PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By Peter McDonnell
FEB 2011 President’s Message
I’m writing as yet another snow storm is adding to the already substantial snow
total of this winter. Since it appears that this is going to be a very snow filled
winter, I hope that everyone does their best to make sure all cars are removed from
their street (especially if you live on a snow emergency street) and that any fire
hydrants on your property are cleared after each storm. If the Town of North
Hempstead plows your street and you do not think they did a good job, you need to
call TOWN311 immediately to let them know. Please share your appreciation or
concern with us by emailing askcpca@verizon.net and I will let the town, village,
or county know how they are doing. This is important because only one person
had called the county after the December storm to let them know that the entire
westbound lane of Westbury Avenue west of Glen Cove Road still had not been
plowed by the second day after the storm had ended. Please do not suffer in
silence and share your concerns with either the government entity involved and/or
with the CPCA.
A recurring issue in our community is how best to support the local merchants who
are most supportive of our community. We in Carle Place have many choices on
where to spend our money for entertainment and household items. Do you think
twice before spending your money at a nationally run chain store versus a locally
owned store? What are we giving up by saving a few dollars by shopping at a big
box store that minimally supports our community versus spending a few more
dollars for an item at a local store that constantly supports our community
organizations? I have made a new year’s resolution to not shop at the big box
stores or chain
restaurants and to give all of my business to the locally owned
businesses that have shown an active commitment to our community. Please take
the time to note which businesses are supporting your child’s team or school event,
and the CPCA. We all have a choice of where we spend our money and where we
spend it does make a difference for our town. I am old enough to remember
shopping along Westbury Avenue as a child with my parents at the locally owned
hardware store, pharmacy, and card store among other
merchants. While those
days will never come totally back, the smaller businesses need our support.
Our January speaker from the Assessment Review Commission showed those in
attendance how easy it is to file an appeal without outside help. I have used a third
party firm in the past but will now be doing it on my own. Please visit their
website at www.nassaucountyny.gov/arc where you fill find the form to file as
well as recent comparable sales to see how your assessment compares.
Comparable sales are also available at www.mlsli.com and www.zillow.com. Any
questions can be directed to 571-3214, but the appeal must be filed with the
commission by March 1, 2011.
Our next meeting will be February 16th at 8PM. We try to have at least one
financially related topic each year (prior topics have been long term care insurance
and estate planning). This month’s speaker will talk about how annuities can be
used as part of your financial security.

Email Alerts
The CPCA is starting an email alert system for its members to keep them
better informed of events and meetings that will affect our membership. Since
our Frog Horn comes out only once a month, we feel this is the best way to keep
our membership up to date on any breaking news. If you would like to be
added to this list, please send your name, address, and email address to
cpcaupdates@verizon.net and you will be alerted to any news that has come to
our attention. If you would like to be added to this list, but are not currently a
member, all you have to do is join by sending $15 and your name and address
to CPCA, PO Box 131, Carle Place, NY, 11514.

By John T. Heslin
Senior member Hilda Gath was presented with a plaque
and flowers at our December Christmas/Holiday Party for
her untiring service to the Carle Place Seniors. Hilda and
her late husband, John, settled in Carle Place 55 years ago.
Their family grew with the addition of three daughters,
who all live in Albany. Hilda is the proud grandmother of
four. In addition to making many trips to Albany, Hilda
spends much of her time with the Rosary Society at Our
Lady of Hope, bowling with the American Legion’s
Auxiliary, knitting, cooking, and playing golf. In the
warmer weather, Hilda enjoys hosting tea parties in her
backyard. Hilda, we are proud to have you as a member of
our club.

BETTER SCHOOLS
BETTER COMMUNITIES By Bob Greco
As we enter the second half of the school year and as we cope
with cabin fever, I have recently read three books which
celebrate, whether intentionally or not, schools and community.
As mid-terms are over and any student or family may be
looking for reading material, I would recommend these books.
They left a significant impression on me, and a deeper
appreciation for the vital role that schools and communities
play in the development of the whole child, the meaningful
adult.
“Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith
Center Redmen,” by Joe Drape, reminds me of Carle Place.
Although it centers on a football team, the story and its
message are really about the value and moral worth of
small-town America. “Our Boys” takes place in Kansas and is
written by an author whose family moves to Smith Center,
Kansas from New York City. In the end they become
transformed and transfixed by that enriching experience. This
book is appropriate for any age level, child to senior citizen,
and has a self-affirming message to offer to all who appreciate
their schools and community in the life of children and adults
alike.

“Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to
Manhood,” by Jeffrey Marx, is a short book, just 174 pages, but
is deeper in intensity than the previous selection .
Its Pulitzer Prize-winning author has created a book that speaks
to the relationship of sons and fathers, and the development of
boys into responsible adulthood. Jim Tressel, head football
coach at Ohio State, says, “Season of Life should be required
reading for all of us blessed with the responsibility of coaching
young people. It has made a difference for our coaches and
players at Ohio State, and we will continue to suggest it as a
terrific resource for everyone in our football family.”
Finally, Pat Conroy’s book, “My Losing Season,” is the most
haunting and bittersweet. Conroy is famous for the novel “The
Great Santini.” This new book describes his life growing up
with the diabolical father who was at the center of the novel. In
that respect it can be disturbing to read for anyone who loves
kids. But the overriding impact of this memoir is of the power
of schools and community on the impressions of children. In
that respect it is profoundly provocative and evocative as well.
Pat Conroy was a marine brat who moved many times and was
devastated by his loss of both his school and sense of
community. It has value on many levels and for all ages but
would be best for upper elementary through upper senior
citizen. There are some bad words in the book, words that both
teenagers and marines are wont to utter. The bad words are not
necessary to enjoy the book or ponder its deeper meaning. Pat
Conroy says, “Goose bumps marched the length of my body and
the back of my neck tingled as I knew for the first time that
learning itself could carry the sting of divine inextinguishable
pleasure.” The meaning will be different for all its readers. For
me, all these books underscored the fundamental truth of this
column: Better schools build better communities. As renowned
anthropologist Dr. Jennifer James puts it, “The community you
live in isn’t an entity separate from your life. It’s the
representation of your life. You’re the individual unit, the
multiple of which is us.”

CPCA’s WINDOW PAINTING CONTEST
This year we had 41 children participate in the Civic Association's Window Painting Contest. The merchants'
windows were painted over Thanksgiving weekend and the judging took place on Monday 11/29. The
children all had fun painting and the weather cooperated. They all did a wonderful job! Our winners were
announced at the tree lighting on Sunday, December 5th.
Our winners from the 11th/12th graders were:
1st - Jessica Winter and Alica Curran - Gino's (side window)
2nd - Katie Senk, Todd Offerman and Brittany Bonasia - Gino's (front window - Westbury Ave)
3rd - Joanna Koronios, Brittney Hu, Kathleen Porillo - Cardinaldi's (Relay for Life window)
Our winners of the 7th-10th graders were:
1st - Emma Senk, Alyssa Acierno, Erin Brosnan - The Hollow Creamery
2nd - Christine Winter and Sabrina Feit - La Botega
3rd - Shelby Fuller, Maria Grima, Danielle Grieco - Carle Place Automotive
I would like to thank the Civic Association for sponsoring the window painting and I would also like to thank
Maureen Senk for helping me organize this year's contest. The judges also deserve a thank you. They took
time out of their day to judge each window. But of course, the biggest thank you is for our merchants who so
generously agreed to have their windows painted. This year our merchants consisted of:
Maple Pharmacy, Papa John's, Raceway Deli, Savoire Faire Salon, The Hollow Creamery, The Paw-furd Pet,
RC Shortstop Drive-In, Gino's Pizza, Cardinaldi's, La Botega, El Cutuqueno Restaurant, Carle Place Post
Office and Carle Place Automotive. Please stop in and tell them how much you appreciate them having their
window painted.

