Solution Provider Programme - 2012 2 Steps for Deployment Steps for deployment 2 Steps for Deployment > 2 Understand the Market. There are a number of ways to determine who the Solution Provider market leaders are. Some resources include: “IBM is strongly supportive of GS1 standards, so we stay up to date on the latest direction and status of standards development and adoption through our membership. This helps us develop solutions aligned with the standards and to advise our clients on how to enhance business value through standards adoption.” Susan J. Wilkinson, Smarter, Global Consumer Products Centre of Competence, IBM Global Business Services Industry Reports, Case Studies and Overviews There is a wealth of information on Solution Providers in various categories, from analysts’ published reports and case studies, to overviews and buyer guides. Gartner’s Magic Quadrant reports • highlight the market leaders, challengers, niche players and visionaries. IBISWorld • provides in-depth sector overviews (global and country specific for US, UK, and Australia). Market Leaders and Influencers influential companies and those who have the broadest deployment. Once these vendors are onboard and promoting GS1, others will follow. Understanding Solution Providers Business Drivers The reasons Solution Providers join GS1 are very different to End User reasons. Understanding the business drivers is key to developing your value proposition for Solution Providers. What are the Business Drivers? • Expanding into a new geographic location. • Meeting customer demands for support of GS1 standards. • Developing new products based on a new technology. Other Sources of Information • Establishing themselves as thought leaders on a particular Buyer’s guides • RFID Journal, AIM Global, and NRF can be accessed at no cost. Conferences • review industry conferences to see which Solution Providers are speaking or sponsoring important events. Thought leaders • r esearch and identify which Solution Providers are regularly quoted in industry journals and are publishing white papers on relevant supply chain subjects. End user community • ask whom their trusted solution and System Integration Partners are. topic. • Looking for lead generation opportunities. Why and how Solution Providers will work with a GS1 Member Organization will vary greatly based on these specific goals. Know whom to work with in the Solution Provider Organization It is important to identify and work with the right people within the Solution Provider organisation. You must understand the different roles within the SP organisations and what each role considers most important. Below are some examples of different roles within an organisation and what they bring to the table. Solution Provider Programme - 2012 What they do and what they care about • Are they looking to expand into your geographic location? Technical Standards workgroup representatives • Bring knowledge about viability of standards implementation, customer needs, and technology trends. • Provide their company with advance awareness of new standards that will impact their solutions. • Influence GS1 standards development, so they don’t disadvantage their company’s solutions. • Do they have an industry focus locally that aligns with the • Look for opportunities to interact with end users to better understand business requirements. • Understand the product enhancements needed and the business benefits for their customers. Assess needs and add to their product roadmap. business opportunity. If not, it will be difficult to get the Product/ Solution Managers Sector Managers • Typically is responsible for the Profit & Loss (P&L) for an industry such as consumer products, healthcare, automotive, etc. • Understand why GS1 standards are important to and valued by the end user companies in this industry. Marketing Teams • Promote their products or solutions to GS1 Members. Business Development Teams • Know how to increase their revenue from solution or services sales. System Integration/ Services Delivery Teams • Ask what the implementation implications are and what needs to be done to get the customer up and running using the GS1 standards. • They develop a substantial service revenue stream. They question how GS1 standards will help grow an existing service offering. MO industry focus activities? • Does an opportunity exist for them to generate sales leads through your community engagement and marketing activities? If so, your value proposition will be clear and align with their local attention of these global companies. Other questions to consider include: • Are you willing to consider joint projects, where the SP offers time and resources in lieu of a fee? • Are there opportunities to work together with an industry association to promote the benefits of GS1? • Is there an active local user group with whom you can work to have the customers raise GS1 issues/opportunities in your country? (SAP, Oracle, and IBM all have active user groups). • If the Global Solution Provider has become GS1 MO accredited in another country or has certified a product through another GS1 MO, are you willing to recognise that expertise and include them when your customers are looking for solutions? • Does the Global Office (GO) have a relationship with the Global SP where materials (whitepapers, case studies, recorded webinars, etc.) may be available through GO or another MO that you can leverage locally? Considerations When Working with Global Solution Providers To understand how conclusions are made on the standards the company will support, you need to know if the global organisation makes decisions as a whole or if each individual business unit or product unit decides. Many of the Solution Providers who work with GS1 provide products and services to customers in more than one country. These Global Solution Providers will not join over 100 individual MO SP programmes. Therefore, understanding the company’s business drivers will help to identify those companies most interested in engaging locally in your country. © kotoyamagami - fotolia.com Solution Provider Programme - 2012 2 Steps for Deployment Role 2 Steps for Deployment > 3 Define the Value Proposition Influence Participate in the development of global supply chain “SAP and GS1 have many customers in common. It will: • Explain the role of product dimension data in store operations, shipping and other supply chain performance • Highlight common package measurement and data quality problems • Discuss the relationship between product dimension data, data quality and data synchronization • Present examples and research that document the business value gained by improving product dimension data • Provide an overview of the GDSN Package Measurement Rules