A Story Waiting to be Told...

WELCOME TO WIGTOWN, where books are our
passion and our business. You’ll find 30 book
related businesses in Wigtown and our sister
villages of Bladnoch and Kirkinner. Whether
you’re interested in Scottish and Irish writing
or English literature; antiquarian and
illustrated books; rare and unusual literature;
first editions and collectables; special interest
or children's books, you’re sure to find
something to tempt you in Wigtown.
The name Wigtown comes from the Germanic
language ‘Town or port on the bay’,
immensely appropriate given the town
position overlooking Wigtown Bay and the
first crossing over the river Cree which made it
a place of strategic and commercial
importance. Recognised in 1341 as the ‘chief
town’ of the Earldom and county of Wigtown
its burgh charter dates back to probably that
time rather than the first written record of
1457.
Wigtown is also home to bookbinders and
publishers, the largest traditional second
hand bookshop in Scotland, the printer of the
smallest books in the world and the world
renowned Historic Newspapers, where you
can find out what was making headlines on
the day you were born.
Wigtown is a town that also knows how to
enjoy itself and is developing a growing
reputation in the Scottish Festival calendar. In
2004 we have a very special programme of
events which starts in May when Wigtown
plays host to the fourth International Festival
of Book Towns - a three day event that
celebrates the growing number of Book Towns
stretching from America to Australasia and
supported by what promises to be Scotland`s
largest rural Book Fair with up to 100
booksellers from throughout the UK. Then we
have the annual Galloway Food Festival, the
summer Community Festival in July, the sixth
annual Literary Festival in September which
for the first time will span two weekends, the
third Scottish AstroFest in November and
finally our festive celebrations with Winterfest
in the run up to Christmas. So get your diaries
out and make sure you have these key dates
set aside in 2004.
Here in Wigtown we take a more relaxed view
of life and we invite you to sample our
hospitality. Meandering along roads in the
heart of the Galloway countryside, the scenic
journey here is just what you need to unwind,
cast off the pressures of city life, slow down,
relax and be reminded of what quality of life is
really about. We look forward to meeting you,

Wigtown benefited commercially from its
harbour-busy with coastal rather than foreign
trade and its fairs and markets made it the
main service town to the local agricultural
community. It also levied dues on the
movement of livestock and wool crossing the
Cree-exercised through and into the 19th
Century and was even applied to livestock
travelling by rail to Stranraer. However the
growth in rail transportation and the
development of the combustion engine
relegated Wigtown to the periphery of the
communications network and its trade and
prosperity suffered. During the 20th century
it also ceased to be the centre of
administration and justice and by the late
80’s and early 90’s respectively it had also
lost its two key employers-the Co- operative
Creamery and Bladnoch Distillery. These
were difficult times for this proud little town
and a new idea was desperately required as
it headed towards the end of the century and
into the new millennium.
Wigtown’s new position as Scotland’s
National Book Town is therefore a key factor
in restoring some of that former glory and
economic activity and now five years into its
life we are beginning to see many promising
signs of recovery. New inward investment
continues - public and private sector, and
visitor interest in the Book Town continues to
grow. In 2004 Wigtown Book Town will play
host to the International Book Town Festival a fitting occasion to celebrate the five years
that will have elapsed since the Scottish
Parliament first proclaimed Wigtown Scotland’s National Book Town.

Other events that run through the year include;
Wigtown Street Markets (twice per month) from Easter through to October
with the focus on local produce and value for money.
The Eccentric Alphabet – A weekly programme of readings and talks by
invited guests hosted by Wigtown’s Book Shops. Each week a subject will
be selected with a letter of the alphabet to head the subject i.e. W for
Whisky. The readings start at 7pm and last for around 1 hour. Tickets cost
£2 and can be reserved via the Book Town Office on 01988 402036 or
purchased at the door. The Book Town website will carry full event details

The International Book Fair and Book Town Festival
hosted by Wigtown - Scotland's National Book Town
An international celebration of the rapidly expanding international Book Town
network and second hand book selling stretching from America through Europe and
as far as Australasia. Scotland’s Book Town will be host to representatives from
over twenty Book Towns and will hold its first annual Book Fair with a forecasted
figure of 70 plus book dealers from throughout the UK represented. A haven for
book lovers throughout the year - Wigtown will become a veritable cornucopia of
books for these three Festival days in May 2004.

The Sixth Annual Wigtown Literary Festival

Now into its sixth year the Wigtown Literary Festival has come of age and in 2004
we welcome back many of our writer friends who have supported this intimate,
friendly, and very Scottish Literary Festival during its formative years. With its
idyllic location in the Machars of south west of Scotland - Wigtown offers a unique
and inspirational setting for this annual feast of literary talent and fiction or
fantasy, history or romance, travel or high adventure, thrillers or political intrigue,
the 2004 Festival will not disappoint. Keep a close eye on our web site for
