DAVID DODDS, Hon FPPSA
Born Kisumu, KENYA 1954 -
Photographer and Film-maker with extensive experience in Africa.
Born David Michael Cochrane Dodds on the 10th September, 1954 in Kisumu, Kenya when it was still a Protectorate. Scottish and British lineage and British Citizen by birth. Has a naturalised
South African Dual-Citizenship. Middle son of three brothers, John being one year older, and Anthony 9 years younger.
Father: Peter Dodds of Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK. Born 23/03/1928. Peter’s parents: William John Dodds and Martha Lily Duke. Father’s Career path included service with the Palestine Police,
the Kenya Police, and Head of Family Planning in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe. Retired to Simonstown. Died in Kenya, May 2005.
Mother: Elizabeth Ann Cochrane of Nyeri, Kenya. Born 2/10/1926. Elizabeth’s parents: Basil and Anne Dundonald Cochrane. Direct descendants of Lord Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, buried
in Westminster Abbey. (DeBretts Peerage 13th Edition). Died in Simonstown, November 2004.
David lived in Kenya until he was 17 years old, in which time he attended schooling at Gresham’s in Norfolk, England. Scholastic achievements revolved
around achieving A levels in English & History. Hockey and acting were main interests, and David excelled at shooting and photography. He captained
the school Shooting in .22 and .303 disciplines and attended numerous Imperial Meetings at Bisley, Surrey, the world centre of long range target shooting
founded by Queen Victoria in 1870. He completed schooling, and represented the Great Britain Athelings Shooting Team to Canada in 1972. He finished
that event as the top cadet, and with the prestigious Viscount Wakefield Trophy.
The Kenyan policy of ‘africanisation’ forced his parents out of Kenya in 1971 and the whole family relocated to Salisbury, Rhodesia, later to become
Zimbabwe.

23
RHODESIA / ZIMBABWE 1972 - 1978
After less than a year at Hambro’s Bank, St. James, London, where David worked while his parents were moving to Rhodesia,
David moved back to Africa for a position as Junior District Officer in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This was a position of rural
administration at its most basic, supervising the local populations in everything from cattle dipping, to community up-liftment
and population registry. The rapidly deteriorating security situation finally turned the whole country into a war zone, and David
and his brother John, went for military training to try to cope as civilians in a military environment.
David received a posting on to Mount Darwin, the centre of Operation Hurricane and the peak of terrorist activities.
He continued the government rural assistance programme under trying military conditions, surviving severe wounding in
a vehicle ambush, and repelling a number of insurgent attacks with his staff whilst being heavily outnumbered. The high
degree of skill acquired from participation in International Shooting was put to effective use with David training the region’s
Government Staff, the Air Force and elite tactical units from the Military.
That it led to his survival in some of the particularly dire circumstances was a bonus.
During this time, the early interest in amateur photography became an overriding consideration, fuelled by the fact that
stunning picture opportunities were there on a daily basis.
David finally left for South Africa to study Professional Photography at the Durban Technikon in 1978.

SOUTH AFRICA 1978
After completing the 1st Year National Certificate, David’s portfolio was sufficiently strong to attract
interest from the magazine world of Republican Press, one of the largest publishing groups in South
Africa at that time. A Staff Contract offered work across the spectrum of all the company publications,
with the experience of a very large range of assignments, (the 1981 Seychelles Coup fiasco to nappychanging contests at the Red Cross) proving invaluable. After nearly 5 years in Durban, David set up
a professional studio for a year, and then moved to Johannesburg, the financial centre of South Africa.
Based out of a custom built studio, assignments for the next 15 years covered a broad range, from
advertising, beauty, fashion & travel, to corporate annual reports.
BUSINESS DIRECTIONS 1988-1996
The advent of the emerging DTP era, 1988 – 1991, with digital imaging and software packages related
to image manipulation, illustration and page layout prompted David to invest in leading technology and
Apple Mac workstations. He frequently consulted with corporate businesses in South Africa in those
early days, and lectured at workshops on the ever-changing nature of technology and systems related
to photographic and image manipulation.
David made it his business in the emerging DTP era to stay ahead-of-the-game, regularly attending
pre-press technology training at institutions in San Francisco, New York and at the Rochester Institute
of Technology, from 1992 to 1996.

PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECTS
PORTRAITS OF SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN
Completed a 10 Year Calendar project, (1991-2000), based on intimate portraits of South African Women.
It featured an ‘all races, all ages’ approach to the talented women of South Africa from all professions,
(from modeling, the media to the performing arts.) This approach was novel at the time, because of the
deep polarisation of South African society that was widely vilified right around the world in the media.
National publications continue to use the images for ‘then and now’ illustrations, based on the extraordinary
transition of South Africa from apartheid to democracy in the middle of that era.
PORTFOLIO SOUTH AFRICA 2002

SPORT
David has a unique talent related significantly to much of the skills needed in photography: a sense of
timing, a consistent vision and a cool disposition under pressure. The education system in England introduced
David to the world famous target shooting ranges of Bisley Camp, Brookwood in Surrey, and to the prestige of
the annual events of the British Long Distance Shooting Championships.
Queen Victoria instituted skilled marksmanship in 1870 and the incumbent Monarchy have been the Patrons of
the Events ever since, culminating every year in Her Majesty The Queen’s Prize. Since that introduction as a
schoolboy, David’s interest in Long Range Target Rifle shooting has continued at the highest level.
After appearing for Britain against Canada in 1972, and for Kenya in 1973, he continued top level competition
in the Rhodesian Armed Forces, and with the Fullbore participants at Cleveland Range, Salisbury, 1974-1978.
David first appeared in the South African National Protea Team in 1994, and has been a critical and integral
part ever since.
Personal Shooting Records
South African National Champion: Winner 1994, 1998 and 2000
Commonwealth Games: Canada in 1994, Malaysia in 1998, and England in 2002.
The 2002 effort resulted in partner Peter Bramley and David winning the Silver Medal in the Pairs Match. Four days later, David won the Silver in the Individual Championship.
This represents a Double-Medallist status, and a record by any fullbore target shooter from Africa. Still unbroken
in 2015.
South Africa Team Member; The International Palma Match, the ‘World Cup’ of Shooting.
Hosted every four years like the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, the Event is conducted over two
days at the distances of 800, 900 and 1000 yards with full National Teams of 25 squad members.
