Welcome everyone to the final edition of the newsletter for term 3. This has been a long and difficult term with many, many families affected by colds and influenza. I know that all members of our school community are looking forward to the September holidays. 2016 School Captains I am very pleased to announce, after a long and challenging selection process, that our 2016 school captains are Jashneel Datt and Dannielle Prowse. Nic Dunlop, Madi Jones and Renee Williams are our new vice-captains. No, that is not a mistake. The selection panel simply could not separate the girl vice-captains so two were selected. This is a first for our school. I am very much looking forward to working with our new captains in 2016. Congratulations to all students who were involved in the selection process! Relay for Life Once again, students, staff and supporters from our school put in an astonishing effort at the Relay for Life even which was held last weekend. This show of support is wonderful to see and of course a major fundraising contribution for the Cancer Council. Many staff were involved in many different ways but it would be remiss of me to mention the efforts of Mrs Cheryle Williams who worked tirelessly to coordinate our efforts. Thank you Cheryle! Your ongoing contribution to our school is much appreciated. Year 11 Subject Selection Evening and SETP Interviews It was great to see so many parents and students at this event conducted a few weeks ago. It is crucial that year 10 students make wise and informed decisions about the subjects and learning pathways they will select in 2016. This evening gave students a huge amount of information to draw on when making those decisions. Thank you to all members of staff who worked to arrange information sessions for the students and parents. Formal SETP (Senior Education and Training Plans) interviews to choose subjects and map out two year learning pathways are occurring at the moment. QCS Test I would like to congratulate all year 12s on the dedication and commitment shown at the recent Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test. This extremely difficult and challenging two day test is an extremely important part of the assessment picture for year 12s and I thank them for their efforts. Well done! Until next edition… Thank you to all students, staff, parents and carers for your efforts, after an extremely productive term. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment at the school office after the holidays if I can be of assistance with any matter. Our current President will not be returning in 2016 therefore, we will be seeking someone to fill that role. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to contact the school for further information or come along to a P&C meeting. Our new socks with the DSHS logo look great and anklets have now arrived. The socks are available at the uniform outlet We are eagerly awaiting the new seating for the Great Hall which should hopefully arrive during term 4. Congratulations and best of luck to the 13 debutantes and their partners being presented at the DSHS Deb Ball on Friday night. The next general meeting is Tuesday 6th October at 5:30pm in the Library. All welcome. Year 11 UQ PE Trip Monday the 24th of August 15 year 11 PE students and a sleepy teacher set off at 5:30am to the University of Queensland in Brisbane. They participated in numerous exercise physiology workshops and got a great taste of university life. Firstly a VO2 max test was carried out; with Jessi achieving high results proving she is as fit as a top rugby league player. Shyann and Brianna then did a 10 second cycle test again achieving very good results. Chris and Billy volunteered to do the 30 second “vomit” cycle test where they achieved fantastic results and while they were close to being sick, they handled it like champions! Wyatt then held men’s elite marathon pace of 20km/h for a few seconds… great effort!! Lunch in the food court (3 x the size of the food court at Dalby Shopping World) was a highlight of the day. The food court alone convinced numerous students that UQ was the uni to attend. After lunch the pink sock crew Jay, Wyatt, Chris, Billy joined Brianna in some speed reaction runs. These tests displayed sprinting prowess, decision making skills and quick reaction time. The final workshop carried out was a strength workshop where Jay tried to prove his quadriceps and hamstring strength. Disappointingly, the machine was not working but Jay’s effort was unquestionable. Great day had by all! Tutoring in the Support Space Year 7 Update The end of Term Three is upon us – where has the year gone? Students are well on their way to having their first year of high school done and dusted. I would like the take the opportunity to congratulate the students for their effort and behaviour this term. I am sure they will all agree with me when I say that it has been a busy term indeed. As we look towards the holidays, I would like to remind you all of some events that are coming