Sacrario Militare di Redipuglia
Address
Via Terza Armata
34070 Redipuglia
Italy
.
Redipuglia, the largest Military Shrine in Italy, rises on the
western side of Mount Sei Busi, which was bitterly contended
during World War I because, although not very high, it would
allow a great scope of access control from West to the first steps
onto the karst shelf. The palatial stairs where the urns of the
more than 100.000 dead are lined up, together with the
monolithic one of the Duke of Aosta – third army’s commander at its base, convey the image of a Great Unit’s battle array in the
field, with its commander at the head. Here lay the mortal rests
of 100.187 Dead: 39.857 known and 60.330 unknown (text from
website Via Alpina).

Woodland Cemetery
Skogskyrkogården
Address
Sockenvägen 479
122 33 Stockholm
Sweden
http://www.kyf.stockholm.se/
.
The Woodland Cemetery - Skogskyrkogården - in Enskede,
southern Stockholm, was built between 1919 and 1940 by the
architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. On a ridge
overgrown with pines they created a sacred landscape with
several small chapels arranged to interact with the natural
surroundings. It expresses on a large scale the design aspirations
that characterized Swedish architecture before and after World
War II. Asplund mainly devoted himself to the buildings, with the
Crematorium standing out as a central work both in his own
career and in the architecture of the 1930s as a whole.
Skogskyrkogården was inscribed on the World Heritage List in
1994. The justification of the World Heritage Committee was:
"Skogskyrkogården is an outstanding example of how architecture
and landscaping from our century combine to make a cemetery.
This creation has had a great influence on the design of
cemeteries all over the world."

Woodland Chapel Skogskapellet
Address
Sockenvägen 479
122 33 Stockholm
Sweden
http://www.kyf.stockholm.se/
.
In the beginning of the 20th century Stockholm’s burial grounds
had to be expanded, so an international architect competition
was initiated in order to ensure the dignity, artistic quality and
harmony of the buildings, vegetation and landscape of a new
cemetery - Skogskyrkogården, the Woodland Cemeter south of
Stockholm. A part of the Cemetery and the first chapel in the
park, the Woodland Chapel, designed by E. G. Asplund, was
completed in 1920. The wooden chapel with its white-washed
walls and black roof is adorned by Carl Milles’ sculpture ”The
Angel of Death”, iron gates designed by Asplund and an altar
painting by artist Gunnar Torhamn. Erik Gunnar Asplund died in
1940. He rests beside the Chapel of Faith under a simple epitaph
bearing the words ”His work lives”.

Crematorium Meer-Bloemhof
Address
Buytenparklaan 1

.
In Corten steel, MYJ found a fitting symbolism for a crematorium;
according to the architects, the gradual corrosion of the
untreated sheets exemplifies the transitoriness of life. The steel
sheets in question guide visitors in the leave-taking process,
forming a curved wall of gradually increasing height that curls
around the auditorium like a protective shell. From this central
space, the wall first opens up to the surrounding water and then
steps backwards in the direction of the reception rooms in the
brick section of the building. The balustrade of the balcony on
this side is from the same pre-formed and perforated steel
sheets, as is the bridge connecting the new building with the
existing cemetery. Thanks to the loose, flowing form and the
weathered aspect of the steel façade, the crematorium is both a
landmark in and a natural component of landscaped
surroundings.

Textil Headquarters
Address
Banjickih zrtava Street
31000 Uzice
Serbia
http://www.textilue.co.yu
.
Textil's commercial building is located in Uzice's industrial zone,
between the motorway, the railway, warehouses, a football field
and a cemetery. It has therefore continued to expand internally
for most of its past. The new building has literally swallowed the
old one. The architects delivered what they themselves describe
as 'anti-design' in reaction to the surroundings and context.
Ignoring all those external factors they are powerless to change,
they concentrated on the interior. The result is a building with an
interesting perforated façade that reveals nothing of the very
efficient spatial organization inside. The building breathes from
the inside out: it has its own micro climate, regulated by a
one-storey atrium and eight roof lights on the flat floor. Although
the old structure has been completely absorbed by the new one,
it is still clearly defined by rectangular columns and visible
beams.

