BILLIE JEAN KING
Co-Founder, World TeamTennis
Visionary • Innovator • Champion
Born: November 22, 1943
Birthplace: Long Beach, Calif.
Residence: New York, N.Y.
As one of the 20th century’s most respected and
influential people, Billie Jean King has long been a
champion for social justice and equality. She created
new inroads for both genders in and out of sports during
her legendary career, and she continues to make her
mark today. Among her many accomplishments are:
• On August 12, 2009, King was awarded the Presidential
Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
The first female athlete to be honored with the
Medal of Freedom, King was presented the award by
President Obama in ceremonies at The White House.
• Named one of the “100 Most Important Americans of
the 20th Century” by Life Magazine in 1990.
• Won 39 Grand Slam singles, doubles and mixed doubles tennis titles, including a record 20 titles at
Wimbledon.
• In 2008 King authored Pressure is a Privilege: Lessons I’ve Learned from Life and the Battle of the Sexes to
commemorate the 35th anniversary of her historic 1973 match against Bobby Riggs.
• Was one of nine players who broke away from the tennis establishment and accepted $1 contracts from
tennis promoter Gladys Heldman in Houston. The revolt led to the birth of women’s professional tennis
and the formation of the Virginia Slims Tour and Women’s Tennis Association.
• Empowered women and educated men when she defeated Bobby Riggs in one of the greatest moments
in sports history – the Battle of the Sexes in 1973. This match is remembered for its effect on society and its
contribution to the women’s movement.
• Founded the Women’s Tennis Association (1973), the Women’s Sports Foundation (1974), Women’s Sports
Magazine (1974) and co-founded GreenSlam, an environmental initiative for the sports industry (2007).
• In 1974 King co-founded World TeamTennis (WTT), the revolutionary professional tennis league. Now in its
39th season and known as Mylan World TeamTennis, the league showcases the best in professional team
tennis competing for the King Trophy. Also founded the Mylan WTT Recreational League, one of the most
popular recreational tennis formats in the U.S.
• Appointed Global Mentor for Gender Equality by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) in 2008; received the NCAA Gerald R. Ford Award in 2009; honored with Major
League Baseball’s Beacon of Change Award in 2010; and named to the Presidential Delegation to the 2014
Winter Olympics.
• Continues to be a leader in the fight for equality and recognition in the GLBT community, and has been
honored by many of the leading GLBT organizations, including the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD and
Lambda Legal Foundation.
• Honored on August 28, 2006, when the National Tennis Center, home of the US Open, was renamed the
USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in honor of King’s contributions to tennis, sports and society
both on and off the court. She continues to be involved with the USTA and is currently Honorary Chair of
the Tennis in the Parks Committee.
• A member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition and serves on the boards of the
Women’s Sports Foundation, the Andy Roddick Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

