In Jewish tradition, an emissary, ‘shaliach’, is one who performs an action on behalf of another person or etity, with the result of the action credited solely to the sender, not to the emissary. I see us all as emissaries. Our senders are not just filmmakers, networks and countries. Our sender is documentary cinema at large, yearning for us to distribute it with integrity, authenticity and excellence. I welcome you, as an emissary of the recently market for completed Israeli documentary films, to the 2013 DocuShuk. We have been working arduously in the last few months to curate for you the marvelous assortment of films featured in these pages, all ready for watching. Some of them I had gotten to know over recent years in various CoPro events, in their earlier stages of development. These are joined by dozens of additional titles of wonderful, tightly crafted and well-packed cinema, wishing you to lend it your eyes and ears, but most of all your hearts. As you are about to begin your journey into Israeli culture, I wish our country discloses to you its most captivating qualities and turbulent energies, through a sober yet merciful prism, from a harsh and stubborn yet humane and compassionate viewpoint, just as exquisite documentary cinema of the highest standards should. I thank Carmel Gottlieb Kimhi for the article. The selected theme, “A Place to Include”, is a pristine example of the challenges encountered by Israeli documentarists who are furiously tossed between the timeless and the transient dimensions of our ‘here and now’. Finally, I would like to end on a personal note. I have been with CoPro since its 3rd year, and today, in the festive mark of 15 years of operation, I wish to thank Orna for affording me the privilege of marketing Israeli documentaries. As I said in the beginning, it is not only an occupation, it is a vocation. Enjoy every minute, Yours, Zichrini - DocuShuk Editor 3 A Place to Include: The Comprehensive Discourse of Place in Israeli Documentary Films Carmel Gottlieb Kimhi "Place always involves a corporeal and cultural struggle between groups acting in space and striving for self-determination by means of spaces within they act."[1] Groups, be they large or small are the actual protagonists of this year's crop of documentary films, supported by CoPro. The "Place", and those who inhabit it, is these films' hero. The corpus of films creates a comprehensive and complex discourse that accommodates for a variety of marginal groups in Israeli society. Garden of Eden, by Ran Tal (2012) Garden of Eden draws a portrait of Gan HaShlosha National Park-"the Sachne". A place designed as a spatial manifestation of the Zionist vision. In 2012's reality, however, it serves people of all ethnic groups and social sectors of Israeli society, and is the films' spatial anchor. It opens with a quote from Lipa Yahalom, one of the architects who planned the park: "The fantasy of a landscape-architect is to turn a piece of land into dreaming havens". Immediately afterwards, using a naturalistic cinematic language, The film follows the park and its visitors throughout the year, giving presence to the beauty of the seasonal transformations. Alongside the lyrical depiction of nature, the director exposes the human mosaic attending the park. He shows daily life in the park with typically Israeli scenes and human situations such as, Barbeque fanning and drooping bellies. The population of the park includes Jews of both Ashkenazi and Mizrahi descent, Arabs, religious people, secular people, singles, groups, kibbutz members, city residents, babies and what not. Almost every group in society is represented here. In this sense, the film embodies the comprehensive discourse. Several conclusions can be drawn from the film. I would like to focus on two. The first is the aftermath of the architect's initial Zionist vision; though his original intent may have been to serve primarily 5 the inhabitants of the surrounding kibbutzim, the site ends up serving all people living in the area or touring it, namely all walks of Israeli society. The second connects with the voice Ran Tal gives to individuals visiting or working in the Sachne Park, among them a man deserted by his wife and children who never again found peace; a woman who managed to free herself from a battering husband; a bereaved father who speaks about his dead son; and a young Arab man who feels estranged in his original environment in Um El Fahem and dreams of immigrating. Tal brings us a collage of figures, all bearing great pain. The only thing these figures have in common is their humanity, the fact that their lives are far from perfect, and that they come to spend time and somewhat relieve their misery at the Sachne Park. In many ways, this is but a casual and random collection of people. However, the fact that what binds them together is a spatial context of such a Zionist background turns these people into national assets, renders them voice and meaning within the national space. Cinema Jenin, by Marcus Vetter (2012) Two things connect Garden of Eden and Cinema Jenin. One is a geographical fact: on their way to the Sachne, the streams bringing water to the park cross the northern part of Samaria, across Jenin. Another is the fact that both open with a dream: whereas in Garden of Eden, the architect Yahalom dreams of turning a piece of land into dreaming havens, Cinema Jenin is subtitled "A Story of a Dream". After all, cinema is 'the dream industry'. However, in contrast to the original expression, which implies that cinema allows the audience to live for about two hours in a dream, documentary cinema may serve as an activist tool and helps turn dreams into reality. This is precisely the case in Cinema Jenin. 