Big Weekend 2016
Saturday 3rd September
Glasgow
Sponsored by
HAVE PASSION TAKE ACTION
About Alopecia UK
Alopecia UK was started in 2004 by Vicky
Bowdage with the aim of creating a website as
there was a lack of information available on
the internet at that time. Official charitable
status was granted in April 2005. The success
of the website and the support from the
general public has allowed the charity to grow
and we now work to our aims of support,
awareness, research and fundraising with
the overall mission statement of ‘working
to improve the lives of those affected by
alopecia.’
Our Aims
Support - We will provide impartial
information, advice and support to help
people feel less isolated.
Awareness - We will raise awareness to the
general public and healthcare professionals
about alopecia and its psychological impact.
Research - We will support medical and
psychological researchers who aim to find
effective treatments.
Fundraising - We will create a sustainable
funding stream to enable continued growth of
Alopecia UK.
What we do
We meet our aims in a number of different
ways. In the past few years, we have
introduced larger-scale national events, such
as today’s Conference event and tomorrow’s
Treasure Hunt, which have contributed to
our aims around support and awareness.
One thing Alopecia UK has always done well
is to bring people with alopecia together.
Traditionally we have done this via our online
forum and local support groups and now,
additionally, through national events that
bring large numbers of people together for
information, advice, support and awareness.
These events have been instrumental to the
charity’s growth and development and have
1
Introduction to Alopecia UK’s Big Weekend 2016
therefore contributed towards an increase in
the level of support available to those with
alopecia.
We appreciate that those of us with alopecia
can all be at different stages of our journeys
and may want different things from the charity
and the events it offers. We believe our Big
Weekend incorporates a little bit of something
for everyone. Whether it be the longed for
information and advice on treatments and
head wear in those initial stages of alopecia
when you can feel lost; the support gained
in chatting to others when it’s just starting
to feel a little bit tough; or the awarenessraising elements of the weekend which many
use as an opportunity to experience a sense
of freedom with their alopecia, many going
without wigs and head wear in public for the
very first time.
Welcome to Alopecia UK’s Big Weekend.
After months of planning, it’s finally here! This
is the third year for our annual event; after
visiting London and Manchester we wanted to
bring the event to Glasgow to experience the
vibrant and diverse city. We intend for you to
leave here today with a wealth of information
as well as advice, support and various options
for you to consider regards dealing with your
own alopecia, whatever form that might be in.
This booklet is designed to help you get
the most out of the event. You will find
descriptions of all the speakers, workshops,
demonstrations, and exhibitors as well as
where to find them and at what time. You will
not be able to see and do everything so it is
worth taking some time to read through this
event brochure in order that you see and do
the things most relevant to you.
Regardless of where you are on your journey,
we hope you come away from today feeling
informed and knowing that there is a network
of people out there who can support you
on your journey. Alopecia can be a lonely
experience and, without an organisation like
Alopecia UK, it is difficult to find others with a
condition that is so often hidden away.
Workshops
Our workshops require a ticket to attend. You
will have been able to book these ahead of
the day or alternatively you can pick them up
at the Alopecia UK stand. The workshops are
repeated three times throughout the day and
we hope to be able to accommodate all that
wish to attend them.
For too long, alopecia has been a condition
which has been overlooked by many health
professionals and medical researchers.
Alopecia UK may be a small charity but we
have seen fantastic growth over the last few
years as more people feel empowered and get
involved with supporting the charity to grow.
We know that working together, we can be
bigger and stronger. Alopecia UK strives to be
the organisation that you all deserve and, with
your support, we can be just that.
Speakers
We have two rooms with talks in them. The
main room as well as a smaller room with
short talks. These rooms are open access
and you may stay for all or part of talks (don’t
worry the speakers are used to people coming
and going!). We just ask that you leave as
quietly as possible and keep any disturbance
to a minimum if you decide to leave mid-way
through a talk. Please can everyone attend
the Introductory Talk at 10:15 as well as the
Closing Talks at 5pm.
Exhibition Hall
We try to bring together a variety of exhibitors
with a range of information and products
relevant to those with hair loss. It’s a great
opportunity to see, touch and feel, as well
as ask questions about, a huge range of
products. Please take time to wander around
the exhibitor stands.
Raffle
Tickets can be purchased at the Alopecia UK
stand. The raffle will be drawn at the end of
the day at 5:15pm.
Breaks
We’ve got lots of breaks throughout the day to
give you plenty of opportunity to chat to other
attendees and visit the exhibitor stands. A big
part of our events is having the opportunity
to share experiences and stories with others
who have been affected by alopecia, whether
that be parents, partners, or individuals with
alopecia. Please make the most of it and say
hello to people. Many are attending the event
for the first time, either on their own or with a
partner/friend/family member, and in exactly
the same position as you - probably a little bit
nervous and hoping to talk to others!
Lunch and refreshments
Your ticket includes lunch and a series of
refreshment breaks where Tea, Coffee,
Water & snacks will be available, just help
yourself. Food suitable for those with dietary
requirements will be available with signage to
show you where it will be.
We hope you enjoy the day!

