The stuppy raINbow Plus
The Stuppy Rainbow Plus is an excellent choice for the
commercial grower who wants an affordable, productive
and profitable growing space. Its quality, performance,
value and versatility allow growers to cover anything
from 1,000 to 1 million square feet. The strength and
durability of the Rainbow Plus delivers years of efficient,
dependable crop protection and environmental control.
The Rainbow Plus features:
•All-aluminum gutters and Allied Gatorshield steel
tubing
•Either Rainbow (rounded-arch) or Diamond (peakedarch) profiles (a wing system can be adapted to both
roof styles)
•A low-profile roof line to reduce heated surface area
and to help stratify the air, increasing the efficiency of
summer cooling
•Y and L connectors that are hot-dipped galvanized
after fabrication, and help make construction simple
and easy, providing built-in connections for columns,
bows, horizontal bottom members (HBM) and eaves
•Direct connection of bows to columns through the
Y and L connectors to accommodate higher loads
with open columns; easy connection of an HBM or
truss allows the Rainbow Plus to meet the toughest
conditions and codes
•Purlin and bracing connections made using a brace
band and purlin block, eliminating holes to maintain the
full strength of the bow for roof support (drop purlins
are available on the Diamond to increase condensate
control)
•Direct connection of the bows and columns that allow
the gutter to be designed for work and water removal,
not to be a structural member; the gutter also has an
extruded-in Polylock, making installation of covering
more efficient

To build

The rate of expansion holds steady
Key Points
1
Growers planning to make additions to their growing space
this year stayed about even with last
year’s numbers.
2
Those looking to expand are
adding larger spaces than in the
previous year.
3
Those expanding have larger
budgets for upgrades this year
than last year.
T
he spring selling season appears to
be a success. Sales were up and the
weather was nice. The economy is
starting to improve as key markets for the
horticulture industry start to recover.
And as all of these factors combine, it can
start to cause a stir in the hearts of growers.
They can see the future now without glasses
of gloom and doom but instead with hope
that the worst is behind and the best truly is
to come.
As that sense of optimism starts to
return, it also means that more and more
growers will start to consider greenhouse
expansions and new builds. Last year 33.7
percent of growers planned to add produc-

tion area, and this year that number is
close to the same at 31.7 percent. But
with the good season this year, some
growers may be waiting until next year
to make sure it’s not a fluke, so that
number may rise slightly in 2013.
Also similar to last year is the
amount of space growers plan to add.
Last year 25.6 percent of those planning additions aimed to add less than
10,000 square feet, and this year that
number is 21.8 percent. That’s good for
builders, as last year just 8.2 percent of
growers adding on to their operations
were looking to build spaces greater
than 10,000 square feet, but this year
it’s 10 percent. It’s a slight increase, but
the size of operations is important, so
if more growers are adding larger facilities, that could indicate that business
is going well for the larger producers

or that more smaller players have outgrown their current operations and are
jumping into a larger pond.
Another bright spot in the survey
this year is that pockets seem to be
opening up as budgets increase for
facility upgrades. Most notably, those
budgeting for upgrades of more than
$200,000 jumped from just 3.6 percent last year to 20 percent this year.
In a more economical category, even
those with budgets between $25,000
to $50,000 improved from 19.6 percent
last year to 26.7 percent this year.
Take a few moments to explore the
survey results and compare them to last
year’s findings. We hope you’ll be looking to expand this year and that this
research can help you understand the
industry better as well help you make
decisions about your own business.

Codes
Changing the code
How NGMA is ensuring
greenhouses have a future
By Kristy J. O’Hara
T
wo years ago, members of the National Greenhouse Manufacturers
Association (NGMA) realized that
changes were coming to the energy
codes that could adversely affect the industry and its future.
“If we don’t do something on the energy codes, then there won’t be anything
specific to greenhouses, so then the code
officials, architects and engineers would
have to look at greenhouses like they’re
regular buildings, which means things
like the glazing or covering for greenhouses could become an issue,” says Matt
One touch cooling.
Screening when you need it
just makes sense.
Experience on-demand cooling with Harmony
retractable screens. Traditional glazing or
whitewashing is fixed in one place all the time,
so you’re losing sunlight when you really need it.
Harmony retractable screens let you diffuse light
only when you need it: when the sun is too intense.
A revolutionary combination of transparent and
white strips lets more light onto your crop while
maintaining a lower temperature. Protect, cool
and bring light only when you want to – when your
plants need it. Cooling on your plants’ terms just
makes sense.

