The city drew criticism recently when Archer hired Basil Weatherly as museum curator without publicizing the opening. “We have a human resource department within the city,” Archer said, naming Marsha Sanders as the city’s human resource specialist. “She has been a great asset to the city since October of 2010.” Sanders, Archer said, “works actively in (the city’s) job posting and selection process” and “attends training regularly to stay up on all employment laws.” She will split her time between the human resource department and utility billing, Archer said. This year, a total of $53,000 was awarded to non-profit organizations throughout the community. “We’re really excited about this year,” Board President Mark Albert said. “We think that we can meet our goal this year just as we did last year. As I’ve said in the past, this is such a great organization because it touches almost every part of our community. We encourage all See Awards, p. 2A. Home, sweet home Homestead recognized as Centennial Farm Cheryl Overstreet Community Editor Family lore fills many family trees. Janice Burnett’s family lore is filled with an ocean passage and her grandfather’s friendship with an American legend. “My grandfather Fred LeBouc came across the ocean with a load of horses,” Burnett said. “He was 16 when he left Normandy, France, and Mark Twain was on the same ship.” Burnett said the family tale continued into North Dakota. “My grandfather didn’t speak English,” Burnett said. “He followed Mark Twain to the Dakotas and Twain taught him English.” Whether the tale is fact or fancy is unknown. Census records indicate that Fred LeBouc was born in 1866. He came to America in 1887 and became a citizen in 1891. LeBouc appeared in Washita Township of Custer County in 1900 where he married Martha Smart. Burnett said the family lore continued with her side of the family, too. “She is supposed to be Indian but I don’t know what tribe,” Burnett said. While Martha is recorded in the census records as white, her middle name is listed in online family trees as Mandana. What is known is that Martha Smart was born in August 1869 in Minnesota to parents from Illinois. Her ancestry is not listed on the records. “They met on the river north of Clinton,” Burnett said. “They married in 1900 and my father Paul was born the next year.” Burnett said the family came to their farm northeast of Elk City in 1912. Martha purchased 80 acres of farmland. “I believe their daughter Jessie was born on the farm but she may have been a baby when they came here,” Burnett added. Before too long, the LeBouc family bought 20 adjoining acres of land from Ed Mc- Comas’ grandfather, Burnett said. “That was on the next farm west,” she said. “Edwin and I laugh about it when I see him.” The LeBouc farm was famous in the area for growing sweet potatoes. A story in an early issue of “The Elk City Journal” claimed LeBouc raised 200 bushels of sweet potatoes per acre on his farm. The year the story was printed, he planted 30 acres of the delicacy. In 1930s dollars, that was quite a harvest. The family also had an orchard with plums, cherries, apples, peaches and apricots. They had a dozen Jersey cows and feed. Burnett said she was not sure of the variety of sweet potatoes he grew but they were different from others available in the stores. The story reports the farmer’s favorite variety was Nancy Hall but Porto Rico was gaining favor with customers at the time. He planted slips and sold the plants in Elk City, Sayre, Clinton, Texola, Sweetwater, the Texas oilfields and other places, according to the article. “I had some of the slips until a few years ago,” Burnett said. Fred LeBouc died in 1936. Burnett’s father, Paul, took over the farming operation and added some cattle, hogs and cotton to the crops on the farm. When Martha died in 1956, the property passed to Paul LeBouc, Burnett’s father. “Momma died in November 1964,” Burnett said. “Daddy farmed it until he died in December 1976.” The LeBouc farm passed to his only daughter. “We tore down the old house after he died,” she said. Burnett’s parents and grandparents rest at Port Cemetery near Sentinel. Early this year, Burnett’s daughter Paulett helped her complete and file the necessary forms for the Centennial Farm program. They received their recognition earlier this summer. “She lives in Oklahoma City Recently recognized as a Centennial Farm, the LeBouc – Burnett Farm is owned by Janice Burnett of Elk City. Wade, Publisher (1934-1972) Our View Archer hits the target Elizabeth Wade Perkinson There has been some debate recently regarding City Manager Anita Archer’s hiring of Basil Weatherly as our museum curator. Not many appear to have an issue with City Manager Archer’s choice of Weatherly, but rather her procedure in hiring and setting