One such person is Simon Keswick, whose 50 years with the Group were recently recognized, in particular, the contribution he has made in terms of his ability to inspire others. In our feature on pages 14-19, we look at how the Group’s strong investment in people helps them to realize their potential through excellent career advancement opportunities and develops and nurtures the next generation of leaders. As we enter the Chinese New Year of the Snake, the Group is performing steadily. Although we continue to live in uncertain times, I am confident that with our market leading businesses with their strong balance sheets, we have an excellent base on which to build for the future, driven, as we have been for over 180 years, by the quality and character of our people. In 1982, at a critical point in Jardines’ history, Mr Keswick returned to Hong Kong from London and took over as ‘Taipan’. For the next six years, he steered the Group through one of its most difficult periods. Paying tribute to Simon Keswick at the dinner, current Group Managing Director Ben Keswick said that for over half a century, Mr Keswick had demonstrated an enduring commitment to the ‘Firm’. “His robust and determined approach to business has made a significant contribution to the Group’s development. He has created major businesses and steered Jardines successfully through some of its darkest days,” he said. “If anything though, it has been his charm and his ability to get the best out of people that will be seen as his greatest contribution. Those who worked closely with him over the years tell of how he was always supportive and gave them space to grow and develop.” To mark the occasion, Group Deputy Managing Director Adam Keswick presented Simon Keswick with a bowl engraved with the Chinese characters for ‘Jardines’. He also received a special commemorative edition of Thistle magazine highlighting his 50 years with the Group. In a separate event to mark the President’s visit, Sir Henry hosted a very successful dinner reception for the Indonesian delegation at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London, which was attended by some 50 guests. The event brings together Board members, country heads and chief executives of the Group’s main listed companies. The APRB programme consisted of a series of presentations focusing on Southeast Asia and mainland China. Guest speakers included former Prime Minister of Thailand, Abhisit Veijajiva, Professor Illian Mihov of INSEAD and Mike Henry, Chief Marketing Officer of BHP Billiton. Speaking at a cocktail reception for participants, government officials and local business partners, Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director Ben Keswick said that the Group had a long association with Thailand through its many flourishing business investments there. As well as Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, which Mr Keswick added, set the benchmark across the whole hospitality industry, other Group businesses operating in Thailand included Hongkong Land, Jardine Engineering Corporation, Jardine Schindler, Jardine Shipping, and Jardine Lloyd Thompson. In addition, Astra sourced over US$1 billion worth of components from Thailand each year for its automotive manufacturing plants, while Dairy Farm bought a significant amount of Thai foodstuffs to sell at its outlets across the region. Group Managing Director Meets Top Officials in Hanoi At the Centre 5 Lord Powell Visits Indonesia and Thailand As part of a recent visit to Vietnam, Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director Ben Keswick met with the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai and Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh in Hanoi. During their meeting, the macro-economic challenges currently facing Vietnam were discussed as well as a large project being pursued by Hongkong Land in the Central Business District of Ho Chi Minh City. The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed his support of Jardine Matheson’s long-term commitment to Vietnam. The Jardine Matheson Group’s Interim Management Statement for the period 1st July to 6th November 2012 reports that the Group has performed steadily with underlying earnings in line with last year. The results show a strong balance sheet with net debt little changed during the period. Jardine Pacific’s operations produced mixed performances and its results overall were slightly behind those for last year. Jardine Motors is seeing good levels of activity in Hong Kong, but its results have been materially affected by difficult trading conditions in Southern China. Jardine Lloyd Thompson achieved further organic growth supported by strong revenue generation in Latin America and Asia. Hongkong Land’s commercial properties saw generally positive rental reversions despite subdued markets, while the contribution from its residential developments is greater than had been anticipated at the start of the year. Dairy Farm’s businesses continued to perform well with improvements in both sales and earnings. Mandarin Oriental benefited