Ortona Cemetery
Address
Via Roma
66026 Ortona
Italy
.
This project envisaged the extension of an existing cemetery
complex -built for the commemoration of World War I victims- by
adding a final element, visible from both land and sea. The 280
new recesses are organized, like the old ones, in parallel lines.
The funerary buildings are inserted between the lines in a comb
pattern. One line, perpendicular to the rest, marks the periphery
of the complex on the sea side. In order to avoid a monolithic or
monotonous look, the architect alternated the closed volumes
with open spaces, which makes the complex considerably lighter.
Social space is enclosed in volumes built in hard materials,
circulation space in volumes plastered in an unusual pink colour
for the stairs, and white for the corridors. Every time the walls
are interrupted by a path or empty space, it provides a scenic
view towards the sea, inviting the visitor to pause. Ortona
Cemetery is a 'sottovoce' in the loud choir of contemporary
architecture.

Triodos Bank International

Nieuweroordweg 1

.
On a very special site, situated along a stately avenue, the
Triodos Bank built a new office for their international banking
activities. For over a century, part of the site was in use as a
Roman Catholic cemetery, which in 1988 was designated a
municipal monument. Triodos’ idea of ‘sustainable banking’
proved to be very successful. By attracting funds to support
socially and environmentally responsible projects, a novel
opportunity arose: to use the available money for setting up new
projects worldwide. That meant more work, so more space was
needed. The new Triodos International is 52 % more
energy-efficient than the standard requirement for office
buildings. The building is divided into four angular volumes, each
clad in its own material: wood, brick, glass and titanium. The
entrance, with consultation rooms and a central hall doubling as
an auditorium, is located at the pivot. The glass walls of the
consultation rooms in the entrance hall can be ‘frosted’ if privacy
is needed.

At the end of the 1990's, the Jewish cemetery was in a bad
condition, due to bombings during World War II and violation of
graves. The original plans of the cemetery buildings (architect
Johann Hoeniger, 1892) were found in archives. The Lapidarium
has been built on the foundations and cellar of the original
mourning hall, next to the entrance to the cemetery. The street
façade is closed, as an extension of the cemetery wall. Only a
small part of the façade is slightly set back and glazed, to give a
glimpse into the exposition hall. A horizontal elongated window
band along the street symbolizes the Eternal Light. The façade
looking to the cemetery is entirely glazed. The Lapidarium
displays 64 gravestones, whose original location could not be
determined. Ten information panels explain the Jewish funeral
rituals.

.
The serenity of a cemetery and the liveliness of a residential area
combine in this project. The orthogonal grid of grave-gardens is
sliced through by a diagonal alley, an oval walkway and a twisting
bicycle route. A playground makes the transition from cemetery
to residential area. Two buildings are set into the grid. A modest
building forms one of the walls surrounding the forecourt. Along
with the reception desk, it houses offices, workshops and sanitary
facilities. Its large canopy shelters waiting visitors. A square
concrete building offers mourning relatives and friends a space
for contemplation. Once crossed the pond in which the building
stands, they find themselves cut off from the outside world for a
while. The only thing left is light, concentrated in a ribbon just
above the floor and under the roof, reflected in the pond,
determined by time, season and weather. The building serves as a
landmark as well, even at night, when its reverse pyramidal roof
is lit from the inside.

Igualada Cemetery
Address
Carrer dels Països Baixos 23
08701 Igualada
Spain
.
Igualada Cemetery (also known as Cemetery Nou) was built by
Carme Pinòs and Enric Miralles after an architectural competition
held in 1984. Following the concept of a river of life as a "swirly
stream that eroded the smooth curves of the banks of burial
niches" (Peter Buchanan), they created a modern city of the
dead. The cemetery is a site-specific sculpture embedded in the
hilly landscape of Catalonia. In addition to a sloping link-up road
that leads to a central funeral square, the architects provided a
(still unfinished) chapel and a mortuary building. The emotional
impact of the project focuses on visual forces which appeal to the
memories of mourners and visitors. The dynamic shape of walls,
ramps and landscape are used as an expression of life's fugacity.
Enric Miralles was buried in one of the tombs after his death on
July 3rd in 2000.