his salary. Let us examine these issues. Elk City officials and employees must at all times act within the Perkinson scope of the Charter and ordinances of the city of Elk City. Elk City Charter, Article VI, Section 19 reads that “The City Manager shall have the special powers and duties ... to appoint and remove, at pleasure, in accordance with policies and procedures approved by the commission, all officers and employees, except the Mayor, the Commissioners, the Treasurer and the City Attorney, as are now or may hereafter be created by the authority of this charter.” In plain English, this means City Manager Archer’s only two duties and requirements in hiring a museum curator were (1) to hire who she wanted (2) so long as it did not violate any policy or procedure set forth by the commission. As far as we are aware, no one has risen any particular policy or procedure that they feel Archer has violated. Elk City Charter, Article VI, Section 19 goes on to read: “He [the City Manager] shall determine, with the approval of the commission, the compensation for all officers whom he appoints.” This sentence has understandably caused some confusion. At first glance, one may think this means that Archer must have sought approval from the commission for setting the museum curator’s salary. But Oklahoma law distinguishes officers from employees. Different rules apply. In Oklahoma, officers are defined as: (1) the clerk, (2) the treasurer, or (3) anyone elected to office or appointed to office to fill a vacant seat of an unexpired term of an elected office (for example, if a commissioner resigns mid-term, their appointed replacement would still be an official). These rules were set in place to create a sort of checks and balances, like the president with Congress and the Supreme Court (theoretically, with all politics set aside of course). If a city manager hired a completely unqualified cousin to be the museum curator for $100,000 per year, an outraged commission could ultimately remove that city manager, thus safeguarding us from a tyrannical city manager. However, if a corrupt group of commissioners happened to get elected together, if they had the hiring and salary setting authority over city employees, and if they wanted to hire their completely unqualified cousin in a similar situation, the only retaliation would be to wait until the next election to vote them out, a situation which could cause an extended period of detriment to the city. We are by no means suggesting the city manager or commissioners are corrupt, but rather that often times seemingly inexplicable policies or procedures do in fact have a good reason behind them. It is important that we question the status quo, but also that we respect the procedures set in place. Let me repeat that. Do question anything that seems questionable, but follow the correct procedure to the best of your ability. If you don’t like the rules as they stand, that’s fine. There’s a rule to follow to change the rules too! In this situation, as confusion escalated in regard to the procedure City Manager Archer followed in hiring museum curator, Commissioner Bill Helton called a special meeting Wednesday night “to discuss and vote to approve a salary for the position of Museum Curator for the City of Elk City.” We not only think Commissioner Helton’s actions were permissible, but also were laudable. He thought there might be a problem, so he raised a yellow flag. We are fortunate to have not only Helton but a group of commissioners who have shown time and time again that they are willing to get their hands dirty to ensure our city government is running properly. That being said, after examining the Elk City Charter, we have seen that the setting of the salary of the museum curator, an employee, is the sole discretion of the city manager. Mayor Dan Gambill responded to the special meeting by immediately announcing that said salary was outside the scope of the commissioners and therefore could not be discussed, which was also not only permissible but laudable, again for a city official to stand up to opposition for what he believed to be the proper course of action. So, City Manager Anita Archer, Commissioner Bill Helton and Mayor Dan Gambill, all of whom could be taken to be in conflict, were in fact all acting in accordance with their duties and responsibilities under the Elk City Charter and were all looking out for the welfare of our community. Thank you Archer, Helton, Gambill and the rest of our officers and employees who have devoted their time and energy to making us truly the Best in the West. Elizabeth Wade Perkinson is publisher of The Elk City Daily News. Athletes worked hard This summer I had the pleasure of getting to know the seventh- and eighth-grade boys of Canute Junior High. I was