I am very pleased to welcome you on the hospitable Voronezh land! It is for the fourth time that the annual International Platonov Festival has given us a unique opportunity to become a part of the grand celebration that Art is. Not only has the festival become a major cultural project of our region, but it has also been deemed a remarkable event in the life of Russia at large. Over 70 thousand spectators have visited the festival venues since 2011. This creative showcase is gaining still greater popularity, fostering goodwill and setting new trends. This year, the number of participant-countries has amounted to 18. It is well worth mentioning that for many musicians, directors and actors taking part in Platonov festival has become a tradition – they look forward to coming to Voronezh again, which indicates a high level of the arts forum organization as well as an invariably warm reception the artists are given here. Platonov Festival is meant to highlight the numerous facets of modern art, strengthen the interregional and international cultural bonds, provide new impetus for the development of culture, and, of course, bring joy and pleasure to a great many art lovers. The mission of the festival is particularly relevant today, in the Year of Culture announced in Russia. Our prominent countryman – the writer Andrey Platonov, the festival is named after, – said in his philosophical novel «Chevengur», «Only words can turn a fleeting sensation into a thought, which is why a thinking person talks». I hope that the performances, concerts, exhibitions and other events of the festival program will turn into a fruitful discussion between the Artist and the Spectator followed by deep thought on both parts. Platonov Festival is a unique, special phenomenon of modern Russian culture, a hymn of praise to the blessed, fertile Voronezh land, known for time-honored traditions and rich in talents. This year, Platonov Arts Festival program is remarkably great and diverse: «World Music» has been added to the musical part and «Street Theatres» has made the theatre program complete. Thousands of Voronezh citizens will discover the magnificent samples of the multifaceted world culture, see the works of traditional, classical, contemporary and avant-garde art and meet with creators and performers. As a spectator, I am full of impressions of the previous festivals: the dazzling, dynamic and extraordinary program emphasized with spiritual and creative unison of all the participants and guests can’t but immerse one in the atmosphere of art, and makes the international cultural forum extremely popular. As a fan of Voronezh, I am pleased to realize that the leading artists of our city demonstrate their skills on a par with world-famous masters, arousing genuine interest and highly emotional response among even the most sophisticated audience. As a Mayor of the city, I am really proud that today’s potential of the Black Soil Region's capital enables us to receive the world stars and stage rare performances, please a great many guests with the comfort and originality of the city, whose modern achievements are in perfect harmony with its centuries-old history. This year Voronezh celebrates a remarkable event – Andrey Platonov’s 115th birth anniversary. But for this person, Russian culture would be incomplete. So the warm and eventful days of the festival should be particularly memorable, bright and creative. Three continents – Asia, Africa and Europe – will be presented in our forum. All in all, about 300 actors, musicians, artists and literary figures from 18 countries will take part in the festival. We hope all the participants and guests have the most cordial welcome in Voronezh and cherish the sweetest memories of our hospitable city. We aspire to broaden our public’s view of the world and its cultural diversity, involve as many people – first of all youth – as possible in the festival and, as a result, in cultural life. We would like music, literature, theatre, visual arts to become an integral part of people’s life. Mayor of Voronezh City District Alexander Gusev Director – Art director of the Platonov Arts Festival Mikhail Bychkov platonov The author of two novels («Chevengur», «Happy Moscow»), nine novellas (among which are such masterpieces as «The Innermost Man», «The Foundation Pit» and, «Soul»), satirical short stories («Doubting Makar»), astonishing love stories («Fro», «The River Potudan») and short stories about children («The Cow», «A July Storm»), stories of great spiritual depth about the Second World War prose, introducing spiritual images («Inspired People», «There Is No Death!», «The Claim of the Dead»); a playwright among whose plays are both the lyrical comedy «The Hurdy-Gurdy» and the tragedy «14 Little Red Huts», an extraordinary screenwriter, a literary critic who wrote a paradoxical history of Russian and European literature (the book of articles «Reader’s Reflections»)… These are just the peaks of Andrey Platonov’s creative work. They represent the powerful and free artistic gift, which could not be stopped by censorship, decade-long bans, life and fate themselves of, probably, the most unliterary writer of ХХ century, who said more than once that «the work ends not in literature, but in life». This too is Andrey Platonov. His legacy to the culture of our ХХI