Finisterre Cemetery
Address
Rúa do Alcalde Fernández
15155 Fisterra
Spain
.
Constructing a cemetery at Cape Finisterre (a rock-bound
peninsula on the west coast of Galicia and deriving its name from
the Latin 'Finisterrae', which literally means 'Land's End'),
demands a site-sensitive approach and careful execution of the
project. César Portela's starting point was the archaic layout of
granite rocks that form the peninsula and the forces of nature
that created this spot: the pulling of the atlantic wind, the light
and the constant surf of the ocean. The result is an arrangement
of buildings alongside a sloping (or rising) existing road that
connects the surrounding hills with the lower beachside. Granite
cubes form a small chapel and burial niches. Their visual
connection to the sea reminds of ancient celtic graves that could
be found nearby in Galicia and even though this consideration in
observance of the modernist shape of boxes is not too obvious, it
leads to a poetic atmosphere that can be perceived especially
during foggy Galician weather.

Pedrafita Tunnels Control Centre
Address
Highway N-VI s/n
27670 Pedrafita do Cebreiro
Spain
.
In-between the highway and the city of Piedrafita, this Centre of
Control was built for the management of 7 road tunnels. On this
site, the architects created a building with a single character,
without interfering with the magic of the landscape. The
proximity to the former sanctuary of Cebreiro, in the centre of
pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, gave the keys to the
design of the project. The nature gave the idea for the forms and
materials. Large stone plates, that local countrymen use to
protect their dead in the cemetery of Cebreiro, are used for the
facade. The 500 kg stones were handled masterfully in the midst
of the cold and isolation of those heights, with a strong and
resounding result. For the first time, the large format of these
jewels of nature, are placed on the façade of a building that is
intended to make visible presence with austerity and dignity, in
the midst of a harsh and inhospitable landscape.

San Michele Cemetery Extension
Address
San Michele
Venice
Italy
.
Venice’s principal cemetery San Michele is located on an island
between Venice and Murano. The design redefines some of it's
original physical qualities. In the 1st phase the current burial
grounds are complemented by the construction of a series of new
courtyards and a chapel. The first courtyard is a prototype and
opened to the public in September 2007. It's called “the
courtyard of the four Evangelists”: basalt-clad walls and
pavements with inlaid text from the four Evangelists’ gospels and
a black exposed concrete colonnade. The second phase is the
construction of a new island, parallel to the existing cemetery
but separated by a canal. It will feature tomb buildings,
conceived as simple sculpted blocks, together with a series of
gardens at water level. Unlike the remainder of San Michele,
which is higher above the water line and surrounded by a wall,
this new island seeks to create a more open, accessible
monument providing a greater sense of place and context within
the lagoon.

What object build as a small bus station? In a corner, between the
kindergarten and the school, bordering a park, and at the end of
the street the cemetery's gate. What building in a white village
that used until a few years ago the beautiful technique of the
vault in their houses? Architecture of a single material taken from
the earth, shaped for it acquires a resistant capacity that is in the
geometry of the form, not in the material, economy. A single
material, a single form that covers everything, roof, interior
space, exterior image, structure. Architecture in which
everything is necessary. Build only with white concrete that rises
to become a sheet, structure whose stability is due to the form,
and which folds on itself to cover the whole programme. (Excerpt
from the memory of the project).

Palace of Concerts and Sports
Address
Rinktines gatve 1
01100 Vilnius
Lithuania
.
The Palace of Concerts and Sports, built in 1971 in the
southernmost part of Zirminai, in the middle of the former
cemetery, is an example of Soviet Constructivism and Brutalist
architecture, remarkable for its vessel-like exterior. The Palace,
once one of the architectural icons of Soviet Vilnius, was, until
the 1990s, a major venue for sporting events, especially local and
international basketball matches, as well as concerts and shows.
Its seating capacity is about 4400. On October 22/23 in 1988, the
building hosted the statutory meeting of the Lithuanian political
organization that led the struggle for Lithuanian independence.
On January 14/15 in 1991, a public funeral for the victims of the
January Events took place at the Palace. Later in the 1990s, the
building was used as a shopping mall where space was leased to
small entrepreneurs for business exhibitions and fairs. The
projects have been stalled due to the inclusion of the Palace into
the 2006 'Registry of Cultura' list.

