NPL team had a greatest pleasure of welcoming some of the most outstanding scientists in the fields of neuroscience and psychology such as Dr. Yann Coello, from Lille University (France), Dr. Paulo Boggio from Mackenzie University (Brazil), Dr. Mário Simões University of Coimbra and Dr. Jorge Sousa from University of Minho as committee members for NPL team member Silvana Costa’s multidisciplinary PhD defense. After years of work and never ending camaraderie and support from an entire NPL team, Silvana Costa defended her thesis. Her outstanding research and expertise helped her in securing a post doctoral position at the world renowned Kessler Institute in New Jersey, !USA. She will continue her research in Multiple Scleroses while further developing her imaging skills and developing her own experimental paradigms. We all wish for her to succeed in all her future projects while she is learning the ways of a new country as well as developing new strategies in coping with a rather cold weather. !"#$!%&'(%))%*$+$,-*./$0123$ "#!$%&!'$#!()#%*+,#!-.!$-*'/01!'$/*!2-0'$!/0!-+,!)%3!'$,##!-.!-+,!/0'#,0%'/-0%)!(%,'0#,*4!.,-2! 5/))#!60/7#,*/'8!/0!9,%0:#4!;,-.<!=%00!>-#))-!%0&!;,-.<!?#7@,/0#!>%*%)/*<!A0&!.,-2!B%:C#0D/#! 60/7#,*/'84!;,-.<!;%+)-!E-11/-<!"F!GH;F!IH!?FF!=H6!A55!JFKI!ILBFM! Patrícia Oliveira-Silva (our NPL member), Prof. Yann Coello, Prof. Paulo Boggio and Prof. Sevérine Casalis in a pleasurable tour in the surroundings of the city of Braga. ! A warm welcome dinner for Prof. Paulo Boggio with NPL team and Gonçalves. Prof. Óscar Impressions and Stories of our guests from Lille NPL: What prompted your decision for taking part in "Minho-Lille Integrated Masters in Psychology Exchange Program"? G.A.: My decision to take part into this Lille-Minho exchange program between our departments of psychology was motivated by a great opportunity to share experiences in a new scientific environment and to improve my academic level and research skills. NPL: What are your expectations in terms of things to be learned and experienced at NPL? G.A.: NPL offers a chance to observe many research approaches and techniques. One of my main expectations would be to become familiar and proficient enough in at least one electrophysiological technique such as EEG. NPL: Could you identify some similarities and differences between your home lab URECA and NPL? G.A.: Some similarities are research topics such as language, emotion and behavior. I think NPL is more involved in neuroscience and clinical studies whereas URECA is more involved in basic/fundamental research which is the bases for our complementary collaboration. NPL: Did you have difficulties in adapting to your current new environment? G.A.: We have been very well welcomed since our arrival and people are nice to us which greatly facilitates the adaptation process. At the personal level, opening myself to other ways of thinking and living is something that I was looking forward to when planning my visit to Braga. This is something very challenging to me and the new environment seems to be made for it so I hope that, with time, I will get through it. NPL: What did you find, so far, most enjoyable in your new environment, be that the people, overall culture, gastronomy, or educational settings? G.A.: So far what I found the most enjoyable is discovering Braga and the area around (landscape, city...) as well as the culture of Portugal, which is totally new to me. NPL: What prompted your decision for taking part in "Minho-Lille Integrated Masters in Psychology Exchange Program"? J.B.: I joined the exchange program to discover a new type of research in psychology that is conducted outside of France. I also wanted to discover another culture and country. ! ""! ! NPL: What are your expectations in terms of things to be learned and experienced at NPL? J.B.: I hope that what I learn here will help me later in my clinical practice, such as using EEG to develop innovative therapies. NPL: Could you identify some similarities and differences between your home lab URECA and NPL? J.B.: The two laboratories are working on different themes: URECA is more interested in spatial and motor cognition, while NPL, together with many other themes, works more on the relationship between physiological processes in different pathologies. NPL: Did you have difficulties in adapting to your current new environment? J.B.: I don't speak Portuguese, so it was difficult for me to understand people when I arrived here. But now I already understand some sentences in Portuguese. NPL: What did you find, so far, most enjoyable in your new environment, be that the people, overall culture, gastronomy, or educational settings? J.B.: The people here are very kind and welcoming. The food is very good too; I already tried Francesinha and hope to enjoy it again at another lunch soon! Furthermore I made several travel trips with the ENS Minho (association of Erasmus) and discovered some wonders of Portugal such as Obidos, Fatima, Viseu... NPL: What prompted your decision for taking part in "Minho-Lille Integrated Masters in Psychology Exchange Program"? C.M.: I wanted to join this program because I wanted ! """! ! to do a semester abroad. Another reason was to discover another psychology laboratory abroad (1) to see how other researchers are working on the subject of psychology and (2) to have a greater knowledge of what is happening elsewhere (3) to be able to incorporate all these knowledge into my future clinical practice. NPL: What are your expectations in terms of things to be learned and experienced at NPL? C.M.: I would like to learn how to use some of the latest technologies in measuring brain activation to provide a link between cognitive impairment and brain activity. Learn how to make the link between brain anatomy, brain activation and cognitive impairment. NPL: Could you identify some similarities and differences between your home lab URECA and NPL? C.M.: URECA laboratory researchers work more on cognitive models and not on the relationship between brain activation and cognitive processes. NPL: Did you have difficulties in adapting to your current new environment? C.M.: Before I did not understand Portuguese very well, but now I understand it better. NPL: What did you find, so far, most enjoyable in your new environment, be that the people, overall culture, gastronomy, or educational settings? C.M.: I think Portuguese are very friendly and helpful. Food is different but very good. Your country is very beautiful! For culture: I have previewed it already but I expect to discover yet another which is the very religious side of the Portuguese during the Holy Week. Conclusion: I’m really happy to be here and more than at beginning!!! ! ! "#! ! "! In a friendly atmosphere for learning, brainstorming as well as sharing knowledge and information!
