Fair opens three-day run on Thursday, Aug. 21
By JERRY PITTMAN
Editor
The 2014 Grady County Free Fair
opens a three-day run Thursday, Aug.
21 at the Grady County Fairgrounds in
Chickasha.
This year’s Fair honorees – Mary Spurlin
and Bobby Foster -- will be recognized
during an opening night ceremony and
ribbon cutting at 7 p.m. The 2014 Fair
Princess selected earlier in the week will
be introduced that night as well, followed by the popular cake auction.
The 99th annual Free Fair continues
through Saturday, Aug. 23. Returning
this year will be nightly entertainment
featuring a number of local musical
groups each evening.
“We elected not to have entertainment for a few years due to all the
construction,” said Peggy McMahan, fair
grounds director. “We are excited that
about 90 percent of these acts are local.
It’s good we have that much talent here
in the county.”
Entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. on
Thursday and Friday evenings under a
“Big Top” tent. The first act will take the
stage at 5 p.m. on Saturday with the final performance each night beginning
at 8:15 p.m.
Fairgoers can enjoy the carnival midway each evening as well as participate
in numerous other activities including
the cake show, the Farm Hand Olympics, kids pedal tractor pull, home
gardening and agronomy contests and
a kids casting contest.
Carnival hours are Thursday 6 p.m. to 10
p.m. and Friday 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., both
of which are Wristband Nights when
you can ride unlimited rides all evening
for one price. You must be 36 inches tall
to purchase a wristband. The midway
opens Saturday from noon until close.
The carnival this year will be set up
on the grassy area to the west side of
Building One.
“Locating the carnival on the west side
will give them more space,” McMahan
said. “Vendor parking will be on the
north side of the building and free public parking is to the east. The courtyard
will be used for the entertainment tent,
vendors, playground equipment and
storm shelters displays”
McMahan has booked a variety of
vendors and organizational booths to
fill both sides of Building One and the
indoor arena building. Ribbon winning crafts, arts and 4-H projects also
will be on display. Exhibit buildings
are open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday
and Friday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on
Saturday.
The arena will have a variety of animals on display including cattle, swine,
sheep, poultry, goats and rabbits.
OHCE cooks once again will be serving up some delicious home cooking
for lunch and dinner in the community
building. Lunch will be served from
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and will cost $7 for
adults and $5.50 for children under 12.
Dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to
7 p.m. and will cost $9 for adults and
$6.50 for children.
