SPECTATORS GUIDE ON HOW TO WATCH THE RACE
Maui’s World Championship XTERRA course is a classic and covers 27 miles of unyielding terrain. The experience is a
sensory riot – crystal clear Pacific waters, fragrant breezes, bright sun, fine volcanic dust, needle-like kiawe thorns, soft
white sand, cool green lawns, and lava rock of every shape, color, and size.
Start and Swim: Located at the beach fronting the Makena Beach & Golf Resort, there are plenty of great vantage
points to watch the mass start from the lawn above. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in blue
and women in pink. A short beach shuffle mid-race between two 750-meter laps of a triangular course gives spectators
a chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.
T1 and T2 - Bike and Run Transition: Located a few yards from the swim start in a big grassy area at the lobby level
of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. The transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the
change-over from any position around the boundary.
Bike: The bike course is not open to the public and cannot be pre-ridden by competitors.
Run: Most of the run course is also on private lands and closed to the public with the exception of a long, leg-burning
section of sand at Makena Beach, aka “Big Beach”.
Finish: The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is the place to be for both transitions, the finish, and live race reports. There’s
food booths, the Paul Mitchell cut-a-thon, XTERRA Gear shop, the Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front row
seat to one of the greatest spectacles in all of sport - the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of
emotion at the finish line.
Friends, Family and fans that are not able to attend the race can get live updates on the internet at www.xterramaui.com
starting at 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 5am in Sydney, Australia, 8am in New Zealand,
4pm in Brazil).
The Makena Beach & Golf Resort (808-874-1111)
There are few places left in Hawaii where you can stroll along quiet stretches of
sand, see waves splash on ancient, storied shores and feel what the Hawaiians
call the mana, or spirit of the land. One such place is Makena on Maui's southwestern coast, home of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
The Resort is secluded on 1800 acres, between a perfect crescent beach and
the dramatic slopes of Mount Haleakala. A true Aloha experience, the Resort
welcomes you with everything you desire for your Hawaiian visit. Sparkling
Pacific views from every guest room. A pristine beach. Spectacular golf. Plus
oceanside recreation and enticing dining options.
Designed for relaxation, the Resort surrounds an Asian meditation garden with
stone paths, waterfalls and streams swimming with brilliant multi-colored carp.
You'll feel the serenity from the moment you arrive, when a lei of seashells is
draped over your shoulders and you're welcomed with the genuine smiles and
warm attention of the staff.

QUICK FACTS ON THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
WHAT IS XTERRA: The world’s premier off-road triathlon, combining a 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) swim that starts in front of
the Makena Beach & Golf Resort a 32-kilometer (20-miles) mountain bike that climbs 3,000 feet up and down the
lower slopes of Haleakala, and a 12-kilometer (7.5-miles) trail run that traverses lava rock, forest trails, and beach sand.
Top pros finish in roughly two-and-a-half hours.
WHO RACES IN MAUI: A sold-out field of 550 racers including 75 professionals and 450 amateurs representing 30
countries & 32 U.S. states, ages 14 (Hanna Rae Finchamp from Altadena, CA) to 73 (Ron Hill from Hayden, ID).
WHEN: The XTERRA World Championship starts at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 24. The XTERRA Makena Beach
5km and 10km trail runs are on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 8:00 a.m.
WHERE: At the Makena Beach & Golf Resort on Maui’s South Shore.
WHY: The XTERRA World Championship race is the last in a series of nearly 100 off-road triathlon races held in 15
countries and 37 U.S. States. The concept is to provide a bona-fide off-road world championship for amateur and pro
athletes. For pros there is $105,000 in prize money at stake.
THE COURSE: Arguably the toughest and most scenic on the entire circuit, the Maui XTERRA course is a classic.
From the crystal clear waters of the Pacific, to the sharp lava rocks and kiawe thorns of the bike and run - Hawaii’s
natural obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth.
HOW THEY QUALIFIED: Amateurs enter the World Championship through one of two means:
1. Earn a slot by qualifying as one of the top finishers in their age group at an XTERRA Championship race in Brazil,
Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Saipan, South Africa,
Switzerland and Alabama, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, Utah, and Virginia in the United States. There is also a special
Hawaii resident qualifier, the MountainMan, held on Oahu each year, or...
2. Enter through the at large drawing - a limited number of slots are offered on a first-come first-serve basis.
XTERRA BACKGROUND: This is year 15 for the XTERRA World Championship on Maui – the birthplace of off-road
triathlon. The first XTERRA race was held here on November 3, 1996 with just 123 participants and was televised on
Fox Sports Net. The demand for the sport of XTERRA exploded thereafter and there are now more than 30,000
competitors from all 50 states and more than 40 countries worldwide.
1996:
1999:
2000:
2001:
2010:

