Dear Friends,
This year has been a challenging one, full of ambitious goals and aspirational work with an eye toward our future. We spent most
of the year working on our 2015-2017 strategic plan, engaging the insight of community leaders, board volunteers, staff and
other key stakeholders. Volunteers and staff spent many hours in meetings during the summer months planning our process and
implementing the strategic planning sessions in the fall, listening, recording the input and distilling it all into the plan you see here in
the annual report. It was truly an honor to work with this group on the one thing they care so much about - our YMCA of Delaware.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the strategic planning committee whose members gave so much time to this important work. We could not
have done it without them.
Now the real work begins as we engage more deeply with our children, families, members and communities to ensure that we are
meeting their needs. We are working hard to build our capacity through board development, annual fundraising, capital planning and
leadership development so we are prepared to do what is needed to support our great state long into the future. The key themes
from our plan: serve all, impact school success, address the public health issues of this generation, and develop facilities
to meet those needs.
In 2014, we launched a staff development initiative as a first step in preparing our staff leaders for the future. There were monthly
trainings throughout the year, open to all staff and over 900 people participated, gaining strength in areas from customer service,
software use, payroll, supervision, sales, and leadership. In early 2015 we announced the next step in our talent development
initiative - our Leadership Development program. Rising Stars will identify and cultivate new leaders in our organization, and the
Advanced Leadership Program will prepare our more tenured leaders for the high level positions we will need to fill as we grow. We
are excited to develop our bench strength and watch these individuals take on the challenges ahead.
As we moved through the year, staff and volunteers advanced and strengthened our partnerships with schools, non-profits, the business
community and those key stakeholders who support our YMCA work with their time, talent and critical thinking. These partnerships
make us all stronger, growing our capacity to serve all with quality and intentionality in communities that need us the most.

CLOSING THE GAP
ShopRite stores partnered with the Y’s Diabetes Prevention
Program this year and offered free glucose screenings to
seniors. The partnership was initiated during Diabetes
Awareness month.
Governor Markell swears in Jarod Wilson as the 2015 Youth
Governor as part of the Y’s Youth in Government conference. This
signature program teaches students the inner workings of state
government and culminates in an event at Legislative Hall.