century culture includes weighty volumes of prose, drama, journalism, literary criticism, notes and letters. Platonov’s amazing world is reflected in music, visual arts, films and theatre. Platonov’s readers and fans live not only in Russia but all over the world. This grand picture of Platonov’s «return» is epitomized in the program of Platonov Arts Festival, which is held in Voronezh, Platonov’s hometown. Natalia Kornienko exhibitions I worship life of every kind! Paintings and graphics of Alexander Deineka from collections of The State Tretyakov Gallery and The Kursk Deineka Picture Gallery June 5 – July 13 Opening – June 5, 4 p.m. Voronezh regional art museum named after I.N. Kramskoy Alexander Deineka and Andrey Platonov were contemporaries. This year marks the 115th anniversary of both the great artist (born 20 May 1899) and the great writer (born 1 September 1899). Their creative biographies proceeded in parallel and cross for the first time at the festival. Deineka is one of the most outstanding figures in the history of Russian art of ХХ century. He is commonly considered a master of socialist realism. However, it was the years of academic studies at the printmaking department of Moscow’s VKhUTEMAS (Higher Art and Technical Studios, where representatives of the Russian avant-garde taught), that had an ever-lasting impact on the artist’s work. Alexander Deineka is a phenomenon beyond the confines of one country: in Soviet times his works were repeatedly displayed at the Venice Biennial. In 2010 Deineka’s major personal exhibition was held in Tretyakov gallery, followed by one in the Exhibitions Palace in Rome (Italy) in 2011. Platonov festival hosts yet another big display of Deineka’s 34 works thus marking the artist’s 115th anniversary. Alexander Deineka proved an ideal link between the art of the previous centuries and that of the future <…> This bizarre tandem of broken space and massive hovering figures – the heavy and the light – simply mesmerizes. State Tratyakov’s gallery press-office The State Tretyakov Gallery is one of the biggest and oldest art museums in Russia founded in 1856 by a merchant P. M. Tretyakov. The gallery’s collection comprises over 170 thousand works of art featuring Russian painting, graphics, sculpture and applied arts, spanning centuries: from XI to early XXI. The Kursk Deineka Picture Gallery was founded in 1935. The gallery numbers about 10 thousand exhibits, many of which belong to Alexander Deineka and other artists whose life, in some way or other, is connected with Kursk. Авангард Freedom – the reason for the world Russian avant-garde from Krasnodar, Penza, Samara, Saratov and Yaroslavl museums June 6 – August 3 Opening – June 6, 4 p.m. Voronezh regional art museum named after I.N. Kramskoy Russian avant-garde is a complex and heterogeneous trend in art, developing in Russia from 1910 to 1932. It turned out to be more massive, profound and radical than in the West, which can be accounted for by our country’s history. For years, Soviet leaders disapproved of avant-garde art, so most of the exhibits have never been displayed – stored by foundations scattered all over the country. Platonov festival brings together the masterpieces of Krasnodar art museum named after F. A. Kovalenko, Penza art gallery named after K. A. Savitsky, Samara art museum, Saratov state art museum named after A.N. Radishchev and Yaroslavl art museum. The collection of the works will give a vivid picture of what a significant and large-scale phenomenon Russian avant-garde was. “ Russian avant-garde is an amazing phenomenon, very short-lived yet exceptionally rich, dazzling and, in a way, even tragic, which makes it almost parallel to Russia’s modern history. «Freedom – the reason for the world» features 78 paintings by 56 artists representing various radically innovative movements of the first three decades of XX century, such as cubo-futurism, suprematism, constructivism and others. Russian avant-garde artists destroyed or made an extraordinary mixture of traditional styles, rejected aesthetic taste, aspired to free the art from conventions, sever its bond with the old world. The exhibition presents abstract compositions by Alexander Rodchenko, Vladimir Stenberg, Aleksandra Ekster, Vera Pestel, figurative paintings by Robert Falk, Aristarkh Lentulov, Fedor Zakharov, Alexander Kuprin – all those who managed to transform avant-garde discoveries in tune with their own individuality. Painting and graphic art by Natalia Goncharova – dubbed «the Amazon of Russian avant-garde» by her contemporaries – play an important part in the exposition. Revealing strong individuality, the artist at the same time relied heavily on the traditions of medieval folk painting in her cubo-futuristic works. Influenced by futurism and surrealism, Marc Chagall does not break with tradition combining stylistic features of neo-primitivism and expressionism in his works. Among other artists, whose paintings can be seen on display, are such leaders of the «left» art as Mikhail Le-Danteau, Varvara Stepanova, Adolf Millman, Vasily Chekrygin, Lubov Popova. Andrey Sarabyanov, art critic “ Avant-garde is commonly believed to have evolved from rejection of tradition, overthrow of authorities, which is not quite true. What was peculiar to Russian avant-garde is continuity: the artists