PRINCIPAL’S NOTES
School for Student Leadership
Ms Herbert has been successful in obtaining six places within the school for student leadership for 2017. This is a term-long
residential program available to year nine students with a focus on developing leadership skills. We have been lucky to have
been involved for a number of years – there is fierce competition for the limited numbers of places available for schools. At a
school level, prospective students are assessed based on application and interview. More details will follow later in the year
when the selection process commences.
The current students participating in the School for Student Leadership are in China, participating in a six week overseas
program. It is an extraordinary opportunity for our young people and I look forward to hearing of their journey.
School Assembly
Last Wednesday our student leadership team organised and ran a whole school assembly. It was particularly important for
the year 12 music students, as it provided important performance practice for them in the lead up to their final assessments.
It is unusual for a school of our size to offer VCE (year 11 & 12) music and we are proud of the opportunity we are able to
provide to your children. The music faculty has a great deal of expertise and I am continually impressed both at the talent of
our young people and the time and effort that the teaching staff put into their development.
Year Twelve Outdoor and Environmental Studies Ski Trip
The year twelve OES class is attending a ski camp this week. They are looking at the local environment from a number of

perspectives: habitat retention for the Mountain Pygmy Possum, impact of people on the natural environment, activities
which are undertaken by people in the natural environment, and comparing single sites at different times of the year. The
excursion will enable students to more accurately answer their exam questions.
One Act Play Festival
I commend the Mansfield Arts Council for their development of the One Act Play Festival – an interschool competition for the
performing arts conducted here at Mansfield last Friday. Our team of drama students submitted two productions into the
competition, under the tutelage of Ms Daniel. Whilst we were outclassed, with other teams able to avail themselves of
considerable more training time and able to access VCE Drama students, the learning experience for our students was
significant. Well done to those students involved!

The AFL finals are almost upon us but for Anthea
Wood’s year 9 maths class, the finals have just
been completed. Utilising a mix of statistical
analysis and AFL knowledge, students took part
in the online Fantasy AFL competition. Each
student (and Miss Wood and myself) selected a
team of 30 players using a team budget of $10
million. Players are assigned a price based on
their performance in real AFL games. Players
then score points according to their stats in the
weekend’s matches (e.g. kicks are worth 4
points, marks are worth 2 points). Student’s
teams competed against each other throughout
the season vying for a place in the top 8. Each
week students could make 2 trades. Injuries and
poor form meant that regular line-up changes were required. Some students relied on their football knowledge while
others utilised their mathematical skills to make calculated decisions. With a wide range of data available, average
scoring, price increases and recent scoring output all came into consideration. Every Friday the class were given time to
review their team and make trades and substitutions. Throughout the season, the competition heated up with many
teams starting to find form and compile very strong teams.
In ‘Brad’s League’, Nick’s Tigers (Nick Scales) came from 4 th place on the ladder to win the premiership, having knocked
the more favoured Freindly’s Team 1940 to 1855 in the Preliminary Final. Nick’s Grand Final score of 2109 showed that
he was a worthy winner.
‘Miss Wood’s League’ was hotly contested. The Border Collies (Anthea Wood) won the minor premiership and a grand
final showdown with Friendly’s team appeared to be on the cards. Once again, Nick’s Tigers caused a boil over to upset
Freindly’s team to make the Grand Final. The Border Collies looked strong heading into the Grand Final with a
comfortable 2115 to 1771 win over Joel’s All Stars (Joel Sanford) in the other preliminary final. Nick’s Tigers won another
premiership showing the pupil had become the tutor, winning 2109 to 2020 over The Border Collies.
The ‘MFL’ was a tough one to pick going into the finals. Huey’s Heckaz Jalapenos (Huey Madden) finished the regular
season on top of the ladder. However, his departure to the Mt. Buller Annexe in term 3 appeared to have cost him,
losing both finals to crash out without a fight. Up the Celts (Pat Mahoney) having lost their first final, won a classic
against crazymonkeys (Molly Cross) 1931 to 1916 and advanced to the preliminary final. Once again The Border Collies
and Freindly’s Team appeared destined for a Grand Final matchup. However, The Notorious LJB (Lily Bennett) had other
ideas and won comfortable 2079 ton 1855 over Freindly’s Team to reach the Grand Final. Friendly’s Team, the so-called
expert, lost 3 preliminary finals and surely goes down as the biggest choke in Fantasy AFL history. The Border Collies
were too strong for Up the Celts, setting up a showdown with LJB. The Notorious LJB pulled out a massive score of 2140
to easily account for The Border Collies to win the MFL Premiership.
Winners of the 9th-16th finals included Mansfield Fairies (Sammy Hardiman), Up the Celts (Pat Mahoney) and Caleb’s
Drop Kicks (Caleb Annuscheit).
Well done to all the winners and everyone for getting involved.

MT BULLER SLOPESTYLE AUG 6
The eagerly anticipated new Slopestyle event created a real buzz in the Skyline Park with a solid turnout of
great local slopestyle talent and plenty of spectators.
60 competitors took part in the ‘best of two runs’ format. The sunny conditions and fast course made for an
exciting day and some impressive tricks.
It was a great day for Mansfield riders, with the Rodden household taking home top two places, as both Jared and Talae dominated the Open Ski division with their captivating show of tricks.

CAREERS UPDATE
Year 10: I have prepared a handout folder which includes:



A lift out Section from the Herald Sun Students for Year 10
A booklet from VTAC Guide for year 10 students
And the ABC of Applying 2017
This should help families get a better idea of what is available subject and
course wise.
Students will be receiving this information about VCE subject selection ASAP. There will be an information
evening and also a ‘one on one’ counselling interview to confirm subject courses in mid to late August. If families would like to catch up with me regarding any concerns please ring the school or email
sampson.mark.m@edumail.vic.gov.au
Year 12: VATC applications for University and TAFE courses are now open. Google VTAC and make an account. Students will need their Student number to do this. See the Senior School Office or Mr Sampson for that
number. I am working with students to register over the next 2 weeks.

THE ARTS
Last week we were fortunate to have a second
visit from puppeteer Danielle Goronszy who
presented a workshop with Year 8 students on
the technique of using ‘cane’ to create and
structure puppets.

On Friday August 12th, the Mansfield Secondary College Drama Group participated in the Inaugural Mansfield
Arts Council Drama Festival. We had prepared two plays for the competition with all age groups in the school
represented in our casts.
The Year 7/8 play, entitled ‘It’s All About The Dress’ performed their modern take on the classic Cinderella story. For their efforts students were presented with an Encouragement Award, and in particular, Rose Hanratty
and Dylan Konig were also given Encouragement awards.
Our other play ‘Cluedo’ won an Honourable Mention for Lachlan Barrett, who played Inspector Blackstock in an
Agatha Christie like ‘Who dun it”.
The level of competition was very high with Trinity Anglican School from Albury/Wodonga and Lauriston Girls
School Howqua. Howqua Campus, sending 2-3plays each for the competition.
Dallas was extremely pleased with the performances of our students saying—”it was the best she had ever seen
our plays performed”.
Although Lauriston and Trinity scooped the awards, our actors all did extremely well and we are looking to having
the opportunity to perform our next play.
