Antique Roses in a Kyle, Texas Garden By Sandra Sigler Plum Creek Landscape Committee As I entered the home of my father-in-law, Dr. Bob, I marveled at his roses. He spent an enormous amount of time caring for them – trimming, watering, fertilizing, and spraying for black spot! I thought, “No! Not for me, not roses! I live a much too busy lifestyle.” However, after moving to New Braunfels and then to Kyle, I discovered The Antique Rose Emporium of San Antonio, and my prejudice changed. Now, my husband and I have sixtyeight ( 68 ) roses nestled in our yard at 395 Haupt, and I am a strong advocate for antique roses. Roses, particularly, the older varieties, known as antique roses, come in many forms. They are known as the most versatile outdoor garden plant in existence. You will find a variety of color, varying qualities of fragrance, and a multitude of sizes as they climb, ramble, and trail in your garden. Plus, antique roses require little care. Trim them back February 14, fertilize three times a year, and marvel at their beauty the rest of the time! Why can’t all plants be so simple… and so rewarding? With size and shape in mind, I am an advocate not for rose gardens but for gardens with roses in them. The difference is notable, because while one can be linear and boring, the other is diverse and dynamic! Throw in plumbago, esperanza, larkspur, garlic chives, homestead verbena, and crape myrtles with your roses. The list of combinations is endless. Gardening becomes an expression created by the mixtures you toss INSIDE together. It is both City Council Notes.. 8 infinite and personal Local Calendar of – not to mention, fun! Charlie is a retired self employed business man. His last venture was an Art Gallery. Bunny is newly retired from teaching. Family: We have a daughter, Ashley, living in Austin, and a son Darren living with his wife in the Washington D.C. area. How did you choose to live in Plum Creek? Moving from CO back home to TX after a 19 year vacation. Wanted to be closer to our older parents, and our daughter. The Hill Country area was our only option, and we fell in love with the Legacy model home. How do you like the neighborhood? Neighborhood is great. The traditional look and rear entry garage is important to us. We chose Plum Creek over Sun City in Georgetown because we felt all the 2 young families would keep us younger. Do you have a favorite local restaurant? The Country Deli is very nice and has great food. The Donut shop on Burleson is also pretty special. We have decided now that we are retired, no one can tell us what we can and cannot eat. Hobbies/Interests? Bunny likes to read and we both are learning to play golf. Charlie is switching from Colorado “Catch and release fly fishing” to Texas Bass fishing. We have played Bridge for 30 years. Our morning walks are special, and Charlie likes to play poker. What is one thing about you that most people would be surprised to know? Bunny is Bunny’s real name. Charlie played in the World Series of Poker at Binion’s Golden Horse Shoe in Las Vegas in 2004. He didn’t win, but Johnny Chan was at his first (and last) table. April 2006 Come Out To The New Pool Grand Opening April 1 No Fooling! On January 28, 2006, Kyle’s City Council held a Strategic Planning Workshop to layout goals for the City and establish a framework for accomplishing those goals through measurable objectives. What came out of that Workshop is a planning tool that Citizens, Council, and City Staff can use to identify and track the progress of each of the City’s projects from conception to completion, including summary, scope and task list / timeline. Council approved utilization of this planning tool during the regular City Council meeting on March 6th. In terms of goals or major categories, the Council looked at Planning, Economy, Mobility, Safety, Responsible Government, Quality of Life, and Public Facilities. Under each of those categories, sets of objectives were prioritized. For instance, under the category of Mobility, the City is in the process of implementing its Transportation Plan and is looking at Alternative Transportation for the future. But how does that impact us as citizens of Kyle? City Staff continues to work on a number of road projects that will directly impact mobility. The FM1626 Extension and the Kyle Parkway Railroad Overpass (the first such overpass in Hays County) are quickly coming to completion. This project will not only allow residents and emergency vehicles to travel East-West without having to wait for the train, but will be a major public safety improvement for the region. The City, in partnership with TxDOT, has also commenced widening and construction on the I-35/Center Street Overpass, in addition to taking on the responsibility for the reconstruction of both Kohler’s Crossing and Kyle Crossing (Dry Hole Road). In the way of Alternative Transportation, projects like a series of connecting Hike-and-Bike