11 races spanning from California to New Jersey. First year of Pro Points Series.
XTERRA goes global with its first international races in England, Japan, and Canada.
The first year of the XTERRA USA Championship Series.
Now 67 events in the U.S., plus more than 30 international races including a European Tour
TELEVISION: This will be the 15th straight year a nationally broadcast one-hour show will be produced on the event,
which showcases Maui’s scenic south shore. The 2009 XTERRA World Championship one-hour TV show has been
seen by 5.2 million viewers via national syndication (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) and Fox Sports Network. There have been
223 airings of the show since January 2010 and it is still being broadcast on Fox stations nationwide. This year’s show
will start its run in national syndication in mid-January 2011.

XTERRA MAKENA BEACH TRAIL RUNS
S a t u r d a y, O c t o b e r 2 4 a t 8 : 0 0 a . m .
The off-road adventurous spirit of XTERRA reaches out
to the community with the XTERRA Makena Beach 5km
and 10km Trail Runs. Both races are open to one-andall, and a benefit for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui
County. In an effort to get more participants involved, the
5km is open for walkers too! Awards go to the top three
in each age group, the 10km men’s and women’s winners
earn roundtrip airfare between the mainland and Hawaii
on Hawaiian Airlines, and the 5km winners earn a pair of
shoes from XTERRA Footwear.
XTERRA BY NIGHT
Maui is a reward for a great season, and as such
competitors are treated to a pair of "ono" dinners with the
Night of Champions carbo-loading affair on Saturday and
the awards celebration on Sunday - complete with highlight
videos and special presentations. Both are held under the
stars at the magnificent Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
On Sunday, it gets scary! The XTERRA Halloween costume
party is legendary...Despite the typical post-race banter and
antics by delirious athletes, the best-costumed competitor
wins Hawaiian Airlines roundtrip tickets for two from the
U.S. mainland to Hawaii.
The race starts at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort then
quickls ascends up the south slope of Haleakala into a
desert-like environment. After a pass though "Cactus
Alley", competitors are treated to a run on the white
sands of Makena Beach, famed as one of the most
beautiful beaches in the world. The course continues
through the "spooky" forest adorned with kiawe trees and
leads to a striking black sand beach. The final leg is a
balancing act of speed and skill, as runners cross over
jagged lava rocks, infamous for grabbing and twisting
unsuspecting ankles. Entry is $25 for the 5k and $30 for
the 10k and all competitors receive a tee shirt and
refreshments.