Willem Marinus Dudok was born in Amsterdam in 1884. After
graduating as an engineer from the Royal Military Academy in
Breda, he was involved in the design and construction of
fortresses and barracks for the Dutch army. In 1913, he started a
career as a civil architect, when he was appointed temporary
director of the Public Works department of the city of Leiden.
While in his early work Dudok's style is closely related to that of
the Amsterdam School, later the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright
becomes more important, resulting in a style that is sometimes
referred to as Cubistic Expressionism. Dudok's work is of some
international influence. He died in Hilversum in 1974 and is
buried at the Noorderbegraafplaats (Northern Cemetary), one of
his own designs.

De Nieuwe Ooster Cemetery and Crematorium is the biggest
cemetery in The Netherlands, in terms of numbers of graves. It
was built in three phases: the first two in 1889 and 1915 by
architect Leonard Springer; the third phase was built in 1928 and
shows some characteristics of Springer's style, but it stands on its
own in terms of design. Landscape architects Karres and Brands
have chosen not to connect the three parts, but make the
contrast more clearly defined. This way, each part of the
cemetery gets an individual identity (text from website

This is considered Carlo Scarpa's most important and complex
work. It has an astonishing detail and is mainly built in concrete,
used in an incredible way. There is an extensive use of water.
The architect said about this project: "I would like to explain the
Tomb Brion. I consider this work, if you permit me, to be rather
good and which will get better over time. I have tried to put
some poetic imagination into it, though not in order to create
poetic architecture but to make a certain kind of architecture
that could emanate a sense of formal poetry. The place for the
dead is a garden. I wanted to show some ways in which you could
approach death in a social and civic way; and further what
meaning there was in death, in the ephemerality of life other
than these shoe-boxes." Scarpa died in 1978, in a construction
site accident. He is buried in this cemetery in a standing position
in a well-hidden spot, within the interstitial space created by the
walls of the old and new cemeteries.

Space for the future, that is what Borren Staalenhoef is really
about. Buildings and urban design plans as spatial frames: walls,
roofs, floors, streets and squares within and around which all
manner of scenarios are possible. Robust but elegant so that they
are durable and will age well. Urban design plans that offer a
counterweight to the standard demolish-and-rebuild urban
renewal operations because they allow and welcome
modifications. Landscape designs that provide guidelines for
introducing order and beauty into daily life. But above all,
buildings that offer a large degree of freedom for living, working
and enjoyment. Because once the building is finished, the master
builders hand control to the users. It is this attitude that ensures
Borren Staalenhoef a bright future (text by Kirsten Hannema).

The winery is half buried in a North slope. The volume appears
like a horizontal line in the landscape confronting the Pyrenees
skyline. The different phases in wine production are developed
on a single level in three boxes: production, cask room and bottle
cemetery and two patios for side activities: reception and cask
fill. The wooden skin, covering the boxes and patios and the
massive presence of water achieve needed environmental
qualities for the process. The main façade is generated by a two
level volume containing administrative and representative uses
all built in concrete.

This project is formalised in a building that, in the manner of a
shell-container, houses the industrial wine-making processes,
establishes a dialogue with its surroundings, projects an unitary
aesthetic image and its interior sums up the values of the
traditional wineries. The interior layout of the building is
organised around three great boxes containing the main
wine-making processes: wine-making room, cask room and bottle
room or cemetery. These boxes are connected with each other by
courtyards and service spaces where side activities take place,
such as cleaning out the casks, bottling and storing the products.
The building appears to be embedded in the land, like a great
earthy container, with a great deal of inertia, responding to the
scale of the landscape and respecting the characteristics of the
location. The building is conceived as a horizontal line arising
from the slope and, having suffered an accident: an emerging,
lightweight volume sculpted by the erosion of the wind

The project was developed in two phases; first we built two

left the space in the middle for the representative volume. After
two years the volume was built giving new meaning to the
assembly. The new volume confronts the naves linearity and
appears sculptural and expressive. We had the chance to design

The funerary complex at Munich-Riem by Andreas Meck and
Stephan Koppel is a distinguished addition to the modern
Northern European tradition of buildings that honour rites of
passage with quiteness and thoughtfulness. The simple, clear
buildings, together with the rough enclosing, form a place of
silence. Three courtyards divide the lot. The buildings are
classified as serious, with oak, steel and stone Corte (concrete
and stone) determining the image. All materials are massive and
left untreated. Under a stone roof, one can find the parlour: a
smooth oak cube.

