We are pleased to share the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s 2015-2016
Academic Calendar, which showcases forward movement toward our Cleveland
Plan goals and initiatives.
As we celebrate the gains we are starting to see, we continue to lay the foundation
necessary to sustain the groundbreaking changes we are making to place CMSD
among the top urban districts in the nation.

With a citywide commitment to reinventing public education, the historic Cleveland
Plan legislation continues to fuel our progress — progress we have worked to capture
in this annual publication.
Our reform strategies are fully under way, and I am more grateful than ever to the
people of Cleveland for making quality education a priority. Your support of Issue 107
and Issue 4 has made it possible for every child in Cleveland to have access to a quality
school choice.
Those increasing choices span the city, and our preschool, academic, athletic and
artistic opportunities continue to grow to meet the needs and interests of every child.
As we work to increase choices and raise student achievement, we also are exploring
ways to enhance our transportation and food services and improve safety and security
in every building. The results are prompting more families to explore, select, support
and return to Cleveland’s public schools.
As CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, I remain committed to
producing tangible, visible and measurable results that meet the goals we set together,
and I will continue to implement our Cleveland Plan strategies with the help of our
growing list of partners.

faith as we work together this year to produce skilled graduates who are fully prepared
for the colleges and 21st Century jobs that await them.

The clock is ticking to make good on the promises we
made to state legislators in Columbus who gave us six
years to launch and meet the goals of The Cleveland Plan.
The clock is ticking on the four-year investment Cleveland
voters made to implement The Cleveland Plan initiatives
to expand quality school choices and show progress in
raising student achievement.
The digital clock on the home page of the CMSD
website – ClevelandMetroSchools.org – serves as a visual
reminder every day of the opportunity we have and the
work we are doing to improve our schools and elevate
our schools and our progress Districtwide.
Last year, the public’s faith in CMSD’s improving public
school system was further evidenced with passage of
Issue 4, extending the community’s investment in quality
public schools in every neighborhood.
Thank you, Cleveland, for believing in CMSD and for
the support you continue to provide to ensure the best
education possible for every child in Cleveland. Together,
we are making the Cleveland Metropolitan School District
a model urban school district for the nation.

SCHOOL
CMSD launched a communitywide school
attendance campaign this year – complete with yard signs,
billboards and messages delivered by celebrities – all aimed
at raising school attendance.
Staff and parents are uniting in a common message this year
for students: “Get to school. Every day counts!” Working
together, we must help students understand the direct impact
that student absences have on lower test scores and higher
dropout rates.
Teachers cannot educate children who regularly fail to show up
for school, and CMSD is relying on families to do their part to
repeat that message every day of the school year when students
use any reason to miss school:
“Get to school. Every day counts!”
A child’s failure simply because he or she is missing essential
learning at school will—in the long run—present greater
challenges for that child throughout his or her life.
Each day a child misses class or a school day adds
to his risk of failure. Every absence threatens to limit a child’s
options for college or careers and increases the likelihood
he or she will fail.

keep students focused
on learning
A significant factor affecting student
success is the assurance that the
environment in every CMSD
school is safe and orderly. The close
relationship between our school
safety officers and the students they
serve is attributed to the continued
decline of serious safety incidents the
past eight years. Security guards in
every building and a complete police
force that includes mobile patrols
in each neighborhood provide a
visual reminder every day of our
commitment to keeping students
safe and secure at school.

preschool across the city
The preschool years are the most
critical years in a child’s brain
formation, and the skills students
learn prior to entering kindergarten
are vital for their success in school
and in life. CMSD partners with
PRE4CLE, a network dedicated to
providing high-quality preschool
to as many children as possible.
Together, we are committed to
raising the quality of preschool
instruction citywide and removing
barriers like transportation. Until now,
those barriers have prevented many
families from enrolling their
children in a quality preschool
program and giving them
the best possible start
for their futures.

CMSD is top choice for foreign,
native-born ‘Newcomers’ to Cleveland
In partnership with Global Cleveland, CMSD continues
to attract newcomers—both foreign and native-born—
to enroll in our Thomas Jefferson International
Newcomers Academy.
Students with little or no grasp of English benefit from a full
range of language and other supports designed to help
students and families find their way in a new country or culture
and help them adjust to school and life while maintaining their
own cultural identity.
The school serves kindergarten through 12th-grade students
who are from more than 20 countries and Puerto Rico and
speak 13 different languages.
Once largely Hispanic, the International Newcomers Academy
now serves students from countries like Nepal, Burma, Congo,
Sudan, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan, providing bilingual and
cultural translation services, after-school tutoring and conflict
mediation with a goal to mainstream them into the full
CMSD school experience when they are ready.
CMSD works with a variety of community partners,
including Catholic Charities and the Refugee
Services Collaborative of Greater Cleveland to ensure
Cleveland’s ‘Newcomers’ have the supports they need
to succeed in school and in life.

Committee ensures a
student voice in urban
school reforms
CMSD is committed to giving
students a say in their education,
particularly in the changes and
improvements that can ensure the
best possible learning environments
at their schools. Nowhere is that
more evident than in the work of
CEO Eric Gordon’s Student Advisory
Committee, a diverse group of
up to 16 teenagers from each of
the District’s 30 high schools that
meets four times a year to provide
feedback on their schools’ wants,
needs and challenges. Throughout
the year, individual delegations to the
Advisory Committee work with
school principals to ensure that
students’ voices are heard
and are included in
decision-making that affects
their school experience.