At every major XTERRA championship
event Paul Mitchell hosts a charity hair
cut-a-thon to benefit the Challenged
Athletes Foundation. This year
XTERRA athlete Rich Costello has
agreed to let the fate of his
12-month-old beard be a fundraising tool for CAF. He'll either
shave it off or keep it after we tally up which side received the
largest total donation in the CAF "Shave it or Save it"
campaign. If "Shave it" wins, we'll shave the beard at Sunday
night's award
ceremony. Either way, the winner will be CAF, and we hope to raise more than $5,000 through Rich's
beard. You can donate on-site Sunday, 10am - 2pm, or online at xterramaui.com.
XTERRA GREEN PLEDGE AND BEACH CLEAN-UP - The XTERRA Eco Team does

after the event (21+ only). Competitors are also encouraged to bring a canned food
item when registering to donate to the Maui Foodbank.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Maui’s XTERRA course is legendary, and conditions change radically from year-to-year, diminishing the advantage to
repeat competitors and perpetuating the course's stature as the most intimidating in the series. Hawaii’s natural
obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth and for the 500+ athletes racing in Maui – the XTERRA World
Championship is a truly unique experience. The victor will traverse this rugged terrain in roughly two and half hours
(although Conrad Stoltz broke the record by almost two minutes when he crossed in 2:22:55 in 2002), with the lead
woman 30-minutes behind. Age groupers must reach the bike/run transition by 1:00pm (race starts at 9am), or their
quest for the finish will be cut short. NOTE: Course records mean little as the route has changed through the years.

Competitors are not permitted to pre-ride the XTERRA World
Championship course. For newcomers, it is read and react.
For veterans, the experience might allow them to remember
portions but more often than not it instills a solid feeling of
respect for the Old Lady of XTERRA.
Every year competitors say, “XYZ course is tougher than
Maui”. Every year around noon on Championship Sunday,
the look – the eyes pointing down and the head shaking side
to side – tells you that there is nothing like Haleakala.
Climbing from sea level to 1,200 feet then down and back up to 1,400 feet with a final portion called “the plunge” of 8kilometers back to sea level, this track has everything. Full of rock strewn paths, gnarly golf ball sized gravel, short
steep and long go forever climbs, hard packed lava, and sometimes, depending on conditions, deep, dusty silt.
Over 3,000 total feet of climbing.

Out on the run athletes will find all sorts of sand - white, gold, black, salt and
pepper, green or garnet. There’s a lot more climbing involved, a spooky forest to
navigate, a dozen different surfaces to cross, and just before the finish line some of
Hawaii’s most stunning oceanfront scenery.
There is no accounting for the heat generated by gnarly lava fields, making otherwise simple obstacles extremely difficult to conquer. The "Makena Beach Mile" is
a grueling slog along soft sand, but a beautiful end run along the ocean-front golf
course helps racers forget it all at the finish.

“KAHUNA DAVE’S” PRO RACE PREVIEW
Nobody has been to more
XTERRA Championship events
than the managing director of
the
XTERRA World Tour "Kahuna Dave" Nicholas.
Having been to every World
Championship race in Maui
since creating the sport back in
1996, and having been onsite
to see this years races unfold
all over the world - the Kahuna
is more than qualified to
speculate on who might win it all this year. That doesn't
mean he'll get it right, in fact, he's hardly ever right (just 2
for 16 in picking winners over the last eight years).
So, with a grain of salt, but some tasty insight nonetheless,
here are the Kahuna's 2010 Maui prognostications:
Switzerland and is rested and ready and Nico Lebrun, the
third French connection is always a threat to win.
Mel McQuaid said it early and has kept her promise to peak
in the fall. While winless during the summer, she won
handily in Canada and then again at the USA Champs and
has had this wicked little smile as if she knows something
we don’t. Scottish lass Lesley Paterson is having her finest
Julie
Another fall is here and the triathlon world focuses on
Hawaii. The reason I bring this up is in 2009 Eneko Llanos
almost did what nobody thought could be done; win Kona
and Maui in the same year. He nearly pulled it off with a
brilliant stint at the front in Kona and a win on Maui.
This year 3-time XTERRA women’s champ Julie Dibens did
even more than Llanos at Kona by finishing 3rd and leading
until the last few miles of the run. How will she do a few
weeks later?
Don’t think for a moment they won’t have competition on
Maui. Conrad Stoltz has had another totally dominant year,
crushing the field on the definitely Un-Conrad course in
Utah. Franky Batelier had a very strong year in Europe,
Olivier Marceau is sporting a new beard, won easily in
Eneko
year. With her new biking skills keeping her close at T2 and
her unbelievably fast running, whoever is in front of her
coming onto the run had best be ahead by a comfortable
margin or they will see a flashing red suited Paterson going
past.
The womens field is deeper than ever. The Maui course is
perfectly suited for Dibens. No wetsuit swim, not too tech-