derived knowledge and inspiration from a variety of sources. As Natalia Goncharova used to say, «Everything that was created before me – is mine». ROSIZO State exhibition centre press-office Things and Things that happened Daniil Kharms and the people around him June 7 – June 29 Opening – June 7, 3 p.m. Voronezh Centre of Contemporary Art (VCCA) Daniil Kharms (1905–1942) is an outstanding Russian writer, poet, creator of absurdist fiction and also the founder of artistic unions, among which OBERIU (translated from Russian as the Union of Real Art) is the most famous. The significance of his creative work goes far beyond the limits of the artistic experiment of that epoch; it has had a great impact on literature and theatre of the second half of the twentieth century on the whole. The issues Kharms raised continue to be relevant up to now. “ It is obvious that the major exhibit is the suitcase used during the blockade of Leningrad in 1941-1942 by Yakov Druskin, a sick and malnourished philosopher, who salvaged the suitcase from Kharms’s bombed-out flat, mounted it on a sleigh and evacuated. Owing to the philosopher’s enterprise, we now possess a great number of things that used to belong to Kharms and Vvedensky. This story is familiar to everyone who takes interest in OBERIU. Igor Gulin, Kommersant «Vita Nova» specializes in limited edition collection classics and publication of biographical and literary works. Books published by «Vita Nova» are among those owned by the State Hermitage Museum, the State Russian Museum, the Russian Academy of Arts and others. The exhibition will feature Kharms’s personal belongings, recently found manuscripts, books from his personal library, photographs, authentic items connected with the life and work of the writers close to Kharms – Alexander Vvedensky, Nikolay Oleynikov, Yakov Druskin, Konstantin Vaginov and others. The exhibits include a suitcase used during the blockade of Leningrad in 1942 by Yakov Druskin to save a great number of Kharms’s manuscripts; Kharms’s radio «Telefunken», books and printed music with his marginal notes; a number of very important original manuscripts by Kharms and his close associates (e.g. an original manuscript «The Gray Notebook» by Alexander Vvedensky); unpublished works by Konstantin Vaginov, Nikolay Oleynikov and other writers. «Things and Things that happened. Daniil Kharms and the people around him» is created on the basis of private collections. A great number of exhibits and the very idea of the exhibition belong to Vita Nova publishing house, a creative partner of Platonov Arts Festival. Designer Arkady Opochanskiy (the author of the exposition design in St. Petersburg) has created the special design project especially for the exhibition in Voronezh Centre of Contemporary Art. David Borovsky. Selected works On the 80th anniversary of his birth June 7 – June 29 Opening June – 7, 4 p.m. Exhibition Hall on Kirova Street David Borovsky “ I’m astonished, I haven’t been here for over 6 years. Looking at these sketches now I remember how it all began... What I’m really amazed at is how just a nice ordinary man, absolutely ingenuous and unaware of his «largeness», all of a sudden turns into a prominent artistic and historic figure. Lev Dodin, artistic director of MDT – Europe Theatre “ How gripping and instructive it is to watch an idea conceived, even more so when you know what a magnificent performance it will eventually develop into progressing from a scratch to a sketch, from a cut to a set model. Maria Sedykh, Itogi State Central Theatre Museum named after A.A. Bakhrushin was founded in 1894 by Aleksey Bakhrushin, a well-known industrialist and patron of the arts from Moscow. Today, the museum stores over 1.5 million exhibits: costume and set sketches created by master set designers, photographs and portraits, costumes worn on stage by prominent actors, theatre programs and bills, rare editions on theatrical art, items of decorative and applied arts, etc. – a prominent Russian set designer. Such famous theatre directors as Georgy Tovstonogov, Anatoly Efros, Oleg Efremov, Lev Dodin, Ishtvan Khorvai, Valery Fokin, Leonid Kheyfets, Mikhail Levitin and Mikhail Reznikovich called him a co-author of their productions. David Borovsky’s name has appeared on a theatre bill for the first time in 1956: it was performance «Lies with Long Legs» production of Lesya Ukrainka Theatre. Soon afterwards, the young artist was invited to Moscow, where in a few years he has become the chief designer of the Taganka Theatre. Those were 30 blissful years of work in tandem with Yury Lyubimov, they have created together 20 performances, destined to become classic: «Alive», «The Dawns are Quiet Here…», «Hamlet», «The House on the Embankment»… In his late period, the artist collaborated with such directors as Lev Dodin, Adolf Shapiro and others, in addition to designing operas. «David Borovsky. Selected works» is unique in scale: the exhibition comprising costume sketches and models of the set created by Borovsky can be divided into 5 independent expositions – «Selections», «Beginning», «Borovsky in Opera», «King Lear» and «Taganka Golden Age» – presented at different times in his «Workshop». «Beginning» includes the set models and sketches for the artist’s first performances designed at the Lesya Ukrainka theatre