Stuppy, president of Stuppy Inc. and
NGMA president. “Because we have to let
sunlight in for the plants to grow, greenhouses aren’t comparable on insulation
values as regular buildings are.”
He says it could also pose problems
with the lighting that’s used because
they may not be as energy efficient.
“Because there isn’t any language
specific to greenhouses, the bad thing
that could happen is the greenhouses
get lumped in with regular people buildings, so it puts a lot of jeopardy into everything from process equipment to
Codes
heating and cooling and operation of a
greenhouse,” Stuppy says.
And that can create regulations for
things that don’t really apply and can
cause problems for growers that could
affect their businesses.
“Our objective is to make sure a
greenhouse is treated as a greenhouse,
which is more of a farm, an agricultural
building,” says Craig Humphrey, vice president of engineering for Nexus Corp. and
chair of the NGMA codes and standards
committee. “Nobody wants anything bad
to happen, but it’s not like a four-story
building with customers or residential.
It’s certainly less on the scale of potential problems that could happen when
all you’ve got in there is plants and not
people. The objective is always to make
sure they’re not getting overly regulated.”
Seeing these changes and potential problems, the NGMA decided to be
proactive in changing building codes
so that greenhouses could continue to
function. This year it started a three-year
road to make sure greenhouses don’t get
lumped with regular buildings.
First, it hired a company called InterCode Inc. (ICI) to help with the process. ICI
specializes in modifying building codes
and has the expertise and experience to
help NGMA succeed in their efforts.
“By using them, we’re able to basically navigate the building code process
appropriately so that our proposals and
ideas have a better chance of being adopted by the building code,” Stuppy says.
He says the cost of hiring ICI should be
between $150,000 and $170,000 for the
three-year period, and the money will
come through assessments to all member companies during that same time
period.
“That’s impossible for one or two of us
to put together, but as a group, we think
that’s what a trade organization should
be doing,” Humphrey says.
This year is all about making the first
changes to the building code.
“The NGMA took on a task this year
of ultimately getting greenhouses classified within their own section of the code,”
Humphrey says.
The first stage of this process was presenting a proposal to the building code
body, the International Code Council in
Dallas this spring, which accepted the

proposed changes.
“It was probably easier than it should
have been but it was a difficult process
because of all the prior work we had to
get done to get the proposal written,

and written in such a way that someone
would understand and go along with our
logic,” Humphrey says.
Now it goes on to a committee in October, and there it would need to get a
two-thirds vote against it in order for it to
not be adopted.
“Now it has to be, more or less, voted
against,” Humphrey says. “It’s passed the
technical committee, and now then there
needs to be a two-thirds vote against it
in the full membership. That’s not a usual
happening. If we would have been voted
down at the technical committee level,
then we would need the two-thirds vote
to actually get it passed, which would
have been very difficult.”

concerns. NGMA doesn’t anticipate any
major obstacles in this regard. So far, the
only comments have been grammatical
in nature.
“It’s just the way the language is written,” Stuppy says. “They get very particular about commas and things like that.”
But at this point, it’s likely to go
through — the more challenging part
was the committee in the spring. NGMA
will have representatives at the meeting
in October to make sure the organization
can address anything that comes up and
ensures it still goes through because this
is the basis of the next two years’ efforts.
“Our first step here, by changing and
modifying the building code, is to be able
to provide a good foundation for doing
what we really need to do, which is the
green construction and energy codes,”
Stuppy says.
Assuming it passes, then in 2013, the
organization will start making its proposals for the energy conservation code,
which will be more difficult and will all
go through a similar process. If adopted, then in 2014, it will make proposed
changes and recommendations for the
green construction code, which will also
be more difficult.
“Then once 2015 rolls around, then
we’ll have our accomplishments in the
building code, and over the course of the
years after that, as states adopt the building codes, greenhouses will be properly
treated in the building code,” Stuppy says.
Ultimately if the codes are all successful, it can help greenhouse businesses