nical a bike. However 2010 will bring a host of women
ready to take her down. As stated, McQuaid is at her peak,
Shonny Vanlandingham won everything early but has had
time to rest since being crowned US Champ again. Renata
Bucher and Marion “bubu” Lorblanchet tied for the Euro
crown and Bubu is a fast swimmer who will not give up gobs
of time to Dibens. Climbing is what Bucher loves to do and
along with petite Austrian Carina Wasle can get to the front
of the pack if they can pass the faster swimmers early on
the bike course. Throw in Lesley’s fabulous running with
Danelle Kabush returning after her second child and the
experience of a few 2nd overalls at Maui, mix in Kiwi Jen
Smith who is always strong on Maui and there are 9 true
contenders.
The men are equally deep. The top favorites have to be
Llanos, Stoltz, Marceau, Batelier and Lebrun, in no
particular order. But Austrian Michi Weiss has been super
strong on the road this year and has had two podiums in two
attempts. Sebastien Kienle from Germany is joining
XTERRA German Champ Felix Schumann and while Kienle
has concentrated on road long distance the past few years,
he did win XTERRA Germany in 2006. Schumann has had
a good race season, has finished his studies and has
everything in place to make his mark on Maui. England’s
Ian Leitch and Kiwi Richard Ussher are both as fast on the
run as Nico Lebrun and if they can keep close on the bike –
well they could be the male version of Lesley Paterson.
From the States Josiah Middaugh loves Maui and he and
Weiss had the two fastest bike splits last year. Seth
Wealing is always potent when he has a good day.
Canadian Mike Vine has taken most of the year off but was
impressive winning the Canadian championship. Mike
knows Maui and has had many good days there.
A huge entry of age groupers from all around the globe –
literally every Continent except Antarctica will be fighting
every bit as hard as the pro’s and could easily play a role in
what happens.
We have two men and two women with 3 World Champ
titles and all are here for 2010. Each of them want to be the
first to hit 4 and Stoltz, Llanos, Dibens and McQuaid have to
be the favorites. But there are others who will be in the mix
so don’t put all your money on this quartet.
We know there has been no rain on Maui.
The roads and trails are dusty and loose. Perhaps these
conditions will make things fast – but never assume
anything from Madam Pele. What she gives, she can take
away and the winner will be the person who treats her with
respect and stays error free.

THE HAWAIIAN AIRLINES DOUBLE
The Hawaiian Airlines “Double”
Purse is awarded to the pro man
and woman with the fastest
combined 2010 XTERRA World
Championship and Ironman Hawaii
Championship time, a feat
reserved for the world’s leading
endurance athletes as the two
events are held just two weeks
apart. “The Double” has become a
sought-after title by both pro and amateur competitors. Hawaiian Airlines
pays $2,500 to both the top man and woman professionals with the fastest
times and in addition, will present the amateur winners with round trip
tickets for two from the mainland to Maui. Last year Eneko Llanos from
Spain won the double for the fourth straight year, while Amy Eck from
Hawaii & Arnaud Bouvier from France (pictured) won the amateur awards.