up in Term 4 for the students. Year 7 Camp: Invoices and information letters for camp were sent home to the parents/care givers of students who returned EOI slips earlier this month. If you received this information and your student is still interested in attending camp, payments need to be finalised in order to secure their spot on camp. The deadline for the payment of deposits has now passed for students who returned EOIs. This means that information letters will be distributed to remaining students this week. In order for camp to proceed, all payments must be finalised by the 9th of October. Places on camp are limited and the only way to secure your student’s participation is to have all monies paid by this date. Camp is taking place from Wednesday 21 October – Friday 23 October (Week3, Term 4). Normal classes will be operating for all students who do not attend camp. Please call or email if you have any concerns or queries about camp. Assessment: It is important that students make every effort to complete all assessment before holidays commence. Unless an exemption for a task has been given, it is the school’s expectation that students will attempt all assessment items. If you have queries or concerns about your child’s assessment, please contact the relevant teacher or Head of Department. If you are unsure of who to speak to, the administration staff or I can assist with this. I would also like to remind parents and caregivers that a copy of this semester’s assessment calendar can be found on the school’s website. This is a great way of keeping up-to-date with what work your child should be doing and when they need to have it completed by. Having these conversations with your child regularly throughout the school semester can ease a lot of stress when it comes to busy times such as Weeks 5, 8 and 9 (traditionally times when students have a lot of assessment due). End of Year Rewards Day: Details have been finalised regarding the End of Year Rewards Day for students. Students who have consistently demonstrated positive behaviour choices since week 5 of this term will be invited to attend the day. This year, the students spend their day locally at the Bunya Campus and will be involved in a range of different activities. Invitations for this day will be distributed shortly to students. As always, please feel free to email or call should you have any concerns or queries. Sarah Hemmings Year 7 Coordinator shemm1@eq.edu.au Tutoring is on every morning in the Support Space from 8 am until 9 am. Bring your homework, revision sheets, assignments or just yourself! The sale or distribution of such recording is strictly prohibited under federal copyright law. Year 12 News FROM THE FORMAL COMMITTEE: The formal committee is searching for any photos students have from school activities in 2015. Please send these to myself or Scott Burt (aspan14@eq.edu.au or sburt69@eq.edu.au) and we will have them on display at the formal. On Tuesday last week, students were handed out Formal Notes that they need to fill in. These forms are to let the school know their formal partners (if not a school student will need Principal’s permission) and the family members they will invite to attend the preformal drinks and nibbles before the beginning of the formal. These need to be returned to Mrs Maunder by 18th September. Also a reminder, students must not book appointments before MIDDAY on formal day (Thursday 19th November). Students will not be released from school before MIDDAY on this day. FROM THE VALEDICTORY COMMITTEE: All graduating year 12s will be able to purchase a gift which they will receive after the valedictory ceremony on their last day of school. This gift will be a photo frame with a picture of the cohort and a plaque saying ‘Dalby State High School- Seniors 2015’. This gift is optional and will need to be purchased by the students through the school office. They will cost $20 and money needs to be returned to the office by Wednesday 21st October. Forms were handed out several weeks ago. If students need this form they must come see Miss Spanner ASAP. Some students also need to bring in baby photos and they need to fill in the form that indicates what they are doing next year and who they would like to thank. It is important that all students get these done ASAP (preferably before the end of the term) because there isn’t much time left after the September holidays and time is flying by so quickly. QCS and EXAMS: Congratulations to all students who have managed to survive the most difficult time of their schooling career- END OF TERM 3. This time was probably the busiest they have ever encountered and they handled it with style! Annika Werny deserves public congratulations for winning the Showman’s Champion and Combined Champion at State Championships with her horse Conac (see photo). Annika is a very talented horse-rider and should be very proud of her results. Good luck at Nationals over the September holidays Annika! If there are other students who are excelling