TWIGGI/REMY – THEN: When we last wrote about young
Twiggi, she had come a long way from the 5-pound, emaciated,
severely ill girl we met in July 2012. After multiple transfusions,
medications and an intense nutritional regimen, Twiggi gained 7
pounds in just 4 months.
TWIGGI – THEN
REMY/TWIGGI – NOW: Today this girl is called Remy, named
after the young rat who aspires to become a world chef in the
movie, Ratatouille. Her new mom, who shares the same
passion, is none other than Kam, daughter of Remy’s doting
foster parents, Barbara and Richard. Having already stolen the
hearts of her family, Remy transitioned quite nicely after her
adoption in January 2013. Today she serves as an MSRNT
ambassador along with her Uncle Charlie, also an MSRNT alum,
watching over the new kids who pass through on their way to
REMY – NOW
forever homes. Once teetering close to death, Remy is now an
energetic, playful girl who adores toys and is, in her family’s words, “in love with life.”
MAGOO – THEN: In May 2012, Magoo arrived at MSRNT looking
about as ragged as they come. His body half bald with a severe
flea infestation and his face hiding behind a tangled mass of
matted hair, Magoo suffered from a severe case of the itchies.
Before long, it was discovered that fleas were not his only
problem as he was diagnosed with Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome
and allergic skin disease. Magoo began a series of testing and
treatment for his condition and settled in for a long stay with his
foster family where he received the ultimate in loving care.
MAGOO – THEN
MAGOO – NOW: After a year with MSRNT, Magoo’s condition
was responding to treatment and he emerged as one very
handsome boy in his cotton-white coat. In May 2013, Magoo
was welcomed into his new forever home by loving parents who
have made him part of their everyday lives, taking him for walks
on the Katy Trail and even to brunch on the patio at local cafes.
Life is good, and as Magoo would say, “Arooo, rooo, rooo!”

DESPERADO – THEN
DESPERADO – THEN: When Twiggi arrived at MSRNT, we thought we’d seen it all. Then
came Desperado. Draped in a t-shirt inside a plastic tub, Desperado was found outside
an emergency veterinary clinic on a frigid winter night. His little body was abused and
emaciated with broken bones, burns, and other wounds. Lifeless and totally void of
emotion, Desperado was hanging to life by a thread. What happened next defies all
explanation. In the capable hands of our veterinary partners – with assistance from
what many believe to be a divine power – Desperado survived. Not only did he survive,
he thrived!
DESPERADO – NOW: Hard to believe but, yes, the dog in the “then” photo and the
dog in the “now” photo are one and the same. Today, Despy – as he is fondly
called – is happy and healthy and lives the good life with Mom, Dad and brother
Frank, a black Schnauzer. To MSRNT and everyone who rallied to support Despy in
his darkest hours, his Mom says, “Words cannot express how much we love &
adore this guy! We are so happy to have him in our lives. Thank YOU!”
JORDY – THEN
DESPERADO - NOW
JORDY/JACK – THEN: Jordy was a 7-month-old cutie who learned the hard way that not
everything is meant to be eaten. Surrendered out of necessity by his owners to MSRNT in
late February 2013, little Jordy was suffering from a case of severe pancreatitis and
dehydration. Emergency exploratory surgery revealed an
enormous clump of inedible matter blocking his digestive tract.
The life-threatening mass was removed.
JACK/JORDY – NOW: This once-lifeless boy is now the picture of puppy health and is
living the good life with Mom, Dad, and two Schnauzer siblings, MSRNT alum Riley
(formerly Tammy), and Max. Jack, as he is now known, loves to play and has a toy box
brimming with toys. He also loves to eat – “like a horse,” claims his Mom who adds that
he is carefully watched to assure that no non-food items find their way to his tummy!
Jack’s family is grateful for Jack’s second chance in life. Says his Mom, “He’s a doll. We
love him so much!”
SUKI – THEN
JACK – NOW
SUKI – THEN: As the rest of us were celebrating Independence Day, 3-year-old Suki
found herself alone and broken in a local shelter. At just 10 pounds, Suki was
suffering from a severe break in a hind leg – a break that was later found to be an
“old” injury in which her femur bone was actually broken in two separate pieces –
no doubt a painful condition endured by Suki for quite some time. Shelter staff was
touched by the sweet, positive spirit of this girl in the face of adversity and reached
out to MSRNT for help. After receiving a bone graft, placement of a plate, and
weeks of therapy, in addition to much-needed dental treatment, Suki was ready to
join her forever home.
SUKI – NOW: Once lame and in pain, Suki is now running free and easy in the big
yard at her new home. In September 2013, she became the only fur child of a
couple who gives this good-natured little girl the good life she has always deserved.
“I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from
the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other
source.”