in Kiev (Borovsky called this theatre his homeland), while «Selections» is the result of his prolific career, his last exhibition in his lifetime, exhibits for which he selected himself. «King Lear» is devoted to Lev Dodin’s performance at MDT – Europe Theatre (2006.). «Borovsky in Opera» is all about the master’s musical performances, whereas «Taganka Golden Age» reveals the plays co-authored by Borovsky and Lyubimov («Hamlet» starring Vladimir Vysotsky, «Alive» based on Boris Mozhayev’s novella and «Sharashka» based on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s novel «In the First Circle»). The exhibition also presents a book by D. Borovsky entitled «Runaway Space». «David Borovsky’s Workshop» Memorial museum, a branch of Bakhrushin theatre museum, is the set designer’s first museum in Russia. The workshop settings create the atmosphere David Borovsky used to work in, reveals his life style as well as his style in art. The display has been set up by Aleksandr Borovsky, the artist’s son. The Innermost Man Solo exhibition of Sergey Bazilev June 8 – July 5 Opening – June 8, 3 p.m. Gallery H.L.A.M. Sergey Bazilev, one of the creators of hyperrealism in our country and a representative of the «Six» group (Aleksey Tegin, Sergey Sherstyuk, Sergey Gheta, Igor Kopytyansky, Nikolay Filatov) has become famous for his projects back in the 80-s. He has taken part in more than 50 group exhibitions, has had more than 20 solo exhibitions both in Russia and abroad. As a result, the artist’s works have received incredible acclaim – his paintings are included in the collections of The State Tretyakov Gallery, The State Russian Museum, Museum Ludwig (Germany), Norton Dodge Museum (USA), Gallery Alpha Cubic (Japan). The exhibition presents the vibrant portraits of Sergey Bazilev’s «innermost» people – his friends and associates from Voronezh. Andrey Platonov’s works, especially novella «The Innermost Man», have a great significance to the artist. Platonov’s protagonist, «the wind blowing past the revolution sail», reflects the Moscow hyperrealists’ views in Soviet times. However, the most important feature both Bazilev’s modern characters and Platonov’s «innermost» people have in common is that they are not influenced by the outlook on life imposed from without. Russian hyperrealism appeared as an opposition of private life to the official Soviet reality and, unlike its European counterpart visualizing the myths of the Consumer Era, portrayed the private life of the artists and those close to them as a myth. Even today, Sergey Bazilev still depicts unpretentious episodes from the life of his nearest and dearest. Such series as «Sunlit», «Travel Notes», «Good Deeds», «Toasts», «Pink Wine» demonstrate the artist’s interest in the «innermost man» who is guided by love but not by an idea. The palette … of the pictures is not just warm. It’s hot, if not scorching. The author does love burning, almost tropical temperatures. And he openly admires the models – not without a carnival, not without relish, not without drive. There’s a clear attempt to share simply mind-blowing life power and radiant energy. Anna Zhidkikh, Bereg Jerusalem is not just a city Photo exhibition of Dmitry Brickman June 8 – june 29 Opening – June 8, 4 p.m. Voronezh regional art museum named after I.N. Kramskoy Dmitry Brickman is a famous Israeli photographer. Born in Leningrad, he now lives in Israel. In 2009 a publishing house «Piter» published his photo book «Jerusalem - not just a city». In August 2013, at the Window to Europe Film Festival in Vyborg, his photo film «Ecclesiastes. Phototranslation» was shown to public for the first time. … there are lots of different faces – happy and sad; thoughtful and joyful; dazzlingly beautiful and mysteriously charming; old and young... you name it! But, according to Dmitry Brickman, no faces are plain or silly. Such is the photographer’s vision. Andrei Maksimov, Rossiiskaya Gazeta «Jerusalem is not just a city», comprising portraits, genre photos and photojournalism, has already been displayed in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Veliky Novgorod and Novosibirsk. Dmitry Brickman’s photos reveal an attempt to understand the nature of things that people tend not to notice. An attempt to look into the eyes of the people whose fortunes were twined with ours for a fleeting moment. The photographer encourages us not only to look at the photos but also try to understand them, because each photo encapsulates somebody’s life story, even those featuring no people. For thousands of years Jerusalem has been a city where people of different cultural and religious backgrounds have been living together: Muslims, Christians, and Hebrews. This diversity is reflected in Brickman’s photos. The main idea of the festival – world’s harmony in its diversity – is in tune with the message of this exhibition. Platonov Award in Literature and Art Platonov Award, established in 2011 by the government of the Voronezh region, is annually conferred on Russian and foreign cultural figures for their significant contribution to cultural heritage of the Russian Federation, for creation of outstanding works of literature, theatre, music, visual arts, and for innovative development of humanistic and cultural traditions. The winner is determined by a Council formed of cultural