6 The film shows the restoration of a ruined movie- theater in Jenin, a city situated at the north Samaria region, inhabited by 39,000 residents and serving as a regional center for another 250,000 people. At its center is a refugee camp. Jenin became known as the capital of suicide bombers and a stronghold of resistance against Israeli rule. It is currently governed by the Palestinian Authority. The renewal of the movie-theater was initiated by Marcus Vetter, this film's director, Ismail Hatib, a bereaved father and Fakhri Hammed, who started off as an interpreter and became the project's manager. Vetter and Hammed live today in Germany and keep away from Jenin, mainly due to the danger hovering over their heads after the murder of their friend and colleague Juliano Mer Khamis in April 2011, an assassination that receives considerable mention in the film.[2] In the eyes of its renovators, the movie-theater's space envisions an utopian space and normalization of the area. Like Mer Khamis' Freedom Theater, their theater was supposed to provide positive educational alternatives for the loads of free time at the disposal of the population in Jenin and its surroundings, 54% of which is under 18. Inoccupation and lack of activity drove many youngsters to negative activities, and – as in the case of Ismail Khatib's son – exposed the kids to involvement in the war, and eventually to injuries and death. The film ends with a "happy ending": the reconstruction is completed, and the place is starting to function as a cultural center. Is the space in this film an Israeli space? The answer contains one of the main reasons that this film was probably granted Israeli funding. The film presents a certain aspect of the Arab-Israeli conflict that takes place at an extremely nearby inaccessible space. This is definitely not an Israeli space. Although situated in a territory formerly under Israeli rule, it is now ruled by the Palestinian Authority. Furthermore, the film speaks English, Arabic and German; Hebrew is seldom heard. None of the 7 protagonists is Israeli, except for Mer-Khamis, who at a certain point proclaims "we are Arabs" and thus determines where he chooses to belong. All in all the space in this film is an Arab, Palestinian space, and its Israeli link is restricted to the scars left by the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, personified in youngsters' funerals, barriers on passages and gateways, and in the ruined and abandoned movie-theater – (a symptom of the ongoing war) and through the professionals who come to contribute their skills and experience to the cinema's restoration. In fact, the Israeli space is present only in the footprints left by the conflict. Ponevezh Time, by Yehonatan Indursky (2012) Cinema Jenin associates with Ponevezh Time-in that both are spaces to research. The latter, a space that belongs to the radical group of orthodox Jews in Israel, known only to those who study in this Yeshiva. Ponevezh was established about eighty years ago in the Lithuanian town of Ponevezh and is renowned in the Jewish orthodox world. Yehonatan Indursky, the film's creator graduated from it. Like the other places discussed in this article, the Yeshiva serves as the spatial anchor of the cinematic treatment. For its students the yeshiva constitutes a home as well as a social framework. The events in it take place away from the public's eye, hidden from the outside crowd – a fact that makes the Yeshiva a fascinating object for documentary exploration. The way it is depicted in the film Ponevezh Yeshiva somehow brings to mind Hogwarts – Harry Potter's school of wizardry – a place secular readers are probably far better acquainted with than with an ultra-orthodox Yeshiva. As in Harry Potter's movies, here too, the camera gives us access to a secret 8 order's school. Without the camera, we would not be granted a chance to look into this place and meet its inhabitants, nor would we have even the smallest chance to comprehend the kind of life they lead. The students in this Yeshiva are considered the top of the orthodox world, the place where future leaders come from. As in Hogwarts, the atmosphere here is one of "might is right", characterized by intense human loneliness, harsh competitiveness and Spartan living and studying conditions. It brings together both youngsters and young adults, all have difficulties coping with the Chavruta issue, the search for studying partners. As in Hogwarts, here too we encounter terrified students alongside thick-bearded teachers. However, In contrast with Hogwarts, in this film the director follows only a few, very lonely students, who do not belong to a group. He accompanies them in their daily struggle with the hardships of Yeshiva life. The film observes the Yeshiva with a critical eye. It regards with a significant amount