LAST YEAR AT THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
MAKENA, MAUI - Eneko Llanos, 32, of Vitoria-Gasteiz,
Spain and Julie Dibens, 34, from Bath, England (living in
Boulder, Colorado) won the XTERRA World Championship
and $20,000 first place prize money that goes with it at on a
hot and sunny day at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
Llanos finished in 2:37:22, 55 seconds ahead of Nicolas
Lebrun from France, to collect his third XTERRA World
Championship and first since winning back-to-back titles in
2003 and 2004.
The men’s race was amazing, with all the sports heavy
weights battling it out on the dusty slopes of Haleakala.
Seth Wealing and Eneko Llanos were the first two
contenders out of the one-mile warm water Pacific Ocean
swim, followed by Olivier Marceau, Franky Batelier, and
Conrad Stoltz.
Per his Maui routine, Stoltz jumped to an early lead on the
mountain bike and was the first to hit the infamous
“Heartbreak Hill” section at about mile 4, but the chase pack
was thick and persistent. By midway through the 20-mile
bike Stoltz was still in front but with a tail that included
Batelier, Llanos, Marceau, and Lebrun – one-by-one and
separated by mere seconds. Just past the halfway point
“Ned’s Climb” takes riders up some 1,400 feet in a matter of
a mile to the highest point on the course at where the
“Plunge” begins.
It’s here where Stoltz’ has built his legend and the spot
where in past years he could put guys away with his fearless downhill riding. This year the course was as smooth as
it has ever been and minimized the fear factor for his foes.
Not to say that the Plunge isn’t still a gnarly, loose, jagged
lava rock riddled stretch, it is – just not as bad.
“This was a tough race, but the bike course was a little
smoother, a little faster,” said Llanos, who became the first
racer in 14 years to win XTERRA Worlds after competing at
the Ironman World Champs. “The course was a little less
technical, and I went at a steady pace and it went really
well.”
Stoltz cleared the section but didn’t put any time on the lead
pack and at mile 15 Llanos and Batelier were right behind
him with Josiah Middaugh 30 seconds back, and Lebrun
and Marceau within a minute.
There hasn’t been a race in recent memory here in Maui
where six guys were this close this far into the race, and
another big name was about to be added to the mix.
Michi Weiss, last year’s runner-up, came out of the water in
79th place a full four minutes behind the leaders, but carved
two minutes off his blazing fast bike split of a year ago
(1:28:11) to close in on the leaders.
At the bike-to-run transition the spectators lining the lush
luau grounds at the host hotel got to see for themselves just
how exciting the racing action was with Stoltz, Llanos, and
Middaugh all coming into and exiting together. Llanos got
the early jump and once he got in front he never gave it up.
“To be honest, I didn’t expect to be this strong,” said Llanos,
who finished 14th at the Ironman World Championship in
8:37:55 and captured the Hawaiian Airlines Double award
for the fourth straight time. “Just two weeks ago I was really disappointed in Kona, and now here I am so happy. I
came here with no pressure and just wanted to have fun
and then I felt strong from the swim and had a good day.
When I crossed the finish line I couldn’t believe it, how fast
feelings change, and something amazing happened and I’m
just so happy now.”
DIBENS FIRST TO WIN THREE STRAIGHT
Julie Dibens is a cool cat. She’s calm, collected, confident
and an absolute monster on this Maui course. She actually
trailed in this race for the first time in two years, with
Christine “Big Fish” Jeffrey coming out of the water 38
seconds up, but that lasted all of about five minutes and
then Julie was Julie – making it look easy and putting more
on more time on her competitors with every turn of the
pedal. By mile 11 she had a four-minute lead and was mixed
in with the top 15 men. At mile 15 Dibens was up by nearly
five minutes, it was more than that at transition, and when
she finished with a women’s event record time of 2:56:42,
the finish line crowd waited another seven-and-a-half minutes before seeing Lesley Paterson.
Dibens is the first pro – man or woman – to win this race
three years-in-a-row and joins the exclusive club of threetime winners with Stoltz, Melanie McQuaid, and Llanos.
“I felt good all day except for that last stretch of the run on
the lava,” said Dibens. “I was able to ride in control and run
smart. I’m delighted to be up here on the podium again and
to win this race three times in a row is really special.”

