CLONDALKIN.
CLONDALKIN, an inland parish and village, partly in Newcastle, but chiefly in tfppercross barony, Dublin

- n, comprising an area of 4,777 acres, of which 44- are in the village. Population,
""1 houses. I t is situated near the ninth lock of the Grand Canal, and close to
Western Railway, of which it is the first station from Dublin. I t was ancientl v
nanied Cluain-Dolcan, and by the Danes Dun-awley. The village consists chiefly of one irregular street, of small
but neatly built houses and cottages. Ths only public buildings are the Parish Church, a small plain modern
building, and a neat Roman Catholic Church. It has Almshouses for destitute widows, a Dorcas Institution,
Lying-in Hospital, and Dispensary, a Parochial and two National Schools, and a Constabulary Police Station.
The ancient round tower is the nearest structure of the kind to the metropolis, and is in good preservation. I t
stands 100 feet high, and is 15 feet in diameter, covered with a conical roof of stone.

-ppercross barony, and comprises an area of 185 acres. Population 863, inhabiting 132 houses. The
lurch of St. Philip, which has recently been erected, is situate at Temple-road, Ratlmiines, adjoining t h «
iiiltowii railway station. There is a small Roman Catholic Church. The Parish Church is situate a * Si

w h i c h is u n d e r a splendid G o t h i c p o r c h , is defended b y t w o circular t o w e r s . T h e g r a n d h a l l is rooted with
r i c h l y - c a r v e d ancient I r i s h o a k , l i g h t e d by t h r e e large w i n d o w s , w i t h a gallery a t t h e e n d .

s p l e n d i d a p a r t m e n t s t h e C a s t l e c o n t a i n s , t h e most curious is t h a t called t h e " " oak c h a m b e r , ' 1 ceiled a n d wainscottd
w i t h richly-carved o a k , i n c o m p a r t m e n t s , c o n t a i n i n g s c r i p t u r a l devices, a n d l i g h t e d w i t h a p o i n t e d window o

RATHFARNHAM.
RATHFARNHAM, a parish and village in Uppercross and Rathdown baronies, Dublin county, four miles south
from the General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 2,5o i acres. Population, 5,555. It is situated on the
road to Whitecliurch, and near where the Military-road commences that crosses the mountains into Wicklow
also at Firhouse a Carmelite Convent, also a Dispensary, a Petty Sessions Court-house, and District Constabulary
Police Station. A fair is held on July 10. The bridge of Rathfarnham, over the river Dodder, is several hundred yards from the village, the approach to which is rising ground, thickly shaded in summer by the trees of
the demesnes on each side. The neighbourhood abounds in pretty seats and villas, commanding rich views
of the Dublin mountains and bay. The castle of Rathfarnham was built by Archbishop Loftus in the reign of
Elizabeth. One of the entrances to the demesne, fronting the Dodder, is in the style of a Roman triumphal arch.
The entrance to the castle is by a portico of eight Doric columns that support a dome painted in fresco with the signs
of the zodiac. Ballyboden, a village in the parish of Whitecliurch, is about one and a quarter miles farther ou,
and comprises an area of two acres. Population, 252.

TALLAGHT.
TALL AG HT, an inland town and parish in Uppereross barony, Dublin county, seven miles S. W. by W. from Dablin,
comprising an area of 21,868 acres. Population of parish, 4,921 ; of town, 312, inhabiting 57 houses. The
town is situated on the road to Blessington, and the parish extends from Balrothery hill on the river Dodder,
to the Green hills at its western extremity. The southern portion forms the range called the Tallaght IIills,
and commands magnificent views of the bay and vale of Dublin. The church, a little above the town, dedicated
to St. Maelrune, is a modern building in the pointed style. At Firhouse there is a convent of Discalced
Carmelites, and at Mount Anne a small monastery of the same order, and a Priory of the Dominican order at
St. Mary's. In the town there is a Dispensary, and there are National and Parochial Schools. I t is a Constabulary Police station, and Petty Sessions are held every alternate Wednesday. There are several paper
and Hour mills in the parish.
