Greetings all,
“Ask the ET” evening is a perennial favorite and last night was no exception.
Fifty-eight ostomates, friends and family gathered to ask “the before and after
team” of Connie Schulz; Ottawa Hospital and Diane Dutrisac; Carefor. There
was no shortage of questions and, as always, the answers were very informative.
For a number of members it was like old home week as these were the angels
that helped so many of us through some very difficult times and provided the tools to help us
move forward with dignity. Thank you.
We often discuss advocacy and the need not to accept the status quo in regards to getting the
health care you both need and deserve. Well, I have to tip my cap to the Pembroke group
who are working hard to improve ostomate resources in Renfrew County. In January, a group
of Pembroke area ostomates met with Sabine Mersmann, the VP of patient services Pembroke
hospital and shared with her the lack of understanding and the limited resources available to
ostomates at the hospital. She was surprised with the lack of support. As a result, she
contacted the Ottawa Hospital, reached out to both the CCAC and a local surgeon for input. In
early March, Doug Graham and I drove up for a follow up meeting. Sabine reiterated that she
recognized the lack of services and was looking into constructive options. A number of ideas
were discussed; however, hospital resources are limited. Throughout Renfrew County, there is
a network of heath care support service units. Doug raised the possibility of recruiting the
ostomy manufacturers’ to hold free ET clinics at these units and volunteered to contact the
manufacturer’s reps. The Pembroke Regional Hospital will investigate the viability of such a
plan. At the same time, CCAC will research the possibility of providing additional training to
wound care nurses in the area. These are short-term solutions, which have yet to be
implemented, that could significantly benefit the ostomate population in the area. A
combination of persistence from a few Pembroke ostomates and willingness on the part of the
hospital to understand their concerns may reap significant change.
Next Month Anna Varriano, of Perfect Resonance Natural Health Counselling will discuss
physiological implications of an ostomy on nutrition and an approach to better overall health
and well-being, through nutrition and healthy living.

Musings...
As I anxiously await the snow to melt and my garden to be workable, I
will spend April browsing the seed and plant catalogues. This year I hope
to get back to gardening, although I have yet to decide if I will brave the
suburban wild-life and add vegetables to my flower beds. You see, in
years past, the squirrels and chipmunks have been quite aggressive; knocking every
pepper off its plant and taking one single bite out of each red, ripe tomato. Then, of
course, there are rabbits which tend to seem to take over, razing the carrot tops to the
ground and leaving behind plenty of pellets. And, I haven’t even mentioned the skunks
and the occasional raccoon! Vegetables or not, I look forward to the forget-me-nots
and irises that are first to grace my tiny patch of land. Later, I expect some surprises,
as I had the garden reshaped last summer thanks to another form of wild-life: the
grubs. This resulted in me losing some of my plants and gaining others from my Aunt –
a talented artist and gardener.
So come ahead spring with the joys of seeing tulips on the road sides and blooms in my
back yard…
BTW: I have included my tried and true sugar cookie recipe, as I always made them for
my nieces and nephews at Eastertime.

Terminology Part IV -the I s
IBD: Inflammatory bowel disease; term used to describe a group of bowel
diseases which cause an inflammation in the bowel, such as ulcerative colitis
and Crohn's disease.
Ileitis: Inflammation of the small bowel (ileum).
Ileoanal reservoir (also:Continent ileostomy): Surgical technique of constructing an intra-abdominal
pouch from part of the ileum. May be referred to as a Kock pouch or an ileo-anal reservoir. External
appliances are not required.
Ileostomy: A surgical opening from the small bowel (ileum) to the surface of the abdomen, forming a
stoma for the discharge of stool (fecal material).
Ileum: The small bowel; joins the colon (large bowel). Major functions are digestion and absorption of
nutrients, and absorption of electrolytes.
Indiana Pouch (also:Continent urostomy): Surgical technique of an intra-abdominal pouch from a section
of bowel for retention of urine, after dysfunction or removal of bladder. May be referred to as Kock
urostomy or Indiana pouch. External appliances are not required.
Irrigation: Procedure which flushes bowel via insertion of water through stoma into colon. Only suitable
for persons with sigmoid or descending colostomy; should only be undertaken after consultation with
physician or ET.

Mazola Corn Oil Sugar Cookies
2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
3/4 Mazola Corn Oil
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix and sift together first four ingredients; set
aside.
Combine oil and sugar in mixing bowl. Add
unbeaten eggs, one at a time, beating well after
each addition. Add vanilla. Add sifted dry
ingredients all once; mix well.
Shape dough into balls about inch in diameter.
Dip tops of balls into granulated sugar. Place balls
of dough, sugar side up, about 3 inches apart on
lightly greased baking sheet. Press cookie with
tines of fork, criss-crossing with fork, to flatten
dough.
Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees F) 10 to 12
minutes. Remove, immediately from baking
sheet.
Makes about 5 dozen cookies

Using a hot tub when you are an ostomate
-gathered from UOSG members in response to a question to the UOSG Ostomy