Cleveland’s schools are working hard to
get parents involved in their children’s
education, and some impressive
numbers show the efforts are paying
off. A focus on engaging families and
caregivers more directly in their child’s
school experience has led to a record
high in family connections at CMSD.
Eighty percent of parents and
caregivers had face-to-face contact
with their children’s teachers last school
year at conferences and other
engagement activities. CMSD worked
with parents and teachers to make
conferences more convenient,
extending hours into the evening
and supplying the parents and
caregivers with their students’
academic data to enable
us to work together to ensure
every child’s success.

CMSD builds on gains already seen
in closing the achievement gap
CMSD’s forward movement under The Cleveland Plan has
been evident in many ways, including improvement on
15 state achievement indicators on the most recent report
card and signs we are closing the achievement gap in every
student subgroup.
The state’s measure of Cleveland’s success in closing the gap in
reading, math and graduation rates regardless of race, gender or
income increased by 20.1% on the 2013-14 state report card.
The most significant indicator of our forward movement is the
continued progress we are seeing in our graduation rates – up
another 5 percentage points last year and up a total of 12.1
points since passage of The Cleveland Plan.
CMSD is committed to building on the growth we have already
seen in every student subgroup:
• Asian-Americans, up 5%;
• African-Americans, up 10%;
• Students with Disabilities and Limited
English Proficiency students, up 12%;
• White students, up 14%;
• Hispanic students, up 18%;
• Multi-racial students, up 22%.
Our current graduation rate is a District record high.
Under The Cleveland Plan, CMSD is better positioned
than ever to build on and sustain progress in closing the
achievement gap.

CMSD Parent University College Bus Tours
In Partnership With College Now of Greater Cleveland
See the future now... explore the college experience with your scholar.
Parent University College Bus Tours are an opportunity for families to experience
college with their scholars. This opportunity allows families to make college or postsecondary education a reality. During the visits, families will meet with admission
representatives, take a walking tour of the campus and speak with current students.
Family Connection keeps
you connected through Naviance
CMSD high schools use web-based software known as Family Connection/Naviance to help you and your child
navigate high school courses, colleges and career plans. School counselors, principals and staff will provide you
with up-to-date information specific to your child’s high school.
Family Connection allows you and your child to get involved in the planning and advising process, research college
and career options and prepare for the future.
These trips allow families an opportunity to understand their role in their scholar’s
post-secondary education, FASFA, college admission and supports available to help
them succeed and graduate.
Family Connection also enables us to share information with you about
upcoming meetings and events, local scholarship opportunities
and other resources for college and career information.
Parent attendance is required for scholar participation. (CMSD parents and scholars,
grades 8-12 only). Tours are scheduled in the fall and spring. 216.838.3223
At the beginning of the school year, we will provide detailed
information on how to log in and use Family Connection
to keep you and your family connected to CMSD.
School Parent Organization

The School Parent Organization (SPO) is recognized as the official parent group of
the District. The primary role for parents and guardians in each SPO is to support
the academic achievement of all students within that particular school. The SPO
encourages and supports parent involvement in a variety of ways, including basic
parenting skills, volunteering, leadership, helping students learn at home, schoolparent communications and collaborating with the community.
A parent or custodial caregiver is a member of his or her respective school’s SPO by
virtue of having a student in that school. SPO officers are required to be parents or
legal guardians of students. There are no fees or dues to be an active member.
Call your local school office to participate in a parent organization and support
your children. For more information, call the Office of Family and Community
Engagement at 216.838.FACE (3223).

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District offers free language assistance for Limited English Proficiency (LEP)
parents with respect to school programs and activities. A parent does not have to be of limited English
proficiency in speaking, reading, writing and comprehending English in order to be considered LEP; it is only
necessary that a parent be limited in one area to be eligible to
receive language assistance. CMSD will accept a

learning so that all students are academically and socially equipped to succeed. The
conditions for learning include a safe, well-managed, respectful and supportive
learning environment and opportunities for social and emotional learning, a process
whereby children and adults acquire knowledge, skills and dispositions related to five
core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship
building and responsible decision making.

What happens when
a student misses school?
Missing school has a significant negative impact on a student’s academic
achievement. Presently, as much as half of the student body misses 10 or more
days of school each year.
Join us in our call to all students to ... GET TO SCHOOL this year.
Data shows that missing 10 or more days of school will:
• reduce reading scores by 12 percent.
• reduce math scores by 15 percent.
• reduce a student’s chances of remaining on track to graduation by 34 percent.
Did you know?
• As early as kindergarten, excessive absence can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Early absences lead to difficulties and poor attendance in later years.
– One in 10 kindergarten and first-grade students nationally is chronically absent,
missing a month of school.
– Absentee rates among preschoolers are even higher.
• By sixth grade, absenteeism is one of the signs that a student may drop out of
high school.
• By ninth grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates
than eighth-grade test scores.
• Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with
schoolwork, dealing with a bully or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
• Students should miss no more than nine days of school each year to stay engaged,
be successful and stay on track to graduation.
• Missing 10 percent – about 18 days – of school will make it harder for a student to
learn to read.
– One study found that only 17 percent of students who were chronically absent
in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade,
compared with 64 percent of those with good attendance.
• Absences can affect an entire classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning
to help some children catch up.
• Students can begin to reverse their academic difficulties if they improve
their attendance.
• Good attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from
college and keep a job.
