This year, the Awards Event will be held on Saturday, September 19. This is an annual event in which we recognize the hard work students have put in throughout the year and encourage them to perform at even higher standards. More information to come. Kumon Publications Please be advised that the centre will no longer hand out Kumon sponsored publications to students. This is due to the debris routinely left by students around the centre premises. An email will be sent out to parents to advise them when the publications are ready for pick up. Parents may obtain their copies either by picking them up in person from the front desk, or by sending a note with your child requesting that the publications be sent home with them. Please do not request for a copy via email. Closed LevelUP Facebook Visit us at www.facebook.com/kumon for the latest tips and sweepstakes. Our centre is once again taking part in the exciting LevelUP initiative! Every student who passes one or more Achievement Test between June 1 and September 30 will be entered into a draw. One winner will be chosen from Calgary to win an iPad mini, and three winners from each centre will receive a $10 Indigo Gift Card! This is an exciting opportunity to reward students for their achievements in the Kumon program. You can help your child(ren) progress through the levels smoother and faster by simply: • • • • making sure their homework is completed every day ensuring they attend classes regularly communicating any concerns or observations about their progress to us encouraging your children with positive and constructive feedback! Feature Student Our feature student for June/July is Karen Johnny! Karen was chosen for the consistent commitment and hard work she has shown throughout her time as a student at Kumon. Karen began the Kumon Math Program as a 7-years old, Grade 2 student in Level 2A. She was inspired to join Kumon because of her siblings who were already enrolled and excelling in Kumon. Due to her unfailing dedication and despite being involved in other time-consuming activities such as piano and swimming, she has successfully reached advanced honour roll status and is now a Grade 5 student completing level G worksheets. Congratulations Karen! Karen has faced some difficulties along the way. Her greatest challenge in Kumon has been to strive to understand a new concept on her own. She has overcome this difficulty by focusing on the question and asking for help if necessary. She always makes sure to fully understand the question before moving forward, so that she will have no trouble the next time she has to apply the concept. Through the application of this methodology, Karen has developed the highly valuable skill of learning from her mistakes instead of letting them dishearten her. Indeed, her advice to other students is to “work hard and never give up.” Karen’s favorite parts about Kumon are the instructor, the assistants, and the summer events. Her goal with Kumon is to complete the Math Program and go on to become a Kumon instructor. Her long-term career goal is to become a doctor. Karen would like to thank Ms. Reda and all the Kumon assistants for helping her succeed in the program. Karen’s parents say that “Kumon has helped Karen to excel in mathematics at school.” Congratulations to the following students who have made it on the honour roll for the first time! Check it out: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/jason-au/kids-summer-motivation_b_7268610.html What is the proper approach to studying Kumon? Here are a few things that we encourage students to do at the centre that you can provide support for at home. Study with concentration We aim to ensure students form the habit of concentrating on their worksheets right from enrollment. There are a few indicators that children are fully focused while studying: their eyes stay on their worksheets and their pencil continuously writes answers quickly. Read the information in the worksheets carefully before writing answers Students should read the instructions, examples, and passages on their worksheets before they start to write their answers. Although speed is important in Kumon, taking the proper study approach is just as important. If students are not in the habit of reading the instructions or examples and are in the habit of going directly to the exercise and writing answers, they may answer correctly while the work is easy; however, this poor study habit can cause students to making mistakes when the material gets harder. It’s important to establish the right approach to studying from the beginning, because habits can be hard to change later. Write neatly and carefully Students should pay attention to the guides and write their answers within the space provided on the worksheets. Examples of guides include size of text on the worksheets, size of the boxes for writing letters and numbers, and the size of the line for the answer. Writing neatly and carefully helps to reduce the number of mistakes and leads to more effective learning. Erase only what is necessary when making corrections When students are changing their answer, first they should decide what the right answer is and then only erase the incorrect portion of their answer. This is the most efficient way to study and students can fix their worksheets more rapidly. Students who are in the habit of erasing everything and then answer the question again sometimes mistakenly write the same wrong answer. By deciding what the right answer is first, and only erasing the wrong part, students will be prepared when they reach the higher levels. - Courtesy of Kumon’s Branding Department Bring your children to a participating Chapters or Indigo location for Special Sunday Story Time presented by Kumon Save the Dates! The number of worksheets for homework can be adjusted to accommodate the busiest schedule. Please review your vacation schedule and advise in advance as to whether there are changes to your child’s summer study. A gentle reminder that a minimum of thirty (30) days written notice is required from parents who wish take summer breaks. Have a great summer and don’t forget the sunscreen! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summer 2015 Vacation Schedule My child(ren) ______________________will be absent from ______ / ______ (MM/DD) to ______ / ______ (MM/DD).
