We are very proud of our community and hope that you will enjoy learning about Fox Lake. We strive to provide a clean, healthy, and safe environment and are committed to preserving an exceptional quality of life for everyone who visits. If you are staying in our community, either temporarily or permanently, I hope you will have an opportunity to take advantage of your favorite water sport on the lake or at our aquatic center, golfing at the 18-hole Fox Lake Golf Club, dining at one of our restaurants, enjoying one of our beautiful parks or library, or shopping at our many downtown businesses. If you have any questions about the Fox Lake area, feel free to stop in at City Hall, and one of our friendly staff members will be happy to answer those for you. Sincerely, Mayor Tom Bednarek (920) 928-2280 www.cityoffoxlake.org A Welcome from Town Chairperson Tom Wissing We would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to the Town of Fox Lake and our neighbor, the City of Fox Lake. The Town of Fox Lake was the first area in Dodge County settled by Europeans, beginning with the 1838 log cabin built by Jacob P. Brower, whose location is still noted today along County Highway F. We would like to invite you to enjoy our extraordinary natural resources including Fox Lake and Lake Emily and the scenic environs of our town including drives along Chief Kuno Trail, Howard Drive, Blackhawk Trail, Indian Point Road, and Lake Drive. You can enjoy some time for relaxation and enjoy such activities as boating and fishing, swimming and other water sport activities. While you are visiting, please don’t forget to stop in at one of our fine establishments along Fox Lake such as Hayes Resort, Boat House Pub & Eatery, The Shores of Fox Lake, Fox Lake Golf Club, or Schaumburg’s Supper Club along scenic Lake Emily. In the city you can visit the famous Mullin’s Drive-In, which has been established for over 75 years, and other excellent restaurants. We would like to invite you to visit one of the best-kept secrets in Wisconsin. Sincerely, Town of Fox Lake Chairman Thomas Wissing www.townoffoxlake.org A Welcome from Chamber President Tim Nehls It is with great pride that I welcome you to the greater Fox Lake area. The Fox Lake community offers its residents and guests more parks than many far larger localities. Here is a list of parks in Fox Lake. Adams Spring Park, located on Highway 33 on the south end of the city, Adams Spring Park features a memorial to Bunny Berigan, a famous jazz trumpeter from Fox Lake who performed with some of the best bands of yesteryear. Clausen Park, located on the north end of the City of Fox Lake, Clausen Park features a 60-foot-tall Memorial Tower, donated to the city by Leon Clausen in 1955. Public restrooms are at the base of the tower. Clausen Park is the site of the annual Memorial Day Observances, as well as other activities. Firemans Park, Firemans Park offers baseball diamonds, as well as volleyball and basketball courts. It is located adjacent to the City of Fox Lake offices, fire department, police department and community center. Fox Lake Aquatic Park, Fox Lake Aquatic Park is located just east of the Fox Lake Community Center and features pools to keep kids and adults cool on those hot summer days. John ‘Red’ Solis Memorial Park, John ‘Red’ Solis Memorial Park is the newest addition on the west end of the city and is located on Forest Street in the City of Fox Lake. Get your children some exercise on colorful playground equipment Riverside Park, Riverside Park is immediately west of Clausen Park. It features a large playground, BBQ grills, and a shelter for picnickers and other guests. It also has a public boat launch, with parking for vehicles, as well as a handicap-accessible pier for fishing. It is the location for the Concerts in the Park series of live music events during the summer months. Town Park, Town Park is located between Blackhawk Trail and the northwest corner of the lake, in the Town of Fox Lake. It has a handicap-accessible pier, public access for boating, and a shelter with restrooms. Veterans Memorial Park, Veterans Memorial Park is a small park on the corner of College and State streets in the City of Fox Lake. It was constructed in 2002 to honor all area veterans. West Crocker Street Park, West Crocker Street Park is in the center of the city and has a newly-built 1/2 basketball court in addition to playground equipment and a softball area. Fox Lake Loop Walking Trail In the summer of 2003 the City of Fox Lake Beautification Committee made a dream become a reality by turning the old railroad loop into a walking trail from the Depot to Fox Lake Junction. The loop is approximately one mile long using the route through Fox Lake when the railroad company created it to bring the railroad line to town. It was used until the 1960s by Fox Lake. By 2006, a prairie garden, other gardens, and several trees were planted next to the walking trail. Signage and two gated arbors on the Trenton Street entrance were also installed. Walkers can enter the trail at any point; however, the Depot Railroad Museum on Cordelia Street is considered the beginning of the trail. Any season—winter, spring, summer and fall—just look for signage and enjoy a hike on the Fox Lake Loop Walking Trail. Abundant fish include perch, crappies, blue