Wel l and Publi c L ibr ar y BOARDWALK BANTER VOLUME 11, ISSUE 3 May/June 2015 www.welland.library.on.ca t. 905-734-6210 Teen YOUTUBE Book Review GET VOLUNTEER HOURS BY READING AND THEN SUBMITTING A VIDEO REVIEW! Calling teens who love to read! We need teens from Welland to help us out! All you have to do is read a prelease of a young adult novel, write a book review and then shoot a two- minute video reviewing your book. We’ll post the video to our YouTube channel and give you ten hours of community service! Visit the library, give us a call at 905-734-6210 ext. 2508, or go to www.welland.library.on.ca for more information. FEATURED DATABASE: Freegal Music Freegal is a free music service from the Welland Public Library. All you need is your library card number, PIN and an Internet connection. You can find the link to Freegal right on our website’s homepage. Freegal offers access to about eight million songs, including Sony Music’s legendary artists as well as current hits. There is no software to download and there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. You can download five songs per week. There are also approximately 15,000 music videos available (although a video counts as two songs towards your weekly limit of five). Once you download a song or video, it is yours to keep. Coming in May: BORROW A LAPTOP COMPUTER! Beginning in May, laptop computers will be available for a free 2-hour loan within the Main Library. If you are 18 years or older, have a WPL card in good standing and current photo identification, come and check out one of our laptops. Then find a comfortable chair and use our free wireless connection. Details will be available from Library staff. To highlight Freegal as our current featured eResource, we are introducing Freegal Fridays in May and June! For these two months, a different Welland Public Library staff person will pick a song from Freegal each week and the library will announce the song every Friday. What songs do the friendly faces of the Welland Public Library like to listen to? Tune in to find out! If you need help getting started with Freegal, you can ask for assistance at our information desk, or schedule a Tech Time appointment. $$$ LOVE YOUR LIBRARY and WIN! What do you love about your library? How can you thank your library for their programs and services? Until June 12, you can enter the Love Your Library contest hosted by SirsiDynix. Submit a letter or video sharing how your library has made a difference in your life and be entered to win a $100 Visa gift card and up to $2,000 for your favorite library! For contest details and to enter, visit http://librarylove.sirsidynix.com THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED May 18, Victoria Day & June 19, Staff PD Day VOLUME 11, ISSUE 3 Page 2 FREEGAL…SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE? by Rae-Lynne Aramburo, Electronic Services Librarian I decided to put this music collection to the test, so I asked five people in my life, with different ages and musical tastes to choose three songs they would like to have in their own collections. The choices could be from any genre and any era. The songs could be old favourites that they already own, or songs that they want to get. Then I checked Freegal to see if it held these songs, and if not, I checked for another song by the same artist. See the results below. The success rate for this list of song requests gets a passing grade, with 67% of the songs found. (Phewf! I really didn’t know how the results would be when I started out on this exercise.) My search did not cover all genres (where are all of the Rockers in my life?), so I invite you to take a look at Freegal yourselves and try looking for your own favourites. Before you login, however, I have a couple of tips: 1) Beware of the cover tunes. It is not uncommon to find a song that matches the title of the song you are interested in, but is actually recorded by a different artist, such as a tribute band or a karaoke cover. Fortunately, Freegal allows Person Song Title My Neighbour 1. Sugar (15 year old high 2. Earned it school student, female) 3. Take me to church you to listen to a clip from the song before you commit to downloading it, so you can make sure it is the right song. 2) Searching in Freegal can sometimes take patience. When you type keywords in the search box, Freegal will look for words that match your search terms in its database and give you results listed into categories like albums, artists, songs, etc. Even if the song you are looking for is not there, you will likely get some results. For example, when looking for The Twelfth of Never by Nina Simone, I looked through the albums and songs of Nina Simone, and then through the songs called The Twelfth of Never (many artists have recorded this song) before I determined that the song sung by that particular artist was not available in Freegal. If you know both the artist and the song title, I would recommend entering keywords for both in the search box and select “Search All.” (e.g., Foo Fighters Best of You). Then scroll down to the songs results at the bottom of the page, and hopefully your song will be at the top of the list. Happy hunting! Artist In Freegal Other songs by this artist?
