November 13 1 - 4:30 PM Frick Park Non-member: $24 Member: $18 “ November 5 and 6 7:45 AM - 5 PM Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center Non-member: $260 Member: $225 ” This training involved a lot of hands-on scenarios, and it was great to be able to do them indoors or outdoors (or both!). The location was great! TRIP LEADER SPOTLIGHT ON ERIN McCORMICK When did you start volunteering with Venture Outdoors? I started volunteering with Venture Outdoors the summer of 2012. I had just moved to Pittsburgh in January of that year and got clued into all of the awesome hiking and kayaking opportunities Venture Outdoors offered. Going to multiple events as a participant then led to the fun of becoming a Trip Leader. What is your favorite activity to lead? I can’t decide between Fireworks Paddles and Beginner Paddles. Both of them give me the opportunity to get people outside and let them experience one of my favorite parts of paddling: taking a moment to just sit motionless on the water, breathe, look around, and feel connected and at peace with the world around me (this happens whenever I get into a kayak). Fireworks Paddles top that experience off with dramatic explosions and vibrant colors, and Beginner Paddles mix that moment with the excitement of helping people learn (or improve on) a physical skill that will enable them to explore the world in a new way. Describe a happy / funny story from a Venture Outdoors outing. One of my favorite trips was a familyfocused tour of the Allegheny Commons. The kids on the trip were all (surprisingly) focused on the material and the group had a great time. I had a great time watching them gather around to stare at the trees, listen for strange bird sounds from the aviary, and ask questions about the history of the area. Where is your favorite place to be outside in Pittsburgh? Frick Park remains one of my favorite locations to explore. It still boggles my mind that such a large green space is surrounded by city neighborhoods and very accessible, but doesn’t feel urban at all.