able to take them to play basketball in several summer AAU basketball tournaments in Oklahoma and Kansas. When we started the summer, none of the kids had played on an AAU basketball team before, except for my son. They worked really hard during our practices and made a ton of improvements during Letter to the Editor the summer. In all we played in five tournaments getting second place in both the Elk City MAYB and Weatherford MAYB while getting third place in an Oklahoma City MAYB tournament. I am extremely proud of what these boys accomplished this summer. We took our small school boys team and competed against some very good select teams. I would appreciate it if you could let everyone know how hard they worked and what they accomplished. All of our Canute teams really did well this summer in softball, baseball and basketball, Canute is going to be very competitive in the years to come and look forward to watching these young men and women compete. It is truly an honor to work with kids that want to work hard and are always asking when they can get in the gym! I never had to force them to work hard! I am really proud of our kids and the progress that they have made in such a short time! Thank you for your support to all of the area schools, we really do appreciate it! Joe Savage A Romantic Soul Seldom Black or White Kevin Black Phone call to a grocery store: “Do you have Prince Albert in a can?” “Why, yes, we do.” “Well, let him out! He might suffocate!” Sometimes humor doesn’t carry over from one generation to the next. A case in point might be this old joke -- a play on words concerning Prince Albert pipe tobacco, sold in a red tin sized to fit in a shirt pocket. I’m not sure if it is even sold anymore; perhaps it’s gone like so many other familiar parts of the past. Audie Albert Gill was my grandfather, a man with black hair and dark eyes inherited from his Native American mother. His daily wear included a battered fedora and a faded work shirt, with his pipe and a can of Prince Albert in the pocket. He drove a team of mules in the lumber camps of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma, hard and dangerous work, in order to support my grandmother and their six children during the Great Depression. His temper was legendary in the family and his vocabulary was true-to-form for the mule driver that he was. I absolutely adored him, frequently begging to smoke his pipe, which he finally let me try. Once was quite enough. He was a doughboy, an infantryman during World War One -- the War to End All War, which of course it didn’t. He and my grandmother watched two sons go overseas to fight in the Philippines and Guam during World War Two. Audie Albert Gill and my grandmother, Beulah Mae, raised children that became members of the Greatest Generation. Through hardship and suffer- ing, in the few good times and the mostly hard times, they raised their children as best they could. My grandmother had her hands full with the kids, but her problems mostly concerned him. Granddaddy was quite the scamp, which in the interest of my family, I won’t elaborate upon. To me, Audie Albert Gill was the Unknown Soldier who quietly fought the daily battles of the Great Depression. He passed away in 1969, with my mother by his side. After that, my Grandmother often spoke of him with me. She recounted stories of the Depression, of his affection for his mules, the sound of his voice and laughter and of the love he had for his children. He had occasionally told her about being in the trenches of the Great War. He said he always closed his eyes a split second before he pulled the trigger because he didn’t want to see if he had just taken a life. One day while she was piecing a quilt, Grandmother described how he proposed to her. Black She was seventeen when the ex-soldier sat beside her, looked into her eyes and asked, “Beulah ..... Will you come cook for me?” She replied, “Only if we are married.” He was a romantic soul. My opinions are my own. Have a great day and better tomorrow. Kevin Black resides in Texola. U.S. Editorial Roundup The Advocate, Baton Rouge, La., on Putin earns Obama snub: When the leaders of the industrial nations meet next month in Russia, there will be formal large sessions and, in the unvarying tradition of diplomacy, many one-on-one meetings at which more real negotiating might be done. We’re glad that President Barack Obama erased one of those sessions from his calendar, that with the authoritarian president of Russia. “The immediate cause of the rupture is the Russian sheltering, against its treaty obligations, of U.S. fugitive Edward Snowden. However, there are many other good reasons for the United States to avoid entan- glement with the near-dictator Vladimir Putin. At that time the Lord’s name was not great