Big Weekend 2016 Saturday 3rd September Glasgow Sponsored by HAVE PASSION TAKE ACTION About Alopecia UK Alopecia UK was started in 2004 by Vicky Bowdage with the aim of creating a website as there was a lack of information available on the internet at that time. Official charitable status was granted in April 2005. The success of the website and the support from the general public has allowed the charity to grow and we now work to our aims of support, awareness, research and fundraising with the overall mission statement of ‘working to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia.’ Our Aims Support - We will provide impartial information, advice and support to help people feel less isolated. Awareness - We will raise awareness to the general public and healthcare professionals about alopecia and its psychological impact. Research - We will support medical and psychological researchers who aim to find effective treatments. Fundraising - We will create a sustainable funding stream to enable continued growth of Alopecia UK. What we do We meet our aims in a number of different ways. In the past few years, we have introduced larger-scale national events, such as today’s Conference event and tomorrow’s Treasure Hunt, which have contributed to our aims around support and awareness. One thing Alopecia UK has always done well is to bring people with alopecia together. Traditionally we have done this via our online forum and local support groups and now, additionally, through national events that bring large numbers of people together for information, advice, support and awareness. These events have been instrumental to the charity’s growth and development and have 1 Introduction to Alopecia UK’s Big Weekend 2016 therefore contributed towards an increase in the level of support available to those with alopecia. We appreciate that those of us with alopecia can all be at different stages of our journeys and may want different things from the charity and the events it offers. We believe our Big Weekend incorporates a little bit of something for everyone. Whether it be the longed for information and advice on treatments and head wear in those initial stages of alopecia when you can feel lost; the support gained in chatting to others when it’s just starting to feel a little bit tough; or the awarenessraising elements of the weekend which many use as an opportunity to experience a sense of freedom with their alopecia, many going without wigs and head wear in public for the very first time. Welcome to Alopecia UK’s Big Weekend. After months of planning, it’s finally here! This is the third year for our annual event; after visiting London and Manchester we wanted to bring the event to Glasgow to experience the vibrant and diverse city. We intend for you to leave here today with a wealth of information as well as advice, support and various options for you to consider regards dealing with your own alopecia, whatever form that might be in. This booklet is designed to help you get the most out of the event. You will find descriptions of all the speakers, workshops, demonstrations, and exhibitors as well as where to find them and at what time. You will not be able to see and do everything so it is worth taking some time to read through this event brochure in order that you see and do the things most relevant to you. Regardless of where you are on your journey, we hope you come away from today feeling informed and knowing that there is a network of people out there who can support you on your journey. Alopecia can be a lonely experience and, without an organisation like Alopecia UK, it is difficult to find others with a condition that is so often hidden away. Workshops Our workshops require a ticket to attend. You will have been able to book these ahead of the day or alternatively you can pick them up at the Alopecia UK stand. The workshops are repeated three times throughout the day and we hope to be able to accommodate all that wish to attend them. For too long, alopecia has been a condition which has been overlooked by many health professionals and medical researchers. Alopecia UK may be a small charity but we have seen fantastic growth over the last few years as more people feel empowered and get involved with supporting the charity to grow. We know that working together, we can be bigger and stronger. Alopecia UK strives to be the organisation that you all deserve and, with your support, we can be just that. Speakers We have two rooms with talks in them. The main room as well as a smaller room with short talks. These rooms are open