Reading and introducing math and science games is a

Bear-Glasgow
The Bear-Glasgow Family YMCA is a hub of
healthy living in our area, situated across from
Glasgow Park. Our branch boasts a diverse,
health conscious membership. In 2014, we
partnered with the following community
organizations to promote youth development,
healthy living and our YMCA cause: Red
Robin Family Night, Colonial School District’s
Annual Community Education & Health Fair,
Keene Elementary PTA Day, Wilmington Flower
Market, Lums Pond Summer 2014 Back to
School Backpack Fest, Sparrow Run Community
Day, Middletown Peach Festival, Highmark
Family Fun Day and Macy’s WOW Event. We
are part of the fabric of life in the communities
surrounding our branch.
“Reading is a Ball,” in partnership with the
Delaware 87ers, encouraged 100 elementary
school students to read for fun and all were
invited to a game by the 87ers team. We
continue to strive for the highest possible
Delaware Stars rating in our preschool and
after school programs, and we have achieved
4 and 5 star ratings throughout our programs
which serve more than 400 children a day.
Family fitness was a theme for us in 2014 and
we introduced several new programs designed
to bring families together: Family Running,
Fun and Fit, Fitness Fridays, Family Yoga and
Zumba. Youngsters 8-13 flocked to our Youth
Fitness Center and we continue to provide
innovative, fun activities to keep kids interested.
Our younger set, the preschoolers, are enjoying
Leap and Learn, Petite Energy, Pee Wee Energy
and Wee Little Sports and we introduced a
wrestling program to our youth sports menu for
the older children. The branch continued HEPA
(Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) standards
in camp and after school programs by providing
fruits and vegetables at snack time along with
30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical
activity three times a week.
Our Couch to 5K program eased 170 people
into a running program and many of our past
participants are now avid runners. The Bear
Glasgow Y invites everyone to try, and the
result is that most of our members and families
develop skills and healthy behaviors way
beyond what they first imagined.
In 2014, we partnered with 10 year old
Braeden Mannering’s non-profit, Braeden’s
Brown Bags, to help him thank the community
for their support of his efforts to end hunger.
Other partners include Ronald McDonald
House, the University of Delaware, Parents as
Teachers and the Colonial School District. We
have plans in the works for a 2015 Summer
STEM Academy with the school district which
we hope will encourage interest and love of
math and science in students.
Open Doors, our financial assistance program,
awarded more than 48% of the scholarship
funds to single parent households, supporting
those families in need thanks to the help of our
volunteer and staff efforts to raise those funds.
YEAR IN REVIEW
Brandywine
2014 was an exciting year for our Brandywine Y as we stepped into the first stage of capital planning to expand our facility with the support of our
volunteers and staff. Preliminary work has been done to assess our ability to build a vertical expansion which will address the growing needs of our
Brandywine community. The addition of approximately 15,000 square feet will give us the ability to develop more comprehensive youth and teen
programming in the branch and increase our capacity to serve our members of all ages. The addition will include meeting and multi-use space for
gatherings and community meetings which allow connections and social interactions to thrive.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
It was another busy year for young people as we launched a new
partnership with the Brandywine School District serving 210 students in
a sports program involving games and practices at the school and at the
Y. We also hosted a clinic in partnership with Concord High School field
hockey serving 40 young women in skills development in preparation for
the upcoming season.
The Brandywine Y Swim Team, under the leadership of Coach Derek
Farrar and the assistance of Coach Anna Seiffert, continued to grow.
The swimmers and parents found confidence in the motto, “Believe in
the Process,” and have embraced an effort to be “committed to personal
development through swimming” both in and out of the pool. A team of
thirteen swimmers competed at Long Course YMCA Nationals, the largest
number of participants in quite a few years. At East Field South District
Championships, the BRY swimmers had a strong regional presence and
through the leadership of graduating seniors Henry Rogatz and Corey
Manley, the team reached new heights.
Camp Quoowant was teaming with children this year who explored new
offerings such as animal care, sign language, environmental education,
drama and public speaking. Our Camp welcomed visitors from all across
our Y association at our July camp gathering where close to 1200 children
convened for an exciting display of camp spirit. And every day is a day for
kids at our Y with sports, swim lessons, the youth fitness center, visiting
with friends in the playground or meeting new ones in our preschool
program.
HEALTHY LIVING
Any day you visit our Brandywine Y we are busy with hundreds of
community members working to get or stay healthy - our Y continues to
be the place to be for the whole family. Mornings bring us the before work
crowd looking to jumpstart their day, followed by our seniors who find
exercise and community in the same place, stay at home parents begin
to trickle in, taking advantage of our free child watch services, and then,
throughout the day and evening, you can bet our whole neighborhood
makes their way to the YMCA. As a trusted and dependable resource
in our community, we work hard to get better every day, adding new
programs to excite and engage in new ways.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Brandywine Y engaged a number of youth groups in volunteer
efforts at our Hanby Outdoor Center. The Brandywine Y Swim Team and
a number of Boy Scout troops and Girl Scout troops volunteered at the
center preparing it for the upcoming season. Our Young Leaders program
helped other children in our community by writing cards to the children at
the Ronald McDonald house and collecting coats, food and toys for the
Claymont Community Center. Camp partnered with United Cerebral Palsy
of Delaware, Inc. in their camp inclusion training project. Staff from UCP
of Delaware came to our camp training and expressed the importance
of inclusion and how to adapt transitions, games and communications
so everyone has a sense of belonging. Our adults were also responsibly
active, helping their neighbors with 89 members soliciting financial gifts
for our Annual Giving Campaign. Special thanks to our board volunteers
and the time, talent and financial support they provide every year.