ilana kloss
CEO/Commissioner, Mylan World TeamTennis
Born: March 22, 1956
Birthplace: Johannesburg, South Africa
Residence: New York, N.Y.
Mylan World TeamTennis CEO/Commissioner Ilana Kloss
knows firsthand how the sport of tennis can connect and
inspire. At age 11, she was a ball kid for the South African
Open, a men’s and women’s pro tournament in Kloss’
native South Africa. One of the top players hit a few balls
with her and told Kloss’ father Shlaim that his daughter
had real potential. That was all an aspiring young tennis
player needed to hear. “When I heard that I really began
to dream about the possibilities and work towards being
the best player I could be,” said Kloss.
Four decades later, Kloss is still inspired by tennis, now
as the CEO/Commissioner of Mylan World TeamTennis
which was co-founded by Billie Jean King and thenhusband Larry King in the 1970s. While King’s current role
is primarily as a spokesperson, advisor and global ambassador, it’s Kloss who heads up the day-to-day efforts
to secure sponsorships and grow the team tennis concept both in the U.S. and internationally. In early 2009,
Kloss brought the United States Tennis Association (USTA) on board as a minority owner of World TeamTennis. The USTA works with WTT on a number of growth initiatives, including youth participation in team tennis.
Kloss, who was recognized as Sports Business Woman of the Year by the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center
in 2007, was recently elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted during
the Maccabiah Games in July 2013. In September 2010, Kloss was honored by the U.S. International Club
(USIC) with the Sarah Palfrey Danzig Award for her contributions as a player and administrator. She was also
recognized as a Gamechanger in October 2011 by Sports Business Journal as one of the top women in sports
business.
Kloss’ passion for WTT’s unique format and community appeal is evident when she speaks about how Mylan
WTT stands out in the sports landscape. “WTT is about both men and women competing together on a level
playing field. Our vision is to grow tennis and make it a true team sport. With Mylan WTT, we are able to
bring the best professional players to local communities where kids can see them working together as a team.
That’s an important inspirational message.”
“Mylan WTT is also about giving communities a sense of ownership in tennis and a connection to our players,”
adds Kloss. “We provide a level of access and involvement fans generally can’t get with other sports.”
Kloss was just a kid herself when she became the youngest No. 1 in South African tennis history at age 17. By
the time she turned 20, she was the top-ranked doubles player in the world, winning doubles titles at the U.S.
Open, Italian Open, U.S. Clay Courts, German Open, British Hard Courts and Hilton Head in 1976. Kloss also
added the 1976 French Open Mixed Doubles Championship with Kim Warwick.
Kloss played World TeamTennis for several years (San Francisco, Oakland, Long Beach, Miami Beach) before
becoming a team coach. She guided the Chicago Fyre to the 1983 WTT title before joining the League fulltime as Player Liaison in 1985. The transition from the courts to the office was a smooth one for Kloss. “I did it
gradually, going from being a player to coaching a WTT team then working to recruit players for the League
and eventually running the operation.” Kloss took over as the WTT Vice President in 1987 and eventually
succeeded Billie Jean King as WTT Executive Director in 1991. Kloss was named CEO/Commissioner in
February 2001.
Kloss oversees Mylan World TeamTennis and the nationwide grassroots Mylan WTT Rec League programs
from her New York City office. Kloss’ primary focus is on national sponsorships, strategic planning, media
partnerships and expansion of Mylan WTT.

rom the court sense of Leander Paes and creativity
of Martina Hingis to the synchronicity of the Bryan
Brothers, many of the best doubles players in the world
find a home in Mylan World TeamTennis.
Accounting for three of the five sets played, doubles is
anything but irrelevant in the Mylan WTT format. The
core of successful teams is often rooted in the quality of
its doubles players. Strategies play a significant role in
the outcome of a match. With the home team controlling
the set-by-set lineup, the importance of having
reliable doubles play becomes even greater.
Past players like Lisa Raymond and
Mark Knowles emerged as difference
makers on their teams, while
legends such as Martina Navratilova
and John McEnroe showcased the
craft that made them household names.
Frequently described as ‘specialists’, doubles
players aren’t as susceptible to pressure when playing
Mylan WTT, given that tournaments outside of the four
majors use no-ad scoring. So they are specialists on
their Mylan WTT teams in that they understand how to
play in an environment where every point matters and
every game counts.
Over the years, team lineups have made for some
interesting mixed doubles combinations and led to
successful pairings on the pro tour and at Grand Slam
events. Mylan WTT telecasts and live streams have
also featured more doubles coverage than probably any
other professional tennis event.
This year’s lineup features seven players who are or
have been ranked No. 1 in doubles (Bob Bryan, Mike
Bryan, Kveta Peschke, Liezel Huber, Martina Hingis,
Leander Paes and Venus Williams). Six players hold
a career Grand Slam in doubles or mixed doubles and
12 have at least one major doubles title to their name.
With 31 of the league’s 37 players owning at least
one Tour-level doubles trophy, the discipline is
sure to take center stage this summer.