2010 XTERRA EUROPEAN TOUR RESULTS
2010 Recap by “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas - Once the dust had settled at the XTERRA European Tour final stop in Prangins,
Switzerland two XTERRA pros from France (le magnifique) stood on top of the European tour pro standings. For their wins,
Franky Batelier and Marion (call her “Bubu”) Lorblanchet each earned US$4,000 as part of the XTERRA European Tour
Championship US$20,000 prize purse. Batelier repeats as tour champ after having gone a perfect 4-for-4 in 2009 and winning 3 of the 4 races he entered this year. Look for Batelier to be a strong contender for the XTERRA World Championship
title this year in Maui. The women’s title was to be determined on the trails of Switzerland. Holding a slim lead over
Lorblanchet in the standings Renata Bucher didn’t have to win in Switzerland to be crowned European Tour Champ for the
fifth time, she simply had to finish ahead of her. But on the second lap of the run the French woman was able to pass
Bucher for the race lead and hold on for first place. The win gave Lorblanchet a total of 380 points in the tour standings
and locked her into a tie with Bucher for the women’s tour title. XTERRA tie-breaker rules are determined by the finishing
position in the last race of the season. By winning the last race, Bubu tied Renata and the tie breaker made her the series
champ.

When XTERRA celebrated its 10th year in
October of 2005, we created the XTERRA
HALL OF FAME. This year, on the eve of the
XTERRA World Championship another
XTERRA legend will be honored at the night
of champions dinner. Past recipients are...
NED OVEREND (2005)
After retiring from mountain biking in 1996 at the age of 40 (he won six national titles and became mountain bikings
first world champion in 1990), Overend competed in the first-ever XTERRA in 1996, finishing third. In ‘97 he was
second, and in ‘98 and ‘99 he won consecutive World Championships at the ripe young age of 42 & 43. He was also
the XTERRA USA Series Champion in 2002. At the 2004 World Championship, at age 50, Overend posted the 9th
fastest bike split and placed 21st overall. Midway through the bike course Peter Reid was overheard saying “There’s
a 50-year-old in front of me!” He was so devastating on the mountain bike that he earned the nicknames of “Deadly
Nedly” and “The Lung.” At the end of his career, commentators respectfully called him “The Old Man of the Mountain.”
SCOTT TINLEY (2006)
In 1996, Scott competed in XTERRA's inaugural event, known as Aquaterra at the time. That day, he finished in 4th
place and went on to finish in the top 10 in both 1997 and '98. But more than just an athlete, Scott was one of the early
ambassadors for the sport. Tinley was at the sharp end of getting athletes to Maui. When you look at the high level
pro's that came 10 years ago, it is far more impressive than what one, solitary, unusual race with a $5,000 prize list
should have attracted. Jimmy Riccitello, Mike Pigg, Wes Hobson, Ray Browning, Pat Brown, Scott Molina, Emilio
Desoto, Jeff Devlin, Kenny Glah, Paul Huddle, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby, Sian Welch, Karen Smeyers and more.
A lot of that participation is because of ST, who helped found and develop the sport of off-road triathlon.
KERSTIN WEULE (2007)
Kerstin Weule, using equally deadly swim, mountain bike and run speed, won more XTERRA races than anyone (until
Jamie Whitmore took on the challenge). She won 19 XTERRA titles, including the US. Pro Series in 1999 and 2000,
and the 2000 World Championship. Born in Braunlage, Germany in 1966, Weule’s name was synonymous with
XTERRA for years. The winning started in 1998 in Louisiana and she won the next two big races. In her career,