“If the building official actually looked
at what’s going on in that building, the
setbacks could be a lot smaller because
you don’t have fire issues that you would
have if this was a 20-apartment building,”
Humphrey says. “Then, if he could get

Wadsworth
Control Systems
As we celebrate our 60th year in business, Wadsworth
Control Systems continues to meet and exceed growers’ needs for greenhouse automation.
Wadsworth introduced the first climate control in North
America, and at that time Iaborers performed much of
what is automated today. Growers often slept in their
greenhouses on cold nights, concerned for the safety
of their crops. Wadsworth Control Systems was founded on the premise that growers knew their needs, and
Wadsworth conceived products to meet those needs.
Today, as we celebrate our 60th anniversary, Wadsworth Controls is still listening. We design and produce
greenhouse systems based on current research, new
technology and changing markets, all of which support
growers, who remain the central focus of our business.
Our innovative and reliable curtain, vent and control
products are found throughout the climate control industry, including research facilities, universities, wholesale production growers, garden centers, botanical gardens and hobbyists. Wadsworth’s versatile products are
designed to suit hydroponic, aquaponic and traditional
greenhouse applications. We offer excellent technical
support and training.
Wadsworth Control Systems has the experience,
products, durability and forward-thinking technical staff
to meet all your environmental control needs.

Schaefer
Svensson
Schaefer Ventilation is celebrating 61 years of product
and service excellence this year! Schaefer serves the
greenhouse industry with a complete line of high quality
ventilation equipment — from wet wall evaporative cooling systems, portable evaporative coolers, low and high
pressure misting fans, air circulators, exhaust fans, industrial wash down duty fans and radiant heaters. They have
the thermal comfort solution to meet your needs.
On Demand Cooling with Harmony Screens
Harmony solar reflection retractable screens from
Svensson deliver on-demand cooling.
Traditional glazing or whitewashing is fixed in one
place, so you’re losing sunlight when you really need it.
Harmony retractable screens let you diffuse light only
when you need it: when the sun is too intense.
Testing at a greenhouse in Spain clearly showed Harmony F’s open structure design offers high-grade diffusion for greater light delivery into the canopy. The
results: excellent cooling, improved plant quality, and
shortened production.
The Harmony XLS family with its closed structure design reflects sunlight plus retains heat in the greenhouse
when there is no sun or the outdoor temperature drops.
This delivers all the cooling and light diffusion benefits
plus the power for energy savings.
Harmony screens let you protect and cool your crops,
and does this by scattering light to a great degree. But
it reduces the overall light transmission to the crop. So,
diffuse the light only when the sun is intense with an on
demand, movable solution.
Products are available in many configurations and sizes
to provide the most efficient and effective environment
for any size greenhouse. Schaefer sells through a
national and international network of dealers and
distributors. For product selection assistance, please
contact your local dealer or contact Schaefer for the
name and contact information for the dealer nearest
you. Visit Schaefer at www.schaeferfan.com or call
(800) 779-3267 or (320) 251-8696.

Port-a-Cool
Port-A-Cool portable evaporative cooling units entered
the marketplace in 1991, offering the first version of a
unit designed to provide economic, effective cooling
wherever it was needed. Today, the company’s consistent growth rate and continued expansion in product
lines have positioned it as a global leader in the portable
evaporative cooling business with distributors of Port-ACool LLC products — including KÜÜL pads media — in
50 states and 56 countries.
Port-A-Cool LLC selected Center, Texas, for its location
in the beginning and has never considered moving. This
small town still maintains the look and feel of the original
community, while also enjoying the modernization due
in large part to the manufacturing and technological advances of companies like Port-A-Cool LLC choosing it for
its location.
These portable evaporative cooling products have
proven highly effective in virtually unlimited uses ranging
from agricultural and horticultural applications, manufacturing, industrial, business, entertainment, sports, home
and hobby — anywhere that cooling is needed and traditional air conditioning is impractical or cost prohibitive.
With a strong network of distributors, Port-A-Cool,
LLC continues to expand its worldwide market horizons.