Trails, the addition of public sidewalks on Sledge Street, and the proposed FM1626/Kyle Parkway Commuter Rail Stop are in progress. But this does not mean that the City is solely obsessed with road projects. City Staff are hard at work on important issues like developing alternative water sources, creating local jobs, attracting retail development and retaining local businesses, increasing support in the areas of recreational programs, police, fire and EMS, making a commitment to safe and healthy families, increasing our civic involvement, and building our relationships with surrounding government entities. On Sunday, April 9th, we will host the Public Open House and Dedication of the City’s new Administration Continued on page 19 8 April 2006 Tips For April Days in The Garden By Christina Baese Landscape Committee Member 1. Finish planting. It’s time to get the remainder of your annuals, perennials, ornamental grasses, summer bulbs, shrubs, and trees in the ground before the summer heat hits. 2. Fertilize established trees, shrubs, lawns, and plants. Try Lady Bug 8-2-4, Garrett Juice, Seaweed, John’s Recipe, Medina Soil Activator, Lady Bug Terra Tonic, or another great compost tea. With a product like seaweed or John’s Recipe, you can simply cover your lawn and gardens 3. Pull or treat weeds before they go to seed. Although it’s hard work, pulling weeds is the best method for ridding your garden of the pesky critters. Another solution is layering newspaper on bare soil, which invites weeds. Make sure it is well overlapped, slightly damp, and about four pages thick. Then, just cover it with an inch of compost and two inches of cedar mulch. Over time, the newspaper breaks down and with the compost, improves your soil quality. 4. If you missed it in March, topdress your lawn ASAP. 5. Get mowing! Mow every 5 to 7 days or frequently enough to only remove 1/3 of the blade. Keep your zoysia and bermuda lawns at 1.5 to 2 inches high. Don’t forget to leave the clippings, too! 6. Prune any spring flowering shrubs or trees after they bloom. Remove any dead plant material or branches that cross and rub. Prune any remaining cane by 1/3. As a guideline, prune 1⁄4 inch above a bud at a 45-degree angle. 7. Water deeply and infrequently. This system promotes deeper roots and helps conserve water. Recently, Kyle entered into Stage 2 Drought status, which means no outdoor watering between 10:00AM and 7:00PM and no installation of new landscapes. 8. Walk through your garden daily or enjoy your morning coffee on the patio! Just taking a stroll through your garden every day can help you find any rising problems with black spot or bad bugs. 9. Try an experiment and plant some vegetables or seeds to spruce up the garden or your front porch. Make it a fun project for the family by planting sunflower seeds or some catnip for the family kitty cat. It’s a great time to plant peppers or tomatoes in pots, too. With these few simple tips, we can all have lovely and healthy lawns and gardens. If you have any questions about your lawn or garden, E-mail us at plumcreeklandscaping@yahoo.com . 210 South Main Street Buda, TX 78610 (512) 312-1947 At the corner of Main & FM 2770 Award winning Smoked meats Homemade sides & Tasty treats! Initial planning has begun for this year’s Front Porch Days Event, to be held May 6 and 7 all over Plum Creek. Saturday the 6 will be the community-wide garage sale and there may be other events as well (possible golf clinics/tournaments, cycle-cross race, 5K run) and Sunday will be the main event with music, activities, games, vendors, food, and of course the pie baking contest. This year’s event organizers are going all out on ways to make sure everyone is included in the good times, so stay tuned for further info. To volunteer or participate contact Brandee Otto @ brandeelotto@yahoo.com. See article on page 24 for more information. Transportation Update The new extension of FM 1626 will be completed and opened during May. This 3 mile road extension includes the first rail road overpass in Hays County and will provide superior access to IH-35 from Plum Creek. The City of Kyle is finalizing plans of the expansion of Kohler’s Crossing and it is looking like Kohler’s will extend out to a new IH-35 frontage road and will receive its own dedicated southbound IH35 exit. The construction of Kohler’s should take 12 months, but the road will remain operational during that period. Also coming this summer will be the addition of a continuous turn-lane from Kohler’s to FM 150 on FM 2770. Plum Creek Development paid for TXDOT to do this improvement for safety and mobility reasons, and the asphalt road overlay will be completed during the summer. Lastly, Dry Hole will also be upgraded during 2006 with a three-lane section extending north from Kohler’s towards the Home Depot. All in all, every road that boarders or bisects Plum Creek will be improved during 2006. Plum Creek Community Center