Kerstin won at almost every U.S. venue where XTERRA traveled too, including races in the UK and Canada. Weule
brought much to XTERRA – an open disposition, the ability to share all that she knew at XTERRA University clinics,
a great laugh, her cartwheel at the finish line, & blue painted toenails on raceday.
JIMMY RICCITELLO (2008)
Flash back to 1996… AquaTerra…the first XTERRA…123 Speedo-clad racers on the start line at dawn on the beach
in Wailea, Maui. A who’s who of triathlon and mountain biking showed up to try something completely new…off-road
triathlon. And, it turned out that XTERRA with its catch phrase “Your toughest competitor is Mother Nature” was right
up Riccitello’s alley. He took the inaugural XTERRA World Championship by more than three minutes over triathlon
great Mike Pigg. After the win, he said “Man this race is a bitch, but it’s the true spirit of triathlon – the athlete against
the course”. Over seven years Riccitello raced XTERRA all over the U.S., including six more Maui World
Championships, and was always the life of the party.
MICHAEL TOBIN (2009)
Tobin won at everything he tried, posting championships in running (and not your usual 5K but running up mountains
for a couple hours); duathlon, where he was Powerman Champ twice with 14 international victories; XTERRA with
16 victories and a World Championship; and adventure racing – where he has won all over the world. Tobin dominated XTERRA for years. He won Kirkwood in 1997; won 3 of 4 in 1998; and won 9 out of 10 in 1999. To that point, the
one prize that eluded Tobin was Maui. He was 4th in 1997 – 3rd in 1998 – 2nd in 1999 and finally won it all in 2000.
He’s the last American to win off-road triathlon’s greatest race.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
XTERRA WARRIOR AWARD
Feherenbach
Kim
Mills
Since 2003 XTERRA has honored a member of its
Tribe that has shown exemplary courage in the face of adversity, gone above and beyond to help the
greater community, or personified the “Live More” spirit. Previous winners include...
2009 - Juergen Feherenbach - For years of support behind the scenes in Europe
2008 - Jamie Whitmore - XTERRA’s winningest pro ever with 37 career victories
started battling cancer in late 2007 and in her spirited fight has inspired countless
people from around the world. See how she’s doing now at jamiewhitmore.com.
2007 - Tae Yoong Kim – This Korean born Japanese age grouper can be found
at XTERRA events in almost every continent - his enthusiasm tanscends the language barrier everywhere he goes.
2006 - Nico Pfitzenmeier – former mountain biker, Nico has traveled the world
“competing to help kids”. His fundraising efforts assist children in Mozambique
with housing and education.
2005 - Dr. John Mills – Dr. John has spearheaded the medical support team on
Maui since the inception of the race. Behind the scenes he has put in countless
hours in preperation for the event
2004 - Willie Stewart – Willie lost his arm in a construction accident but has not
let that stop him from pursuing his favorite sports. A high tech prosthetic with
shocks and quick release mechanism has allowed him to ride a mountain bike and
rip up XTERRA courses all over the U.S.
2003 - Bryan Medrano – Bryan lives life to the fullest while raising awareness
and funds for Huntington’s Disease, a neurological disorder that effects him and
other family members.
Pfitzenmeier
Stewart
FOUR THAT HAVE DONE ALL 14 MAUI RACES
Medrano
Steve Tarpinian from New York, and Steve Fisher, Gerry Clark, and Joe Alueta
from Maui have done (and finished) every XTERRA in Maui since 1996.
A BLESSING AND A LEI
There is perhaps no pre-race ritual more
spiritually powerful than the beachfront
Hawaiian blessing by Reverend Alalani
Hill, and there’s certainly nothing better
than crossing the finish line and seeing

