O ne month before eight-year-old Tyrone arrived at Camp Homeward Bound, he moved with his mother to a domestic violence shelter to escape his abusive father. Tyrone felt a heavy burden for such a little boy, often asking counselors for permission to call his mother from camp to make sure she was safe. At such a young age, he now believed that he was the man of the family and had to act as such instead of being occupied with the activities of camp. Coalition counselors worked with Tyrone and soon he was able to relax and just have fun. Tyrone loved swimming in the lake and was a star performer in the annual talent show. The Coalition was able to provide a safe place for Tyrone, a place where he could act like the child he is. Tyrone thrived academically, socially, and emotionally at Camp Homeward Bound. He returned to his mother with newfound confidence and a renewed sense of hope for the future. The Coalition continues to fight on behalf of more and more families with small children who are told by the City that they will have to fend for themselves on the streets. ilies New York fam 70 per 0. must earn $2 0 per year hour or $55,00 bedroom to afford a twoapartment. York City millions coalitionforthehomeless.org Myth: Homelessness has declined dramatically in recent years. M aria is a recovering crack addict. It now seems like a lifetime ago, but she used to sleep in a cardboard box on the street in front of Macy’s in Midtown. Maria knew she had hit rock bottom the day she sold her 8-year-old daughter’s Barbie dolls to pay for her drug habit. It was then that Maria turned to the Coalition for help. Our case manager referred her to a rehabilitation program, and once she got sober, she enrolled in the Coalition’s First Step Job Training Program. Maria excelled in the class, learning how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet. She also received support from her fellow classmates who could relate to her struggle of living on the streets. Maria’s self-confidence grew through consistent mentoring from her job coach, and before long, she had on-the-job experience from her internship. “First Step changed my life,” she says. For three years Maria has been successfully employed and has created a comfortable and safe home for her daughter on Staten Island. The City’s rental assistance program—Housing Stability Plus—does not allow formerly homeless men and women to work, despite a sharp decrease in the stipend every year. The Coalition successfully advocated for the Bloomberg Administration to reform the program, so homeless people are encouraged to work and be assured of a roof over their heads. : y t i l a Re n o i t a l u p o p r e t l e h s s s e l e m o h y t i C r e k r p o e Y l p w o e e p N e 0 0 1 Th , 1 2 m o r f – t n e c r e p 5 6 y b d e s . a 7 e 0 r 0 c 2 n i l i s r a p h A n i 0 0 2 , 5 3 o t 8 9 9 1 n night i e alition’s frontlin o C e h T ! g in rm are ala ay. Nothing T wenty-year-old Sarah applied for emergency shelter, cradling Shaun, her two-year-old son, in her arms. In a state of panic, she was trying to escape Shaun’s father, who had physically abused and threatened to kill her repeatedly. Obviously, living with him was out of the question. Sarah’s sister allowed her to stay with her for a few nights, but then asked her to leave because Shaun’s father started threatening her own children. Shockingly, when Sarah applied for emergency shelter at a city office, her application was denied. She begged a friend to take them in, but after two days with nine people crowded into a two-bedroom apartment, mother and child were out on their own again. Sarah returned to the shelter office begging for help—very clearly repeating to workers that she had nowhere to stay and feared for her life. Once again she was told to leave. But fortunately, a Coalition staff member and Legal Aid Society lawyer were standing nearby on that rainy evening. We took Sarah and Shaun to a motel to keep them safe while we drafted court papers to allow them into the shelter system. Our efforts worked, and Sarah and Shaun found shelter. The Coalition’s landmark case, Callahan v. Carey, preserves the right to shelter in New York City for thousands of homeless people. Our advocacy department protects this right and prevents vulnerable men, women, and children from unfair shelter denials and evictions. really works. : y t i l a Re . s n o i t u l o s e There ar d n e o t s k r o w n o i t i l a o C The . y a d y r e v e s s e n s s e l e m o h riety Housing in a va key— of forms is the able including afford milies housing for fa s, and and individual pport housing with su ose with services for th mental illness. takes The Coalition , dynamic comprehensive e crisis of steps to end th From our homelessness. programs direct service than that help more y to da a 3,500 people arch, and advocacy, rese no wonlegislation, it’s lition der that the Coa ganizais the “go-to” or ers, tion for lawmak d New news media, an e. B efore joining the Coalition Houses community, for nearly a decade, Jeff lived and slept in parks, church steps, sidewalks, storefronts, and waterfronts. He received meals from different church groups and from the Coalition’s mobile soup kitchen. Only three months have passed since Jeff moved into Coalition Houses, but already his life has been completely transformed. “People who live here have a sense of caring for each other,” he explains. “We’ve all been on the streets and had a hard time, and we don’t want to end up there again.” For years Jeff participated in the Coalition’s advocacy rallies and came into our offices when he needed extra assistance with food and clothing. He admits, however, that he never realized the Coalition could help him get off the streets. “When I met the Coalition,” he says, “I knew they were fighters, but I thought housing would be too complicated. I knew they could help with food, but I didn’t know they’d be able to do this.” After so many years of living on the streets, Jeff now