figures, representatives of public organizations and public authorities. The amount of the Award is 500 thousand rubles. Boris Ekimov, a prominent writer, became the first Platonov Award laureate. In 2012 the award went to People’s Artist of Russia Lev Dodin, the artistic director of the The Maly Drama Theatre – Theatre of Europe; and in 2013 Mikhail Pletnev, the artistic director and chief conductor of the Russian National Orchestra as well as an outstanding pianist, was awarded the prize. Aleksandr Petrov, one of the most gifted animators of our time and an Oscar laureate (Academy Award for Animated Short Film «The Old Man and the Sea», 2000) has become the Platonov laureate in 2014. The artist is an acclaimed master of «animated painting» technique – he paints on glass mostly with his fingertips, hardly ever using brushes. He likes the challenge of filming complicated authors’ works, such as «The Old Man and the Sea» by Hemingway and «The Dream of a Ridiculous Man» by Dostoevsky. Incidentally, Aleksandr Petrov’s graduation work at the Advanced school for screenwriters and directors was an animated film based on Andrey Platonov’s short story «The Cow». The award ceremony will take place on one of the Platonov festival days. theatre Танец человека и экскаватора Transports Exceptionnels. The show demonstrates a possibility of physical interaction between a human and a huge machine, which by definition has nothing to do with creativity, dancing and feeling. However, the machine comes alive and an expressive, at times even dangerous dialogue unfolds between the two. The project was inspired by the choreographer’s memories of the childhood – the time when proportions took on another dimension and the street seemed an extraordinary playground. “ – is a choreographer and artistic director of the BEAU GESTE production company. His performing experiments take the audience to multidimensional worlds: Aqua ça Rrime? takes place in a pool, A quoi tu penses? is a choreographic play based on Marie Nimier’s monologues and Transports Exceptionnels is a duo of a dancer and an excavator, which has been successfully touring the world for almost ten years. The BEAU GESTE production company was created in 1981 by seven dancers from the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (National Centre of Contemporary Dance). Putting the emphasis on each dancer’s unique personality and movement – BEAU GESTE ventures into multiple performance styles: solos, cabarets, variety shows, dance conferences… all opportunities to affirm a taste for diversity, distance and humor. Besides Dominique Boivin, the company engages choreographers Christine Erbe and Philippe Priasso. It is the latter who performs pas de deux with the excavator. According to Philippe Priasso, his partner is a She, despite Her weighing a few tons. Performing in different cities, the dancer has to do with different machines, every time adapting to the size and other features of any given excavator. It’s an unexpected encounter, a double act between steel and flesh. I have chosen to work with the arm of an excavator because of its functionality and dynamics but also because it is, in a way, similar to a human arm: it takes, pushes away and caresses! Coming back to the childhood again and again, the spectator can easily recognize a circus arena, where the tamer bonds not only with ferocious beasts, but also – in a strange, extraordinary way – with the audience. Elephant, tiger, King Kong – there’s a touch of the uncontrollable about the machine. Bertolt Brecht’s play «The Good Person of Szechwan» has become a cult play for the theatrical world. In Russia it is associated with Yuriy Lyubimov’s legendary performance staged at the Taganka Theatre half a century ago. However in Butusov’s production the play has taken on an entirely new tone. The play is about a city of poor and embittered citizens, among which there is only one good person – the prostitute Shen Teh who cannot cope with the pressure of society. Butusov has transformed the play into a philosophical parable about a world which has lost its coordinates, where “good” has to turn into its direct contrary in order to survive. Original music by Paul Dessau used in «The Good Person of Szechwan» is performed by leading singers of the Pure Music ensemble led by Igor Gorsky. Oskaras Koršunovas Theatre (OKT) started as an independent project in 1998, but it has since come to hold the status of Vilnius City Theatre. Every year OKT now hosts Sirenos, one of the most prestigious theatre forums of the Baltic region. «Krapp’s Last Tape» is based on a play of the same name by one of the founders of theatre of absurd, Nobel Literature prize laureate, Samuel Beckett. The plot is formed from an old man’s recollections and reflections, as he makes a last effort to catch hold of his life while knowing that the end is fast approaching and inevitable. The main and only character of the play is Krapp, who listens to recordings of his own voice made many years ago, and makes a retrospective journey into the past. “ Krapp is played by Juozas Budraitis, one of the most famous actors of the Soviet period, a laureate of the National Lithuanian Award in the field of culture and art, and People’s Artist of Lithuania. He has played over 100 roles in films and TV productions, but his