Feedback Wanted Have you or your organization used the new community center? If so, please let us know what you thought and what suggestions you have to make your next meeting/ event even better – email comments to plumcreekinfo @austin.rr.com. (please include organization name or event type) Neighborhood Safety Tips From the National Crime Prevention Council Unfortunately no neighborhood is completely immune to crime. However, there are steps you can take to help keep your family and your neighborhood safe. Know where your children are. Have your children tell you or ask permission before leaving the house and give them a time to check in or be home. When possible, have them leave a phone number of where they will be. Help children learn important phone numbers. Have your children practice reciting their home phone number and address, and your work and cell phone numbers. If they have trouble memorizing these, write them down on a card and have them carry it at all times. Tell your children where you will be and the best way to reach you. Set limits on where your children can go in your neighborhood. Do you want them crossing busy roads? Playing in homes being built where there are inherent dangers? Are there certain homes in your neighborhood that you don’t want your children to go to? 12 Get to know your children’s friends. Meet their parents before letting your children to go to their home and keep a list of their phone numbers. If you can’t meet their parents, call and talk to them. Ask what your children might do at their house and if they will be supervised. Choose a safe house in your neighborhood. Pick a neighbor’s house where your children can go if they need help. Point out other places they can go for help, like stores, businesses, and model homes. Teach children to settle arguments with words, not fists. Role-play talking out problems, walking away from fist fights, and what to do when confronted with bullies. Remind them that taunting and teasing can hurt friends and make enemies. Work together with your neighbors. Watch out for suspicious and unusual behavior in your neighborhood. Get to know your neighbors and their children so you can look out for one another. April 2006 Plum Creek IMpressED - Pizza Classics By Sean Claes A few months ago I was in Kyle during the lunch hour because I had jury duty and I saw that local pizza slingers Pizza Classics had a lunch buffet. I decided to pop in. Now, I moved to Kyle a few years ago and I wasn’t really impressed with the service I recieved a few times and the product wasn’t really to my liking... but I heard they had a new owner (not sure the truth to that...) and so I decided to give it a chance. What impressed me right away was how I was treated. The owner asked me what pizza I wanted and I asked for a pepperoni/jalapeño (try it.. you’ll love it) and he made it right away... for the buffet! There’s a small area where the pizzas are on display for the buffet, but they had 3 different kinds on the warmer as well as these fantastic pepperoni rolls (they were akin to the ones you get at Double Daves in anyone is familiar..but I liked these better, if that’s possible). The buffet ran about $6 and included all you care to eat and drink. The service was fantastic and the friendliness is what is going to keep me coming back. Pizza Classics is at 200 W Center St and they deliver (268-1979) as well as serve in-store.... I think it’s about time for lunch... buffet anyone? MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR - THIS COULD BE YOU OK... this is the Lynch family. They were the “Meet The Neighbor” subjects for September 2005. Wouldn’t you like to be a “Meet The Neighbor” subject? Membership is open to all athletes, of any level of experience – beginners to the highly experienced – adults and children, we all have something to offer and to learn. At the club’s Charter Meeting on Monday, March 13th they selected an interim Executive Committee, Board Members and discussed some organizational fundamentals. There were approximately 20 people in attendance at this first meeting. The founders of the club are Keith & Lisa Barber and Chuck & Jennifer Moerbe. Keith, the interim President, has been racing since 1998, is a member of Austin Triathlete’s and USAT, and will be a USAT Certified Instructor, as of this summer. 