from positive trading environments, although it is experiencing some reduction in levels of corporate business. Astra is achieving strong car sales in Indonesia, which has more than offset lower returns from a number of its other areas of activity. Thistle vol.1 2013 Group Performing Steadily Jardines and Hongkong Caterers Celebrate their 40-Year Partnership The Jardine Matheson Group and Hongkong Caterers celebrated the 40th year of their joint venture partnership with a gala dinner held at the City Hall Maxim’s Palace. Addressing guests, Jardine Matheson Group Chairman Sir Henry Keswick said that the partnership had started with the establishment of Maxim’s Caterers’ first fast food outlet in Central in 1972. It had since grown into Hong Kong’s premier restaurant group with a portfolio of over 700 outlets in a wide variety of popular formats, with sales that now exceed HK$10 billion (US$1.29 billion). “While Maxim’s has had 40 very successful years behind it, the best is yet to come,” predicted Sir Henry. “It has exciting new opportunities in China and in other new markets such as with Starbucks in Vietnam, which is due to open its first store in 2013. So I am confident that we shall see Maxim’s continue to grow and prosper.” During the event, two cheques of HK$1 million each were presented to MINDSET from Hongkong Caterers and Maxim’s, who have supported the charity since 2006 with their donations now totaling HK$8 million. Accepting the cheques, Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director and MINDSET Chairman Ben Keswick said that over the last ten years MINDSET had made excellent progress in raising the awareness and understanding of mental health issues in Hong Kong. “Generous contributions like these are of direct benefit for those in need and have, for example, paid for the development of MINDSET Place. I would like to say a big thank you to Maxim’s and Hong Kong Caterers for being great partners and for their great support of MINDSET,” said Mr Keswick. The US$100 million project is the most modern commercial office building in the Indonesian capital and offers 57,000 sq. m. of prime office space over 30 floors. Tenants include Permata Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Total Exploration & Production and Morgan Stanley. During the visit, Sir Henry met the staff of Jakarta Land, which is a 50% joint venture with Hongkong Land, toured the facilities and paid a visit to Permata Bank’s new head office. At the Centre 7 Jardine Matheson (China) – Supporting the Group on the Mainland JMC has had representative offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen for many years, but extended its reach into the Southwest with the opening of a new office in Chongqing in March 2012 to reflect the Group’s increasing investments in that region. “Our geographical spread now covers all the ‘hot points’ of Group business in China at present and the major activities of its business units,” said Adam Williams, who as Group Chief Representative oversees all JMC’s representative offices as well as being Chief Representative of the Beijing Office. JMC’s mission is to assist Group businesses in mainland China. Essentially this comprises an in-depth understanding of the political scene at Central and Provincial Government levels; a reading of the economic trends; keen knowledge of the way the systems and processes work; and the building of key relationships. JMC provides support for Group companies, organizes visits for senior Group management and conducts research to aid Group companies. JMC also provides regular briefings in Hong Kong on the current trends on the Mainland for management teams from across the Group. From Left: Liu Lu, Senior Adviser, Jardine Matheson (China) Beijing; Adam Keswick, Deputy Managing Director, Jardine Matheson Group; Helen Zhong, Chief Representative, JMC Chongqing; Jardine Matheson Group Chairman Sir Henry Keswick; Danny Cao, Business Development Executive, JMC Chongqing; and David Hsu, Chairman, and Adam Williams, Group Chief Representative, JMC. JMC’s comprehensive approach means that whenever a Group company requires assistance, the relevant JMC Representative Office can provide on the ground support and put them in touch with the right person in the right office. “That could be in Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, State Planning or in any other Secretariat or regulatory body,” said Mr Williams. “We build up relationships within the various institutions so that when a business unit needs a licence or has a problem, we can provide clear advice and direct them to the right contact who is in a position to help address the issue.” Such relationships are also most important when it comes to organizing meetings during the regular visits of senior management from the Group, including Group Chairman Sir Henry Keswick, Directors and JMC Chairman David Hsu. Sir Henry, for example, meets senior Government leaders and officials who often have extensive commitments. JMC is well placed to arrange these meetings, as well as deal with the bureaucracy along the