APPLICATIONS ENGINEER If you have questions or if there is a specific solution you are searching for, please contact Nitron Technologies at (330)686-9038. Sales Representatives and Distributors are also listed on our website. Nitron Technologies 2 www.nitrontech.com Adhesive Construction How to Use this Catalog Nitron Technologies has many standard products and the basic characteristics are explained below. Or, contact one of our Application Engineers to assist you in selection of a product for your specific application. Custom solutions are also available for our roll tape and die cut products. Adhesive Configuration Single-Coated Double-Coated Free Film Carrier Membrane The term “carrier” describes the material coated with adhesive. A carrier’s primary function is to carry the adhesive, but it can also provide reinforcing strength, gap filling, insulation, shock absorption, and dimensional stability to the product. • Paper Carriers: Cellulose fiber that can be treated with various chemicals and many color choices. • Polyester (PET) Film: Clear film with high tensile strength. Good barrier properties to most chemicals. • Polypropylene (PP) Films: Oriented and non-oriented versions. Clear, white or colored films. Water resistant. Not good barrier properties for chemicals. • Polyethylene (PE) Films: Similar to PP films but are more easily stretched and relatively inexpensive. • Polyethylene (PE) Foam: Cross-linked, closed cell foam. • Urethane Foam: Available in ester and ether forms. Also available in many thicknesses and densities and designed to work for specific applications. • Neoprene Foam: Used to produce double-coated mounting foams for special applications. Strong and provide excellent chemical resistance. • Scrim (Cloth): Threads of material woven into a variety of patterns. • Foil: Dead soft aluminum. Provides excellent tensile strength and conforms to uneven geometry. Adhesive Type • Rubber: Has higher tack than acrylic adhesives as well as higher shear strength, but has limited UV resistance. • Acrylic: Has better resistance to solvents, chemicals and water. Acrylic adhesive may be a better choice for applications that will operate at elevated temperatures. • Thermoset: Heat-assisted lamination that provides high strength at low and elevated temperatures. Commonly used to bond friction materials to metal. Nitron Technologies 3 www.nitrontech.com Adhesive Construction Adhesive Thickness The thickness of the adhesive material is generally determined by the application surface. In most cases, the design objective is to achieve the highest “wetting area” where the adhesive is in contact with the surface while using the least amount of material. An experienced Adhesive Applications Engineer can help determine an optimal solution. Liner The liner is the material used in manufacturing the product and is discarded at installation. • Densified Kraft Paper Liners (SCK): Papers coated with silicone release. Super Calendered Kraft “SCK”. 60# SCK: Good for most applications. 80# SCK: Thicker and stiffer material better for die-cutting processes and easier removal during assembly. • Polycoated Kraft Paper Liners (PCK): Polyethylene improves dimensional and moisture stability. 72# PCK: White liner is 6.0 mils thick. 83# PCK: Brown (unbleached) liner is 6.4 mils thick. 90# PCK: White liner is 6.9 mils thick. For use on sheeted product. Layflat and easy release. 12pt Board: Polycoated, brown (unbleached) board liners. Thick and stiff. Ideal for die cutting and easier installation handling. • Coated Kraft Liners (CCK): Bleached papers with a silicone release. 80# CCK: 4.8 mils thick. 60# CCK: 3.6 mils thick. • Film Liners: Clear or opaque with excellent moisture resistance and produces a super smooth adhesive. Polyester (PET): Very stable, high tensile and tear strength. Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE): Conformable liner with elastic properties. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): Stronger and less elastic than low density. Tolerates higher temperatures which permits processing through ovens. Adhesive Configurations • Roll: 3” standard core size. Roll width defined by part number suffix dash number. Length defined in spec sheet notes for each product type. • Sheet: Many products are available in sheet form. • Die Cut: Some products are designed for die cutting. Provide .dxf drawing for quotation. • Custom: Nitron Technologies excels at providing custom adhesive solutions. Please inquire. Specifications Many of the products in this catalog have been tested to OEM or Airworthiness Authority specifications for flame resistance and smoke density. Examples of these specifications are: • BAC 5319 Application of Decorative Surfaces to Interior Panels • FAR 25.853(a), BMS5-133F Type IV, Class 1 • Airbus ABD0031, Para. 7.3.2 and 7.4 Nitron Technologies 4 www.nitrontech.com NRP Rubber, Double-Coated Films, Single Liner General Description Polyester carrier provides dimensional stability and good die cutting properties.