16 Some of the goals of this new club will be to provide organized training, a social atmosphere for fellow athletes (which will include guest speakers), coaching clinics, race information and local event planning. April 2006 Continued from page 1 Antonio, shares with me, “Roses on display are living antiques from the past. Many of these roses were popular in the gardens of early Texans and throughout the Old World. Unlike replicas of antique furniture or art, these roses are actual descendants of plants from more than 2000 years ago. Propagated by cuttings from the mother plant, they spread charm and enjoyment to the busy gardener today.” On Sunday, May 7, the Plum Creek Landscape Committee welcomes Ms. Will and The Antique Rose Emporium to Plum Creek. She will spread her vast knowledge as she presents “Falling in Love with Antique Roses” at the Plum Creek Community Center at Fergus and Haupt from 2:00 to 3:30pm. Ask her all sorts of questions as she informs us about antique roses in the Kyle, Texas garden. Ask her, “What is a repeat bloomer? What Rose Emporium. (With Mother’s Day on May 14th, who could think of a better gift for that special lady?) is a rose rustler? What about roses in containers?” Trust us, she can answer just about anything! In coordination with Front Porch Days, we offer you an hour and a half presentation on antique roses. We will serve lemonade, iced tea, and cookies and have loads of information for you to take home. Kids will have the chance to plant sunflower seeds. Plus, after the presentation, you will have the opportunity to purchase antique roses from Ms. Will and The Antique So come and listen from 2:00 to 3: 30pm and take a rose home with you. Yes, it’s that time of the year and starting in April, your friendly PC Landscape Committee members will be scouring the neighborhood looking for yards in contention for the award. You, too, may make nominations for the YOM award by sending an E-mail to plumcreeklandscaping@ yahoo.com by the 14th of the month. Then on the 15th judging will take place, and awards will be made on the first of the month. July 2005 Yard of the Month - 295 Hutton For our new neighbors, to be eligible for an award, you must be in good standing by being up-to-date with your Homeowners Association (HOA) dues and assessment payment and in compliance with the (HOA) guidelines for care and maintenance of your lawn. Your plants, shrubs, turf, and trees must be approved for use in Plum Creek. Sadly, last year, one yard that was in the running for Yard of the Month had a large patch of grass that had been allowed to spread and grow that is not approved for PC lawns. Some of this comes up voluntarily; however, it should not be allowed to spread. Also, there are some shrubs that are not authorized, such as Red Tip Photinias, which are being planted. These are also prohibited. Yes, there are some that have been allowed to remain in some of the yards of the first homes built in Plum Creek. Those were planted by the builders and before the list of approved plants, shrubs, and trees had been prepared. Those have been “grandfathered.” At such time as these shrubs die, they may not be replaced with the “Red Tip”. As a caution, our rain hasn’t been sufficient to lift our voluntary watering guidelines. Please, let’s do our part to insure we conserve and use our water efficiently. 18 April 2006 Neighborhood Social Groups By Brandee Otto On Wednesday, March 8, Plum Creek had an open house at the center for neighbors to give input about forming social groups. Quite a few nice neighbors showed and signed up for groups. Probably Bunco and Poker were the most popular, and dinner groups and golf were interests for several residents. Many young mothers were interested in creating a baby-sitting co-op. We still would like to hear from neighbors who couldn’t make it that night. Bridge & old cars are still possibilities. Charlie Welch has volunteered to head up the Poker group and will be getting a poker party together in April at the center he will contact the neighbors who expressed an interest. Hopefully we can have 10-20 players, and play some two (or more) table Texas Hold’em tournaments. More to follow about this. If you would like to get Bunco, Dinner groups, or a babysitting co-op organized, your help would be greatly appreciated! Please contact Brandee Otto at 405-0159 or Brandeelotto@yahoo.com if you have an interest in being involved in a social group, or would help start a group. Thanks, neighbors. Continued from page 8 Building. Like many of our events, it will be family-friendly and everyone is invited. The first council meeting in the new building will be on April 18th. One thing that we are trying to do is to put together a golf tournament on Saturday afternoon (after the garage sale) for anyone that in interested. The tournament would be a 4-person scramble, and it would take place at Plum Creek Golf course. We are still working out some details on this, but I need to find out how many teams would be interested in participating. The cost per team is still being worked on but I will let you know on the high end it would be $300.00 per team and we must have at least 12 teams to have the tournament. The team fee would go towards, golf, prizes and food/beverages. If you are interested in getting a team together for this event, please contact me. If we don’t do a golf tournament, another option that Plum Creek Golf course has offered is a free Golf Clinic, on Saturday afternoon. I need to find out which event you would most like to have.