of empathy, even condescension, these characters compelled to squeeze themselves within the walls of the Yeshiva, settle for a life limited to the spiritual dimension, forever busy postponing their bodily and emotional gratifications. In the film's final scene, the camera focuses on a young man who has joined the Yeshiva this year and finds himself extremely lonely amidst a loudly jubilant crowd. The scene expresses the director's attitude towards this crowd. His own identification with this young man and his loneliness. This is probably one of the reasons why Indursky is now observing the Yeshiva from the outside, as a filmmaker. Is the space depicted in this film Israeli? Definitely. It is located in the city of Bnei Brak, its characters speak Hebrew most of the time and manage their lives within a social milieu that is part of the Israeli society; Despite the fact that they belong to the radical ultra-orthodox sector, they are nevertheless 9 Jewish. The place’s accessibility to the camera represents the gradual opening of this world to secular eyes, and every step towards acquaintance is an initial stage in the process of approximation and opening up. Life in Stills, by Tamar Tal (2011) In Life in Stills too, the concept of "place" is at the very heart of the film. IT follows the owners of the Pri Or photo shop and their wish to preserve their place and presence in Israeli space in general and in Tel Aviv in particular. The photographer and founder of Pri Or, the late Rudi Wiessenstein, took pictures of the greatest figures in Israel's history and of crucial moments and events in the establishment of the country, including its declaration. The building in which the shop is located is about to be demolished and replaced by a six-story building, forcing the shop to clear out. Rudi's widow Miriam and their grandson Ben Peter struggle to keep the place alive and receive recognition as a cultural asset. Their struggle is one family's battle against the capitalistic spirit of Israeli society today. Capitalism and gentrification are not the only new forces at work here: the clash between the young grandson's viewpoint vis-à-vis the archaic viewpoint of his 96 years old grandmother reflects another level of struggle. The grandson strives to preserve the place, but he still wishes to create something new, whereas his grandmother wishes to keep its old order intact. The grandson wants to display the photographs in exhibitions around the world and sell "pictures of bygone times" for a small fee. His grandmother sees most clients as naggers who should be sent away. She refrains from accepting her grandson's ideas and doubts his judgment. We thus witness here two parallel struggles: between the 10 forces of capitalism and the middle class on one hand, and between the older generation and that of their grandchildren on the other. Middleclass small entrepreneurs were the ones who built and inhabit the city of Tel Aviv and turned it to what it currently is. The evacuation of the photo shop symbolizes the change the city is going through, its transformation from a middleclass dwelling place to a place affordable only to global capitalists, willing and able to pay fortunes for real estate and boutique hotels. In this film, therefore, "place" is at the core of several struggles: the struggle for the preservation of the actual place – the Pri Or photo shop; the struggle for preserving the place of the Wissensteins' family heritage in the city and nationwide; the struggle between grandmother and grandson over the character and the directions their photo shop should take; and the struggle between the middleclass and the new capitalist forces. It is a pleasure to close this article with a film created by a woman, that portrays a grandson who belongs to the homosexual community, his grandmother who is in her nineties and their gradually developing close relationship. Choosing these protagonists the film applies the comprehensive discourse of documentary cinema to its margins (in this case, older women and gays). The place presented in all four films is an inclusive place, one that accommodates for "the other" in Israeli society. In each of these films, place is the film's main anchor, and the filmmaker regards it with a complex look. In Garden of Eden, Ran Tal's embodies both a poetic exhilaration induced by the natural setting and a kind of repulsion of the daily atmosphere of barbecues and drooping bellies; in Cinema Jenin, the changes the movie-theater might bring about arouse hope and astonishment, bu 11 also a critical outlook of the Palestinian space; in Ponevezh Time, the place's sanctity is regarded with appreciation combined with disapproval regarding the interpersonal relationships; and in Life in Stills the film's standpoint favors free enterprise and the middleclass' role in Tel Aviv's life, yet criticizes the grandmother's anachronistic attempt to maintain the old order intact where this is no longer possible. This complex look creates diversity, stimulates spectators' curiosity and reinforces bonds of trust between the spectators and filmmakers, whose look introduces the spectators into unfamiliar and inaccessible worlds and offers a fascinating outlook at the Israeli place and at the spaces abutting it and affected by it.