gills, muskie, northern, walleye and bass. Fishing is a year-round sport in Fox Lake, whether it happens from boats, docks, or public piers at the Town of Fox Lake Park/Boat Launch on Blackhawk Trail or the City of Fox Lake Clausen-Riverside Park/Boat Launch. Winter ice doesn’t stop us either. Ice fishing is alive and well! The aeration system, installed in 1970, is still keeping the lake from completely freezing, allowing for healthy year-round fishing. You may pick up a map of Fox Lake, courtesy of the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce, at area resorts and businesses. Fox Lake isn’t the only lake, either. Lake Emily is just northwest of Fox Lake and Beaver Dam is just south. Each have public launches. Fox Lake Preservation Organization Fish Stocking on Fox Lake To promote the recreational use of Fox Lake for fishing, the Fox Lake Preservation Organization (FLPO) in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continues to commit itself to an extensive yearly fish-stocking program. In early spring 2014, the FLPO released 800 northern into the ice-laden waters of Fox Lake. In late September, FLPO’s dedicated volunteers completed the 2014 fish-stocking program, releasing 300 walleyes, 4,230 perch, 150 muskies and 200 northern. The 2014 total investment in stocking Fox Lake was $8,200. The success of the annual fish-stocking program is made possible by fundraising events, donations, and FLPO membership dues. The generous financial support and the time and effort of volunteers assure that Fox Lake remains a top-rated fishing lake. Mill Creek and the Mill Creek Dam Mill Creek is a canoeing and kayaking dream. You will hear nature’s sounds and observe some of the most interesting wildlife imaginable. Of course, slow pontoon rides have become quite popular, too. Whatever your pleasure, this spot will be a relaxing place for a picnic and an amazing area for children to discover and enjoy. The Mill Creek Dam is also a favorite spot for fishing throughout the entire spring and summer. Located at the end of Mill Street, this dam controls water flow from Fox Lake to neighboring Beaver Dam Lake. The Mill Creek Restoration project provides a handicap fishing and picnicking area with a handicap-accessible table by Riverside Park. For more information regarding the Mill Creek Restoration project, call the Fox Lake City Hall at (920) 928-2280. Hunting in the Fox Lake Area Each fall, deer hunters gather in and around Fox Lake in Dodge County to take home that special trophy. Many public hunting areas are available. Registration is at the Fox Lake Legion beginning at 5:00 a.m. Fisheree time is 7:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. at the Boat House Pub and Eatery launch. Raffles, silent auction, door prizes, and bucket raffles begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Legion. Cash prizes in all fish categories for children and adults begin at 4:00 p.m. A separate “special items” pre-raffle is available. Food and beverages will be served beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Legion. Full menu and beverages will be available at the Boat House beginning at 11:00 a.m. The mission of the fisheree will be to provide funds that will allow the Legion to help local veterans. This year the money will mainly go toward the following causes: Honor Flight for Vets to Washington, D.C. and a guided fishing trip for a local disabled veteran. The Fox Lake Legion is asking for donations of materials or money that will help them achieve their goals. Please contact Dave DePrey at (920) 296-0098 or the Fox Lake Legion at (920) 928-2381 for additional information or to make a donation. 2nd Annual Fish Tales Bait & Liquor Winter Jamboree The 2nd Annual Fish Tales Bait & Liquor Winter Jamboree event will take place February 20–22. A large 40’ x 80’ heated tent will be set up off the Town Park on Blackhawk Trail. Again this year there will be live music, a beer stand, and food. To be in the fishing contest, you must pre-register at Fish Tales Bait Shop located at 529 West State St. or call (920) 520-0015. This is one of the largest fisherees in the area. Three years ago there was a Saturday in February without an event at the Boat House. They came up with the idea of a charity fisheree for a group, individual, association, etc. that would benefit from the money raised from the fisheree. This year the 4th annual Fox Lake Local Charities Fisheree will be held on Saturday, February 28. The fisheree will run from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. It will be held at the Boat House Pub and Eatery, N10575 Chief Kuno Trail. There will be prizes for the largest fish caught in six different categories: walleye, northern, perch, crappie, blue gill and bass—for adults and children alike. Raffles, door prizes, silent auctions, and a full menu will all be available beginning at 11:00. Please contact the Boat House at (920) 928-3470 for additional information or if you would like to have a group, individual, association, etc. considered as the charity recipient. Fish Tales Bait & Liquor 5th Annual Walleye Tournament This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2015 beginning at 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Fish Tales Bait & Liquor, 529 West State St., Fox Lake. Payouts will be