These last few years the implementation of rigorous working methods and the quality of the work performed have led to a considerable reduction in the time spent at the dock, in spite of the increasing complexity of the task. Today, submarines sail on average 220 days a year. IA M51 programme THE IA M51 PROGRAMME CONSISTS OF MODERNISING THE 3 FRENCH NAVY’S SSBN TO RECOVER THEIR EFFICIENCY AND OPERATE THE NEW BALLISTIC NUCLEAR MISSILE, THE M51. THE VIGILANT WAS THE FIRST TO BE MODERNISED, FOCUS ON THIS MAJOR INDUSTRIAL PROGRAMME. Scope of work After a couple of months spent in the French secret naval base to carry out preparation works, the SSBN got to the Brest naval base by the end of 2011 to be overhauled. More than twenty months to carry out works of overhaul and modernisation and/or adaptation : navigationsystemmodernisation; combatmanagementsystemanddeterringweapons management system modernisation (CESAD); missileslaunchersrefit; completeoverhaultorecoverand/orupgradeits capabilities. Preparation phase and infrastructure modernisation The upstream preparation works and the infrastructures adaptation are parts of a global industrial organisation implemented by DCNS. This is a key aspect to finish the works as scheduled. A successful and ambitious programme involving: 13,5millionhoursofworks; 1,100workers,24/24and6daysaweek; 45industrialpartners; 35,000embeddedmaterials; 14,000visitedmaterialsinworkshops; 140kmofcablestoinstall. This first adaptation on Le Vigilant will allow DCNS to optimise the next operation. The two SSBNs, Le Triomphant and Le Téméraire, modernisation works are expected to be finished by 2018. M51, a new ballistic nuclear missiles generation The M51 missile is the latest technology to replace the M45 SLBM (sea-ground-ballistic missile) of newgeneration SSBNs. It’s a three-stage missile designed to be launched by SSBNs. DCNS 40-42, rue du Docteur Finlay F-75732 Paris Cedex 15 +33 (0)1 40 59 50 00 www.dcnsgroup.com – Photo credits: DCNS/J-P. Mesguen, G.