among the “nations,” a word referring to the Gentiles, who were pagan and worshiped numerous gods. This prophecy depicts the time after Christ has risen from the dead and the Lord’s name had become indeed great among the nations through the spread of the Gospel. This prophecy foretold that from the rising to the setting of the sun incense and a “pure offering” would be made to the Lord’s name. (Most Catholics should be familiar with this verse since it is in the Eucharistic prayer - “From east to west a perfect offering is made.”) We know this verse is referring to the worship of God, which is the context within which sacrifices, or offerings, are made to God in Scripture. Secondly, the offering spoken of here is twofold - an offering of incense and a “pure” offering. What is this “pure offering” referring to? What is the only “pure” offering that has ever been made to God? It is the offering of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross at Calvary. In other words, this verse from Malachi tells us that from the rising of the sun to its setting (all day long) some sort of worship service will be taking place among the nations (the Gentiles) in which they offer incense and the only pure offering that has ever been made - Jesus Christ. What type of worship service do you know of that takes place in all the nations, all day long (every hour on the hour), where the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross is continually offered to God? It is, of course, the Mass. Malachi 1:11 is a prophecy that perfectly describes what is happening at the Mass. In the New Testament, Paul also very clearly describes the Mass as being a sacrifice when he links the “bread” and the “cup of blessing” to the sacrifices of Israel and to the practice of the Israelites eating the sacrifice that has been offered (1 Cor. 10:16-18). Paul tells us “whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord…For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1Cor.11:23-31). If the Eucharist were only a symbol why would Paul warn the Christians to examine themselves before receiving it? Again, these passages in Scripture describe the Mass where we participate in the body and blood of the sacrifice - Jesus Christ. The Old Testament predicted Christ would offer a true sacrifice to God using the elements of bread and wine. Melchizedek was a priest and offered sacrifice under the forms of bread and wine (Gen. 14:18). Psalm 110 predicted Christ would be a priest “after the order of Melchizedek,” that is, offering sacrifice under the forms of bread and wine. We must then look to the New Testament sacrifice distinct from that of Calvary, because the crucifixion was not of bread and wine. We find it in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. There, bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ, as promised by him (John 6:53-58) and as instituted at the Last Supper. It is important to understand that the Catholic Church teaches that the sacrifice of the cross was complete and perfect. The Mass is not a new sacrificing of Christ (he doesn’t suffer and die again Heb. 9:26), but a new offering of the same sacrifice. While what happened on Calvary happened once, its effects continue through the ages. Catholics are not merely symbolically commemorating Jesus in the Eucharist, but actually participating in his body and blood, as Paul tells us, “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” (1Cor10:16) “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”(Heb.13:8). What Jesus did in the past is present to God now, and God makes the sacrifice on Calvary present to us at Mass. “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1Cor.11:26). Jesus does not offer himself to God as a bloody, dying sacrifice in the Mass, but as we offer ourselves, a “living sacrifice” (Rom. 12:1). As this passage indicates, the offering of sacrifice does not require death or the shedding of blood. If it did, we could not offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God. Jesus, having shed his blood oncefor all on the cross, now offers himself to God in a continual, unbloody manner as a holy, living sacrifice on our behalf. The Didache (a Syrian liturgical manual written about A.D.70), reads, “On the Lord’s Day…gather together, break bread and offer the Eucharist, after confessing your transgressions so that your sacrifice may be pure. Let no one who has a quarrel with his neighbor join you until he is reconciled, lest our sacrifice be defiled. For this is that which was proclaimed by the Lord: ‘In every place and time let there be offered to me a clean sacrifice. For I am a great king,’ says the Lord ‘and my name is wonderful among the gentiles” It isn’t possible to get any closer to the New Testament times than this. These early Christians worshiping on the Lord’s Day recognized the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the Eucharist as a sacrifice. The night before Christ died at the Last Supper, He said: “This is my body. Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). Clearly, Christ was not talking about a one-time thing. From the very first century of Christianity and continuing for 2000 years now, worldwide, from the rising of the sun to its setting Malachi’s prophesy is being fulfilled: the only pure offering possible… the once for all perfect and complete sacrifice of Christ is made present in the Eucharist at every Catholic Mass. Impossible? Nothing is impossible for God. If you have been away from the Church…come home! Jesus is waiting to pour out His graces to you in the Eucharist! She's not the best, but I know I could do a lot worse. The most important thing is my children adore her and she is used to our routine. By and large, I'm happy to have her. However, I have two pet peeves I don't know how to address. Daisy is always late. Not by much, mind you -- but it is consistent. She's at least five minutes late every single day. Maybe it shouldn't bother me so much, but it does. I never dock her pay for tardiness, and I always pay her on time. To me, it's a reflection of how important she views her job. I feel it is disrespectful. The kicker is, Daisy is studying to be a nurse. I have told her unless she breaks this bad habit, she'll be fired from a future nursing job. The second thing is, on hot, humid days, Daisy has the worst body odor imaginable. When the weather is cool, she doesn't smell, but once sticky weather arrives, the wall of stench is enough to make my nose hairs curl. One day it made me physically ill and I had to excuse her for the day without explaining why. How should I address these problems? Or am I making too big a deal out of this? HAVING ISSUES IN VIRGINIA DEAR HAVING ISSUES: Daisy may not be the best employee, but a good employer makes clear what the ground rules are when someone is hired. Because you're a stickler for punctuality, remind Daisy about what her hours are and stress that you expect her to be on time or risk having her pay docked. (If she uses public transportation, there should be some flexibility, but because she's late every day she should be told she needs to leave home a few minutes earlier.) As to her personal hygiene issue, address it directly. Tell her you expect her to have showered, used deodorant and put on fresh clothes before coming to work -- especially in the summer. Helpful hint: When you hire someone, have a list of written rules prepared for the individual to read and sign so there will be no misunderstandings. Doing that is being an effective boss. DEAR ABBY: I am going to a concert by a popular band. My brother and my cousin always make fun of this band. People commenting online also post mean things about them. I know they have a right to their own opinions, but I don't get the same reactions when I talk about or listen to other popular music. Did people do this 10 or 20 years ago? Do they think it's cool to express hatred about mainstream musicians? Maybe the more popular something is, the more people there are having negative feelings toward it. FREE TO LISTEN AT 13 DEAR FREE TO LISTEN: There is always a degree of backlash against hugely popular entertainers because some people think it's more "cool" to be a fan of a new, upcoming band. Years ago, some people loved the Beatles and hated the Rolling Stones, and vice versa. The behavior you describe has been going on ever since the music business began. Yet the new version of “The Lady Vanishes” is not trying to remake the master’s 1938 version. Airing Sunday on PBS (check local listings), “The Lady Vanishes: Masterpiece Mystery!” hews closer to the novel than the film, but the basic story is the same. It’s a film shot rich with ambers and shadows, perfect for a mystery. The story unfolds in 1931 on a train traveling from the Balkans and revolves around an independent, wealthy young British woman, Iris (Tuppence Middleton, “Inspector Lewis”). “When you first meet her, she is not a particularly likable person,” Middleton says. “Taking this character, who was actually quite spoiled and privileged, and making her into this likable character” was her aim. It’s already been a rough day for Iris — and a somewhat confusing one for the audience. Iris bribes the ticket agent at the train depot into selling her a ticket, though she can’t secure a reserved seat. About to board, Iris loses consciousness, and precisely what happens then is where it becomes muddled for viewers. But stick with it; once she is on the train, the story picks up. As with any train, particularly when people are going to be aboard it for some