XTERRA
Shoes
Designed to Help Athletes Stalk
Their On-Course Prey
TJ Gray and Ashley Brown —
designers of XTERRA’s new line of
footwear and apparel — stood at the
finish line of the XTERRA World
Championship in Maui in October
2008. While many of the competitors
lay in bed the night before counting
sheep in anticipation of the race, that
afternoon Gray and Brown were counting shoes.
Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe.
As athletes poured down from the lower slopes of Mount
Haleakala from their nearly seven-mile trail run over roots,
rocks and ravines, Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their
eyes. “Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown,
who along with partner Gray have also developed shoes for
Nike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing
stability for less weight.”
They returned to the drawing board, determined to make
XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail running
shoe on the market. With four months until the launch of the
shoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City,
designs were tweaked, materials tested — including a
unique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefoot
and a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel.
But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come.
After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, a
molding model never before seen in the category was
created. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole,
replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of two
layers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfort
and stability while taking away weight.
The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightest
trail runners ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces for
men, 9.5 for women.
With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Gray
and Brown began to research every movement taken on a
trail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degree
directional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water,
the balanced gripped-toe run across a log.
As they were going for a timed run in the woods near their
studios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as the
lead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s new
footwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.
“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digging
into loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on every
step, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathlete
at Syracuse.
“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” he
continued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’s
unique outsole lug concept.”
The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray and
Brown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design forms
independent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flex
zones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted the
lugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center,
helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creating
a larger surface area.
“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’s
co-existence with all things found in the environment, said
Brown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it be
animal, plant or any of nature’s elements.
Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new line
is that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’re
to be connected with.”
XTERRA’s footwear launch includes five styles: trail
runner, trail trainer, ultra trainer, performance sandal, and
performance slide.

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTED
IT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom
Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of
XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the
Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.
"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,
what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"
explained Kiely.
The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and
entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.
The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.
Bring those two together in programming, and you've got
something big.
So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International
Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that
attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New
Zealand,
California,
and
of
course,
Hawaii.
Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide
leader in sports.
In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,
and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of
Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the
Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"
Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."
"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says
Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and
TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,
it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."
ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and
Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991
TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV
shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the
benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.
"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian
Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different
stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good
fun stuff," said Kiely.
Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean
Challenge and a few others televised events, including the
inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.
"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the
managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour
O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were
allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from
every country kept their amateur status so they could race
in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed
with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,
Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the
field was a who's who of international cycling."
A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,
road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'
Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain
biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV
shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the
Hawaiian Mountain Tour.
In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer
Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever
mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the
XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,
Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,
Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the
Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at
Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range
meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races
the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump
in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a
mountain bike triathlon?
By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50
shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road
triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?
Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the
Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for
their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was
looking for a new event that could tell a different story about
Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point
was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and
south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach
in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21
miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV
for the whole world to see?
Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the
marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very
subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all
the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.
Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of
opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and
VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.
"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were
thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're
forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I
immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've
got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.
"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

THE XTERRA PLANET
At the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a oneoff event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined to
become a lifestylea movement.
And look at what XTERRA has become
- From that one race in 1996 to 100+ in 15 countries in a 14-year span including a 65-stop America Tour for amateurs
and a full-blown European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found on nearly every continent in the world.
- XTERRA initiated a series of camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards an
active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance to
race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.
- We dish out more than a quarter-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport
athletes and garner the attention of national and international media.
- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize close to 200 amateur regional
champions and 24 amateur national champions, plus relay team and collegiate national champs, XTERRA Trail Run
Series, National and World Champs..
- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV and XTERRA.TV. Dozens of adventure themed
shows reach into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places. Our very own 24/7
web TV network, www.xterra.tv, allows viewers to watch our shows on demand for free.
- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, with
races in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game so
we selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website.
- With the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specifically
designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.
- We've opened the doors for runners with the XTERRA Trail Running Series. This year there are more than 60 5km,
10km, and 21km runs reaching into 15 U.S. States and several countries - providing more chances to participate in the
healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.
- We launched the XTERRA Eco Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the
communities that host us.
- XTERRA brand licensees have introduced bicycling accessories and XTERRA exercise equipment, XTERRA
footwear is widely available with revolutionary designed trail runners, and XTERRA Wetsuits continues to increase its
market share of the wetsuit category.
- We created our very own quarterly magazine, The XTERRA Planet, to keep our membership connected and showcase the amazing athletes and photography we’ve collected through the years.
- And, XTERRA is just 14 years old...
