Chers amis,
Our new FIAF is flourishing.
The Language Center, under the
leadership of Claire Bourgeois, has
a record attendance. It is a joy to
see and hear 100 toddlers—some
of them as young as 18-months
old—dancing and singing French
songs in our new program à petits
pas: French for Toddlers. Our
library, too, directed by Katharine
Branning, with its expanded hours
is receiving a record number of
visitors.

This fall, besides presenting
a large array of French artistic
talent, we are expanding our film
programming. We are happy to
introduce CinéKids, a once-amonth family film series. We are
also hosting two film festivals:
The Youth of Europe film series,
presented as part of the city-wide
European Dream Festival, and
Police Paris New York: From the
Streets to the Screen, featuring
French films written and directed
by former policemen.

The Paris-Val de Marne
Development Agency and the
Paris-Val de Marne Chamber of
Trade and Craft Industries are
pleased to present and promote
the sheer talent and expertise of
their local design professionals.
Award-winning filmmaker David
Grubin traces Marie Antoinette’s
journey from her childhood in the
palaces of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire to her final hours in a
French prison cell. This two-hour
film paints a portrait in which
Marie Antoinette emerges
as a sympathetic and courageous
figure whose tragic awakening
came too late to save her from the
guillotine. Celebrate the launch of Queen of
Fashion: What Marie Antoinette
Wore to the Revolution (Henry Holt
& Co) with author Caroline Weber.
Learn more about the following
designers, exhibiting their “savoirfaire” in the fields of Home Décor,
and Jewelry: Clément Djossou
(Lotta et Djossou), Marie-Claire
Meheut (Voyage de Perles).
Marie Antoinette is a David Grubin
Production in association with
Cinétévé for PBS in the United
States, ARTE in France and BBC
in the United Kingdom.
Weber illustrates how Marie
Antoinette’s choice of clothing was
central to the political upheavals
of her era. The Queen staged
“a veritable revolution in fashion,”
using her clothes as defiant
expressions of independence and
power to combat enemies.

C’était Duras
By Jean Vallier
Historian Christopher S. Thompson
tells the story of the world’s most
famous bicycle race in The Tour de
France: A Cultural History (California
University Press).
Jean Vallier will present his latest
work, a two-volume biography
about Marguerite Duras, one of
the most controversial French
writers of all time. The first
volume, C’était Duras, Tome 1,
1914-1945 (Editions Fayard), was
recently published in France.
His original account traces the
Tour from its creation in 1903 to
the present, and links it to key
moments and themes in French
history. Thompson, Associate
Professor of History at Ball State
University, will explain how
the itineraries of the Tour can be
used both to emphasize and undermine national unity and social
cohesion.

For his first NY appearance, popular
French comedian Gad Elmaleh
will go through the minutiae of
everyday life, examining anything
that catches his attention
or irritates him.
In this one-man show, he creates
a cast of hilarious and familiar
characters, such as the “Blond,” the
perfect guy who always succeeds
at what most people fail; or the
“Neanderthal,” the vaguely human,
very drunk person you come
across in the small hours. This
all-singing, all-dancing, all-miming
show is absolutely unmissable!
“This comedian is undoubtedly
the best of his generation.”
Le Progrès
As part of this fall’s European
Dream Festival, Danspace
Project welcomes French
choreographers Boris Charmatz
and Dimitri Chamblas in their
unflinching duet À Bras le corps.
A square of chairs on the floor will
define the performance area to
offer an intense perspective on
the choreography. Includes a
panel discussion with the artists.
Details to be announced.

Performed by Ensemble
for the Romantic Century
Eve Wolf & Max Barros,
Artistic Directors
Ensemble for the Romantic
Century (ERC), one of New York’s
most innovative chamber music
groups, creates a tableau of
Parisian life in the late-nineteenth
and early-twentieth centuries
through a series of four theatrical
concerts fusing theater, chamber
music and vocal music. Proust’s
Court of Love, the opening concert
of ERC’s 2006-2007 season, will
portray the author’s infatuations
and love affairs (veiled in his fiction)
and vivid recollections of salon
society through the music of
Debussy, Fauré, Hahn, Chausson,
Ravel, Saint-Saëns and Roussel.