Gate To The City Of The Dead
Address
Powstanców 48

Situated on the edge of the old cemetery, away from the
entrance, this funeral chapel is reached by the regular pattern of
paths that wind between the graves, in a landscape where higher
patches of ground alternate with flat areas. The difference in
ground heights is elegantly resolved by the creation of a wide,
grassed terrace ending with an embankment wall containing a
long line of funeral urns. The chapel is long and narrow and
slightly arched: a glazed nucleus encapsulated in a subtle
masonry that contains it without completely closing it. The two
parallel lateral walls in reinforced concrete seem only to stand
next to the central block; and on them is impressed an upward
movement - rendered still more sensitive by their curved form
whereby next to the main façade they do not touch the ground.
The slightly convex roof is interrupted on one side to leave a strip
open to the light and to a view of the sky (text from

The renovation of Santuario de Arantzazu aims to recover the
environment around the Basilica of Arantzazu. These intervention
had, on the one hand, the aim of adapting the physical
environment (through an Special Program of Landscape Protection
and an urbanization project of the Basilica’s outer doors that
includes a tourist office and a parking) and, on the other hand,
the renovation of the Old Seminary and ball courts to equip them
as a new meeting place: Gandiaga Topagunea. In addition, a new
place has been built next to the old chapel in order to host a
sculpture donated by Jorge Oteiza. This building is known as
Misterio. The cultural centre “Gandiaga Topagunea” is conceived
as a group of stony blocks that are perforated by large holes, like
an excavated void and horizontal cuts that open the building to
the imposing natural landscape. The cultural centre holds
cultural and exhibition programmes.

Christ the King Cemetery is located on the rolling hills of a
Slavonian valley in the middle of Papuk. The concept of the
cemetery is based on the construction of a continuous wall with a
recognizable structure. It is made of cheap brick which follows
the topography of the terrain in gentle curves, enclosing the
burial field and embracing the mortuary building and burial
service chapel. The theme of overlapping of contextual
materials, brick and wood, is executed consequently in the
interior and exterior with special attention paid to details and
excellence in the execution.

This chapel is made out of concrete, in the form of an Egyptian
sarcophagus. The material was used for its simplicity, suitable for
the chapel's function. Stepping into the building, this acts as a
medium between the interior and exterior. There are three main
symbolic elements: the door with its abstract pattern which
symbolizes the unknown of the afterlife; when the door opens it
creates a cross with the back hole and lastly, a hole in the ceiling
where light enters from the back of the building, casting
shadows. You enter the chapel in the dark, but you are guided

The Sancho el Sabio Foundation, dating from 1964, is the main
documentation and investigation centre of Basque culture and
history. The proposal involves the recovery of a former cemetery
and based on that, the development of the remaining building.
Because the programme involves important storage spaces, it was
decided that all of the storage areas and adjoining work areas
would be on basement level and the former cemetery would hold
a lobby, meeting rooms, administration, and circulation. The
main idea is to preserve the old building in a glass structure that
would also provide natural light to the basement level. To
achieve this, a perimetrical ring around the cemetery is emptied
and the glass façade of the new building is built up from this
fissure. The basement is developed as an external ring around the
cemetery and in it are located different storage and work rooms.
The proposal realizes the coexistence of the two buildings.

