Rhododendron 'Anna Rose Whitney'
Rhododendron 'Charles Loomis'
(R. griersonianum X 'Countess of Derby'). Van Veen.
NEW! Huge 4" flowers in a spectacular bright rosepink can't be ignored. Quickly forms a tall plant with
8"fern-green leaves, just right for the back of the
border. Well known as a superior grower in hot
southern summers. Note the hardiness rating and
site it in a place that is shaded and protected from
drying winter winds. Zones 6-9. H: 4-5 ft · W: 3-4 ft
('English Roseum' X hyperythrum).The species R.
hyperythrum shows great heat tolerance. Our plant
of the hybrid 'Charles Loomis' endures our hot
summers and never shows any ill effects. Buds
heavily, with rounded trusses emerging first as
blush pink quickly turning white, much like a yak
hybrid. The narrow and glossy recurved leaves are
retained for 3-4 years. Zones 5-8. H: 3-4 ft · W:

Rhododendron 'Consolini's
Windmill'
Hachmann. Rosy-red flowers with darker edges
holds their color well and are displayed beautifully on
a low-growing mound with recurved dark green
leaves. Buds young and is perhaps the best overall
grower of the Hachmann introductions. Named in
honor of Herr Hachmann's home town in Germany.
Looks great even when not in bloom! Zones 5-7. H:

(unknown Dexter parents). Consolini. A sensation
in bloom, we finally have enough of this beauty to
feature on this year's cover! The picotee-type flower
is red edged with white on a fast growing plant with
good habit and shiny foliage. Best in dappled
shade. Tony Consolini was Charles Dexter's
gardener for many years and a noted hybridizer in
his own right. Zones 5-7. H: 4-5 ft · W: 4-5 ft

Rhododendron 'Betty Hume'
Rhododendron 'Cynosure'
(fortunei x unknown). Dexter/Baldsiefen hybrid. A
mid-May bloomer that will not be easily upstaged.
Ruffled and fragrant, multi-colored pink 4" flowers
have heavy substance. The upright trusses are
displayed on a medium growing sun-tolerant plant
with the characteristic large matte-green fortuneitype leaves. A "top-of-the-line" Dexter. Zones 5-7. H:
3-4 ft · W: 3-4 ft
('Essex Scarlet' x fortunei). Shapiro. The Shapiros
considered this their best plant and many agree. A
medium-sized plant, wider than tall that buds up
heavily even in full shade, but also does well in sun.
The full pink trusses in late May have a distinctive
rust-colored flare in the throat of each flower. The
meaning of "cynosure"? Look it up. Zones 5-8. H:

'Calsap' combines the hardiness of 'Catalgla' with
'Sappho' to produce a super hardy, upright grower.
White flowers with a bold purple flare on the upper
lobe in a formal truss. Sets a prodigious amount of
seed and should be dead-headed after flowering to
maintain vigor. Zones 4-7. H: 6-7 ft · W: 5-6 ft

Rhododendron 'Caroline'
Rhododendron 'Dexter's Honeydew'
(fortunei ssp. decorum hybrid). Gable. Named for
one of Gable's daughters, the loose trusses of large
flowers are light orchid pink and moderately fragrant
with narrow light green leaves. A large growing plant
and one of the best performers for the East Coast.
Popular for hybridizing, as recent research has
shown it to be resistant to fungal root diseases.
Zones 5-7. H: 5-6 ft · W: 5-6 ft
(unknown). Dexter. Few rhododendrons can rival
'Dexter's Honeydew' for fragrance, filling the air
when in full bloom. The medium-sized plant forms a
mound wider than high with a tendency to sprawl,
but pinching when young will help shape it. Large
4", flat-faced flowers are soft pink and white, set off
by large olive-green leaves. Choice! Zones 6-7. H:

Humorously described as a cross between a Great

addition to our "kennel" of offerings. Deep pink buds
open to large light pink flowers turning pure white
with a contrasting red spot deep in the throat. Mattefinished leaves are thick and leathery with a thin
layer of indumentum. Zones 5-7. H: 4-5 ft · W: 5-6 ft

Carrying on Hank’s Legacy:
The Future of Rhododendrons at RareFind
Hank Schannen, the founder of RareFind Nursery was
a man with a mission: to find and propagate rhododendrons that would thrive in the often challenging climate of
the continental US. His collection includes many different
kinds of rhododendrons, giving us a unique opportunity
to assess garden performance as well as beauty.
There are many excellent varieties available but there is
room for improvement on many fronts. Colors such as
deep yellows, oranges and reds are needed, desired and
possible. Disease-resistant and heat-tolerant plants with
more diverse colors are in the pipeline. Beautiful and distinctive foliage—whether variegated, extra large or small,
rounded, very narrow and even purple leaves—can add
exciting texture and color to the garden all year.
Longtime RareFind employee Ron Rabideau has been
hybridizing rhododendrons for nearly 30 years, with ‘Absolute Citron’ his best known introduction so far. It’s been
said that perhaps only one out of 10,000 new seedlings is
worthy of introducing, making this venture a labor of love.
We’ve been evaluating many new varieties from Ron and
other breeders and have identified some as exceptional.
These are being propagated for us in quantity and we will
be offering them in the next few years. Stay tuned!

“Every time I go out to water my gardens and check
up on my new plants, I think about you guys. My
typical experiences have me leery of purchasing
plants by mail order, but I had to have Fothergilla
x intermedia ‘Red Licorice’ and RareFind Nursery
was the only place I could find it. The plants were
promptly shipped and arrived in my Central Illinois
location in very good condition. They were packed
well, were of good size and excellent quality. You
could just tell by the healthy look of the foliage and
the root mass that care had been taken to insure
the best possible plant quality. They transplanted
easily and are thriving. Thanks for a wonderful experience and for top notch plants.”

Lewis, Colts Neck NJ, USA. This clone was a
selection made by Dave Lewis and grown in his

Not for the timid colorist! Spectacular vivid orange to

name of flame azalea. Many forms have orangy
blotches and pink overtones. Grows tall (up to 12')
and non-stoloniferous. Our plants are grown from

If you love the clove scent of R.prinophyllum but your
summers are too hot, try this robust yet still very cold

fragrant and grows in full sun to shade. Genetic
testing has shown this NOT to be a tetraploid as had
been suspected. Zones 4-7. H: 5-6 ft · W: 4-5 ft
This distinctive form of the widespread R.viscosum

Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook,
To please the desert and the sluggish brook.
The purple petals fallen in the pool
Made the black water with their beauty gay;
Here might the red-bird come his plumes to cool,
And court the flower that cheapens his array.
Rhodora! if the sages ask thee why
This charm is wasted on the earth and sky,
Tell them, dear, that, if eyes were made for seeing,
Then beauty is its own excuse for Being;
Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose!
I never thought to ask; I never knew;
But in my simple ignorance suppose
The self-same power that brought me there, brought you.