Hot Line
Wear time: if you are only going into the hot tub once, put on a new appliance
a day or two before you visit the spa so that you are not near the beginning or near the end of the wear
time.
Staying in the hot tub for a long time, may shorten appliance wear time, as the appliance may lose some
of its ability to adhere to the skin. This means you may need to change the flange sooner than usual.
15-20 minutes is probably a good maximum time to spend in the water (whether or not you have an
ostomy)
No-one is aware of any unique issues depending on the type of ostomy; the issues for ileostomates,
colostomates, and urostomates are similar in this regard.
There are several products that can add an additional layer of security. One is a very thin membrane-like
film that goes over the flange and “picture-frames” it. Try it before you need it, as it is tricky to get used
to; it has a tendency to stick to itself and not come apart. Several companies make a product of this type.
One brand is advertised in the Ottawa Ostomy News.
For an even further level of security, wear a pouch cover or bathing suit with a pocket on the inside that
you can tuck the bag into, so in the very unlikely event that the flange does come loose, it will stay close
to your body until you can apply another one. Both pouch covers and bathing suits for male and female
ostomates are available commercially on-line, or make it yourself. You can see pictures on-line, try
searching for “ostomy pouch pocket”. Custom-made bathing suits are available in Ottawa.
Have extra supplies (this is always a good idea!) with you. Putting these in a sealable
plastic bag that can double as a waste bag is helpful. You could also bring an extra
(small) towel and a fan, to dry off before you apply a new flange, should that be necessary.
With a little planning and common sense you can enjoy your hot tub experience. Many
of our members love their hot tubs!

OTTAWA OSTOMY OUTREACH (OOO)

Helping ASTOM-ILKO
The Ottawa Ostomy Outreach project has supported the
Ukrainian Ostomy Association since the beginning. Even
before that, I sent supplies on a regular basis for over 10
years. With a membership of over 500; when we do not
have enough supplies I ask my counterpart, Ruth, from the
USA to help out. She always does! The last skid of supplies she sent was held at the airport warehouse in
Kiev, needing permission and release papers from the Health Minister. Once the skid was released, it could
not be picked up because of the danger on the streets: including barricades and other problems. After a few
weeks, and some danger relief, the Kiev group was able to retrieve the skid and move it into their facility for
distribution. Their members are very grateful for the needed ostomy supplies, especially in this difficult political
time. Thanks to all members who donated supplies and money for shipping costs. (See photo.)
I received the following letter a few weeks ago. I have been and maybe others from our group have been in
similar situations and we all know living under these conditions is difficult and it is very difficult getting
supplies. As much as possible, Ruth and I, with the help from all of you, will continue to send supplies.

The Revolution does today take part here in the Ukraine. Almost all
people of Ukraine did rise and rebelled against the President, State
power and authorities, which are no longer considered with the
people. They stopped to communicate and understand people,
while trampling on their dignity, honour, freedom and the right to a
decent life. Unfortunately blood has spilled, peaceful young people
were killed, and we are all here in mourning.
The people can no longer endure the arbitrariness of the President
of Ukraine as well corruption on all branches of State power, the
impunity of all officials and enforcement officers.
We do support and are very grateful to аll Canadian People,
Government of Canada for assistance towards the people of
Ukraine, for introduction of sanctions against persons who are not
able to govern our State and who are blamed for the death and
injury of people.
We are leaving with a deep gratitude, respect and best wishes of
welfare and health to all peoples of Canada!

Always check with your health specialist
before following any medical

To
help the pouch flange stick better gently warm it’s sticky side – a low heat hair dryer for
30 secs is ideal for this. It helps make the glue super-tacky, and also makes firm flanges more
pliable and mould-able to your personal skin.
If
you are changing the flange etc. with your clothes, roll up your shirt/
sweater etc at the front to reveal the ostomy. The take a regular clothes peg
and peg the clothes into place. This way you have both hands free to clean
your ostomy, and not have to struggle with one hand as the other is holding
your clothes up, or worse yet saves you getting chin/neck ache from holding the clothes up

Urostomy -Ostomate tips
Here is one for urostomates or perhaps all ostomates. To keep “dry” during changes try this.
Take a good quality paper towel and fold it twice making it a 6 X 6 square. Cut an X in the
center large enough to fit over your stoma. When changing, place the X over the stoma and take
the four corners of the towel and pull them up and hold them like a flower over the stoma. This
will provide a collection wick and allow you to move the paper collector around to, shave, clean,
dry or whatever you want while staying dry from dribbles. Sure beats Tampax or gauze.

your urine contains some mucus shreds. If mucus clogs the drain spout of your
pouch, drink more fluids to help unclog it. You may also purchase Marlen Muco-Sperse to
dissolve clogged mucus. Your ET (enterostomal therapy)/ostomy nurse can tell you how to

Ileostomy -Ostomate tips

I
have only been an ileostomate for 5 months, so
I am sure there is a better way of doing things
that I haven't found yet, but I have realised that
if you put a piece of toilet tissue (a piece folded
over a couple of times is good) over your stoma
as soon as you get out of the shower that it holds
there because you are wet and it sticks to you
and it stops the stoma shooting out ***
everywhere and making a mess (which is what
used to happen to me until recently). If, of
course you are having a particularly loose day
then you will need to hold your hand over it too
or change the toilet tissue a couple of times. By
doing this it allows you to dry your self and not
stand and freeze whilst putting on a new pouch.

you take an appliance with you in case of
accidents when you are out, put an old baby
washcloth and your new appliance in a ziplock
bag. When you go to the bathroom clean your
skin well with the baby washcloth then put it in
the ziplock bag along with your old appliance,
zip it up and discard it. You'll feel better
throwing it away like that, I even use ziplock
bags at every discard ,they are very inexpensive.