owners and relocated to Austin, Texas,
and San Diego, respectively.
ESPN PARTNERS WITH
MYLAN WTT
More than 60 hours of Mylan
WTT programming will be
broadcast on ESPN channels
this July. Twenty matches
will be live streamed on ESPN
3, while the 2014 Mylan WTT
Finals will air live on ESPN 2
on Sunday, July 27. The ESPN
coverage is part of more than
200 hours of coverage on
national and regional television
networks, and online for the
2014 season.
BEST SPORTS TEAM EVER?
The 2011-2013 Washington Kastles
teams certainly have to be included in
any discussion of top sports teams. The
Kastles did not lose a match during the 2011
and 2012 seasons en route to the league
championship. The Texas Wild handed the
Kastles their first loss in three seasons on July 10, 2013, ending the Kastles winning
streak at 34 consecutive matches. Washington’s win streak is the longest in major pro
sports league history, surpassing the previous mark of 33 consecutive wins held by
the NBA’s 1971-72 Lakers. Washington didn’t slow down in 2013, winning their third
consecutive title and fourth overall. The Kastles will try to tie the league record of four
consecutive championships, set by Sacramento between 1997-2000.
GIVING BACK
Over the past decade, Mylan WTT has given
away more than 250,000 junior tennis racquets
through clinics, Mylan WTT matches, and other
youth activities. This summer in partnership
with the USTA, all Mylan WTT teams will
host PlayDays to provide free instruction to
thousands of youth.

ESPN – All Four Majors, All In One Place
Tennis has been part of ESPN since its first week on the air and provided many memorable moments,
but it has never been as important as today, with the US Open joining the lineup in 2009, giving ESPN
all four Grand Slam events, something no other U.S. network has ever done, let alone in one year. ESPN
has presented the Australian Open since 1984, the French Open since 2002 (plus 1986 – 1993), and
Wimbledon since 2003, with exclusivity for live television with all other rights extended added in a 12year agreement starting in 2012. Exclusivity for the US Open in an 11-year agreement begins in 2015. ESPN3 delivers an unmatched multi-screen presentation of the sport’s four majors, all ATP 1000 and 500
tournaments, WTA Premier Events and season-ending championships for both tours. ESPN debuted September 7, 1979, and the first tennis telecast was exactly one week later,
September 14, a Davis Cup tie, Argentina at U.S. from Memphis with Cliff Drysdale on the call and
John McEnroe playing.
ESPN3 is ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network, a destination that delivers thousands of exclusive
sports events annually. It is accessible online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the
WatchESPN app and streamed on televisions through ESPN on Xbox LIVE to Gold members, Apple
TV, Roku and Amazon Fire TV. The network is currently available to more than 92 million homes at no
additional cost to fans who receive their high-speed Internet connection or video subscription from
an affiliated service provider. The network is also available at no cost to approximately 21 million U.S.
college students and U.S.-based military personnel via computers, smartphones and tablets connected
to on-campus educational and on-base military broadband and Wi-Fi networks.

Tennis Channel (www.tennischannel.com) is the only 24-hour, television-based multimedia destination
dedicated to both the professional sport and tennis lifestyle. A hybrid of comprehensive sports, health,
fitness, pop culture, entertainment, lifestyle and travel programming, the network is home to every
aspect of the wide-ranging, worldwide tennis community. It also has the most concentrated singlesport coverage in television, with telecast rights to the US Open, Wimbledon, Roland Garros (French
Open), Australian Open, Emirates Airline US Open Series, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events, top-tier
WTA competitions, Davis Cup and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, and Hyundai Hopman Cup. Tennis Channel