Using Mindfulness techniques to live well
with whatever life throws at you!
(by Anne Connolly)
Location: Room 14&15
Maximum Capacity: 45 people per workshop
Mindfulness is a both an ancient and modern
practice for coping with stress, sadness, pain
and misfortune. It is a way of being able
to quieten your mind and release tension
from your body allowing the experience of
being able to create periods of calm and
relaxation, as Professor Mark Williams of
Oxford University describes it – the ability to
“Find Peace in a Frantic World.” Living with
any chronic disease is very stressful and often
once the field of conventional medicine has
made the diagnosis it really doesn’t offer
much on how to go about living your everyday
life with Alopecia. Mindfulness is a practical
coping tool and has been shown to be very
effective, providing tools for coping with dayto-day stress and especially with feelings of
being overwhelmed. Mindfulness is something
you can learn.
In the workshop you will discover what
Mindfulness is, why it is so effective and
what makes it such a powerful practice. How
it is useful in living with Alopecia and the
challenges specific to this disease. Learn, and
experience, simple but effective techniques
that when practiced regularly can have a
powerful influence on your health, well-being
and happiness (as attested by the scientific
and medical evidence that has been gathered
over the last 25 years).

Eylure
KoolKaps – helping people with hair
loss feel confident again
Eylure is the world’s favourite eyelash brand;
we offer you the best selection of eyelashes,
eyebrow products and beauty accessories.
With almost 70 years’ experience in beauty, we
have perfected the creation of easy to wear
lashes in a variety of in-demand styles. Our
most recent creation, the salon-inspired brow
collection, is an unmissable collection of brow
products designed to create a cool, fashionforward finish.
The brand was created in 1947 by two brothers,
David and Eric Aylott, renowned make-up
artists to the British film industry. The brothers
created the product, the modern false lash,
to answer a lack of cosmetic enhancement
in the industry. Spotting the opportunity for
the wider public, the Aylotts created a brand
around their invention and called it Eylure
(from Eye Allure).

Losing hair can be a horrible blow to
confidence and self-esteem. Wigs can help
but sometimes they slip, cause scalp irritation,
making the wearer uncomfortably sweaty. Hair
specialist Simon Beale’s KoolKaps combine
textiles with technology to enhance comfort,
health and protection. Get-a-Grip Technology
enables you to wear a KoolKap discreetly
beneath a wig, scarf or hat, with the unique
weave and stretch holding headwear in place
securely. KoolKaps allow perspiration and
moisture to be drawn from the scalp and
rapidly evaporate, keeping you cool and dry.
De-Odorising Technology absorbs, eliminates
and neutralises odour, leaving headwear
feeling and looking fresh. KoolKaps are
washable and just £14.99 each. Order today on

supplier, we work with Salon Partners across
Scotland, to assist with the choices available
to them.
Hipheadwear
We design and manufacture alternative
headwear for women and children affected
by medical hair loss, all designs are
hypoallergenic, soft and snug fit, easy to tie
and very hip and trendy. We are a National
Health Service and Alopecia UK supplier and
sell via various hospitals throughout the UK
and online.
Mrs Makeup
Mrs Makeup opened its doors in 2013 and has
become one of the most recognisable and
respected clinics for semi-permanent makeup
in the UK. Here at Mrs Makeup we offer a
wide range of semi-permanent treatments as
well as eyebrow correction. We believe that
listening to our client’s needs is paramount
and therefore offer a free consultation prior
to any treatment. We have worked alongside
alopecia clients for a long period of time, and
understand how your body can differ, and
respond differently to having particles placed
underneath the skin. Our in-depth knowledge
of colour theory helps us choose a pigment
that will not limit you to only one look, which
in turn will let you have the freedom to update
your makeup styles, or different colour
wigs that you may decide to purchase in the
future. We are a warm and friendly clinic who
genuinely care.

Parrucche is an NHS contract supplier for wigs
in Scotland based in Glasgow city centre. We
are a boutique dedicated to the supply of all
types of wigs (human hair & synthetic) and
associated products from various wig brands
including Ellen Wille, Jon Renau, Daxbourne
& Trendco among others. We also have a

size or needs cut etc we encourage multiple
visits where needed until our customer is
satisfied. We can also “revamp” older wigs
synthetic or human hair to bring the style back
to nearly new or provide an ‘up do’ or curl for
occasional wear.
Trichology is the science and study of hair and
clinical trichology is defined as the diagnosis
and treatment of diseases and disorders of the