access and you may stay for all or part of talks (don’t worry the speakers are used to people coming and going!). We just ask that you leave as quietly as possible and keep any disturbance to a minimum if you decide to leave mid-way through a talk. Please can everyone attend the Introductory Talk at 10:15 as well as the Closing Talks at 5pm. Exhibition Hall We try to bring together a variety of exhibitors with a range of information and products relevant to those with hair loss. It’s a great opportunity to see, touch and feel, as well as ask questions about, a huge range of products. Please take time to wander around the exhibitor stands. Raffle Tickets can be purchased at the Alopecia UK stand. The raffle will be drawn at the end of the day at 5:15pm. Breaks We’ve got lots of breaks throughout the day to give you plenty of opportunity to chat to other attendees and visit the exhibitor stands. A big part of our events is having the opportunity to share experiences and stories with others who have been affected by alopecia, whether that be parents, partners, or individuals with alopecia. Please make the most of it and say hello to people. Many are attending the event for the first time, either on their own or with a partner/friend/family member, and in exactly the same position as you - probably a little bit nervous and hoping to talk to others! Lunch and refreshments Your ticket includes lunch and a series of refreshment breaks where Tea, Coffee, Water & snacks will be available, just help yourself. Food suitable for those with dietary requirements will be available with signage to show you where it will be. We hope you enjoy the day! - The Alopecia UK team HAVE PASSION TAKE ACTION 2 3 Meet the Experts 16.00 - 17.00 Amy Johnson - My Alopecia Story Raffle and Closing Talk 2&3 Main Room 6 Exhibition Hall 7 Short Talks Room Key 1730 1700 1530 1545 1600 1415 1400 1300 Susan Holmes 25 mins JAK inhibitors & research update Jane Boissiere and Gillian Smith 15/20 mins plus 5/10 mins Q’s Hypnosis, Stress & Skin Anita Raman 15/20 mins plus 5/10 mins Q’s Psychological impact of Alopecia Matt Harries 11.45 - 12.20 Treatments for AA plus Q & A 10/15 mins presentation on Treatments plus 20 mins for Q’s Des Tobin 12.30 - 13.00 Role of diet and nutrition with ‘possible’ implications for AA 1145 1230 1245 Abbey MacBeth - Hair Loss PSP 1045 1115 Trendco & Sally Bee Wig Workshop 11.45 - 12.45 Rooms 8&9 Changing Faces Workshop 16.00 - 17.00 Changing Faces Workshop 14.00 - 15.00 Changing Faces Workshop 11.45 - 12.45 Rooms 10& 11 Mindfulness Workshop 16.00 - 17.00 Mindfulness Workshop 14.00 - 15.00 Mindfulness Workshop 11.45 - 12.45 Rooms 14 &15 Evening Dinner & Ceilidh Trendco & Sally Bee Wig Workshop 16.00 - 17.00 Amrit Bhatti 14.00 - 14.10 Trendco & Sally Alopecia from the perspective of close relatives Bee Wig Matt Harries 14.15 - 14.45 Workshop Androgenetic and Scarring alopecias 14.00 - 15.00 plus Q&A Tracey Walker 14.50 - 15.00 Institute of Trichology Jason Saks 15.05 - 15.15 Cosmetics for concealing hair loss Barbara Cameron 15.20 - 15.30 Semi-permanent make-up Simon Beale 15.35 - 15.45 How wigs are made End of Conference part of the Big Weekend (The Dinner will begin at 7pm for those who have booked a ticket.) (by Anne Connolly) Location: Room 14&15 Maximum Capacity: 45 people per workshop Mindfulness is a both an ancient and modern practice for coping with stress, sadness, pain and misfortune. It is a way of being able to quieten your mind and release tension from your body allowing the experience of being able to create periods of calm and relaxation, as Professor Mark Williams of Oxford University describes it – the ability to “Find Peace in a Frantic World.” Living with any chronic disease is very stressful and often once the field of conventional medicine has made the diagnosis it really doesn’t offer much on how to go about living your everyday life with Alopecia. Mindfulness is a practical coping tool and has been shown to be very effective, providing tools for coping with dayto-day stress and especially with feelings of being overwhelmed. Mindfulness is something you can learn. In the workshop you will discover what Mindfulness is, why it is so effective and what makes it such a powerful practice. How it is useful in living with Alopecia and the challenges specific to this disease. Learn, and experience, simple but effective techniques that when practiced regularly can have a powerful influence on your health, well-being and happiness (as attested by the scientific and medical evidence that has been gathered over the last 25 years).