Important Things To Know
Each year after Wimbledon, Mylan WTT takes center stage in professional tennis. Some of the world’s best
men and women team up to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles in an exciting and unique professional
team tennis competition. The players thrive on the match intensity, camaraderie of team play and the
hometown support from their fans. Here are key terms to know about the Mylan WTT experience.
THE TEAMS
Draft
Team rosters are determined through two drafts held prior to the season - the Mylan WTT Marquee
Draft in February and the Mylan WTT Roster Draft in March. The Marquee Draft includes some of
the biggest names in tennis who typically play a limited schedule. There are four or five rounds to
the Mylan WTT Roster Draft. Teams draft in reverse order of the previous year’s final team standings
(including playoffs), based on overall match won/loss record. Returning franchises have the right to
protect players from the previous year’s roster.
Franchises
Seven teams will compete for three weeks during the 2014 season. The franchises are divided into
two conferences:
Eastern Conference
Boston Lobsters • Philadelphia Freedoms • Washington Kastles
Western Conference
Austin Aces • San Diego Aviators • Springfield Lasers • Texas Wild
THE SCHEDULE
Regular season
Each of the teams will play 14 regular season matches - seven home, seven away. The teams
will compete in two conferences during the regular season, which begins on Sunday, July 6 and
concludes on Wednesday, July 23.
Post-season
The top two teams from both the Western and Eastern Conference advance to the 2014 Mylan WTT
Conference Championships which will be hosted on Thursday, July 24, by the top-seeded team in
each Conference. The 2014 Mylan WTT Finals will be contested Sunday, July 27, on the home court
of the Western Conference Champions.
ON THE COURT
Fan Experience
Fan participation is an important part of any of Mylan WTT match. Crowds are encouraged to be
vocal about great play (while still being respectful of all players) and are allowed to enter/exit the
stadium during play without having to wait for a changeover. Often between games, music is played
or a DJ fires up the crowd.
Match
A match is a contest between two Mylan WTT teams, consisting of five sets plus Overtime (if any)
and a Supertiebreaker (if necessary). The sets are men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s
doubles and mixed doubles.
Match Order
The home team coach determines the order of sets and turns in the lineup to the head umpire one
hour before match start time. Every match includes a halftime break – either after the second or
third set.

glossary
Officials
Seven roving linespersons and a head umpire comprise the officials at a Mylan WTT match. The
head umpire, who calls the match from an umpire’s box, is in charge. His/her decisions are final.
Substitution
A coach may substitute one player, per set, per gender at the conclusion of a point. If a player is
substituted, he/she may not return to the match during that set.
Team
Each team has a coach and four players; two men and two women (five or more players if there are
Marquee or Wild Card players on the team). Players are permitted to play in a maximum of three sets
per match.
Timeouts
As with other professional league team sports, Mylan WTT features the use of GEICO Timeouts
during match play. Each team will be allotted two timeouts per set with an additional timeout
being awarded to each team if a match goes into Overtime. GEICO Timeouts will be twenty (:20)
seconds in length and do not carry over between sets. Only the coach may call a timeout. Coaches
or players may enter the court area during these breaks in action.
SCORING
Keeping Score
• Scoring is no-ad (the first team to win four points wins the game). Game scoring is 1, 2, 3, game.
• All games, sets and Supertiebreakers are won by a margin of one point.
• Each game counts as one point in the team’s cumulative match score. • The receiver has the choice from which side he/she will receive serve should the game reach
three points each. In mixed doubles, the serve is always gender-to-gender at 3-3.
• Teams change sides after every four games. • Let serves are played. Overtime
In Mylan WTT matches - every point matters, every game counts. That is never more evident than
in Overtime. If the team ahead in the cumulative score wins the final game of the last set, then that
team is the winner. If, however, the trailing team wins the final set, the match is sent into Overtime
and continues until a) the leading team wins one game, or b) the trailing team ties the match score. If the score becomes tied, the match is decided by a Supertiebreaker.
Set
The first team to reach five games wins a set. If the set is tied at 4-4, a 9-point tiebreaker is played.
Supertiebreaker
If the match is tied at the conclusion of five sets OR if the trailing team ties the score in Overtime, a
13-point Supertiebreaker, involving the same fifth set, decides the outcome of the entire match. A
coin toss determines the choice of side, server and receiver. Players change sides after six points.
The first team to win seven points is awarded a single game and the match.
Tiebreaker
If a set reaches 4-4, a 9-point tiebreaker is played to decide the winner of the set. The first team to
reach five points wins the tiebreaker. Players change sides after four points. The tiebreaker counts
as one game and decides the outcome of the set.