for the weight of the total fish caught by the two-man teams. Register at Fish Tales by calling (920) 520-0015. Weigh-ins and payouts are at Fish Tales. Page 12 • Fox Lake Visitors Guide 2015 Fisherees / Jazz Jubilee Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce Ice Fisheree Fox Lake Fire Department Fisheree Eleven years ago, the Fox Lake Chamber decided to bring back its Annual Ice Fisheree. Hosted at the Boat House Pub & Eatery by Vicki Matheys, the 2015 event will be held on Saturday, January 31, starting at 6:00 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m. There’s a full day for catching the many fish available in Fox Lake and chances to win prizes for the largest fish in any of the legal categories. Not into winter sports? All afternoon, those who prefer the indoors have a chance to participate in the silent auction and the many raffles put on by the Chamber. All award-winning fish entries are announced and prizes are awarded at 4:00 p.m., along with an invitation to stay into the evening to enjoy some musical entertainment. The Fox Lake Fire Department’s winter fisheree is currently scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2015. The fisheree will launch from the Boat House Chief Kuno Trail at 6:00 a.m. and will run until 3:00 p.m. Drawing for a special prize will occur at 4 p.m. at N10575 Chief Kuno Trail, (920) 928-3470. The fisheree is open to the general public with an entry fee of $10 per person. Prizes will be awarded for fish in all categories, including for kids ages 12 years and younger. Concessions will be available, weather permitting, and delivery service will be available to fisheree participants on the ice. Door prizes will also be awarded in addition to raffles and a silent auction that will be taking place all day long. Proceeds from the fisheree will go to support the Fox Lake Fire Department and EMS. Questions about the fisheree can be directed to Richie Quirk at (920) 319-2241. Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee Enjoy a weekend full of jazz music from all over the nation Fox Lake holds a three-day salute to “Bunny” Berigan on May 15–17, 2015 when it kicks off one of the best Dixieland Jazz/Swing events in the United States. Yes, the town is small––actually not much bigger then 108 years ago when “Bunny” was born––but the Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee is a gem in the realm of jazz festivals from coast to coast. This year the Jazz Jubilee pulls in some of the fantastic musicians from around Wisconsin, such as Rev. Al Townsend leading the Bunny Berigan Memorial Band. Plus, it brings home Wisconsinites such as Bob Schulz and Bob Hirsch, both living in California. Then there are the St. Louis Stompers, led by Steve Lilley, who will play the whole weekend in Fox Lake. Plus, the Red Hot Dixie band led by Jack Trowbridge, the Kay Berigan 5 Tet, and the Barb City Stompers led by John Skillman. Many other excellent musicians will arrive in Fox Lake for this wonderful weekend in May. Just a month after Bunny Berigan’s death in 1942, one of the nation’s leading Jazz critics prophesied, “One of these years they are going to start talking about “Bunny” Berigan. They are going to rave about his trumpeting feats, they are going to dig out his records, and they are going to play them for the next generation, pointing out passages to prove that “Bunny” was one of the true greats of all Jazz.” The critic was right and in 2015, 73 years after “Bunny’s” death, the event is planned, honoring him and the music he played. Hoping to pass the music to the next generation, the Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee welcomes youth 18 and younger into the Jubilee free of charge. This year the event is held at three venues: the Fox Lake Community Center, the American Legion Hall in downtown Fox Lake and Mullin’s Drive-In. There is something about being in Fox Lake, the home of the man who was nationally billed in his bookings around the nation as the “Miracle Man of Swing.” “Bunny” played with a kind of reckless abandonment but with great improvisation. His playing was spontaneous, and he communicated with the audience—with a tone that was rich. His vibrato on just a single note was enough to convey that feeling of surging, forward momentum that is the essence of swing. Mark Gossink of Fox Lake put together a booklet on “Bunny” in 1974 where he included a quote that jazz fans from all over the world know: “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.” And “Bunny” had that swing. Fine food will be served at the Community Center, plus all restaurants, bars, and Mullin’s Drive-In will be serving food all weekend. Further information can be obtained about the Jazz Jubilee by calling Julie Flemming at (920) 928-6094. Friends of the Lake Outing The Fox Lake Preservation Organization (FLPO) invites special needs adults and chaperons to be their guests for pontoon boat tours and fishing excursions on Fox Lake. Snacks and beverages are provided onboard. After several hours of fishing or touring the lake, the guests return to shore for a cook-out lunch. Held for 23 years, traditionally on the last Saturday in June, the Friends of the Lake Outing has become the popular social event for the friends from ARC of Dodge County and Bethesda Lutheran Home in Fox Lake. It