name is most closely associated with such films as «Nobody Wanted to Die», «Feelings» (Jausmai) and «Short Confession» (Maža išpažintis). Oskaras Koršunovas says that he «would never stage “Krapp’s Last Tape” without Budraitis, who perfectly suits the role of Beckett’s symbol because of his age, experience and intelligence». When you compare the voice in the records with the voice on stage you can’t stop admiring the range of acting skills, articulation and intonation skills, ranging from excited tremor to the huskiness of a sick old man. She staged her first experimental performance, «Bee Fairy Tales for Six Senses», in Vilnius. Besides sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch, the director highlights the sixth sense, the sense of the theatre, which, according to Karolina Žernytė, becomes stronger with your eyes closed. The Moscow Puppet Theatre is a modern, multigenre, high-tech theatre company. It has unusual for Russian theater management system: there is no artistic director, guest directors and designers work on the performances, and actors are selected through auditions. A number of Moscow Puppet Theatre productions have been awarded with Golden Mask awards. Performance «May Night» is a creative experiment that unites blind and sighted people in a theatre auditorium. It turns the audience into participants of a theatrical ritual: they listen, feel, touch, smell and taste, but don’t see! With the help of the actors’ proficiency (and blindfolds!) one will find himself far from auditorium into the heart of Ukrainian night. To increase the participation effect, the designer of the performance, Paulina Nešukaitytė, has developed for the blind people special wheelchairs which actors roll on a hall during performance. «May Night» was nominated for the 2012-2013 season Golden Mask National Theatre Award in the «Innovation/Best Production» category. Like a child I always wanted to change the world. When I see happy faces of actors and the blind, I feel that I made it a little bit better. The audience should have positive emotions after the performance. And I think we manage with it. He has headed the Orleans National Choreography Centre for almost 20 years. According to the Russian journal «Expert», Josef Nadj is «one of the most mysterious personalities of modern theatre». Critics still argue about which genre they should place his performances in, as elements of dance, pantomime and dramatic theatre can be noticed in Nadj’s works. Josef Nadj is not only a choreographer, but also an artist: his sculpture installations, paintings and photographs are regularly exhibited at galleries and theatres. Perhaps, the source of Nadj’s visual theatre can be found in his love for art. Josef Nadj has received the Critics’ Award at the Mimos festival in Périgueux, France, the Europe Theatre Prize for New Theatrical Realities, and Officer of the French Order of Arts and Letters. Viktoriya Nikiforova, Expert Büchner’s play «Woyzeck» has attracted the attention of quite a number of experimentalist artists, from Werner Herzog, who made a movie with Klaus Kinski, to Bob Wilson, who staged a performance with the music of Tom Waits. Josef Nadj suggests his own version of this play, left unfinished by the playwright’s early death. In his interpretation one will see Büchner’s characters: small and haunted Woyzeck, his girlfriend and corporal… But Nadj’s work is too far from original source: this performance isn’t about jealousy, murder and suicide. The director transformed characters of «Woyzeck» into golems (people made of clay and sand). Energy of the play is the most important thing for Nadj, he explores the madness of the main character and the force which leads Woyzeck to cruelty. «Woyzeck, or the Hint of Vertigo», first staged by Nadj 20 years ago, has not yet been taken off the repertoire. Such a long run is an exceptional rarity for theatre performances. «Woyzeck» received an Audience Award at the BITEF festival in Belgrade in 1998 and the 2003 Golden Mask festival award for the best foreign performance. He has received a number of prestigious awards: the «Golden Mask» (2007), the «Berlin Academy of Arts Award» (2000), «Prix du Jury de Presse (Critics’ Award)» at the Mimos International Festival of contemporary mime (2000), and several awards at the Edinburgh Festival (the «Fringe First» twice, the «Total Theatre Award» twice, as well as both the «Herald Angel» and «Herald Archangel»). «Islands» is a collection of sketches which explores the eternal conflict between dream and reality. Alongside plastic arts, the main components of the performance are music and light, which are used not only for construction of the mise en scene, but also for creation of the holistic scenic image. The performance was nominated for the «Golden Mask – Most Innovative Performance» prize in 2003. DEREVO was founded in 1988 in St. Petersburg and is now based in Dresden, Germany. Immediately after its foundation, the European press hailed it as «the cutting edge of art slicing through the Iron Curtain». Critics have likened DEREVO's style to auteur cinema, coining the term «auteur theatre» to describe the company. DEREVO performances have been successfully staged at a number of European festivals. They are clowns in the highest sense, who have mastered this area of performance. Only a