Turtle Times - Turtle Bay Beach Club
Turtle Times
From the GM’s desk
Dear Friends,
Well it is really difficult to know where to start as I sit in the tranquil surrounds of
Turtle Bay where all is as usual apart from the lack of familiar faces around the hotel.
The decision by Thomsons to cancel their charter was obviously a blow to us as
many of both our regular and new guests used it as the most economical way of coming to stay with us. The resulting media outpouring has sadly further tarnished the
image of the Kenya coast and made the lives of all those who depend on the tourist
industry very tough indeed.
For those who can see past the bad press the other hurdle is insurance if you are flying into Mombasa. This has now been solved as AIG has agreed to offer inbound
tourists cover and the details of this are included in this newsletter. Malindi and Watamu are not included in the government travel advisory and there are several Tour
operators still sending guests to Watamu such as Somak, Tropical Sky, Hayes and
Jarvis and Cosmos. There are also options with ticketing companies such as
Trailfinders.
We just implore all our friends and supporters to see past the bad press and come
and join us for your holidays as usual as life continues as it always does in sleepy sun
soaked Watamu. There are some great deals being offered so don’t miss out.
We now have twitter and still post lots of photos on our Turtle Bay Beach Club original page, if you want to see how life goes on normally at the hotel just check on.
Hoping that this finds you all well and we hope to see you back here as soon as possible.
Kind regards from a warm and sunny Watamu,
Damian
Best Beach !
For the second year
running Watamu has
been voted as one of
the top 10 beaches in
the world by CNN. It
is not only the beach,
it is the National
Marine Park, coral
reef and sheltered
lagoons teeming with
exotic fish that
provide a wonderful
rich environment to
discover and explore!
There is a campaign called “Why I love Kenya” part of the Kenya
Tourism Federations efforts to promote the country
during these
days. It is primarily a social media campaign driven by you, the people
who love Kenya. Their facebook page is a good place to start and for
you to tell the world why you love this country so much. Lots of people
have
posted
their
favourite
images
and
talked
the
talk.
Come on join in !
They are back!!!

Rouhan's birthday
Hi Damian, Hope this mail finds you well. Wanted to say a big
thank you for making Rouhan’s birthday so special and going the
extra mile. He was so surprised. As soon as he got off the bus at
school he came and gave me a big hug and kiss. Something boys
don’t do in public :):) To mums at least...
Have a good day and God bless.
Regards,
Shynooze
Big Thank you to all Turtle

2013 a golden year
Rocket
Turtle Bay has ‘kissed goodbye’ to the headache of kitchen waste
management. Humidity in this region means that kitchen waste
quickly degenerates and attracts flies. The club therefore has
acquired the rocket composter which breaks down food-waste to
compost in a sealed unit. This machine has already been installed
and all the compost produced is used in gardening as well as given
to the local farmers. Recycling plastic bottles, glass bottles as well
as juice packs has helped the hotel to reduce its waste production
by 70%. Proper waste management as explained above will ensure
that the hotel limits its negative impact on the environment both
by avoiding vehicle emissions transporting the waste to the
dumpsite and also reducing the load on what is a poorly maintained council facility.
Last year is memorable to
Turtle Bay Beach Club as it
was awarded a Gold Standard
by Ecotourism Kenya effectively making Turtle Bay the
first Kenyan Hotel and only
the ninth tourism facility in
the country to attain such a
rating. It should also not go
unnoticed that the Hotel won
energy management award
by KAM, the Imvelo award in
the category of best social
engagement from South
Africa and achieved Gold
status in Travelife award
collections. All these awards
are a reflection of our good
environmental stewardship
and resource conservation.
The club has played a leading
role and still will remain
committed to environmental
protection.

Watamu Wild Weekend 19 + 20 July
A number of tourism businesses in Watamu took part in the Wild
Weekend to promote our village as a great tourist destination. It was
a huge success and Skydive Diani took the guests sky diving over Watamu and they will do it again.
