Desmond Koay
A Golden Boy In Training
It was his first international competition, and
also his first trip to Korea. Desmond had the
time of his life, and came home with a silver
medal. You bet this is the best souvenir ever!
from Incheon, and I placed 2nd and 9th in the
slide and speed slaloms.
Q: Please tell us how it all began.
Teams came from all over the world – from
Russia, China, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Italy,
France, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia. Our ages
range from 14-20 years. I made many new
friends, and learnt 3 moves from the Russians
- toe-fake, heel-fake and toe-spin.
Desmond: In June 2010, I started skating for
fun, and I found it so enjoyable that it became
a weekly activity. Watching other skaters, I
picked up a couple of skills - backwards and
slide skating.
Q: Describe your experiences in Pyeongchang

A Swimming Gala for All!
Q: Tell us what is happening next.
Q: In two years, you went from novice to
world-class skater.
Desmond: Yes. In late 2010, I met the
President of Kelab Sukan Inline Skate Free
Style, Dexter Lim, at the Queensbay Mall
Skating Rink. He invited me to join his club at
Mall Pacific in Butterworth where he trains,
competes and teaches. I became part of a 5member team, and we train a few times
weekly. I would also train 2 hours daily
before bedtime.
Dexter is opening a shop at Times Square,
which also doubles as the Kelab’s HQ. It is an
exciting time for all of us. On November 29,
we are going to Bangkok for the Thailand
Slalom Series, in its third year now. I am
really looking forward to seeing my Saudi and
Taiwanese friends again!

Q: What was your confidence level before this
competition?
Desmond: In June 2012, I came fourth in the
inaugural Malaysia Junior Speed Slalom. Two
months later, I took part in the Korea Leisure
Sports Inline Skating Slalom Cup and came
second. It was held in Pyeongchang, 2 hours

Ready, Get Set....

SWIMMING GALA 2012

The day started off with warm sunshine
and a slight breeze. Teachers arrived
first, followed by parents with their
children in tow.
In past years, the Swimming Gala was
more than just a day of races. It was an
important bonding activity that
celebrates friendship and
sportsmanship, and the first PIS
Swimming Gala was no different.
Each race was accompanied by loud
cheering, and everyone had a really
good time. Of special mention is Joram
Bonus, one of the students who had
severe leg cramps, but went back into
the water for his next race.
Joram, we couldn’t have asked for more!

Aladdin was set in Islamic
China?
and that Aladdin was the son of
a Chinese tailor?
BREAKING NEWS
There are plans to bring Aladdin to
Broadway, although no specific dates
are given. The production will likely
contain illusions, camels, magic flying
carpets, giant water effects, and a live
interactive 3DS movie created
especially for it.
On 9 November 2012, the entire school
came together to give that one
performance, which they have been
rehearsing daily for the past month. The
Magic Lamp was the brainchild of Ms
Christina, who oversaw the entire
process from script-writing, production,
directing and dance choreography.
Vibrant and rousing, this musical
extravaganza represents the best efforts
of teachers and students. The props
were beautifully and meticulously
designed, earning praises from anyone
who sees them.
Oh, oh, and Josie Alayon sparkled as the
Genie. Psst….we believe she might just
be the next Lea Salonga!
PIS is proud to present this story of
young tender love, set in an exotic
faraway land. It is our hope that
subsequent productions will be equally
exciting and successful.

MS CLAUDINE & MS WAI PHENG:
Brownies are girls from primary school who are members of the junior branch of the Girl Guides Association.
They have lots of fun together and learn useful and exciting things. They sing and dance like pixies and are
helpful girls in school and at home. Brownies promise to help other people every day - even when they are busy.
They are the joy and pride of their parents!

MR ALEX:
This CCA was launched in 2011, and designed for under-13 boys and girls. We aim to improve and develop their
skills for the new soccer season. We are collaborating with other international schools and are looking forward to
have plenty of games with them. We have competed with Dalat, Uplands and Tenby for Under-13 category.
MR JOSEPH:
Taekwondo is a new initiative at PIS. It aims to instill discipline and mental toughness. We are very lucky to have
Mr Rajendran and his assistant as our coaches.

People Focus
~ MR KANG KIM CHWEE ~
Pelita International School extends a warm welcome to
Mr Kang Kim Chwee, who arrived in Penang on 13 August
as our new education specialist. He has 20 years of
teaching experience in technology and engineering,
his last school being Corelli College, Greenwich,
UK. Prior that, he was a designer in architecture and
industries for 12 years.
Mr Kang is responsible for a curriculum that is completely
new to PIS, and holds Design and Technology classes
from Year 1-9. He has established the workshop from
scratch, from machinery to workbenches and raw materials.
More importantly, Mr Kang has generously shared his
knowledge on UK teaching and learning approaches with
staff and students alike.
Mr Kang loves Penang food, and has familiarized himself with all local favourites – beef rendang, nasi kandar, char kway teow, the list
is endless! As he loves cooking too, he will be introducing his favourite UK dishes to students during culinary classes at PIS.
INTRODUCING PENANG TO MR KANG!
STUDENT “N” SAYS:
I have been to one shopping mall in Penang called ‘Queensbay Mall’. It is extremely huge, I think it is the
largest mall in Penang. There are many shops out there, like Aldo, MNG, ELLE, G2000, GAP and lots more
and certainly there are lots of restaurants as well. I could not remember all those restaurants’ names. I could
only remember some that I usually get in and have my lunch or sometime dinners. My favorite place is
always ‘Nando’s’. This is my all-time favorite restaurant in either Queensbay or Gurney, but you can
actually find it in some other countries.
