RAINWEAR DEFINITIONS ABRASION RESISTANCE – The ability of a fabric to withstand loss of appearance, utility, pile or surface through the destructive action of rubbing. SEAM SEALING – A process in which the stitch line of a garment is made leak proof by the application of seam tape or heat sealing. BACKING – An extra wrap or filling, or both, woven into or knitted on the back of a fabric to give it support or additional weight. Polyester is the most common. STITCHED AND TAPED SEAMS – The seams are stitched and then a waterproof tape is heat sealed over the stitching. This makes the seams waterproof. COATING – A finishing process in which some substance, eg., poly vinyl chloride (pvc), neoprene, or polyurethane covers the fabric on one or both sides. STORM FLY FRONT – A panel built into the front of the jacket that blocks the water from blowing through the front closure. DENIER – The weight measurement of the synthetic filament yarns and fibers. The low numbers represent the finer yarns and the higher numbers represent the heavier yarns.
