor Soccer Championships. This
is the first time our students have participated in
this type of competition and demonstrated great
pride and IBS spirit during their three qualifying
games. The experience was another opportunity
for our students to explore the various sporting
activities provided by the school.
For the first time ever we had four students
represent IBS at the Regional Northern NSW
Interschools Championships in Perisher. These
students performed extremely well and went
through to the State Championships.

LA SCUOLA ITALIANA BILINGUE
Nel 2013 la Scuola Italiana Bilingue (IBS) si è
stabilita presso la sua nuova sede del Co.As.It.
Meadowbank Campus (CMC).
La scuola ha celebrato l’apertura ufficiale del nuovo
campus venerdì 31 maggio 2013. La scuola è
stata ufficialmente aperta dall’Onorevole Peter
Garrett, Ministro dell’educazione, dell’infanzia e
della gioventù. L’evento ha riunito molti dignitari,
la comunità dei genitori, gli studenti, il personale,
accademici e sostenitori della scuola.
La nuova struttura sarà la sede permanente della
scuola IBS e le permetterà di crescere, di espandere
il modello al dodicesimo anno e rendere la nostra
scuola un centro di eccellenza.

la possibilità di riuscita a tutti. I test ALC sono
condotti a scuola.
Gli studenti rispondono a domande a risposta
multipla su situazioni e test realistici.
Non si devono insegnare argomenti specifici per
i test ALC. Gli argomenti non sono pubblicati
precedentemente in modo da dare a tutti gli
studenti, senza distinzione di Stato o Paese, di
avere le stesse possibilità di accedere al materiale
d’esame.
Gli esami ALC esaminano la conoscenza e la
comprensione della lingua da parte degli studenti
al di là dell’argomento in discussione, tra cui
la conoscenza socio-culturale, le competenze
cognitive, la conoscenza della struttura e dello
scopo del linguaggio e la conoscenza di come
sono organizzati i testi.
Il certificato 1 è per gli studenti che hanno studiato
la lingua per circa 100 ore entro l’agosto dell’anno
di esame. Il test è solo di ascolto ed è specifico
per gli studenti degli ultimi anni di scuola primaria e
primi anni di scuola secondaria.
Nel 2013 gli alunni del terzo anno dell’IBS hanno
completato l’ALC con risultati eccellenti

EVENTI PRINCIPALI
Nel 2013 l’IBS ha avviato un sistema comprensivo
di benchmark di entrambe le lingue. Questo
benchmark implica la valutazione degli alunni a
febbraio, luglio e ottobre usando il sistema DIBELS
(Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)
per l’inglese e una serie di test sviluppati in ambito
scolastico per l’italiano. La scuola ha inoltre avviato
un progetto di lettura-scrittura che vede i ragazzi più
grandi fare da tutor agli alunni delle classi inferiori.
CENTRO INNOVATIVO
L’IBS ha ricevuto ingenti finanziamenti dalla Mamma
Lena and Dino Gustin Foundation. I finanziamenti
permetteranno alla scuola di rinnovare una
struttura esistente sulla proprietà per la creazione
di un centro multimediale allo stato dell’arte, con
una biblioteca virtuale accessibile on line 24 ore su
24 usando ebooks, iPads e altre tecnologie. Una
delle stanze avrà uno schermo verde con capacità
video di alto livello. L’altra stanza sarà convertita
in una stazione radio amatoriale in cui gli studenti
interagiranno e creeranno programmi da mandare
in onda.
LUCA PARMITANO
L’IBS è stata l’unica scuola Australiana selezionata
per collegarsi alla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale
per intervistare uno degli astronauti a bordo, Luca
Parmitano, il primo italiano a camminare nello
spazio. I nostri alunni hanno fatto domande sulla
vita nella stazione e le implicazioni scientifiche di
questo esperimento. Il collegamento è avvenuto
attraverso una radio talk-back e i presenti hanno
potuto ascoltare le risposte di Luca Parmitano.
FESTA DELLA FAMIGLIA
La scuola ha tenuto la sua prima festa al campus di
Meadowbank il 3 novembre 2013. La festa è stata
una fantastica occasione per celebrare la nostra
scuola e introdurre l’IBS alla comunità in generale.