time, they are aware of one another, which is an important plot point. “You are rather young to be traveling alone,” notes one biddy trying to get in her business. “Your family will be worried.” “I have none,” Iris retorts. “Aren’t I lucky?” Iris encounters nothing but unfriendly and, in some cases, downright hostile passengers. An older woman, Miss Froy (Selina Cadell, “Doc Martin”), takes Iris under her care, fussing about her, ordering tea and chattering. The woman never stops chattering. Soon, Miss Froy simply vanishes from the moving train. Many people definitely saw her, though they deny it. People have their own reasons for lying. Iris is made out to be mad or — as is more favored for 1931 — a hysterical young woman in need of supervision. Iris questions the passengers, trying to jog their memories about this most average-looking woman in the tweed suit. No luck. She grows increasingly agitated and eventually encounters a professor and his younger associate, Max (Tom Hughes), who is instantly smitten with her. “He has traveled the world a little bit,” Hughes says of his character. “She is like no other woman he has ever met. He has this ability to stand back and watch things, albeit with a youthful naivete. He has never met The Elk (is) City Daily News • Elk City, Oklahoma a girl with that much wealth — and that complicated and that ballsy.” Max wants to believe Iris, but all of the evidence indicates Iris is inventing Miss Froy. Iris is convinced Miss Froy met an evil end. People who she knows had seen them together refuse to acknowledge this truth. But why? Why would a pleasant middle-aged lady vanish, and why would everyone who had seen her deny it? A train is the perfect setting for such a mystery. “I think they are kind of their own environment,” Middleton says. “It is a bit as if you are on a holiday or if you are on a set. It is almost an alternate reality, and it feels like nothing else exists outside of that. You are traveling. The one constant is your surroundings and the people on the train.” “There is always danger, excitement and danger,” Middleton says. “Although if something bad happens, everything is more heightened in that sort of environment.” Iris is furious as she questions people who she knows saw Miss Froy, and person after person simply does not want to get involved for personal reasons. One man is having an affair and doesn’t want authorities questioning him. One woman is rushing home because her son has died. A doctor aboard the train wants to put Iris in a hospital, and though she refuses, he insists. He wants to sedate her, which she also refuses. Eventually, the doctor, who seems reasonable as Iris grows more agitated, manages to sneak in a sedative, using Max as an accomplice. “I was shocked when Max spiked the soup because he seemed like the old all-American hero,” Hughes says. “Everything about him is upfront and optimistic. Everyone has their weaknesses. The doctor is an evil soul. He had his hand on the shoulder, whispering in Max’s ear.” It would be too much of a spoiler to relay what happened to Miss Froy and why. It is, though, safe to say that this ending differs from the Hitchcock version. “The reason Hitchcock would have adapted the original story is it is classic,” Middleton says. “It is a bit of everything — action, thriller, a mystery to it. A bit of every genre to it.” “You can enjoy the costumes, and you can enjoy the ’30s setting, but ultimately it is about being young and slightly lost in the world and taking a risk and people taking advantage of that and trusting yourself when everyone else is questioning you — even yourself,” Hughes says. “It is a psychological thriller, far more than an edge-of-your seat thriller.” Page 1, Section C Back to school! Richard Moll and Mackenzie Rosman By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it Soon after the social-media phenomenon that was “Sharknado,” it’s doubtful there could be a better time for “Ghost Shark.” Syfy stays in the what-else-can-we-do-to-a-shark game with its latest original movie, debuting Thursday, Aug. 22. Indeed, the title creature is undead, having been killed by a fisherman ... and it returns to wreak vengeance, one of its targets being the father of a young woman played by “7th Heaven” alum Mackenzie Rosman. She tries to stop the terror before she becomes a victim herself, getting assistance from a lighthouse keeper portrayed by Richard Moll, famous as bailiff Bull on the sitcom “Night Court.” Though Rosman was unaware of the countless Tweets that “Sharknado” prompted when Syfy first ran it last month, Moll knew about it and realized what it might do for his own shark movie. “I choose to live without a television, so I miss all this great stuff,” he says. “I don’t want to amplify my couch-potato-ism more