Aldo Rossi's 'City for the Dead' in Modena, Italy, stands as a
largely unfinished project in which Rossi explores the thematic
elements put forth in his book 'Architecture of the City', primarily
the forms of memory and meaning. The project was originally
won as a competition in collaboration with Gianni Braghieri in

roughly fifty percent completion. The site was originally to
contain the ossuary cube and a series of rib-like buildings, which

Cemetery Extension
Address
Schulstrasse 2
6972 Fussach
Austria
.
There is a general expectation that cemeteries should be
dignified places, and this project is no exception. Built adjacent
to the original cemetery, this extension at first appears
defensive, with its thick, high walls. However these are softened
by curves which beg to be followed as they lead you into the
sanctuary. Once inside, rather than being grim and forbidding,
the interior is actually rather friendly and comforting. A place
that invites reflection and contemplation; that asks you to linger
rather than hurry away. The walls are lined with niches, and the
adjacent space is protected by an oversailing roof. Gravel is used
to cover the floor, with concrete and corten steel features
denoting changes in level and marking out rectangular areas of
box hedging. Cemeteries aren't places that one would normally
visit, yet alone go out of your way for, but you should make an
exception for this one.

This design is the first tangible development in the
much-discussed restructuring of the area. Within a sensitive
cultural and historic context, the architects have created a solid
design that naturally manifests itself as the central focus for the
area. The building includes a primary school, school care, day

plot, located on the outskirts of the Roman Catholic Cemetery,
made for a complex urban integration that has resulted in a
bright and open building.

Cemetery Extension & Funery
Chapel
Address
Kirchstrasse 14
6832 Batschuns
Austria
.
This project is an extension to the original village church,
designed by Clemens Holzmeister in 1922. The chapel is almost a
cubic volume. It comprises of four walls, with one low-level
window and a timber door. The walls are made of rammed clay,
constructed around a reinforced concrete armature. To minimise
the effects of rain erosion, they are oversized and protected by a
steel parapet. The soil, without any additives, was laid in
shuttering in 12cm thick layers before being compacted. The low
boundary walls of the cemetery extension were constructed in
the same fashion. The roof is formed from timber with ply
sheeting, topped with a waterproof membrane and incorporates a
full-width roof light at the north end. The floor is also formed
from clay, given a polished wax finish after being tamped and
dried. It should be noted that this form of construction is quite
expensive, and to help keep the costs down, much of the work
was executed by volunteers from the local community.

Cemetery Extension & Funeral
Chapel
Address
Walgaustrasse 1
6833 Weiler
Austria

This small project was won in competition in 1994. The concept
is simple: A single space for remembrance, reflection and bidding
farewell - a glass cube wrapped in timber slats. The west facing
main doors incorporate a steel crucifix that splits as the doors
slide apart to allow entry. There is also a small pass door in the
right hand leaf. Forming a focus in front of the eastern wall is
another large cross, shrouded behind a veil of translucent white
fabric that descends to the floor from a roof light. The ceiling is
finished in timber and the roof is supported by four steel angle
columns located at each corner. As part of the same commission,
the architects were also responsible for the remodelling of the
western end of the churchyard.

Signal Box Auf dem Wolf
Address
Walkeweg 51
4053 Basel
Switzerland
.
An impressive monolith made out of concrete and wrapped in 20
cm wide strips of copper, this building includes six floors of
workspaces where railway switches are controlled electronically.
By wrapping copper strips all around the building, a kind of a
Faraday cage that protects the electronic equipment has been
created. This sculpture-like tower stands right next to Herzog &
de Meuron's train depot and improves the urban quality of this
previously nondescript industrial area. Seen from the southwest,
it provides an unexpected counterpoint to memorial stones of
the nearby 19th c. cemetery Wolfgottesacker.

Bondi to Bronte Coast Walk
Extension
Address
Calga Reserve & Waverley Cemetery
2024 Sydney
Australia
.
The Bondi to Bronte Coast Walk Extension involved constructing
an elevated boardwalk, which resolves complex geotechnical,
structural and heritage conditions. The design of the cliff top
walk is generated with an underlying emphasis on sensitivity of
place. Located in east Sydney, it is one of the most visited walks
in Australia. Its panoramic views attract over 700 000 visitors
annually.
This 515m long walkway is in equal parts a ribbon of
movement though the sublime cliff top landscape, and a place to
stop and embrace the heightened experience of this unique
landscape asset at the edge of Australia. This project
successfully balanced the conservation of this iconic heritage with
the growing demands for open space recreation, landscape
experience and social sustainability.

A simple building connected to the cemetery wall offers different
entrances to the graveyard. From the outside only one level is
perceptible - the lower level, including the crypt, is organised
around an inner patio. The exterior walls are built of in-situ cast