Central, Resource Center &
Our Central and Walnut Street locations are meeting places for families,
children, business professionals and those in need. Located in the center
of everything, this branch is constantly expanding services to all our
community members, a true melting pot of people from all walks of life,
coming together in pursuit of a healthier life. It is the central meeting
place for newcomers to the City as well as a place to connect with old
friends, to network and to relax. Our Central branch has a diverse offering
of group exercise classes which attracts people from all over New Castle
County and accommodates all levels of fitness. Last year there were over
4300 member visits each week - a testimony to the role this Y plays in
keeping our city healthy.
The downtown facilities continue to be a tremendous resource for the
City of Wilmington with full day childcare serving 130 little ones each
day, before and after school supporting more than 150 working families
each day and 250 campers developing leadership skills, eating nutritious
meals and staying active during the summer months. More than 95% of
our families receive some form of subsidy to participate in these quality
programs. In 2014, our childcare received a Level 4 Star rating for our
Walnut Street program and Level 3 for our Central branch location, as we
work toward continuous improvement in service to our families.
Our downtown residence facility was home to more than 250 men in
transition last year, housing the highest percentage of veterans in the
city. Residents have access to a mid-day meal, social service networks
and enjoy being a part of a caring community of people as they plan their
next steps in life. Our YMCA is home to the disabled, those struggling
to overcome mental health or substance abuse challenges and those
needing temporary housing assistance.
Our volunteers raised a record $175,000 in annual giving to support
our neighbors and friends, and we recruited 19 mentors for our Black
Achievers program, all of whom generously give up their Saturdays during
the school year for our young people.
Teen leadership initiatives are a big area of focus for us, most notably
through our Black Achievers program which boasts a 95% college
enrollment rate. Our Youth in Government program has 161 participants
state-wide and our Leadership Camps prepare young people for the
upcoming school year and the workplace. We launched a new partnership
with the Community Education Building, providing space for physical
education programs, after school care and engagement with our Water
Wise initiative, accommodating the needs of many new families.
Water Wise is led by our Central branch, serving 2719 children in 2014,
offering them a drowning prevention program – a lifesaving initiative,
focused on young people who do not have access to swim lessons. We
trained city lifeguards to keep the public pools safe and distributed 800
free swim suits to underprivileged children.
In 2014, we launched an after school leadership program for middle
school students and are happy to report we host 25-45 students each
day. These students have a safe haven to relax and interact with caring
adults and access to tutoring and other support. We continue to develop
innovative solutions to the challenges our city of Wilmington children face.

YEAR IN REVIEW
Sussex
2014 was our year to shine at the Sussex Family YMCA as we stretched
ourselves, our resources and our partnerships to do more for our
community. We initiated a new Middle School Leadership Program for
students attending Mariner and Georgetown Middle Schools. Close to
50 students had meaningful and fun activities, connections with trusted
adults including homework help, community service projects, and lots of
fun. Our students had the privilege of delivering the 4th of July message
on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and provided landscaping
assistance in the City of Georgetown. As our students will tell us – “this is
way better than hanging out at home by myself!”
Our Tsunami Swim Team grew to 99 student athletes. More than a third
of the team qualified for districts and we had five national qualifiers.
Thanks to partnerships with Beebe Hospital, the Cape Gazette, Sussex
Emergency Associates and the Lewes Yacht Club Foundation we were
able to provide free drowning prevention programs for young people
through our YMCA Water Wise program and our Water Safety Week in
the spring, serving 500 children.
In the healthy living arena we expanded our offerings to adults and
children with some new high intensity training classes, aqua strength
training and the return of flag football for the youngsters.
Our Sussex Y is growing with membership up 12% over 2013 and we
are keeping pace with that growth with facility enhancements like our
new lobby which created a more welcoming gathering place for members.
Our partnerships in the community are many, including Rehoboth Beach
- Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, Dewey Beach Lion’s Club, Tanger
Outlets, Beebe Hospital, Vegfest, Delmarva Broadcasting, the CHEER
Center, Dewey Beach Triathlon, the Cape Henlopen School District and the
Coastal Delaware Running Festival.
We helped our neighbors with $92,000 in direct financial assistance
so that all of our local children, families and individuals can enjoy the
benefits of belonging to our Y community. Thank you to all who made
that work possible.
As we look toward the future we hope to expand services throughout
Sussex County and be an anchor for full time residents and seasonal
visitors. Our plans include future expansion to a larger facility better
equipped to support the growth in our area and the needs of our
community members.