clown can explain the most difficult things in simple words, see and make others see the great in ordinary things, mix the funny and the dramatic, exaggerate and simplify. These clowns do all that, and never leave the field of absolute performance. In 2006 Sláva Daubnerová founded P.A.T., an independent platform for contemporary theatre; there she creates her solo performances, which are a combination of performance art and theatre. «Untitled» is a suggestive piece of theatre, drawing the audience to a different time and space and intoxicating it with visual and aural sensations. With no exaggeration, this performance is to be called outstanding. Peter Scherhaufer, Socialand Political Weekly She surrounds herself with sounds, carefully picked props, but most importantly with emotions. With choreographer Stanislava Vlčeková, they have created a work of art, delicately touching upon loneliness and nakedness. Zuzana Uličianska, Daily SME The visual solo performance «Untitled» was inspired by work of Francesca Woodman an American photographer, famous for her black-and-white conceptual photographs. She explored the fragmentation of the body, capturing it in unusual positions, making gestures, and in motion. Surreal compositions combined with a blurred figure, caused by long exposure time, became the trademark of her works. Francesca Woodman committed suicide at the age of 22 and it was only after her death that her work started to attract attention. Most of her photographs are marked as «Untitled». The performance by Sláva Daubnerová shows Woodman’s inner world. There are no words, but the emphasis is on flawless movements, impressive stage scenery and music. «Untitled» was awarded the «Dosky» (the most prestigious Slovak theatrical prize at Divadelná Nitra festival) as the best performanc of the season. Untitled is an aesthetic experience only scarcely offered by Slovak theatre. You don't need to be adept in Woodman's photographs to enjoy it. It's enough to like watching and be able to see beauty. I have seen very few actors like him who are so genuinely happy for the opportunity to be on the stage and express freely their thoughts and emotions. Marina Davydova, Izvestia His intonation, extraordinarily ingenious, charming gestures and facial expressions, his lean body and the valiant atmosphere around him (when we mention it we can easily visualize an army of all villains that he has created in a number of movies and performances) – all this make us think that his acting can be compared with such masterpieces as works by Mikhail Zoshchenko and Nikolai Gogol. Grigory Zaslavsky, Nezavisimaya Gazeta is a theatre and film actor, awarded with People's Artist of Russia. He is the Artistic Director of his own theatre project «Mono-Duet-Trio». Filippenko was a member of the famous Taganka Theatre under the leadership of Yuri Lyubimov, worked at Vakhtangov Theatre for 20 years collaborating with such theatre directors as Eugene Simonoff, Aleksandr Remizov, Rachiah Kaplanyan, Robert Sturua and Roman Viktuk. His prolific career includes roles in more than 80 movies («Torpedo Planes», «My friend Ivan Lapshin», Azazello in «Master and Margarita» by Vladimir Bortko, Koroviev in «Master and Margarita» by Yuri Kara, and others) and more than 10 one-man shows. One of Filippenko’s favorite authors is Andrey Platonov, that’s why his performance entitled «Platonov night» at the 4th Platonov Arts Festival edition will be dedicated to Platonov’s works. Filippenko has recently started to present one-man productions where he is the only person on stage. He brilliantly plays the parts of all characters, and for this reason critics have called him «the undisputed master of one-man performances». It is even said that Aleksandr Filippenko is an embodiment of the theatre itself, because he does not need co-actors, directors and decorators. The actor says that he «just interprets theatre productions from the language of the author to that of the audience». Aleksandr Filippenko’s one-man performances have gained him the State Prize of the Russian Federation and a great number of awards at festivals in the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Russia. Fedor, played by Sergey Pronin says: «The man is knowledge and mind!» Fro, played by Vera Arbuzova, shows that «The woman is beauty and feelings». The simplicity of these fundamental vital principles is emphasized by the duet music of Volkov and Kondakov. Polina Vinogradova, Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti The jazz and choreographic performance «Russian Cosmos» presents the theatre fantasy based on Andrey Platonov's prose. The director calls the play an allegorical narrative «about how the entire universe can fit inside a woman's heart when she is in love; and that love is a great power. Keeping and protecting this feeling, people can make magic». All the music of the performance is composed and played by the well-known jazz musicians Andrei Kondakov and Vladimir Volkov. Vera Arbuzova, a ballet dancer and choreographer, Meritorious Artist of Russia, and the prize winner of the «Golden Soffit» theatre award, not only acts in the leading dramatic role, but is also the choreographer of plastic miniatures. I want to focus on the melodic sounds and rhythmic structure of this original piece of drama. In my opinion, it