and related resources • Identify solution providers with a proven track record of helping companies implement successful package measurement and data quality programs For consumer goods manuFacturers and retailers, slight variations in product height, width, depth or weight can have a cascading eFFect that creates larger problems Maintaining correct product dimension data is also essential for data quality, and thus impacts the effectiveness of data synchronization and other efforts that rely on accurate information. unfortunately, dimension data is wrong for up to 90 percent of consumer products, and 76 percent of products in planograms do not conform to their listed heights or widths.1 incorrect packaging From the shelF through the supply chain. measurements and measurement data have been identified as leading sources of data quality problems, non-compliance with planograms and retailer scorecards, and inefficient merchandising practices that cost retailers and consumer goods manufacturers 7 Reference Documents billions in unrealized revenue each year. Solution Provider Programme - 2012 Dimensional data is either right or wrong; there is no in between. If package measurements are off, or the product isn’t within its specified weight tolerance, that means the fundamental master data about that item is wrong. Overall data quality is compromised, and so are all the business processes, automated transactions and trading partner relationships that depend on it. Because dimension data is a fundamental component of master data, errors directly impact data synchronization. Packaging that doesn’t match specifications is a widespread problem. A major study found that 90 percent of consumer goods had at least one error in height, width or depth dimensions, and that one in five was off by at least 25 percent.2 Variations aren’t always apparent to the naked eye, nor is the direct effect on the bottom line. However the impact is there, and can be strong. Sub-optimal merchandising practices — including out-of-stocks and non-compliance with planograms — cost retailers up to 1 percent of gross sales annually, representing more than $10 billion annually in the food, drug and mass merchandise channels alone.3 Planograms are notoriously difficult to maintain and keep in compliance. Is it any wonder why, since 90 percent of products aren’t actually their stated size? Planogram problems are just one example of the real costs that result from data quality problems. A Gartner study of more than 140 companies in various industries and geographic regions revealed that participating organizations estimated they are losing an average of US$8.2 million annually as a result of data quality issues.4 Moreover, in a 2009 GS1 UK report, an 80 percent inconsistency was found across a group of nearly 18,000 items as well as astonishing levels of outof-stock items, resulting in an estimated US$450 million in lost sales over five years.5 Solution Provider Programme - 2012 what happens when product dimension data is wrong? When actual products do not match their packaging dimensions, the impact is felt on the shelf, in the truck, in the warehouse, throughout the supply chain and on the bottom line. A product not fitting the allocated shelf space is the most easy example to imagine, but is not the most common. Inaccurate product dimension data may more commonly result in manual workarounds to modify planograms, the inability to optimize fleet utilization, inaccurate master data, non-compliance with retailer scorecards and impaired data synchronization. The following sections highlight these issues. on the shelF Millimeters matter. Dimensional data errors were identified as one of the top causes of planogram non-compliance.6 Depth errors were the most common, while height was potentially the most expensive to correct. Width errors are particularly problematic. Approximately three quarters of products did not match their specified widths, with the slight variations adding up to an average of one foot per shelf space for the average section. Margins are simply too narrow to allow gaps that large. The National Association for Retail Merchandising Services (NARMS) provides proof — it found that stores that attain sustainable compliance with planograms can realize a 7.8 percent gain in sales lift and an 8.1 percent increase in profitability.7 in distribution operations Accurate product dimensions are essential for optimizing space efficiency. That is true in the warehouse and in the delivery truck, just as it is in the shelf. Maintaining accurate dimension data enables businesses to plan and utilize warehouse space more efficiently, pack pallets and cases more tightly and load trucks more fully. There are real-world examples to show the business value of doing so. As part of its initiative to double its fleet efficiency, Walmart examined numerous aspects of its operations, including how it loaded trucks. This led to a careful look at pallet sizes and how loads were configured. Walmart saw opportunities for improvement and made corresponding changes to loading processes. In its 2010 Sustainability Report, Walmart noted “although we continue to look for new loading patterns and methods, we are reaching our weight and/or volume capacities on almost every load.” Accurate dimension data prevents two types of problems with truck loading. If packaging is smaller than the expected size, there will be space left over in the loaded truck — representing unused capacity. If shipments are larger than expected, all the pallets may not fit, necessitating an additional run. For Walmart, monitoring product dimensions and optimizing loading has had a strong payoff. The company achieved some of its 10-year efficiency improvement goals in just three years, and credits optimized truck loading by helping improve fleet efficiency by 60 percent. In 2009, Walmart delivered 77 million more cases while driving 100 million less miles. The experience is also driving changes in the supply chain. Walmart now requires dimensional data from its suppliers, and measures it on the supplier scorecard. in the enterprise and the supply chain Not all packaging dimension errors impact distribution or in-store operations, but they all do result in inaccurate master data, which ensures the impact will be felt throughout the enterprise and the supply chain. Product weights and measures represent master data that is linked to the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), which is the key to item identification and deriving value from the GS1 Standards that form the global language of business. As noted, if dimension data is wrong, master data 7 Reference Documents sizing the problem of product packaging — a key to successful data synchronization.