takes many volunteers—pontoon boat captains and “mates,” cooks, servers and dockside attendants—to make the outing a memorable experience for guests. For further information, please call Bob Bergmann at (920) 928-3486. Memorial Day, May 25, 2015 The Fox Lake American Legion Post 521 annually leads a Memorial Day parade and memorial service to honor those who have died to defend our freedoms. The start time will be announced as plans are set. Food and refreshments will be served. Bring your family and friends, a lawn chair or a blanket. One of the area’s best fireworks displays begins at dusk. Come by car or boat. The fireworks on the lake pack a double whammy as the fireworks explode in the sky and then reflect on the water. Riverside Park and the public boat launch area at Riverside Park offer excellent viewing. The west and north shores of the lake also offer great viewing opportunities. Many people board boats and go out to the “small” lake to watch the show. When the fireworks come to an end, stick around and watch the parade on the lake as all the lighted boats head for home. The alternative rain date for fireworks is Sunday, July 5. Page 20 • Fox Lake Visitors Guide 2015 Events Concerts in the Park The summer months in Fox Lake also mean Saturday night concerts presented by the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce. The 2015 concert series will host one free concert in Riverside Park in the City of Fox Lake on Saturday evening, July 4. The specific time will be announced. Go north off State Street on N. College Avenue toward the golf club. Concerts in the Park are held on the left-side shelter/park area, or come by boat on Mill Creek. Another free concert will be held in the Town of Fox Lake Shelter on Saturday evening, September 5. Take Blackhawk Drive off Highway A. The shelter is on the south side, or come by boat on Fox Lake. Food and beverages will be available. Bring your family and friends, a lawn chair or a blanket, and get ready to enjoy the night’s free concert. Contact (920) 928-3777 for more information. 5th Annual Fall ‘Spooktacular’ Event Only four years ago, the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce, along with other business owners, hosted the very first Fall “Spooktacular” Event in downtown Fox Lake. It was a huge success! Just some of the activities included a pumpkin-carving contest, popcorn wagon, face painting, children’s costume contest, pet costume contest, Klancy the Klown making his famous balloon animals, Fox Lake Lions Brat Fry, fire trucks, flea market, drawings for prizes, candy treats galore, free Halloween tattoos, scary displays with real tarantulas, numerous food vendors and an all-you-can-eat waffle breakfast. Along with all these events, the chamber also sponsored a scarecrow contest for businesses and non-profit organizations and had the main street lined up with numerous scarecrows for decoration and fun! Many of the downtown businesses were spookily decorated for the event as well. In 2015, the Fall “Spooktacular” Event will be held Saturday, October 31 (Halloween) from noon until 3 p.m. Citywide trick or treating will also take place on that day, making it an especially great family day to spend in downtown Fox Lake. Take a walk through the cemetery and “meet” some of Fox Lake’s former residents in the evening, weather permitting. The Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce is always looking for vendors, groups and local businesses to display and share their wares, as well as zombies and ghouls to walk the streets! 11th Annual December to Remember Sponsored by the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce Fox Lake welcomes you to the traditional celebrations of the December to Remember event located in downtown Fox Lake on Saturday, December 12, sponsored by the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce. This event is free and open to the public. Starting at noon, this event is sure to provide fun for the whole family. The event includes all of these fun activities: hair styles, cookie and cupcake decorating, ornament painting, a coloring contest and other festive activities. The majority of the day is focused on fun and free events for children of all ages. Visit Santa and his Christmas friends, and be sure to bring a camera. Adults can enjoy shopping, raffles, silent auctions, and delicious bake sale items. Lunch is available for purchase. Following the day’s festivities, the evening parade of lights begins at 5 p.m. Following the parade, Santa will hand out candy to all the children. Enjoy school band performances and local carolers spreading the holiday cheer. The City of Fox Lake will provide a free dinner to the community. Bring a non-perishable food item for our food pantry. For more information, visit the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce for a schedule of events, to volunteer, and to submit float entries. Ducks Unlimited—Two Lakes Chapter Ducks Unlimited (DU), the original “unlimited,” is a conservation organization dedicated to conserving wetlands and associated habitat for the benefit of waterfowl with subsequent benefits to other wildlife and people. Over 900 species of birds, fish, amphibians and mammals benefit from these efforts. Ducks Unlimited has conserved over 100,000 acres in the state of Wisconsin alone. DU was founded in 1937 by sportsmen who recognized that conserving wetlands helps to ensure the future of waterfowl populations. Today, DU is strongly supported by both hunters and non-hunters who recognized the many benefits associated with the habitat conservation program. These traditions have been carried on locally by the Two Lakes Chapter of Ducks Unlimited since 1985. To support this effort, Two Lakes DU has a fundraising activity each year. The event is a Mardi Gras Party, held during the Mardi Gras season—a fun time during the winter. This year’s Mardi Gras Party will be held on Monday, February 16, 2015 at Schaumburg Supper Club. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. The public is invited and welcome to attend this event. It is not necessary to be a Ducks Unlimited member to attend. Depending upon the interest shown by local and visiting sportsmen, a summer event may also be held. For additional information on either of these events, call Ron at (920) 928-2482 or Dave at (920) 928-3348. Library book bags that can be checked out by patrons were purchased by the Friends. The biggest endeavor is the Annual Book Sale. Items withdrawn from the library, together with donated items, are sold for a nominal amount at the sale. Donated books can be brought to the library any time during the year and will be stored until the next sale. Please, no reference books, condensed Reader’s Digest books, or magazines. In 2015 the book sale will be at the Community Center, 248 East State Street, Fox Lake, on Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17. Volunteer to help set up or work at the sale. Your help is always needed and appreciated. Call the library at (920) 928-3223 for more information. Fox Lake Visitors Guide 2015 • Page 23 History Fox Lake History Fox Lake’s settlement history dates back to approximately 10,000 years before the white man came here. It was a fertile place and the Native Americans favored the lake for good hunting, fertile cropland, easy living, and as a gathering spot. With Jacob P. Brower came the era of recorded history in Fox Lake, and by all accounts it was a peaceful transition. The name of the city changed three times in the early years: Frankfurt in 1839, Waushara in 1840, and finally Fox Lake in 1856. In 1860 at the beginning of the Civil War, the community had a population of 2,643, with nearly 2,000 individuals being residents of the Village proper. The community contributed greatly to the fight for the Union, sending three full companies to famous duty, including the Iron Brigade and the Eagle Regiment, as well as 20% of Berdan’s Sharpshooters, and numerous individual regimental volunteers. Fox Lake men were present at most eastern theater battles from Bull Run to Appomattox. Riverside Cemetery is the final resting place of war veterans from the War of 1812 through current conflicts and all in between, as well as the rejected lover of Florence Nightingale. Fox Lake has the oldest wood-framed building in Dodge County. Fox Lake had a marine US mail route, was along the Military Road and hosted the first Wisconsin school for women, the Wisconsin Female Academy, later known as Downer College. Harriett R. O’Connell Historical Room Preserving this rich history in the written word and photograph is the O’Connell Historical Room in the basement of the Public Library. The room has been cited by members of the Wisconsin State Historical Society as “the largest collection of small town history in the state.” The collection consists of the very first land office registration book for the region, to previous issues of Fox Lake Representative newspaper and all other important printed word in between. Thanks to an army of volunteers and donors, this information is being cataloged, cared for, and preserved for future generations. Access to the information may be gained by calling the library at (920) 928-3223 and setting up an appointment to review the records during normal library hours. Fox Lake Historical Society All non-written history is on display at the Fox Lake Historical Society in the many buildings they operate for the community. The Society is responsible for the preservation of the Fox Lake Depot building, which houses the main society displays, as well as the Car Shed. The Car Shed houses a 1940s-era Fairbanks gas-engine-powered track car, the summer kitchen, working blacksmith shop, and Sinclair Gas Station building on the Depot grounds. It also operates the Community Congregational Museum up the street from the Depot grounds, which is one of the first churches in town being built in 1855 and was the longest running continuous church. It held its final service in October of 2012. Housed are items related to the theme of each building as well as farming and local business artifacts, Native American arrowheads, tools, weapons, military uniforms and equipment, an extraordinary Civil War artifact collection, a Bunny Berrigan collection dedicated to the famous jazz musician, and photographs of the people, places, buildings, and businesses that made Fox Lake what it is today. The Depot Museum is open the first and third Sunday of every month from June to the first Sunday in October, as well as by appointment. Call (920) 2960254. The church is open for special events or by appointment only.