than is necessary, but that was such a hit, it’s evidently a big buildup for us. I think they may be sort of tying us in with that one.” And, frankly, how could “Ghost Shark” not be getting the “From the network that brought you ‘Sharknado’ ” treatment? The previous film even had scientists weighing in on the possibility of sharks being lifted from the ocean and dropped from the sky onto cities, with ABC’s Diane Sawyer and NBC’s Brian Williams among news anchors who talked about the “Sharknado” Tweet explosion on their broadcasts the next night. “It’s always very disconcerting when you get laughs from doing a drama,” Moll acknowledges of the camp factor “Ghost Shark” includes by definition, “but I tried to bring as much reality to it as I could. Then again, reality for me is what some people consider extremely over the top. This is an old guy who lost his wife to a shark, and I guess the only way to kill a ghost shark is to lure it into this watery cave and kill it there. He feels if he can manage that, he can get his wife back.” Relatively serious as that aspect may seem, Rosman admits she was drawn to “Ghost Shark“ because “it was just kind of goofy and silly and hammy, and I thought it would be kind of fun. I like to do a lot of different things, so it’s not that I specifically love this sort of stuff. I just like variety. “I spent close to a month in Louisiana making it,” notes Rosman. “I’d never spent that much time there before, and everybody I worked with was really cool. It was definitely a different experience, though. At one point, I was running through a swamp that was kneedeep at 3 in the morning. And there were snakes and alligators everywhere. You literally had to run right through it. But it was fun.” “Ghost Shark” is not the first movie to turn a shark’s vengeance on specific individuals. Consider the film Michael Caine was making in 1987 when he couldn’t get away to attend that year’s Oscars, where he ultimately won his first award for best supporting actor (for Woody Allen’s “Hannah and Her Sisters”): “Jaws the Revenge,” in which a great white had the relatives of police chief Brody — Roy Scheider’s character in the original “Jaws” — in its sights. As to whether his “Ghost Shark” character is meant to run parallel to Robert Shaw as Quint, the veteran shark hunter in “Jaws,” Moll maintains he “can’t even believe we’re in the same sentence, may he rest in peace. It’s kind of the same thing, except we’re not really on boats much in this. We’re more on dry land, walking the beach and entering the cave and that kind of thing, but it’s all fun. And I’d love to see a nice carryover from ‘Sharknado.’ ” Both Rosman and Moll hail from beloved and longrunning series, but Moll says that when he’s asked if he stays in touch with his “Night Court” comrades, “My answer to that has always been the wrong one, so my answer is, ‘I love show business. It’s the people in it I can’t stand.’ I’m not singling anyone out, but if I saw them coming, I’d probably cross to the other side of the street.” It would be hard for Rosman not to have a brighter outlook on the 11 seasons she spent as minister’s daughter Ruthie Camden on the family drama “7th Heaven,” and she does. “I’m always so surprised when people still say they love that show, and it seems like forever ago.” The series ended in 2007 — the same year Rosman graduated from high school — and she’s somewhat surprised to be recognized for it still. “I was in the grocery store the other day, waiting for the bathroom,” she recalls, “and someone said, ‘Hey!’ It’s so funny, being known for something in which I was quite a bit younger, but I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t done that show. “It really reinforces the thought of, ‘What if I had done one thing differently?’ Nothing in my life would be the same if I hadn’t gone with my friends to that audition while I was in kindergarten. It’s weird, the turns life takes.” Advertise here! 225-3000 Sunday, August 18, 2013 The Elk City Daily News • Elk City, Oklahoma Beckham County Fair September 7, 2013 Fine Arts Home Crafts 4-H & FFA Show Animals Photography Food Crafts Page 1 Page 2 The Elk City Daily News • Elk City, Oklahoma Meet the leaders Officers of the Beckham County Fair Association President: Steve Hogg Vice President: Keith Smith Secretary/Treasurer: Jared Brown Beckham County Fair Board Members District I: Tommy Calverley, Mike Reimer, Jarrod Brown District II: Dillon Parain Greg Mouse, Gary Thetford District III: Keith Smith, And Elizondo, Steve Hogg Sunday, August 18, 2013 Farm Credit Western Oklahoma The management of the Beckham County Free Fair is in the hands of the Beckham County Fair Board, which is composed of three persons elected from each of the three County Commissioner’s districts in the county.
