A student has the flexibility of taking a mix of standard or foundation subjects depending on his strength in each subject Subject Combination Subject Combination 4S1H 4S 2S2F 4F Subjects English Maths Science Mother Tongue (& Higher MT) English Maths Science Mother Tongue English Foundation Foundation Mother Maths Science Tongue Foundation Foundation Foundation Basic Mother English Maths Science Tongue How Subject-based Banding works P4 Based on student’s results, school recommends a to subject combination P5 Student takes subject combination chosen by parents Student takes subject combination decided by school If student takes 4 standard subjects and has difficulty coping, school may allow him to take 1 or more subjects P5 at foundation level at P6 to If student takes 1 or more foundation subject(s) and P6 does very well in the subjects: • school may allow him to upgrade some subjects to standard level if the school believes he can cope • continue with the same subject combination in P6 PSLE – Placement Examination • Need to reflect the relative achievement level of students with their peers. • Places students into different courses according to their academic ability. • Enables posting to Secondary Schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice. PSLE Access Arrangements For students with special needs (e.g. ADHD, Autism, visual/hearing/speech impairment) ◦ May apply to request access arrangements ◦ Applications must be accompanied by a medical report from a professional e.g. psychologist, occupational therapist ◦ PSLE Certificates will be annotated for some arrangements e.g. extra time Apply through the form teachers Submissions close end January What is T-Score? • It gives the relative standing of student’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other level students in that subject. • PSLE Aggregate Score is a sum of the Tscores and NOT raw score of the 4 subjects. Example John scores 85% in EL & MTL 85% He did much better in EL as compared to other students. EL 0 His performance in MT is very close to that of his peers. MTL EL Ave = 60 MTL Ave = 80 Aggregate T-Score Total T Score = TEL + TMTL + TMATH + TSC = 61 + 54 + 55 + 58 = 228 T = 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 = 200 (Express Stream) Calculation of T-score - Y) (X T = 50 + 10 Z X: student’s mark for the subject Y: average mark (mean) scored by all students Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation) Example Subject English Chinese Maths Science Total Mark T-Score 200 105 34 200 152 51 100 67 53 100 58 47 Aggregate Score = 185 S1 Posting Method S1 Posting Method By MERIT By CHOICE 285 284 By MERIT All PSLE students will be ranked by their PSLE Scores 263 240 and below S1 Posting Method By MERIT By CHOICE By CHOICE 1st 2nd 285 284 263 FULL FULL 3rd 4th 5th 6th After 6 choices Group Postal District Postal District S1 Posting Exercise For more information, please refer to: http://www.moe.gov.sg/education /admissions/secondary-oneposting/ Direct School Admission (DSA) What is DSA? • An admission exercise to allow participating secondary schools to select some P6 students for admission to Secondary One. • The selection will be based on their achievements and talents BEFORE the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results are released. Direct School Admission (DSA) For more information, please refer to: http://www.moe.gov.sg/education /admissions/dsa-sec/ Choice of Secondary Schools Considerations • Child’s academic performance, talents and interest, special needs • Distance between school and home • Schools (Information Booklet) – – – – School Values, Culture School programmes, Special Programmes/Schemes, CCAs, etc School achievements and awards (FMSS accorded SEA) Distance • Affiliated School – FMSS • Courses in Secondary School Secondary Schools • Government/Government-aided Schools – Mainstream schools – Autonomous schools – Independent schools • Specialised Independent Schools – Singapore Sports School – School of the Arts (SOTA) – NUS High School – School of Science and Technology (SST) Secondary Schools • Vocational Schools • Specialised School for Normal (Technical) Students – Crest Secondary School – Spectra Secondary School • Privately-funded Schools - ACS(I), HCIS, SJII Secondary School Courses • Special / Express: – Takes O level at end of 4th year – Take MT at higher level (Special) • Normal (Academic) – Take N level at end of 4th year – Take O level at end of 5th year / admit to polytechnic foundation prog. / admit to ITE higher Nitec • Normal (Technical) – Take N level at end of 4th year – Admit to ITE Integrated Programme (IP) • Students need not sit for GCE ‘O’ level examination and can move on to JC 1 and 2. • Students will sit for GCE ‘A’ level examination or International Baccalaureate (IB) at Year 6. • Only some schools offer IP (e.g. SJI, RI, MGS, ACS(I), HCI, Dunman High, NJC, etc.) Affiliation to FMS(S) • Must indicate FMSS as first choice in the option form to receive priority for admission • Not all FMS(P) students are admitted to FMSS: – admission to affiliated secondary school is subject to the availability of places – Cut-off point for admission to Express Stream is 200 – Students who obtain an option band of Express and Normal (Acad.) has to opt for Normal (Acad.) in FMS(S) to stand a much higher chance of admission Fairfield Methodist Secondary School Ms Audrey Chen Principal Use MOE enhanced ecareers.sg Portal To help guide your child to select schools 1.
