Exploring the Human Body... combines four favorite science series: Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science, The Magic School Bus, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Janice VanCleave’s into one easy-to-use science curriculum. Designed as a 10-week unit study, it’s a perfect fit for homeschooling families who follow the four-year science-history cycle as well as for anyone looking for a picture book + video + simple experiment approach to studying science during the early years. Along with comprehensive 3- and 5-day schedules, more than 20 unique draw-and-write prompts and experiment pages are included to enhance student learning. Unit cover and photo record pages are provided as well. Required Resources Besides having access to various Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science picture books, The Magic School Bus picture books and DVDs, and Bill Nye the Science Guy DVDs, you will need a copy of Janice VanCleave’s Play and Find Out About the Human Body: Easy Experiments for Young Children (0439210062). These titles may be obtained by visiting a local well-stocked library, or purchased new or used from any number of booksellers. PaperBack Swap at paperbackswap.com is another good option. Many The Magic School Bus videos are available in DVD format via Netflix. These titles are marked within this curriculum with a Netflix stamp. Numerous The Magic School Bus and Bill Nye the Science Guy episodes are available to view for free via YouTube at youtube.com as well. Open Library at openlibrary.org offers several Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science and a couple of The Magic School Bus titles in eBook format. These titles may be checked out for free for up to two weeks. However, Open Library has a very limited number of copies available per eBook, so please remember to digitally return copies as soon as possible after use. These books are marked within this curriculum with an Open Library stamp. Books available in audiobook format are marked within this curriculum with a Q stamp. © Blue House School - Exploring the Human Body with Four Favorite Science Series 3 How to Use & What to Do In order to provide the most comprehensive curriculum possible using the four favorite science series, nearly every known book and video episode from Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science, The Magic School Bus and Bill Nye the Science Guy that is pertinent to the study of the human body is included in some way. This includes several out-of-print, but still very good books. Open Library is particularly helpful in tracking down these titles. Exploring the Human Body... includes individual draw-and-write prompts specific to every included title of the Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science picture book series. A general draw-and-write prompt designed after the student reports illustrated in The Magic School Bus series is provided for those titles. Five different experiment pages of varying degrees of difficulty and design are included to summarize and report findings for Janice VanCleave’s experiments. Even with careful planning, it is unlikely that every single book and DVD listed within this curriculum will be available during the timeframe you need it. You may not wish to read every book, watch every video, complete every experiment or have your student fill in every draw-and-write prompt and experiment page either. That’s okay. Science at this age doesn’t need to be all-encompassing. However, to ensure your student gets a well-rounded education, at least one book, video and experiment per topic is recommended. At the very least, try to cover every major topic with a book or video and experiment in some way. Several books and videos cover similar topics, so choose whichever ones are readily available or appeal to you. Draw-and-write prompts and experiment pages are not necessary for every single book and experiment. Some experiments are really too simple to spend time analyzing on paper. Simply talk them through with your student. If your student isn’t writing long, cohesive sentences well yet or you are short on time, he or she may dictate to you what to write on the prompts. Encourage your student to speak in well-thought-out, complete sentences. Or, split the writing between the two of you. Even the newest writers can fill in a couple of short key words here and there as you scribe the rest. Due to the open-ended nature of the draw-and-write prompts, answers will vary greatly from student to student. Therefore, no answer key is provided for this curriculum. Just be sure your student is providing quality answers that are appropriate for his or her age and skill level. © Blue House School - Exploring the Human Body with Four Favorite Science Series 4 Some of the Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science books have been around for decades and come in various editions. Although any edition is acceptable and the text among them is often the same or very, very similar, illustrations sometimes are not. There may be a few cases where the draw-and-write prompts don’t match up exactly with the edition you’re using. For example, the older edition of A Drop of Blood by Paul Showers doesn’t feature an illustration of platelets, which the draw-and-write prompt uses. This doesn’t happen often, so you may choose to skip any such questions or use information found on the internet to fill in the blanks. No supply lists are included for Janice VanCleave’s experiments. Required supplies are basic and often found around the house. The supply lists provided within Play and Find Out About the Human Body... are well laid out and adequate, so there wasn’t a reason to duplicate the information. Just remember to read through the experiments a week or two ahead so you have time to round up anything you might not have on hand. Please note that some topics do not have accompanying experiments. For the sake of organization and good recordkeeping, keep a copy of this curriculum and all completed prompts and experiment pages in a dedicated life sciences binder. Use the included photo record page to add a little extra pizzazz by including snapshots of your student completing experiments along the way. © Blue House School - Exploring the Human Body with Four Favorite Science Series 5 Table of Contents Week Topic 1 Living Things, Growth, Life Cycles & Cells 2 The Brain, Reflexes & Sleep 3 The Five Senses & Sense of Touch 4 Sense of Smell, Taste, Sight & Hearing 5 The Respiratory System & How People Talk 6 The Digestive System & Nutrition 7 The Heart 8 Blood & the Circulatory System 9 Germs 10 The Skeletal System, the Muscular System, Teeth & Genetics 3- & 5-Day Schedules Draw-and-Write Prompts Experiment Pages Unit Cover Page Photo Record Page © Blue House School - Exploring the Human Body with Four Favorite Science Series 6 Human Body: 3-Day Schedule Week 3 - The Five Senses & Sense of Touch Day 1 • • • • Read My Five Senses.
