As my two years as Board Chair for the YMCA of Northwest Florida come to an end,
I can hardly believe everything that’s happened since my term began. It’s been
somewhat of a roller coaster ride, but I have to smile as I recall a colleague
assuring me that we all would have a great opportunity to develop some new skills
during my tenure. In retrospect, I would say that has definitely been the case.
At this time last year, we had just accepted a $5 million unrestricted gift from Quint
and Rishy Studer. In February, we also accepted their gift of approximately 1 acre
of land at the southwest corner of Intendencia and Tarragona Streets. These two
very generous gifts have laid the foundation for our new downtown Y, a vibrant,
modern facility that will serve our community for years to come.

Over the past year, we have focused on the many efforts required to bring that new
facility to life – planning, storytelling, fundraising, negotiating, capacity building and
designing. It’s been an exercise in patience, collaboration and flexibility – all
qualities that I know will serve us well as we move forward. I’ve also discovered just
how many people have been touched by the Y in their lives and how many more
have joined our cause to strengthen the community.
Amid all the activity related to our new Y, we also have continued to meet current
needs with expanded programs and services. Membership and program participation
have grown, especially among young adults, seniors and families needing child care.
We gave away $273,188 in direct Y Assistance, $60,000 more than last year –
ensuring that everyone has a chance to be part of the Y. Our child care programs at
both the Northeast and Pullum Branches now serve children with disabilities in a
proactive, high quality way through our work with the National Inclusion Project.
The list continues with expanded day camp service to the Miracle Camp location in
Beulah; management of the City of Pensacola pools for the summer season; 15 new
Banner Donors joining our Annual Campaign; and celebration of our 20th
anniversary of the Corporate Cup Games.

Just reading that list of accomplishments is a little overwhelming, and yet humbling
at the same time. We have become stronger together, and we have a long list of
board, donors, volunteers, staff, members and friends to thank for continued
support.
I know I have definitely been challenged in my role as Board Chair, and even
though this roller coaster has been fast and has taken us into new territory, I’m
grateful I was here for every minute of the ride. I hope you’ll stay with us in the
coming year. You won’t want to miss any of the excitement that still lies ahead.

issues were creating
emotional challenges for
the middle schooler, who
had become withdrawn
and depressed. Enter
Fallon and the Y Glee
Club—the perfect
opportunity for this
artistic young lady who
loves music and singing. Danea’s mom was
thrilled for her to have the opportunity.
“Fallon and the Y Kids Glee Club have given
Danea a sense of purpose,” says Debbie
Marshall. “Participating in Glee has
contributed to my daughter’s new self
confidence and new outlook on life.” Danea
says she hopes the experience in Glee Club
will propel her closer to her goal of a career
as a recording artist.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Nearly 50% of youth in our after-school programs
received Y Assistance so they could spend their
weekday afternoons in a safe, enriching environment.
Our summer day camps operated at capacity,
reaching 471 kids who kept their bodies and
minds active over the summer.
Through partnership with the National Inclusion Project and
Autism Pensacola, we welcomed children with disabilities into
child care and camp at Northeast and Pullum.
More than 1,300 children participated in swim lessons, where
they learned lifelong skills and reduced the likelihood of
drowning in a community surrounded by water.
Every child in the Pullum Branch VPK program tested above
the state readiness average for children entering
kindergarten.
More than 1,800 children learned teamwork and good sportsmanship while staying physically active in youth sports programs.

Glee gives me a chance to be fun
and show my creativity.”
We reached 4,235 children through before- and
after-school programs, summer camp, sports
and aquatics— programs that also build selfconfidence and instill values.

Ian Turoff,

Will, may
have
different
fitness
goals
when they
enter the
Pullum Y
weight
room, but they have learned that working
together can build more than just physical
strength in their family. Ian trains for
triathlons and martial arts; Riley is a
volunteer soccer coach with aspirations
toward extreme fitness; Will plays travel
baseball and has his sights set on the
Navarre High School baseball team. All three
inspire each other and their fellow members
in their family workouts. For this family,
physical fitness and togetherness now go
hand in hand.

environment where we don’t ever have to worry about safety.”
HEALTHY LIVING
More than 8,000 members enjoyed the
opportunity to stay healthy and strong while
building friendship and community.
We gave away $94,684 in Y Assistance in
membership—serving 533 people—as part
of our commitment that every body should
have the opportunity to be part of the Y.
About 20% of our members are age 60 or older.
For many, the Y is a chance to stay physically
active and socially connected through our
Senior Program.
Members challenged themselves and encouraged each other
through our Body Challenge, Running and Walking Clubs,
group fitness classes and small group training.
We hosted 32 teams from local companies in
our 20th Annual Corporate Cup Games and
reached 1,000 participants, volunteers and
friends through this workplace wellness event.

witches, princesses
and cowboys
descend on the
Crowne Plaza
Pensacola Grand
Hotel for the Y’s
annual Halloween
event for special
needs kids. Dozens
of businesses, clubs
and volunteer
groups unite to
provide a safe and
unique trick or
treating experience to more than 300 kids
from throughout the community. Volunteers
like Jennifer Day Metzgar dress up, organize
their group’s participation and hand out treats
for what they describe as an overwhelmingly
emotional and fun day that they simply
wouldn’t want to miss.

healthy kids and so glad that
these parents have somewhere
for their kids to come and
trick-or-treat safely.”
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
We welcomed 300 special needs kids to
Halloween at the Y, where they enjoyed a safe
and unique trick-or-treating experience.
More than 635 donors pledged more than
$181,000 to our Annual Campaign—led by
100 Banner Donors who gave $1,000 or
more to support the Y’s mission outreach.
As part of our commitment to personal dignity
and respect, we offered 2,926 free showers to
homeless and transient individuals.
We opened our doors to anyone who needed a place to meet
and connect—churches, Bible study groups, Scout groups,
schools and other nonprofits.
We provided a way for our members and friends
to give back, as 421 people gave volunteer time
valued at nearly $124,000 to our organization.
We could not achieve our mission without the committed support of our
donors, whose gifts make our work possible. We are especially honored to
recognize members of our Banner Circle whose gifts of $1,000 or more to
our Annual Campaign make a vital difference in the lives of those we serve.

calendar year 2013, our local community impact including Y