Gli studenti dell’IBS hanno molte occasioni di
partecipare in varie attività educative e sociali. Ecco
alcuni eventi salienti dell’anno:
• La Settimana della Lingua Italiana – gli alunni
hanno preparato una serie di presentazioni
per i genitori tra cui audio books, un Big Book
(favola) sulla grammatica e le regole di ortografia
e una mappa concettuale sulle strutture della
lingua. I lavori sono stati presentati ai genitori
che sono anche stati invitati a visitare le classi
durante attività di lettura.
• Gli alunni del quinto e sesto anno hanno
partecipato a un Team Building Day, Around the
World Day, Tomato Day, Pizza Day e a Teddy
Bear Picnic con i compagni di Kindergarten.
• Gli alunni dal quarto al sesto anno hanno
partecipato al campeggio annuale a Point
Wolstoncroft.
• Attività specifiche come Carnevale, Anzac Day,
Bullying No Way Day, Harmony Day, Science
Day, International Teachers Day, il Nonni Day
culminante nella parata dei cappelli pasquali.
• Il SRC ha visitato Parliament House su invito
dell’Onorevole Victor Dominello, Membro
per Ryde, Ministro della Cittadinanza e della
Comunità, Ministro per gli Affari Aborigeni.
• La scuola ha avviato un approccio
“comportamento positivo per apprendere e
per il benessere degli studenti” e ha sviluppato
un premio Values in Practice/Valori in Pratica.
A ciascun mese viene assegnato un valore
specifico e gli alunni di ogni classe vengono
selezionati per pranzare con il Preside con un
BBQ in base alla loro capacità di dimostrare
quella qualità.
• Tutti gli alunni dal Kindergarten al sesto anno
hanno avuto la possibilità di partecipare al
concorso di discorsi pubblici per sviluppare
la propria confidenza e le capacità necessarie
alla presentazione di discorsi formali e informali
e dibattiti.
“Carosello” le compagnie non potevano fare
pubblicità ai propri prodotti senza una storia ad
abbellire le proprie idee.
SPORT
L’IBS è stata ben rappresentata nelle competizioni di
nuoto, corsa campestre e atletica della All Suburbs
Independent Schools Sport Association (ASISSA).
Alcuni alunni hanno completato le competizioni
delle Combined Independent Schools (CIS). Isaac
Natoli ha rappresentato in modo eccellente la
scuola completando e arrivando primo alle gare del
Combined Independent School Athletic Carnival
nel Senior Boys AWD 100m, 200m e lancio del
peso, e stabilendo due nuovi record CIS nei Senior
Boys 100m e 200m. Isaac ha anche partecipato
ai titoli National PSSA per tre anni di seguito in
Queensland dove è diventato Campione nazionale
dei 100m e 200m per un incredibile terza volta.
La scuola ha anche partecipato al PSSA Athletics
Carnival nella staffetta mista.
I nostri alunni del quinto e sesto anno hanno
rappresentato l’IBS nel Menai Indoor Soccer
Championships. È la prima volta che gli alunni
partecipano a un evento di questo genere e hanno
dimostrato grande orgoglio e spirito dell’IBS durante
le tre partite di qualificazione. L’esperienza è stata
un’altra occasione per gli studenti per esplorare
diverse attività sportive offerte dalla scuola.
Per la prima volta abbiamo avuto quattro alunni in
rappresentanza dell’IBS nei campionati Regional

OBJECTIVES
The short-term objectives of the company are:
• To optimise the effectiveness of the Board so that Co.As.It. thrives and grows.
• To develop and re-position the language services so that it becomes sustainable and
financially viable by strengthening self-funding and consolidating funding sources.
• To develop, re-position and enhance Co.As.It. Community Services so that funding is
maximised and community needs are met.
The long-term objective of the company is to improve the quality of life of the community
and promote the Italian language and culture in NSW by providing a range of culturally and
linguistically appropriate services. Consolidation of IBS at the campus at Meadowbank, thus
providing stability for the school. Purchase of the Meadowbank property by Co.As.It. Italian
Association of Assistance was completed this year.
STRATEGY FOR ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVES
ITALIAN BILINGUAL SCHOOL
• The need to develop and strengthen the Co.As.It. culture in the school so that staff, students
and parents who come to the school are fully supportive of the organisation’s visions and
values
• The need to develop a K-12 model
• The need to develop transition strategies to support the students who move into secondary
school from IBS
• The need to explore possibilities of creating links with other bilingual schools in Australia and
overseas in order to strengthen, consolidate and continue to refine the bilingual model
• The need to explore the possibility of introducing other languages
• The need to continue to cultivate a culture of innovation in education in the school
• The need to develop innovative strategies to retain, develop and attract quality staff to the
organisation
• The need to develop and grow the profile of IBS in the Sydney area so that enrolments
continue to increase
• The need to work toward the provision of a long-day care centre
COMMUNITY SERVICES
• Move the community service area to become a mainstream service area while maintaining
its cultural orientation and expertise.
• Expand programs across areas of need in areas outside of Sydney (for example Griffith or
Canberra).
• Continue to innovate and provide targeted care that meets the changing needs of the
community.
• Develop innovative strategies to retain, develop and attract quality staff to the organisation.
LANGUAGE SERVICES
• Focus on technology and innovation in order to expand and develop the range of Italian
language and heritage services.
• Develop a new model for delivering Italian instruction in schools.
• Explore market opportunities and expand user-pay services in the language training sector.
• Move toward setting up a training and learning centre.
• Identify alternative funding sources.
• Develop the Heritage service area.
• Develop the activities of the Italian Multimedia Resource Centre.
• Develop innovative strategies to retain, develop and attract quality staff to the organisation.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
The principal continuing activities of the company during the year included the provision of
a comprehensive range of linguistically and culturally appropriate community services to the
Italian Australia Community. Also the teaching of the Italian language at infant and primary level,
the promotion of the Italian Language and Culture and the provision of a Multimedia Resource
Centre for teachers and students from Kindergarten to University level and the operation of the
Italian Bilingual School.
There were no significant changes in the nature of activities of the company during the year.
PERFORMANCE MEASURES
The company measures its performance via a range of qualitative and quantitative criteria. These
include overall monitoring of financial performance and specific qualitative and quantitative
outcomes as required by the various funding bodies such as the NSW Board of Studies, NSW
DEC, NSW Department of Health, NSW Department of Gaming and Racing, Commonwealth
Department of Health and Ageing, DEEWR, and the Italian Government.