ZOE/KALIE – THEN: Three-year-old Zoe arrived at MSRNT early this fall, seemingly
happy and healthy. A pretty little girl with a charming personality, she was already
attracting potential adopters and wasn’t expected to stay with us for long.
Suddenly, an enormous lump began to grow in her neck. A trip to the vet revealed a
blocked salivary gland which was drained to provide relief. As a permanent fix,
surgery to remove the gland was recommended, but dogs have multiple salivary
glands and the offending gland could not be identified, despite x-rays and other
diagnostic tests.
ZOE – THEN
KALIE/ZOE – NOW: To look at this pretty girl now, no one would ever believe that
her neck was once enlarged to the point of disfigurement. And, although our vets
believe her salivary gland will become blocked again at some time in the future,
Zoe – who now goes by Kalie – was adopted in mid-November. Her new parents
are fully aware of her condition. Nevertheless, they love this little girl and are
prepared to provide treatment when the time comes. In return, Kalie is sharing
that Schnauzer love with her new family which includes her parents and three
other Schnauzers, one of which is recent MSRNT alum, Gizmo (formerly Jackie).
KALIE – NOW
DENNIS – THEN: Dennis is a perfect example of the resiliency of dogs. When he
arrived at MSRNT early this fall, a victim of hoarding and cruelty, he was depressed and
withdrawn. And for good reason! Physically, this 4-year-old boy was emaciated with
intestinal parasites, raging ear and skin infections and a hematoma on his ear. His ear
flap had to be cut and drained because of broken blood vessels due to
incessant scratching. On top of it all, he suffered
from an upper respiratory infection. After just two
weeks of TLC provided by his MSRNT foster parents
DENNIS – THEN
and excellent medical care provided by our
veterinary partners, Dennis was emerging as a spunky, fun-loving boy, tossing
toys in the air.
DENNIS – NOW: With his tragic past behind him, Dennis was adopted in midNovember by a family with two children and a female Schnauzer named Daisy.
Reports are that the kiddos dearly love both dogs and that Dennis is wearing out
sister Daisy during playtime!
DENNIS (right) – NOW
AMANDA – THEN: When Amanda was released from a shelter on the southwest edge
of the metroplex, she arrived at MSRNT with several skin tumors and multiple skin tags,
along with a number of bad teeth. Our veterinary partners immediately went to work,
removing the larger tumors – which were found to be benign – and extracting the bad
teeth in order to preserve her health and her smile. At
that time, Amanda was also thought to be totally deaf.
AMANDA – NOW: Now in good shape, this girl
exemplifies the unique nature of an older dog.
AMANDA – THEN
With her large tumors gone, she is gorgeous in her jet-black coat, but inside her
outward beauty lies an even more beautiful heart of gold. Amanda is gentle – and
sweet – and wants only to give love and to be loved. And, miraculously, at a recent
adoption event, Amanda appeared responsive to the sounds of her environment.
We are grateful that this special girl has a second chance in life. As we “go to press”
with this issue of Schnauzer Tales, Amanda is waiting for that very special family to
call her own. Could that very special family be your own?

To those of you who contributed to the care of these sweet, gentle souls, we sincerely thank you for your kind
generosity. If you would like to open your heart to help the ICU Dogs at this time, please visit our website’s ICU
page. Thank you for helping us so that we may help them.
MSRNT is dedicated to providing loving care to each dog in its adoption program. Though we rejoice in our “success
stories,” there are a small number of dogs who either do not respond favorably to treatment or develop additional
conditions that prevent them from achieving full recovery. Such was the case with Gallagher and Kelsey. Both dogs
spent many months with us and became a very real part of the MSRNT family. Everyone knew Gallagher and Kelsey
– and everyone loved them. We will always be grateful to them both for their love and for the lessons they taught
us about life.
GALLAGHER – This popular boy – MSRNT’s 1000th rescue dog – arrived in the summer of
2012 – neglected, lonely, and with various ailments. His journey with us included
everything from placing him on a healthy diet, the removal of tumors, cataract surgery
and, ultimately, having an eye removed. Throughout it all, Gallagher was a sweet, loving
boy who even had two prospective adopters when he was ready. Regrettably, Gallagher
developed congestive heart failure before he could join his forever family. He spent the
final months of his life in his foster home where his foster mom, Carole, devoted herself to
providing the loving care he had never known in his prior life. “Gally,” as he was fondly
called, left us peacefully in late July 2013.
GALLAGHER
KELSEY – This beautiful, sweet girl came to MSRNT in the summer of 2012 when her
owners could no longer care for her and her companion, Bear. Once in rescue, we
discovered that Kelsey had SARDS, which causes sudden blindness. While her friend
was adopted, we continued to care for Kelsey to treat her medical conditions, and help
her find love and light in a world without vision. With an amazing spirit of resiliency,
Kelsey was adjusting to her new life and living happily in her foster home when she was
diagnosed with kidney failure in the spring of 2013. Kelsey spent the remaining months
of her life receiving the ultimate in care from her devoted foster parents, Barbara and
Richard, who treated her as one of their own. In September 2013, Kelsey crossed the
Rainbow Bridge where, no doubt, she and Gally are now running free in a world that
knows no pain.
KELSEY
Appropriately, this issue of Schnauzer Tales is dedicated
to the memory of

who left this
world with their paw prints on our hearts.

