I will be stepping down at the next meeting in October. I have mixed emotions. On one hand I think the organization needs new leadership and new blood. On the other I will miss being "in charge" even though most will tell you I'm just a figurehead; Jean, Sandy and Karen really run things (mostly true too). the Vice President of the AGHOA for the past six years. The group of local governments called The C-470 Corridor Coalition began work on the project early last year. early last year, and the Public Outreach portion of the process is going on as I write this column. A number of Telephone Town Hall Meetings have been held with thousands of citizens participating. Additionally a number of Open Houses were held in mid to late September. The group's stated goals are: Hopefully some of you saw the 1. Develop and evaluate invitations and participated in those cost-effective options for funding C open houses. Evie is certainly the best thing that has ever happened to me. We celebrated with four of our five kids and their families including thirteen of our seventeen grandkids...what a great time! We thank all our friends and neighbors who have expressed their kind sentiments to us. We thoroughly enjoy living in this neighborhood, close to our kids and grandkids, and of course our great neighbors. Trees and Bushes need extra care this fall and winter In addition to the hot weather and lack of rain this summer, trees and bushes are stressed, which inhibits their ability to defend against disease and insects. To help trees and bushes, water when temps are above 50 degrees, at the drip line which is even with the outermost tips of the branches. Add mulch 2 inches away from the trunk. Acres Green Resident for 23 years Receive $10 off massage session by mentioning this ad! Candidate for AGHOA President My name is Karen Padrevita and I live on Mercury Drive. Like many, I have a long history in Acres Green and consider myself almost a native of the neighborhood. My family bought the house where I grew up in 1978 and I was 3 years old when we moved in. I have pictures of my house being built and the undeveloped space behind my house which is now Sweetwater Park and Lone Tree. I went to Acres Green Elementary and to Highlands Ranch when it was still a Jr. /Sr. High School. My husband and I bought that same house from my family in 1997 and now we are raising our family there. We have 2 boys, ages 9 and 7, and they keep my husband and I busy while we also juggle full time careers. I became involved with the Acres Green HOA 6 years ago when I happened to be at a meeting and found there was an empty seat on the Board for Vice President. I honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it felt right to become more involved in the community that I live in and raise my children in. One of the activities that I immediately took on as a volunteer was the annual 4th of July Children's Parade. This event has been a success each year and I truly enjoy seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and seeing our neighbors having the opportunity to meet one another. I have learned a lot from participating on the HOA over the years and one of the most valuable lessons has been that it doesn't take much to make a difference in our community. I've also had the great opportunity to Page 7 Locally owned and operated At Mountain View we provide: Seasonal contract discounts. Fast service (Most drives done in less than 10 minutes). This was most recently seen in 2011 when the school district proposed to install the solar panels. Many residents not only voiced their opinion, but became involved with researching and understanding what this meant for our community and considered the pros and cons. I am proud to live in Acres Green and I hear the same from many of my longtime friends and neighbors. We have a great community. October 2012 Jean Henke AGHOA Recorder & Publisher of the Greenleaf The last meeting of the AGHOA was held at the Lone Tree Brewery on June 21, 2012. There was a small group in attendance. We were pleased to try the Acres O’Green Red beer that evening. We would also like to thank the Lone Tree Brewery for making room for us at the site. The first order of business was a discussion regarding the new water tower, the progress and completion date. Once the tank is completed much work to landscape, fix the trail and the open space must be completed. A new 110,000 square foot Cabelas will be located in Lone Tree at I-25 at RidgeGate about a mile south of Park Meadows Mall. The stores will feature a gabled entry facade, fireplace, gun library, bargain cave, fudge shop and mountain replica, featuring North American game animals shown in a natural habitat setting Sandy presented the Treasurer’s report. There was not much activity. We had one returned check which resulted in a charge of $35. Other charges were delivery of the newsletter for April and June $500.00 and the charge from Excel for the light at the East entrance sign.. Available funds as of June 21 was $948.16. Upcoming bills include charges for the garden up to $250., and two deliveries of the newsletter for another $500. That brings us to the new membership year, which will start in Oct. so we are hoping to have some more funds coming in at that time. Karen mentioned that we have set up a PayPal account so that people can use that instead of sending a check in, which should save people time and postage. In addition this will reduce the time for funds to clear residents accounts. Residents don’t have to have a PayPal account in order to use this method to pay their dues. Jean reported on the front garden improvements. A couple of young men in the neighborhood helped to install brick edging along the sidewalk, added some rock where there were bare spots and mulch. The boys also helped trim the bushes that were growing into the paths. We had a budget of $250 for the front garden and needed to purchase a few more bricks to extend the edging past the place where the path comes into the sidewalk. Pat offered $20 toward that cost and Ron matched it with another $20 to help with the purchase. This was a good year to put in mulch and hardscape since it was so hot and we had no rain. Everyone agreed that the garden looks much better. The discussion next turned to the possibility of us working with South Suburban to get a permanent enclosure for the port-a-potty that they usually put in at Altair Park during the summer for the games. Pat is looking into that as a possibility for Matching Gifts next year. Pat mentioned that the Lone Tree celebration would be held as usual, wristbands and all. (This signs and had events planned including the fire truck. Garage sales were the next topic of discussion. It appears quite a bit of traffic came through the neighborhood in spite of the reduced advertising. People seem to be taking advantage of Craig’s list and others are reading those ads. Additionally we’ve seen similar community garage sale signs going up in other communities. Ron asked if it would be worthwhile to make an interactive map available on the website that would show people a list of items that are available for sale at individual sites. Matt indicated that there is already an app for that and so it looks like we should be able to give people instructions on how to do that for next year’s sale. Finally, talk turned to the election of a new President and Vice President for the AGHOA. Two home owners stepped forward to the challenge. See Ron’s story on page 1. meeting was held before all fireworks were banned this year. Lone Tree set off the fireworks on Labor Day weekend.) 3.