in their chosen field (sporting, academic or cultural) please let me know via email so I can publically acknowledge their efforts. When I return from the holidays students can either call me Miss Spanner or Mrs Edwards! I hope that all students have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday (get into your wider reading to make your life easier in term 4 students!) Miss Spanner Year 12 Coordinator. Vicki Wilson Netball Challenge Year 8 Update Another term done and dusted – and what a busy and productive term it has been! Apart from all the wonderful work being done in classrooms, as a cohort we have been involved in our first Awards Ceremony, sport, helping out those less fortunate than ourselves by donating to charity, dancing the night away at the social, choosing our electives for Yr 9 and most recently, being part of Relay for Life. On that, special congratulations must go to the Golden Girls Relay for Life team on their incredible fundraising effort – with $3860 banked already, they have taken out the Inaugural Relay for Life Highest Junior Fundraisers trophy and they aren’t finished yet – they plan on hitting the $4000 mark by the end of this week! Well done, ladies. As I have said time and again, I am extremely proud of my 8s and the amazing way that they involve themselves in Dalby SHS life. They have earned a break so I hope they all get to rest and relax over the holidays so they can come back, rearing to go for our final term as Yr 8s, which will culminate with our Positive Behaviour Reward Trip to Wet ‘n’ Wild in the last week of the school year. If your child was invited to be part of this, it means that their attendance is at or above 90% and that they have not been off Green Level for their behaviour this term. They should have brought home an invite to this that needs to be returned to me at school ASAP. As always, if you or your child have any questions or queries about what is going on at school, please don’t hesitate to contact me at school on 46 690 900. Karen Marini Year 8 Coordinator After eight games of netball, taking on teams from St George, Toowoomba, Millmerran, Stanthorpe, Highfields and Roma, it came down to an exciting class of Dalby vs Dalby at the Junior Vicki Wilson Netball Challenge in Toowoomba last Sunday. Dalby State High School and Our Lady of the Southern Cross College teams (featuring players from grade 7-10) battled it out on the courts for five rounds with both teams getting through to the play-offs and on to separate Division 2 Semi-final berths. Unfortunately both Dalby teams lost their respective semi-finals resulting in Dalby High and OLSSC having to play each other for third and fourth position. OLSSC won the game finishing an impressive third overall in Division 2. Perhaps the most rewarding part of the day was watching the beautiful sportsmanship and comradery in the two Dalby teams – a true credit to our town and to the sport. Big thanks to parents (especially Dads who gave up their Fathers Day!) and coaches for supporting the teams all day. Sports News Sports Awards Dinner: The annual Sports Awards Dinner will be held on Tuesday 27th October at the Dalby Leagues Club. On 26th August, Dalby SHS ‘Aeschylus’ students travelled to Brisbane for their annual cultural experience. The trip aims to immerse students in live theatre and broaden their acting skills through a professional acting workshop. An early start of 6am set the students up for a 10:00am performance of Dracula at Southbank’s QPAC. Above: John Flegler competes in Shot Put at the AWD Sports Day recently The students found the performance to be engaging as it was performed by well-trained actors from the well-known theatre company Shake & Stir. The students left the auditorium feeling frightened, yet fulfilled by the gothic theatre style of performance they had experienced. There were no questions left unanswered as the Dalby State High School students asked intelligent questions at the 10 minute Q&A after the production. Upon leaving the Cremorne Theatre, students were given an hour of individual culinary experience exploration time. In this time, they enjoyed Boost, Max Brenner, Guzman and Gomez, Nitrogenie and Italian delights that made their taste buds tingle. The students then boarded the bus to Fortitude Valley and took part in an Acting workshop run by Backbone Youth Theatre's veteran actor Chris Beckey. The workshop taught students about abstract thinking and turning emotions into actions. After a long, exhausting and educational day they safely travelled home, arriving at the school bus interchange at 8pm. by Jeanette Genis Senior Music Class 2015 “Your Signature Tune” Final Public Performance Featuring performances by Chelsea Atkin, Norton Barbarich, Lachlan Berlin, Shana Caldwell, Marni Ebbage, Sherene Graham, Brandy Hirovanaa, Tayla Hosking, Jamie-lee Johnston, Dylan Lockhart, Mikayla Palmer, Clara Rudd, Amber Smith, Jared Trickett, Laura Anderson, Megan Burnett, Georgia Saxelby, Flora Scarffe Please come and support us!