Dover
In 2014, the Dover YMCA experienced a 20% growth in membership which enabled us to grow our financial assistance to those in need as well as be
a more powerful asset to everyone in the community.
A $20,000 Palmer grant enabled us to provide
scholarships for older adults in Kent County.
New and ongoing partnerships with Bayhealth,
Kraft, Dover Downs, Halpern Eye Associates,
Del-One and the State of Delaware connected
employees with our wellness programs and
welcomed many new members to our branch.
As we grow, we look for new ways to maximize
our space, provide cutting edge classes for
all fitness levels, and reinforce the community
feeling of our Y.
It was our first full year of operation and
services at the Kent Outdoor Pool Complex,
welcoming our first summer swim team, lots
of campers every day and members and their
families with special events. We have continued
to invest in the outdoor complex with the
addition of a pavilion which enabled us to serve
160 children each week.
In the Capital School District we provided
before and after school child care in 4 sites
and provided the Dover High School swim team
practice and meet times. In the Caesar Rodney
School District we provided the high school
swim team practice and meet times. Through
a partnership with Dover Air Force Base, we
offered swim lessons, at a reduced fee, to
military families.
In partnership with the City of Dover, 50
summer campers were provided swim lessons
through our Water Wise initiative. A new
partner, Worship Christian Center, sent 10
children to our Water Wise drowning prevention
program.
Our longtime partner, Calvary Baptist Church,
worked with us again this year to offer Club 58,
a free program offering middle school students
a safe and supervised place to swim, dance,
exercise, play games and just “be kids.”
In partnership with The GIFT (Girls in
Fitness Together), we awarded 30 girls free
memberships to the Y. The girls participated in
the program twice a week for 20 weeks. The
group received nutritious snacks, nutritional
education, experienced a variety of fitness
activities, volunteered at some community
events, and had the opportunity to build
relationships with others and engage in
conversations about life/school balance, stress,
healthy behaviors, peer relationships, and social
issues. The GIFT program, due to its success,
was funded by the State of Delaware for the
following year for $50,000.
YEAR IN REVIEW
Western
The operative word for the Western Family YMCA as it relates to youth
development in 2014 is growth. Our efforts to develop and enhance the
camp experience resulted in 330+ campers each week last summer. Our
before and after school program grew to 325 students in two school
districts, and our preschool program continues to be a resource to
working families with 60 youngsters in attendance every day.
In 2014, we partnered with the Red Clay School District and the Baltz
Elementary School to deliver an extended school day program for
students struggling in the classroom. This is an evidence-based pilot
program which we anticipate will pave the way for our continued efforts
in tackling the achievement gap.
Healthy Living is an ongoing priority and we saw over 75,000
participants take part in the 300+ classess each month at Western. Our
weight loss challenge guided 50 members toward a more healthy body
weight by supporting and motivating them.
As we look back on 2014 we are pleased to say we awarded $814,000
in financial assistance, making a transformative YMCA experience
possible for 1000 people. Thanks to a new partnership with Humanim
we were able to host high school students in a collaborative work study
program. Proudly, all of our student interns are in school or are actively
working now and we look forward to this continued collaboration in the
summer of 2015.
Blessed as we are with so much pool and water on our property, we
taught hundreds of children and adults to swim, taught sportsmanship,
healthy competition and striving for personal best in our swim teams. We
also made the pools available for drowning prevention classes for free to
3rd graders.
We are a trusted community resource for lifeguard training, certifying 80
new lifeguards and recertifying 62 more, and we are sure that many tens
of thousands of laps were completed in our pools, far too many to count.
Neighbors, friends and families communed poolside last summer, enjoying
sun and fun in a safe pool environment.
Western staff and volunteers are working hard to deepen our impact in
the communities we serve through new and ongoing collaborations with
area businesses and other non-profit agencies.

Camp Tockwogh
We have all heard the word “magic” used in reference to our YMCA Camp
Tockwogh when trying to describe the intangibles which make it so
special. This year, we asked parents, staff, international counselors and
children to tell us what makes the experience so magical.
Parents tell us with wonder in their voices how their child suggested the
family should move more and not spend so much time watching television
after an active summer at camp. After taking part in our Leaders in
Training program, a daughter heads home, confident she will be hired as
a counselor next year.
A mom describes the new level of confidence her son exhibits as he
enters a large high school after spending the summer at Tockwogh.
She is no longer fearful that he will not adjust to this transition and is
sure these skills will follow him for a lifetime. One of our international
counselors had a powerful moment with a shy camper who was fearful
of the water and looking foolish as he learned to water ski. As he rose
to a standing position for the first time, the look on the camper’s face
is something he will never forget. Parents, campers, domestic and
international staff and alumni, every one of them can tell a powerful story
that conveys the magic of Camp Tockwogh.
We welcomed more than 1500 campers in 2014 with 55% of them
returning for another season. We hosted foster children as we always
do, providing a life-changing experience outside the challenges of city
life. Forty international staff representing 14 countries joined us, some
of whom were away from home for the first time themselves. Our Camp
boasts nearly 50% staff retention rate which is excellent considering
many complete college and must leave to seek year-round employment.
In the “off season” Camp Tockwogh hosted over 65 conference groups
including churches, schools, Girl and Boy scout troops, family gatherings
and weddings, reunions and alumni events.
Most importantly, we were there for any family who needed us, awarding
$207,937 in financial assistance to 236 families, making the magic of
Camp Tockwogh accessible to all. Family weekends continue to be a big
draw, giving adults and children the opportunity to unwind and connect in
a meaningful way- the beautiful setting contributing to the calm, relaxed
feeling.