The McAngels Auxiliary
The McAngels Auxiliary
is hosting their 8th annual Sweetheart Dance on Friday March 18th to benefit the Ronald
McDonald House of Long Island. It is being held at The New Hyde Park Inn in New York and 400 guests are expected. The dance
is a great way to enjoy a night out and meet friends from the community while being charitable. Last year we raised over $70,000
for the organization. We’d like to thank those of you who have supported us throughout the years !
The McAngels are a group of women from Carle Place and East Williston who decided to become involved with the Ronald
McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is a "home away from home" providing comfort and shelter to
families experiencing the pain of having a sick child in an area hospital. Since our inception, we have raised over $400,000 for the
organization. The McAngels kids take part in many fundraising activities throughout the year as well. We are so proud of
accomplishing our mission to do something for some beautiful children and their families.
A huge part of the dance’s success depends on our raffles. Silent and Chinese auctions are held throughout the night. If you would
like to donate a raffle item, service, gift bag item, or monetary donation, please contact us (see below). We really appreciate the
generosity of the community! Donor names will be listed in a professionally printed journal. Journal ads are also available at
prices starting at $25.
Early bird tickets for the dance are $120 each. We encourage you to get a table of friends together, it is truly a great event! Ticket
price includes a full cocktail hour, sit down dinner, top shelf liquor, and dj entertainment.
The Ronald McDonald House is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. Any contribution you or your company makes may be tax
deductible. A receipt and certificate for any contribution will be provided.
We invite you to contact us for more information regarding the dance and or joining the McAngels. All are welcome!
Contact info: email us at mcangels2006@yahoo.com or call 369-9361 or visit our Facebook page
We will be happy to pick up a donation or donations may be mailed to The McAngels Auxiliary

father's cherry tree, but also admitted it. Now, Louie, do you
know why his father didn't punish him?

Because George still had the axe in his hand....

EYE OF THE HURRICANE
By Bob Greco
After shoveling every day and being trapped in our homes by
the mountains of snow we have received during this global
warming winter, we’ve all had a lot of time to think about life
while piling yet more snow atop the mounds of “Mount
Rushmore Avenue,” Mount Whitney Street, etc. Ever
wonder about those people who spend $2.00 apiece on those
little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backwards:
NAÏVE. If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't
people from Holland called Holes? If a pig loses its voice, is it
disgruntled? Why do croutons come in airtight packages?
Aren't they just stale bread anyway? If lawyers are disbarred
and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can
be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models
deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?
If Fed Ex and UPS merged, would they call it Fed UP? Do
Lipton Tea's employees take coffee breaks? If it's true that we
are here to help others, then what are the others here for? You
never really learn to swear until you learn to drive, in snow
particularly. Whatever happened to Preparations A through G?
At income tax time, notice how putting the words 'The' and
'IRS' together spells “THEIRS.” I know, too much time on my
hands.
February 3, 1959 was “the day the music died” with the untimely death of singers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the
Big Bopper. These three Rock singers died in an airplane crash
on February 3, 1959 at the height of their popularity.
Coincidentally, that same year John Lennon's group, The
Quarrymen, was playing a village festival one weekend, and
John met Paul McCartney, who impressed him with his
guitar-playing skills. George Harrison and Paul McCartney
took the same bus to school each day, and George, noticing one
day that Paul had a guitar, struck up a conversation with him,
and soon the two became friends. The resulting group then
went through several name changes - Johnny and The
Moondogs, The Silver Beetles, - and grew in popularity in the
local Liverpool area. When a German man came looking for
groups to sign up to play in Hamburg, Germany, The Beatles
were selected. Having no drummer at the time, they recruited
Pete Best and went to Hamburg. It was there that the Beatles
first met Ringo Starr, who was in Hamburg playing with Rory
and the Hurricanes…hmmmmmmm. With the advent of the
Beatles the age of Rock and Roll surely died. Perhaps the
plane crash in ’59 was a portent of things to come with the
“British invasion.”
Every generation has its music idols. Buddy Holly (“Peggy
Sue”), Richie Valens (“La Bamba”) and the Big Bopper
("Chantilly Lace"), whose real name was J.P. Richardson,
were among those at the top of the 1950's Rock and Roll
charts. Those of us who grew up in the fifties mourned the
premature deaths of these music icons. Memorials and
remembrances occurred for years. The members of my class
were seniors at Carle Place High School on Feb. 3, 1959 – “the
day the music died” -- and we had seen these three in person, as
well as other ‘50’s performers, at the Brooklyn Paramount. We
listened each night to DJ’s Alan Freed and Murray the
“K” (who visited CPHS) as they spun those 45’s. It was a
serious blow and many say it marked the end of the age of
innocence in America, but hey, that’s just me, remembering the
“golden age” of our youth, in the eye of the hurricane.
“There’s no place like home…”
There’s no place like Carle Place!