way. “It can be an incredibly lengthy and complicated process, but over the last decade we have been incredibly fortunate in being able to make things happen. Our ability to get to know senior officials, and enable them to become acquainted with and understand the Jardine Matheson Group, is the art we have developed over the years,” said Mr Williams. In its support of Group businesses, JMC’s representative offices are strategically placed, with the new facility in Chongqing an obvious addition to the original four, which were opened in the 1980s. “Over the last decade, Hongkong Land has been investing in luxury developments in Chongqing and in Chengdu and as other Group companies have also moved into this region, we now have motor, retail, insurance and hotel interests, as well as our joint venture at the new airport in Kunming,” said David Hsu. “This made Chongqing a clear choice for a new representative office.” In spite of the economic slowdown, the outlook for business in mainland China remains good. “The Group always takes a long-term view and a downturn is a good time to invest,” said Mr Hsu. “As long as one is cautious there are many opportunities for Group businesses to pursue.” Thistle vol.1 2013 As the Jardine Matheson Group continues to grow its businesses in mainland China, its corporate presence there, Jardine Matheson (China) (JMC), has recently restructured and expanded its operations to enable it to better serve Group interests in priority regions. ENTERPRISE AT WORK ... Jardine Engineering Corporation Team members of JEC’s E&M Contracting Division. A customer-focused strategy underpinned by teamwork at all levels has been the driving factor in Jardine Engineering Corporation’s (JEC) successful growth of business at Hong Kong International Airport over the last decade. From a single baggage security system contract in 2001, JEC has built a relationship with the Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA) into an excellent ongoing partnership. Today this represents a significant business, making the AA one of JEC’s top customers. “JEC set a long-term goal of developing the relationship into a key account and sustainable major revenue stream based on our team’s unwavering focus on understanding the AA’s needs, and a dedication to exceeding expectations,” explained C K Tam, Operations Director, Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) Contracting. “We have worked consistently to become a trusted partner of the AA and as this trust has grown so has the portfolio of systems that we maintain.” This portfolio has included over 80% market share of the major upgrades of Hong Kong International Airport’s complicated and critical Baggage Handling System (BHS), which is at the core of the facility’s operations, as well as ongoing maintenance of specialized heavy machinery such as the aircraft loading bridge systems, for which JEC was awarded a four-year contract in 2012. It has also involved a unique operating environment that has often proven challenging and tested JEC’s technical expertise. “For example, the BHS alone is spread within a hall that is approximately four football fields in size split over two levels, consisting of over 10km of conveyor belts that interconnect with over 400 check-in counters with more than 40 X-ray screening machines, and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking systems,” said Mr Tam. Dealing with this level of complexity required JEC to assemble and co-ordinate teams of, at times, over 100 different types of specialist engineers, while fostering a strong spirit of teamwork and can-do attitude in order to deliver innovative solutions. These included the challenges of implementing new technologies without compromising reliability such as the introduction of the RFID tagging and vertical sorting units that save space and operate more efficiently. “Our partnership with the AA represents what JEC is good at: providing an effective and dedicated direct customer interface, the ability to juggle multiple projects, and satisfying demanding customers in challenging environments,” said Mr Tam. “These types of projects require more from the frontline teams but provide an excellent business model.” As the partnership continues to grow, the JEC team is in a strong position to develop the business further by using its understanding of the AA’s requirements to leverage and adapt the team’s expertise and consistently deliver results. “We have successfully created a financially strong and sustainable business in its own right that is based on a strong foundation of partnership and trust through performance,” added Mr Tam. “In turn, this has reinforced JEC’s position as a leading provider of complex E&M solutions in the most demanding critical facility environments.” Please address your comments or suggestions regarding Thistle to the Thistle Editor, c/0 Group Corporate Affairs, Jardine Matheson Limited, 48/F Jardine House, Central, Hong Kong gca@jardines.com Thistle is published by Jardine Matheson Limited on behalf of the Jardine Matheson Group. www.jardines.com