Folks involved in animal rescue
understand how the decision by just one
person to adopt a rescue dog and give it a
loving home saves a life and makes all the
difference in the world to that animal.
But MSRNT’s partner, the Jason Debus
Heigl Foundation—which helps MSRNT
treat heartworm positive and ICU dogs—
also understands the power of just one
person, and has taken that concept one
giant step further. It created a company
called ‘Just One,’ which sells high-quality
pet-related items, with a portion of the
proceeds given back to help homeless
animals in the pet community.
The idea for Just One came from actress
Katherine Heigl and her mother Nancy, a
previous MSRNT adopter. Its primary
mission is to support spay/neuter
programs and promote public education
on animal issues in the greater Los
Angeles area and well beyond. It helps
thousands of dogs each year by promoting
shelter adoptions, transporting adoptable
dogs to low or no-kill shelters in other
areas where the dog can more easily be
adopted, and creating and implementing
educational programs to increase general
knowledge about the plight of homeless
animals.
“Tragically, there are more than 10,000
companion animals euthanized
unnecessarily every day in the U.S.,” says
Jennifer Brent, executive director of the
Jason Debus Heigl Foundation. “One of
our primary focuses is spay/neuter—it is a
huge need. We believe these animals
have an innate right to life, and our work
helps fund shelters and rescue
organizations, and provide consumer
education to help break this cycle,” says
Brent.
SCHNAUZER TALES
Just One created a line of pet products,
such as collars, leashes, apparel and other
pet accessories to bring value to
consumers, and help fund the
foundation’s work. All of its products are
high-quality. Collars, for example, are
made with durable nylon and a nonallergenic silicone coating. All items
feature the Just One logo, to help build
awareness of the organization and its
mission.
Brent says the point is that every little
thing makes a difference, whether it’s
getting your dog spayed, neutered or
vaccinated, buying one collar or donating
one dollar. “The funds help us fight
euthanasia, puppy mills, and animal
abuse. Tackling these problems can make
a huge difference for many animals,”
Brent stresses.
MSRNT encourages its supporters to back
the work of Just One by purchasing its
products. “The Jason Debus Heigl
Foundation has been very supportive of
MSRNT, helping us rescue dozens of
heartworm positive and ICU dogs over the
years,” says MSRNT President, Carole
Smith. “We know first-hand what a
difference just one person can make, and
we wholeheartedly support their mission,
and the great work being done by this
foundation.”

Third Annual MSRNT Bark in the Park Reunion – October 5, 2013
Proudly for MSRNT, our annual Bark in the Park Reunion has now become a fall tradition! Our adopted
Schnauzers and their families and friends joined us again at Flagpole Hill in Dallas for an afternoon of fun and
games. In spite of the challenging weather we had a good turnout … and, most importantly, it didn’t stop the
excitement of having approximately 70 Schnauzer alumni and siblings talking and playing with their MSRNT
cousins.
Tami Fuller and her team of volunteers did an outstanding job organizing the festivities again this year. New to
our event were members of the Lone Star Miniature Schnauzer Club of Dallas who conducted grooming
demonstrations and handed out packets on Caring for your Schnauzer. Also new was Sharon from Brewster’s
Barkery who sold bandanas, dog biscuits, mats and other trinkets. Brewster’s Barkery gave a portion of their
profits to MSRNT.
A special thanks and appreciation to our event photographer, Greg, and his trusty team, Katherine, Mary, and
Carole D. for the complimentary souvenir photo provided again this year. You can see the results of Greg’s
magnificent work by checking his website on our 2013 Bark in the Park Photo Gallery. Thanks also to our roaming
photographers, Pam and Jeff for catching all those great impromptu shots featured on page 8 and on page 9.
Now also a tradition at the event was the unveiling of the new MSRNT Calendar. Our 2014 issue features the
winners of our latest calendar photo contest. We were pleased that we sold over 60 calendars during the event.
Finally, back by popular demand were the cake walk, raffles, and doggie contests, all of which provided
entertainment.

Introducing the 2013 Bark in the Park Royal Couple:
Queen Ursula (3 years old, dad Mike) was
unable to stay to accept her crown due to
pressing royal duties. Later, puparazzi found
her making an appearance at an MSRNT
adoption event and snapped the winning shot!
King Max (left – 5 years old, parents Terry
& Phyllis) proudly assumed his royal title.
All hail King Max!
All in attendance agreed that everyone had a great time! For MSRNT foster parents and volunteers, we
enjoyed the opportunity to visit with our former fosters and their forever families! Thank you all for coming
and we hope to see you at the 2014 Bark in the Park, scheduled for October 4, 2014. In the words of our
Adoption Coordinator, Sheryl, “all in all it was a fantastic day in Schnauzerland!”