has a place that he can call his own. “Since I have a place to live now, I can splurge a little. I can go to the dinners at churches and high schools without all the excess baggage. When I meet people there, and they ask where I live, I can tell them. I’m on a new journey now,” he continues. “I’ve got a bed and a phone, and I know these fantastic people. I can’t wait to show people the new me.” The Coalition effectively advocates for more affordable and supportive housing apartments in New York City. We spearheaded campaigns to secure well over $1 billion in state and city funds to house homeless New Yorkers. I can’t make a difference. : y t i l a e R . e c n e r e f f i d a e k a m N A C y l e t u l o s b You a and families are ls a u id iv d in s s ele much-needed The lives of hom h g u ro th y a d ry cted eve g profoundly affe ms, and ongoin ra g ro p r e te n lu o rt, v te or financial suppo d at the corpora e lv o v in t e G . s g a donation, in k advocacy effort a m , e m ti r u by giving yo individual level ess. on raise awaren ti li a o C e th g in or help Streetiver a Meal to Volunteer–Del d s Individuals an Bound Homeles rand Central Food Families. Department at 21 coalitionforthehomeless.org Dear Friends: Close to a million people have been kept off the streets of New York, thanks to the Coalition for the Homeless. Over the past 25 years, the Coalition has become a national leader in innovative strategies to end homelessness while helping those who become homeless get a roof over their heads and the skills needed for economic self-sufficiency. We started out small - a staff of three - but the early impact of the Coalition was enormous. We established the “Right to Shelter” in New York City - first for single men, and subsequently for women and families. Because of this groundbreaking advocacy, a quarter century later, hundreds of thousands of people have been provided life-saving, emergency shelter. The Coalition built on these early victories to press all levels of government to invest in cost-efficient, housingbased alternatives for homeless New Yorkers. We safeguard the civil rights of our poorest neighbors and work effectively and creatively to ensure everyone is afforded the dignity and stability of a home. As you’ve seen in this report, we’ve also developed many direct service programs - from crisis services to job training; from children’s programs to permanent housing. Thanks to your support, each day we are able to help over 3,500 people! Because of this frontline work, we understand what homeless life looks like, what it feels like. The endless noise and loss of privacy in a shelter. The grind of daily visits to soup kitchens and welfare offices. The dirty clothes. The need for a bath. The fear, anger and humiliation. The power homelessness holds once it takes over a life is undeniable. But we also see the power restored to the thousands of people we serve each year when they are able to take back their lives. This is a critical time for the Coalition - and New York as a whole. Our most recent report stunned the city: New York City has reached a new record for the number of homeless families living in our shelters. In the past year alone, the number of homeless people in shelters has increased over 11 percent and the number of children has increased by 18 percent, to over 14,000. Many myths persist about our homeless neighbors and what is needed to give each of them a way home. We hope you will share this report with your friends, family and colleagues, as a way of raising awareness on the causes of and solutions to modern-mass homelessness. The Coalition is the leading voice on behalf of homeless New Yorkers and provides hope to so many. Your support makes it all possible! Gratefully, Mary E. Brosnahan Executive Director The Downtown Center for Non Profits Fourth floor Crisis Intervention Program waiting room Third floor First Step Job Training Program computer lab Second floor daycare center In June 2002, the Coalition purchased its new headquarters in Lower Manhattan to house our programs and services, and to foster collaboration with complementary non profit partners. The following year, The Downtown Center for Non Profits opened its doors. This prime location has dramatically improved our ability to deliver essential services to New York City’s homeless and low-income individuals and families by allowing for centralized resources. The return on investment is clear—a building solely dedicated to the eradication of homelessness and to a safe, secure future for all New Yorkers. Downtown Tenants Hamilton-Madison House, established in 1898, is one of New York’s earliest tenement housing projects, providing services that reinforce the strengths of individuals, families, and communities. During the last year, more than 16,000 children and adults benefited from the wide array of early childhood education, after school and youth programs, job training and employment programs, language and literacy education, and mental health and senior services offered by Hamilton-Madison House at locations throughout Lower Manhattan. At the Downtown Center for Non Profits, Hamilton-Madison House provides early childhood education and day care. www.hmhonline.com Support the Campaign Matching Opportunity An anonymous donor has presented the Coalition with a matching gift challenge. Your donation to The Downtown Center will be matched on a $1-to-$1 basis, up to $3 million and through 2008. Ignorance, fear, apathy, and misinformation perpetuate the myths we walk around with every day—“They’re responsible for their own fate;” “They don’t want to work;” “They’re all criminals.” These ideas allow us to pretend the epidemic of homelessness only happens to people who give in to their vices or simply give up. But now that you know the myths, what will you do to change the reality? 129 fulton street new york, new york 10038 phone: 212.776.2000 fax: 212.964.1303 www.coalitionforthehomeless.org info@cfthomeless.org