is one of Andrey Platonov's best plays. The main task is to convey above all Platonov's text to the audience, without loading it with any director's particular original interpretation. However, in our opinion, a dramatic reading does require some visual support and some musical, decorative and costume highlights, which will help make it even more scenic and interesting. Kamil Tukaev Voronezh State Theatre for Young Spectators (TYS) opened in 1963 with «City at Dawn» production. Boris Naravtsevich, Vadim Puchkin, Vladimir Bugrov, Mikhail Logvinov and Mikhail Bychkov headed the theatre at different times. The present chief director is People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Latushko. Since 2000 TYS has been holding «Theatre of Childhood and Youth – XXI century» festival, which brings together colleagues from all over Russia and abroad. is an actor and director, Honoured Artist of Russia. He has played roles in shows at the Voronezh Theatre for Young Spectators and the Voronezh Chamber Theatre, and also in films and TV serials, including «The Truth about Shelps» (he was awarded the prize for the «Best Actor» on «Kinotavr» film festival in June 2003), «Soldier's Decameron», «The Red Pearl of Love», «Vstrechnaya Polosa», «Twice in One River», «The Miracle», «The Photographer», «Running», and «Dostoevsky». Tukaev admits that he has chosen «The Hurdy-Gurdy» for staging, because he considers it as one of the best of Platonov's plays. The theatrical play reading of Andrey Platonov’s «The Hurdy-Gurdy» is a specially created for the 4th festival edition co-production of Voronezh Theatre for Young Spectators (TYS) and Platonov Arts Festival. Speaking of «The Hurdy-Gurdy» on the TYS stage, first of all we recall the eponymous performance of Valery Sarkisov staged in the 90s, with People's Artist of Russia Anatoly Abdulayev, Meritorious Artist of Russia Valery Blinov and other wonderful actors. Play reading staged by Kamil Tukaev will begin with a flashback visualising memories about that production on the screen. This theatrical reading can be called a comic-book version of Platonov's play. The reading will be accompanied by graphic novels, or comics, created by Voronezh graphic artist Natalia Konshina. The video content includes 20 such stories, illustrating the most significant parts of the play. Additionally, the famous Voronezh artist and sculptor Sergey Gorshkov has created wooden props and figures of the main characters especially for the performance. A great number of his performances have been shown in Germany, Poland, Great Britain, Holland, Ireland and Ukraine. Mikhail Bychkov has also been nominated several times for the Golden Mask Award. He is an award winner of «Novayay Drama Award» («Best Director», 2003) and other theatre showcases. This tragicomedy, written 80 years ago, is about an eccentric foreign professor who ends up on a starving Soviet collective farm near the Caspian Sea. Modern audiences are affected most of all by the visionary courage of Platonov's language; bold, free, but stifling with despair in the face of unfulfilled revolutionary hopes and inescapable human suffering. What worries Bychkov is maybe not so much the tragedy of the early Stalin period, but a timeless story about broken false ideals. «Fourteen Red Huts» was first staged at the 3d Platonov Festival for critics during the private rehearsal. This year the play has been included into the festival program as a finished production. The action takes place in 1932 and originally the play was supposed to be a comedy, however during the process it transformed into a tragedy. The critics claim that this play and the other dramaturgic works of Platonov are extremely complicated for the staging. However, the performance has been going on successfully in Voronezh Chamber Theatre for about a year and was included in the list of nominees for the major Russian theatre award Golden Mask Award (season 2012-2013). Roman Dolzhanskiy, Kommersant Platonov's plays often put theatre companies' skills to the test – a test, it seems, that the Chamber Theatre has courage to pass, as this is their second production based on Platonov play. The theatre PAVANA will perform its famous show Colors in Voronezh. The Platonov festival Visual Arts program has organized exhibitions of artworks from the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Polytechnic Museum, Saratov State Art Museum named after A.N. Radishchev, Museum «Moscow House of Photography/Multimedia Art Museum» and others. Solo exhibitions of Irina Zatulovskaya, Yury Petkevich, Leonid Tishkov, Emil Kapelush and Lazar Gadaev have been held. Besides, there have been graphics expositions featuring works by modern artists that have illustrated Andrey Platonov books published in our time, among them Kirill Sokolov, Nik Popov, Mikhail Verkholantsev, Alexander Antonov, Svetlana Filippova. Platonov Arts Festival is very popular with the residents of the region and, above all, Voronezh. Every year it attracts more and more guests from different Russian cities and foreign countries. This year over 40 thousand people will visit the festival events. IV International Platonov Arts Festival takes place in Voronezh from 5 to 15 June 2014. Over 300 musicians, actors, artists and literary men from 18 countries take part in its program.
